Here's the Thing

Rate this book
A Small Town, Professor/Student, Age Gap, Hidden Identity romance from Amazon best-selling author Susan Henshaw.

A professor with forbidden feelings. A student with a dangerous past. Nine years of wanting comes down to one reckless kiss.

A month ago, Ashton, my best friend’s uncle and my professor, suddenly bows out as my thesis advisor. Now he's here at my boyfriend’s hockey game, date in tow—and I’m a wreck.

My friends were right—these messy, intense feelings are all for Ash, not my boyfriend.

But I can’t want him. Even if he wasn’t my professor, he’s too old, and I have too many secrets.

A professor isn't supposed to fall for his student just like a man isn’t supposed to fall for his niece's best friend. But I’ve managed to do both.

When Tally accepts her boyfriend’s proposal in front of ten thousand cheering fans, I'm gutted. My chance is gone.

Or so I think.

Then I run into her at the restaurant after, and she's near tears. So I walk her outside and hold her until she's done crying.

My family calls me the Golden Boy. The Dupree who always does the right thing. But, when she lays her hand against my cheek and tells me I’m her person?

This Golden Boy is ready to fall from grace.

Perfect for fans who enjoy big emotions, crackling chemistry, steamy kisses, and a touch of suspense. Books in the Seddledowne Series are connected but can be read in any order.

Wow, this story completely took me by surprise! It’s not just a professor-student romance, and yes, there’s an age gap, but there’s so much more to it! Secrets, suspense, mystery, steamy moments, complex family dynamics, and so much more. I don’t want to spoil anything, but wow, again! I finished it all in one day, which was the same day I wrapped up "All to Pieces". Now I’m seriously excited for Ford’s story.

In this story, Tally has a close friendship with her advisor, Ashton, and she’s also close to his family. Out of nowhere, he tells her he can no longer be her advisor, and she’s completely blindsided by it, as well as her own reaction. She’s always seen Ashton as a friend, but now she wonders if her feelings run deeper than she realized. However, she’s in a committed relationship, and now is not the time to confront these feelings. But when her boyfriend is ready to take the next step, Tally is forced to figure out what she truly wants. As she deals with secrets and a lot of back-and-forth emotions, it may be more than Ashton can handle. Ashton has always cared for Tally, but when it seems like she might feel the same, he struggles to keep his hopes in check. Tally is full of contradictions, one moment she’s ready for him, the next she’s pushing him away. Can they figure out what’s really going on between them? And can they make it work? From enemies to friends, to a forbidden relationship, to an age-gap romance, and all the ups and downs in between… it’s going to take work if they want to make it happen.

The chemistry between these two is everything! And all the quotes , poetry, and secret identities. There is SO much packed in this story. So many steamy kisses… but don’t worry, it’s closed-door/fade-to-black. Their first kiss... wow! But also, it's a bit risky and forbidden.

For me, this was a 4.5 read, absolutely wonderful.... rounded up to 5 stars!

CW: While there is no on-page sex, the topic comes up frequently due to Tally’s past trauma. There’s also some innuendo and detailed discussions of some difficult past events. Additionally, Ford (Ashton’s brother) has his own issues that come to light, including drug-related problems.

This was such an emotional and beautiful read! It’s the first book I’ve read by this author, and I absolutely loved it!

Tally has a nice boyfriend, but things are complicated because she’s got some pretty intense feelings for her best friend’s uncle, who also happens to be her professor, and is older than she is.

Even more challenging, she’s hiding some dark secrets that feel impossible to overcome, and could completely destroy their relationship.

The intense romance between Tally and Ashton was fantastic and addicting. I thought Susan skillfully portrayed the spectrum of their love, from uncertainty, to the giddiness of a new relationship, to heartbreak, and then to a solid and enduring love.

The side characters were well-developed and so interesting that I need to go back and read their stories. The pacing and the quick-moving plot were excellent, and I had a hard time putting this book down.

You can expect:
College professor/student
Age gap
He falls first
Dual POV
Suspense and surprises
Hidden identity
Fade to black
Literary quotes
Protective mmc
Great banter
Family bonds
Found family

I completely fell in love with Tally and Ash. As her background came to light, my heart ached for her, and I was so glad she had someone as loving, patient, and understanding as Ash was. They were perfectly matched.

This is a story that will break your heart and then mend it together again. It contains some pretty heavy topics, so be sure to check the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book if you’re concerned.

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

2.5 stars. This was odd in multiple ways. The pacing at the beginning was good but from the middle to the end was erratic, the way the engagement happened was cringey, the suicide attempt was way too easily resolved, the "secret" was so out of left field... I just don't understand? This had so much potential early on but then it just got weird 🙁

If you like super emotional and deep romances, this book might be for you! Susan Henshaw has written some very beautiful characters and has thoughtfully crafted a story around some super heavy topics.

If you decided to pick up this book, please read the content warning at the beginning of the book. this book covers some really heavy topics and although the author did a great job of discussing them, it is so important for readers to understand what they will be reading about before diving into this book.

This book was 3.5 stars for me mostly due to the pacing of the second half; however, I still think it’s a beautiful story and I am looking forward to reading more by Susan Henshaw.

This is a small-town, professor/student, age gap, hidden identity romance, and I friggen loved it. This is my second book I have read in this series, and I now have to grab the first two as I love Susan’s writing.

This was not a light read, it came with some heavy topics such as childhood trauma but Susan gives a good list of content warnings at the beginning of the book. I could not put it down.

This is a closed door romance, with implied intimacy between married couples, and some steamy kisses! But the tension and chemistry was so good!

This book was a huge disappointment. Grab some popcorn and settle in, or scroll down to the "TLDR".

⚠️ ⚠️SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️ ⚠️

I was really excited for this trope, but the writing was too terrible and inconsistent for it to be any good.

Tally only agrees to go out with Ash because her classmate was lusting over him and she started to get jealous (reg flag for Tally), then when she finally goes out on a date with him, she's rude and barely talks to him at all. Oh, and she breaks his nose-GREAT!

If I had to summarize this whole book in one sentence, it's this:
Tally giving Ash WHIPLASH.
She hates him one second, then she likes him and is letting him into her bubble, then she gets scared (she gets scared twice per chapter), then she runs away, repeat. Now, this wouldn't be so bad if the writing wasn't so mediocre, but it was just too much. Seeing Ash be the perfect (and I mean PERFECT) gentleman and friend to her, and then seeing him get hurt and betrayed over and over again was just annoying.

Also, I don't see the need to have the r*pe stuff in this book. It wasn't written in well, and then we find out that Tally could've done more to stop this scenario, but she didn't. What the hell? Her mom wasn't much help, either. SO weird. She was abused by her literal step brother and had two kids by him, that her sister then adopted for her. Then Tallly claims them later on and tells her kids the truth, that she is their mom.... BUT the author doesn't let us in on that moment; it's just mentioned later, that Tally finally told them.

Henshaw puts three pages of content warnings. One page to warn, a second to tell you to go back and read it if you passed it, then a THIRD time she asks you to turn back to the warnings page because, AND I QUOTE, "I don't want any bad reviews or angry emails because you were sideswiped by something that triggers you." WELL DAMN, OKAY GIRL! Tell us how ya really feel. Homegirl just wants good reviews. Well, maybe write better next time! HAHA! Anyways that sounds rude, sorry.

I liked the whole thing where Ash and Tally ended up being the two incognito book authors online (they were co-authors for an ebook) without even knowing, and the reveal to that was pretty neat, but of course it was sad because that's how Ash finds out that Tally was r*ped (she had told ash via their secret online book chat that she's been sexually abused to help him understand that she needed more time to write a spicy book chapter, that it was a bit triggering for her). The whole ebook thing then eventually just becomes irrelevant because the way the story goes, so yeah there's that.

WOAH I CAN'T BELIEVE I haven't mentioned that crazy proposal and break up + kissing scene right in the beginning of the book. Madden proposes to Tally and she says yes (because it was in front of an entire hockey arena, so of course she has to say yes), but then instead of pulling him to the side and saying, "hey, sorry but I don't see that as a good move for us right now, sorry", she goes to an after party to celebrate the engagement and MAKES OUT WITH ASH, breaking Madden's heart and confusing everything. It was weird and not enjoyable to read. What WAS all that? Yeah, we get to see Ash squirm and get super sad and jealous while the proposal's happening, but that's it.

Oh, what's with all this build up about Tally being scared about having sex, and then on her FIRST real date with Ash, she's ready for him to sleep with her? Ash is like, "Tally, WHAT are you doing!?" and she's all like thinking she needs to let him have her or he'll walk away from the relationship!! Tally, by this time, HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING ABOUT ASH??? He has proven that he cares for you, isn't just trying to BE with you like that, and honestly respects your wishes and boundaries. How insulting was that for her to feel like she needed to sleep with him for him to stick around. Poor Ash! 🤣

OH MY GOSH another bad part was the way Tally and Ash got engaged. She found the ring box by accident, opened it, PUT THE RING ON, has to run to the kitchen because she heard one of her kids having an accident, Ash's mom sees the ring and thinks they got engaged (she's upset she didn't hear about it first; typical annoying mom), Ash is there and his whole face falls (he's so sad she ruined the surprise), and then Tally proceeds to LIE to Ash's mom that "Ash proposed last night, just the two of us". She spun this whole story about the roses he set up, etc. The whole time Ash is just like denying it and trying to be truthful to his mom and Tally thinks she's making everything better by lying. HAH!!!! This book is just a joke. I mean really, it's annoying to read! It was hard to get through.
THEN Ash is trying to shut down her stupid shenanigans, and Tally replies, "Like I said, I'm getting married- If you don't want to marry me, I'll have to find someone else. But I guess if I want to keep this ring, I need to marry a Dupree. (she turns to Ash's brother, Ford) Want to marry me?"
WHAT THE HECK TALLY! Like, I know she was joking to keep the mood light, but she's throwing layer upon layer of lies and jokes onto this moment and our boy Ash is just a bystander.... falling apart with sadness at having his real proposal surprise ruined. NOT TO MENTION that this matter is VERY delicate because the last proposal Tally got was terrible, ruined, and rushed!!! OH my gosh, Tally is the worst and what is this writing?! 🤣

Also, one of the big tropes this book boasts is the age gap trope; sure, it's age gap, but WHAT is the age gap? How much older is Ash than Tally? Also, this trope isn't really implemented into this book at ALL. Tally calls Ash an "old man" and we know that he's her professor, but that's as far as all that goes. The book says "age gap", so give us some good age gap content! 🤣

One thing too that's just terribly annoying is the dialogue. There are so many cringey parts and they happen at the worst times. It's annoying, unrealistic, and unnecessary.

Lastly, there's just too much about the Dupree family in this book; it's really annoying to read. Then the last like 30% of this book is just a rushed wedding, Tally disappearing, and then Ford being really sad and it takes him literally OD'ing for his family to love on him and get him some help.

TLDR: Trope sounded great but the writing was TERRIBLE, cringey, and annoying. I don't think I'll ever read from Susan Henshaw again. Don't waste your time with this book.... PLEASE!

Here's the Thing is the fourth book in the Seddledown series. While you could probably enjoy this as a standalone, I do think you will get the most out of it if you read the series in order. The Dupree family is large and has its fair share of drama, so I think the relationship dynamics will just make a little more sense to those that have ALL the history.

Ashton and Tally's story has absolutely intrigued me since their first meeting earlier in the series... but admittedly, I was a little apprehensive as well as I don't typically care for the whole professor/student thing. And yet, despite those initial hesitations, I found myself absolutely LOVING this story. It was at times heartbreaking and raw... but also so beautifully written and swoon worthy. That first kiss!? Oh my goodness! It definitely had a whole lot more angst than the books that I typically enjoy reading, but it 100% drew me in and kept me captivated right from the very first page... I love the Dupree family-- they may have their fair share of messiness, but they love big! There was a twist that I absolutely did NOT see coming, keeping me even more on the edge of my seat. Trust me, you're going to want to experience this one for yourself! I have enjoyed every single book in this series, but this one is definitely my favorite so far... I absolutely cannot wait for Ford's story.

Here's the Thing is a closed-door romance but does have a subtle fade to black/implied intimacy between a married couple. There is some minor language throughout as well.

This story does deal with some tough topics that could be triggering to some readers. If you have no triggers and would prefer to avoid potential spoilers, skip over the next paragraph. I do highly recommend reading the author's note before reading though.

Here’s the Thing (Seddledowne #4) by Susan Henshaw
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Standalone * Dual POV * Dark Secrets * Professor x Student * Age Gap * Small Town * Cheating * 364 pages * 🎧10h14

Let me preface this by saying… I bawled. Full ugly tears. I’m not usually someone who cries easily over books, but this one? It wrecked me.

I went with the audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. Both narrators, @brandonfrancisnarrator and @teralyndavis, delivered performances that absolutely floored me. The emotion in their voices took Susan Henshaw’s words to another level. This was my first book by her, but it definitely won’t be my last.

Technically, this is book 4 in the Seddledowne series, following the Dupree siblings, but it works perfectly as a standalone. I picked it up for my October narrator bingo challenge (and because I’ll never resist a professor x student trope).

The characters are layered, real, and beautifully flawed. The Dupree siblings’ dynamic was a standout, so much love, support, and raw emotion. You can tell they’re all carrying their own stories, and I’m already itching to read the rest of the series to uncover them.

The plot has its twists. Some I saw coming, others caught me completely off guard, but even when I guessed correctly, it didn’t matter. The impact still hit hard. Big, fat, juicy tears hard.

There’s no spice here, but don’t let that deter you. This story thrives on its emotion, angst, and depth. Plus, if you’re a fan of English lit, you’ll love the clever banter and literary references sprinkled throughout.

Highly, highly recommend this one, especially in audio. It’s an emotional arrow straight to the heart.

I first discovered Susan Henshaw’s talent with All to Pieces, and while I haven’t yet read the first two books in the series (they’re high on my TBR!), I couldn’t wait to dive into Here’s the Thing. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster that I’m still processing. It wasn’t always what I expected—there were moments the characters frustrated me, and some parts were truly difficult to read—but the way everything came together? Absolutely jaw-dropping. Ashton and Tally’s story, a professor/student, age-gap, small-town romance, is the definition of angsty, slow-burn goodness. I’m not typically a fan of the professor/student trope, but Susan Henshaw played it out so well, and I think it helped that Ashton and Tally were friends beforehand. Their story was raw, heartbreaking, beautifully written, and utterly swoon-worthy. That first kiss? Wow. The angst is heavier than what I usually gravitate toward, but I was hooked from page one and couldn’t stop reading. The Dupree family is one of my favorite fictional families—they may be messy, but they love fiercely! And the twist in this book? I never saw it coming. This story stands out as a memorable addition to the series, and I’m already counting down the days until Ford’s story. If you’re considering picking this one up, note that there are content warnings at the start—don’t overlook them. Here’s the Thing is a closed-door romance with some fade-to-black moments between a married couple and light language. It’s a must-read for fans of emotional, angsty love stories with unforgettable characters!

WOW. WOW. WOW.

Thank you, partner @bookedwiththeemilys and @authorsusanhenshaw for a #gifted copy of this book.

I loved this book. It had the perfect amount of angst, frustration, pining, suspense and love. I loved Anna and Blue’s story but this one may be even better. Ashton and Tally just made the story so easy to read and it made it easy to love the characters. She made the tension palpable while still keeping the bedroom door closed. 🙌. I cannot wait to go back and read the first 2 books of the series. Hopefully there are more to come.

Please check the trigger warnings before reading this book. She has them listed at the beginning of the novel.

People!! If you are sleeping on this series—WAKE UP!! I loved books 1-3, but this book, this book was 🔥🔥🔥

Here’s the Thing is Ashton’s and Tally’s story. The story we have been dying for since he first laid eyes on her back in Not a Thing. It’s been nine years, NINE YEARS, of pining and resisting and torture. The culmination of those intense, forbidden, love-at-first-sight-even though-we-can-never-be-together feelings is earth shattering in the best way.

With hearts and souls being torn in two, slowly mending back together one romantic classical quote at a time, then to be gobsmacked with twist after twist-let’s just say all riders keep your hands and feet in the ride at all times, make sure your safety belts are secured, because this is one exhilarating and dangerous roller coaster ride that you hope never ends.

so more like 4.5⭐️ holy cow That was a lot everything that they went through. Wow I enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure if I was going to because of the trigger warnings but she put this together so perfectly that it's very unlikely you'll actually be triggered. Wonderful writing, spectacular narration from the narrators. This book he's really good

Kaip galvojau, taip ir buvo. Tikrai geriausia serijos dalis (kol kas).

Labai miela knyga su daug dramos ir gerais plot twistais. Nuostabus romanas.

Net pati nesupratau kaip ši serija mane užkabino.

My favorite read of 2024!

I typically provide a summary of the plot in my reviews, following an editorial format, but this is the type of book that you should enter completely blind! If you like the tropes (provided under this review) and swoon over love communicated through literary references, just trust me when I say this book is amazing!

Here’s the Thing has the perfect amount of tension building up to the declaration of love and the major reveal. It’s the kind of slow burn that has you yearning for them to get together yet savoring every minute. When I posted my Currently Reading graphic on Instagram a couple of days ago, I was only 3/4 done and already knew this book would take the top rank in my 2024 reads…but LITTLE DID I KNOW that there was a major twist only a couple of pages later!! And the book just got even better!

The hallmark of an incredible book, in my opinion, is that it deeply impacts you emotionally, bonding you irrevocably to the characters. The feeling is so profound that it lingers with you long after. This book will bring you to your knees.

I’m so excited for Book 5 in the series, and I’ll be reading the first three books and their bonus epilogues in the meantime!

Each time I read another book in this series I tell myself it can’t possibly get any better & Susan proves me wrong every single time.
Tally & Ashton’s story was thrilling, mysterious, sweet, & totally binge worthy! I was not prepared at all for Tally’s backstory. I love Ashton’s heart, he waited 9 years for Tally knowing she might never love him like he did. To stay away because he was older. What a gentleman. I’d love for my boys to be like the Dupree’s, well maybe except Ford’s rock & roll lifestyle lol. I can’t recommend this series enough. Susan can write a heck of a story that draws you in completely! I can’t wait for Ford’s story, I got a feeling it will be my favorite!

CW: it is fade to black, deals with every traumatic experiences (one that is mentioned in the beginning of the book but I can’t say for spoilers sake) so definitely check trigger warnings. It is a clean read other than that.

I have some mixed feelings about this one. I wanted to love it so much but I just didn't. I did like the tropes and that was initially what made me excited to read it, it just didn't pan out in a way that I found satisfying or enjoyable for a romance.

**MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW**

This started off STRONG. The chemistry was there and that first kiss... 🔥🔥🔥 (although, fair warning, the FMC is engaged to someone else at this point. the MCs are cheating, it did bother me but I kept reading). And even though the feelings were there from the beginning, the push and pull of Tally and Ash was just so good.

But then it started to go down hill for me. Starting with the engagement... like the day after they became a couple. It was wayyy to fast for my enjoyment. Then there were a few big reveals regarding Tally's past. One or two of them would have worked for me but it just kept getting more and more dramatic and I found that it just annoyed me.

I really couldn't get through this book, I DNF'd it. I'm sorry but for me Ashton deserved so much more.
I can't and don't understand Tally, I know she went through bad things and was still dealing with complications in her life but the way she treated Ash? I can't understand how she stayed in a relationship with a stranger for 4 years and went and treated Ash like a threat on the first date, like he was going to hurt her. On top of that she breaks his nose and when he confronts her she says it was because her classmate was attracted to him? Then days later she gets mad because he won't treat her the same or kiss the ground he walks on? No, I'm sorry I can't. Ash deserves much better treatment.
I'm also not going to read Ford's book because nothing you tell me can convince me that forbidding a man from parenting for 13 years is okay. Using him and mistreating him while lying to him is just a NO for me.

Here’s the Thing completely took me by surprise in the best possible way. What begins as a forbidden professor–student romance quickly evolves into a deeply emotional, beautifully written story about growth, healing, and the messy, complicated sides of love. Susan Henshaw balances heartbreak and hope with effortless grace, crafting characters that feel so real you can’t help but ache for them. Tally and Ashton’s story isn’t just about falling in love it’s about finding yourself, confronting your past, and realizing that sometimes, the right person enters your life at the most impossible time. The age gap and forbidden dynamic add just the right amount of tension, but it’s the emotional honesty that truly steals the show. If you’re looking for a romance that feels tender, thoughtful, and real, this one is going to stay with you long after the final page.

The Story
Tally is finishing her final semester, juggling her thesis, her uncertain relationship, and the daunting pressure of figuring out her future. When her advisor unexpectedly steps away and Professor Ashton Dupree steps in, everything changes. Their connection is instant built on respect, friendship, and quiet admiration that slowly turns into something neither of them can deny. But with a strict professional line between them and Ashton’s own moral compass holding him back, they’re both forced to navigate forbidden feelings in a world that would never understand. Their journey is emotional, complicated, and full of moments that break your heart and heal it right after.

What I Loved
✔️ The beautiful, character-driven writing that captures emotion so authentically
✔️ The forbidden, slow-burn connection between Ashton and Tally that feels both tender and powerful
✔️ The balance of vulnerability, heartbreak, and healing
✔️ The way Henshaw weaves heavier themes with hope and emotional depth
✔️ The chemistry not spicy, but emotionally charged and deeply felt
✔️ The small-town backdrop that makes the story feel intimate and grounded

🎧 Narration
Narrated in dual by Teralyn Davis and Brandon Francis, this audiobook is a perfect example of how great narration can elevate a story. Their performances are emotional and immersive you can feel the tension, the longing, and the quiet heartbreak in every word. Teralyn captures Tally’s strength and vulnerability perfectly, while Brandon gives Ashton a warmth and sincerity that make his internal struggles hit even harder. Together, they make this story come alive in a way that’s both intimate and powerful.

Tropes & Vibes
✔️ Forbidden Romance
✔️ Professor / Student Dynamic
✔️ Age Gap (9 Years)
✔️ Emotional, Closed-Door Romance
✔️ Small Town Setting
✔️ Healing and Growth
✔️ Deep Connection & Slow Burn

Final Thoughts
Here’s the Thing is so much more than a forbidden love story it’s an emotional journey about redemption, self-discovery, and finding love when you least expect it. Susan Henshaw proves once again that she can craft a romance that is layered, raw, and incredibly human. With no spice but plenty of depth, this story shows that intimacy isn’t just about touch it’s about connection, understanding, and the courage to choose love against all odds. Tender, emotional, and quietly powerful, this book is one that lingers.

Here's the Thing ... This was like three books in one for me and I thought it was amazing. This is my first novel by Susan Henshaw and book # 4 in the Seddledowne Series. If the first three are anything like this one, I cannot wait to read them!

🚫 There are some trigger warnings to be aware of : attempted suicide, PTSD, shooting, sexual abuse. There is TALK about sex, but there are no written, detailed scenes on the page. There is minimal swearing, and it is just overall, very tastefully written. 🚫

This story follows Tally, our main female character, who is working hard to complete her current semester in school, write her thesis and then finally get to graduation. Her current advisor, Professor Ashton Dupree, completely throws her off track after class one day, when he tells her that he has transferred her to a new advisor because he no longer thinks it's a good idea for it to be him. What makes this even harder to comprehend is that Ashton & Tally are friends, why would he do this and why is she having this much of a reaction to the whole situation? Maybe her feelings for Ash are stronger than she has ever wanted to admit. To make matters more complicated, her boyfriend of four years has proposed- feeling put on the spot, she says yes, but knows in her gut this isn't the right decision. Tally needs to work out her feelings about Ash- and when she runs into him, alone, right before she and her fiancé are about to tell his parents the news about their engagement- she takes the opportunity.

Legit, this is not even half of the story. It is PACKED with so much and I am in awe of the author for so flawlessly connecting these different seasons of the character's lives into this beautiful novel. You will find romance, family drama, a little bit of mystery, suspense and most importantly, a HEA. These characters are not one-dimensional. They are layered with complexities and when you think you know all there is to know, you're hit with something even bigger. Even with so much going on, the writing flowed so smoothly, and the entire story was easy to follow.

I was able to listen to the audio version and Teralyn Davis and Brandon Francis did a wonderful job. Their performance was engaging, paced well and very enjoyable! Their emotions throughout the audiobook were delivered very authentically. It was easy to connect with the characters and vividly picture each scene as it was happening.

Thank you, High Gravity Productions, for this gifted early listening copy! All opinions are my own.

Emotional age gap small town romance

4.25⭐️ 1🌶️ Book 4 in the Seddledowne series—small town age gap Professor/student romance that deals with a lot of intense emotions but has some LOL moments, a big involved family, and heart. This is my 4th book by this author, and I will be reading more. 🙌🏻 I hope more characters from previous books in this series get their story.

Ashton (Ash) Dupree is a college professor, and Tally Hawkins is in a Masters program and one of his students. They met 9 years ago and Ash has been in love with her ever since but has never told her (she’s his student + has a longtime boyfriend). When they finally get their chance, Tally tells Ash about some of her past. But she doesn’t tell him everything and she’s still running. Ash is all in, though, and I loved how fully and completely he accepts Tally and all of her trauma/scars. They are endgame, and Ash cannot imagine a life without Tally. She doesn’t think she’s worthy of his goodness but Ash thinks she’s sunshine and hung the moon.

Favorite quotes:
‘You're my best friend, my favorite person.’

‘Maybe I would get the girl in the end. But I
doubted it was Tally. I wouldn't beg her to love me. I was holding out for a love like my two older brothers had.’

‘I'd given her everything I had in that kiss. My heart, my soul, every hope for a future together. And it hadn't been enough. I wasn't enough for her.’

"I love you. I always have.
"No. You can't. You can't."
"I do. It's just a fact, the same way the sun rises every morning. It's like God made my heart for one purpose and one purpose only. To love Tallulah Hawkins."

“You're running from the opportunity to be loved. Why?"
"What if I can't? What if I'm too broken?”
"You're not broken. You're healing.”

‘I'm not worthy of him. He's so much better than me. I'm dirty and used. I'm not good. Not like him.’

Tally is a student who attends her best friend’s uncle’s class. Tally is close to this uncle professor, Ashton and can get away with certain things in class like having her phone out until one day he grabs her phone during class and asks to speak to her after class. Her friend/classmate, Ashley, is going crazy with ideas of what could possibly happen after class because Professor Dupree is so hot, but that’s not supposed to mean anything to Tally since she is in a long term relationship with her boyfriend, Madden.

After class, Tally makes herself comfortable at Professor Dupree’s office by grabbing a soda from his fridge and plopping her legs on his lap. She asks him what’s up and Professor Dupree says that he can no longer be her advisor and has passed her onto another professor. Tally cannot believe what she is hearing, but Ashton makes it very clear that he cannot be her advisor since he doesn’t feel like she respects him as a teacher, which is slightly true.

Madden is a popular sports player and the paparazzi definitely follow him for pictures and gossip. During a game, Madden proposes to Tally and she says yes. Ashton wasn’t supposed to be there, but a typo on a text has Ashton present for this proposal. He’s a little bit heartbroken, but Tally was never interested in him and there’s a big age gap that she just wouldn’t be interested in him at all.

While the newly engaged couple celebrate, Tally steps away and Ashton follows her to make sure she is okay. One thing leads to another and they are kissing! Madden sees this and the paparazzi are able to get pictures of this whole scene.

What happens to Tally and Madden? How does Ashton handle all of this?

I really enjoyed this book and definitely appreciated the author’s TW, which was done 3 times before the book. There are some heavy topics, but the author did an amazing job writing with such care and with only the necessary details rather than including the super graphic details. As a reader, you can fill in the blank with what happened to Tally in the past.

I loved the relationships Tally has and appreciate the struggle, the strength, and the support that Tally has.

Every trip to Seddledowne gets better and better! This was by far my favorite of Susan’s books. I adored Ashton and Tally together and the incredible amount of character development that took place during this emotional story! I also really enjoyed the story within the story (they’re in a college English department after all)!

Synopsis:
A professor with forbidden feelings. A student with a dangerous past. Nine years of wanting comes down to one reckless kiss.

Tally:
A week ago, Ashton, my best friend’s uncle, bowed out as my thesis advisor. Now he’s here at my boyfriend’s hockey game, date in tow—and I’m a wreck.

My friends were right—these messy, intense feelings are all for Ash, not my boyfriend. But I can’t want him. Even if he wasn’t my professor, he’s too old, and I have too many secrets.

Ashton:
A professor isn’t supposed to fall for his student just like a man isn’t supposed to fall for his niece’s best friend. But I’ve managed to do both. When Tally accepts her boyfriend’s proposal in front of ten thousand cheering fans, I’m gutted. My chance is gone. Or so I think.

Then I run into her at the restaurant after, and she’s near tears. So I walk her outside and hold her until she’s done crying. My family calls me the Golden Boy. The Dupree who always does the right thing. But, when she lays her hand against my cheek and tells me I’m her person? This Golden Boy is ready to fall from grace.

Susan Henshaw’s Here’s the Thing, narrated by Teralyn Davis and Brandon Francis, is a beautifully complex romance that is much more than a simple professor-student, age-gap story. It’s an emotional and addictive tale packed with secrets, suspense, and steamy moments.

The story follows Tally, a student who is blindsided when her handsome thesis advisor, Ashton Dupree, suddenly resigns. Their close friendship has always been strictly platonic, but her reaction makes her question if her feelings run deeper. To complicate matters, she has a boyfriend and feels like she's at a crossroads.

For Ashton, the lines have been blurred for a while. He knows a good man doesn’t fall for his student, but he can't ignore the strong feelings he has for Tally. He planned to wait until after she graduated to confess his feelings, but when she tells him he's "her person," everything changes. The intense attraction between them is undeniable, but Tally's back-and-forth emotions and the secrets she's hiding make a future together seem impossible.

The chemistry between Tally and Ashton is fantastic and completely addicting. The narration by Teralyn Davis and Brandon Francis is brilliant, bringing every moment to life, from the giddiness of a new relationship to the heartbreak of their complicated situation. Henshaw skillfully portrays their love story as it evolves, and the addition of a thrilling plot with clever twists will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book is a must-read, and I can't wait to see what the author writes next!

Forbidden fruit never tasted so angsty 🍎🔥 Here’s the Thing by Susan Henshaw gave me ALL the emotions; academic pressure, forbidden romance, messy relationships, family secrets, and a slow-burn that had me yelling “just kiss already!” at my earbuds.

Tally’s juggling a thesis, a long-term boyfriend who feels meh at best, and the inconvenient truth that her heart only races around one man, Professor Ashton Dupree. Nine years isn’t that big of an age gap…unless he’s grading your papers. 👀

🎧 The real magic? Teralyn Davis and Brandon Francis. These two absolutely embodied Tally and Ash. Teralyn’s delivery gave Tally the perfect mix of vulnerability and fire, while Brandon’s broody, conflicted Ashton had me swooning every time he spoke. Their chemistry leapt off the audio, making the forbidden tension feel deliciously real.

And can we talk about the layers in this story? Romance, secrets, family drama, suspense... it wasn’t just one love story, it was a whole emotional tapestry. I never felt lost, just completely invested.

✨ Tropes & vibes:
📚 Forbidden/Professor–Student
💍 Wrong Fiancé / Meant-to-Be
🔥 Slow Burn, Heavy Tension
🤐 Secrets & Family Drama
💞 Found Family / Small Town

This one was poignant, layered, and satisfying with a hard-won HEA. I’ll definitely be diving into more of this series.

Huge thanks to Susan Henshaw and High Gravity Productions for the ALC
