The façade is fading, questions are growing, and time is running out.
Brynn wanted to find answers about her world's carefree existence and her own insatiable curiosity, and upon learning the truth about her planet Halcyon, Brynn's task became simple: stop what she knew was coming. Behind the veneer of simplicity, though, nothing but complexity awaited. How could three people who were just learning to throw off the shackles of their unconscious limitations challenge an entire social order? More importantly, how could they survive the wrath of the deadly Angels who invaded Brynn's dreams and loomed over her every waking moment?
An unexpected alliance with a small group of rebels from a place Brynn had never heard of only days before offered some hope—technology she hadn't known existed, a hard-working person’s ability to endure, and a recklessness fueled by an icy determination she didn't fully understand. But secrets lurked among them too, and when a betrayal from someone close to Brynn puts everyone in danger, bonds are shaken and lines are drawn.
In the battle against the Angels, the only victory is survival.

The cliffhanger at the end of Sugar Coated was rather major and it had me dying to read the next installment in the series. Sadly, my schedule is packed, so it took me more time than I would have liked to read Rose Tinted. But I did! Eventually. And that feeling of angst I had at the end of Sugar Coated? It perpetuated itself.
You will not believe the revelations of Rose Tinted! You won't. I kept saying "no" over and over when reading. And this is not a testament to Ms. Camp's capabilities as a writer. I was just sooo shocked with where she took the plot! Well, not the plot per se. You see Brynn is still on her quest to discover the truth behind their world and is trying to stop Eris. Everything in Rose Tinted leads up to the climax of the Trilogy. The people they meet, the alliances they make, the things they find out... I believe it all to be very well thought through and I am sure we will see that once we get to read book three.
What I was shocked about was Jonah. My poor poor baby, Jonah!
You see, not only does Brynn start to think more and more about where she stands when it comes to the two guys with her inclination being towards the wrong team, but her interactions with Jonah throughout this book even though deeper are less and less. I could feel her being pulled towards Ty who becomes more open and accommodating and who doesn't question her judgement, her plans and her conspiracy theories as much anymore. He's turned quiet into a believer. And it pissed me off.
I'm sorry. I can't pretend to have my shit together when I'm writing this review. Because I'm not. I need to rave. And to rage.
The fuck Ty. The fuck.
Honestly? I can't stand him. Why, oh why Brynn do you incline towards him? Why do you think you are in love with him? He has done nothing to deserve it. He has done absolutely nothing but complicate your plans time and time again. Not only does he put your life in danger over and over under the disguise of wanting to be there to protect you, but his presence is absolutely pointless as well. What is attractive about him? What makes you want to be with him? Every interaction you have with him it seems more like a relationship between siblings than one between potential lovers and it just drives me mad. WHY? WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BE WITH THIS BABY?
And Jonah... Poor poor Jonah. How you must feel is beyond me. Being used by everyone like that... Unable to justify yourself. Unable to explain everything, because you, too, were kept in the dark. So much heartache. So much pain, I must imagine. You were the boy who was always willing to help. Who wouldn't back down from any danger. And now this! You didn't know! It is obvious that you didn't know!
But don't worry, baby, Brynn, as dark as her heart might be, believes in you! She knows there is no way you could have been in on everything. She knows it was not your intent. Not after seeing the pain and fright in your eyes at the thought of something happening to her. That kind of reaction can't be faked.
Oh, Jonah, how I wish Eris would simply exterminate Ty. YES, I'M SORRY IF THAT MAKES ME A BITCH. I want Ty out of the picture.
Brynn has always been the most open minded of them all. Why not be open minded about that revelation as well?
Oh, my heart. My poor poor heart. Unable to take the revelations in Rose Tinted.
I can only imagine, if this little MAJOR detail had me flailing like that and wishing I had never started this series (JUST KIDDING THERE IS NO WAY I CAN STOP NOW) what is going to happen to me when I read book three?
Damn you Ms. Camp. Damn you.
For getting me this invested. And for that plot twist.
I am not ok with it.
IT IS NOT OK WHAT YOU DID.
Why not just kill Ty off?
UGH!
*deep breath*
Anyway!
Back to a normal tone now. The writing in Rose Tinted was flowing quite nicely. I would have like metaphors and analogies and all that complex stuff, but this is supposed to be an easy read and to that, it did measure up.
The plot itself - even though that one plot twist killed me - dragged a bit before that. After it? I couldn't wait to get to the resolution of the book, so I might be biased. Generally the book was quick paced. I just wish the twist would have come sooner so we could have found out more about the world they lived in, etc. I feel like there is a lot of explaining left to be done in book three, and I would have preferred it if we'd have already found those things out in Rose Tinted.
There are additional characters introduced in this book. Some of them I really enjoyed reading about, others I thought were simple fillers, keeping me from that twist that felt like a stab in the heart.
Ahhh, I feel myself losing my composure and going on another rave about Jonah, so I am just going to leave it at this.
Eris, please kill off Ty, though. Some people need to be protected from their own choices. And Ty is one of those choices Brynn needs to be protected from.
THIS BOOK!!! I'm so overwhelmed by the awesome in ROSE TINTED that I have two versions for this review, the first is:
Go read this now! Thank me later. You're welcome.
The second involves actual details once I had a second to compose all of my excitement lol:
I normally feel pretty intrepid with second books in dystopian trilogies, they always fall a bit short from the first installment for me. However Rose Tinted does a beautiful job with jumping right back into the story, and staying fast paced and exciting throughout. It's so much fun being on this journey with Brynn, and also really scary and nerve wracking, because awe man does she encounter some straight up crazy things! (Ugh I hate Eris with such passion!)
There are new characters to round out the cast, but there is a wonderful balance with the old gang as well. There is both lots of team work and a complete lack thereof in finding out about the mysteries surrounding the "Angels" and the lives everyone leads. These character dynamics are refreshing and the reveals they/we encounter are unexpected and heart wrenching. I felt so much for these fictional characters, and yeah, I cried, sue me...
As for the "love triangle," I usually have a love/hate relationship with the concept, but it was handled in such a real and new way, so kuddos Author! I'm always squarely rooting for one "Team," but I was just as torn between Ty and Jonah as Brynn was. I loved that amidst all the action, there were still time for these characters to just talk and maybe even kiss ;)
Sorry this review is getting long, let me wrap up a few other things I very much enjoyed: the world building was great, there was surprising character development in places I didn't expect, the dialogue was hilarious (especially with Rusty), the impact of what was happening really hit, and it was wonderful to see how these characters reacted under so much pressure.
This book is a solid read and I most definitely recommended it! Also, I hate the star rating system on here, so FYI I would give this book a 92% :)
This book was read before my Brain Tumor surgery in August 2014. I should have posted a review before surgery, but life was hectic.
I love Shannen Crane Camp’s books! They are always so much fun to read. See a list of some of her other books at the bottom of this review post. Check them ALL out! Rose Tinted is book two in the series so be sure to read Sugar Coated first.
From the very beginning Brynn is going crazy with terrible dreams full of the evil woman. Brynn tries to find a way to take down the bad guys with her friends, but things don’t go as planned. The two main guy characters are so different and make things very entertaining. I’m really looking forward to reading book 3!
Sugar Coated was fun and exciting! Have fun reading this series.

This book.. Oh man! I can't wait for the last one to come out. Like really can't wait. Read it, you won't regret it. I feel into the story on the first page, just like in Sugar Coated. I love everything about this book, except for the fact I have to wait for the final one to come out!
I love this trilogy. I put off reading it as long as I could. I read enough to see Jonah's fate then I paused reading it so it wouldn't feel so long before the third book comes out. I'm hoping Shannen gets it out soon! I can't wait for the next book to see where Eris takes Brynn. This book hooked me more than the first. I felt like I couldn't wait to see what happens next with every page! Loved it! (and if Shannen reads this....I love the name Devey in your book!!!!! I love your personal touches that you add that only a few people who read your books know the background of your characters).
This is the second book in the series. Things are a lot more complicated in this book than the first and there are some big surprises that I didn't see coming and wonder even now what they mean. I don't like how invincible the angles are. There needs to be some weaknesses or everything seems impossible and there is no hope. At this point I see no way they can win against them, but surely they will find a way. The ending was very disturbing and strange. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The second book in the Sugar Coated series does not disappoint. Picking up where the first left off, we join Brynn and her friends as they ally with outsiders to fight the danger that keeps getting closer and closer. With a much more science-fiction feel, it's a roller coaster ride with technologies, new worlds and characters and unspeakable truths. I devoured this within two days, and I'm eagerly awaiting the final book!
