Cues Or Consequences: From The Dog's Point Of View

Rate this book
How did wolves evolve into dogs? Since there isn’t any documentation from thousands of years ago, we can only assume wolves domesticated themselves, causing a change in their genetic structure, their DNA, resulting in the dog.

Dogs have brilliantly evolved in many ways, but not enough to understand language. Our innate, biological capacity to use words trips them up all the time. It is unfair to handicap them by trying to make them fit into our verbally based approach to training. Words mean nothing to them no matter how many times or how loud we say them. Each word must be taught to have meaning. Your dog doesn’t know anything about training, but he does know how to learn.

My methods require a unique thought process, but the power they have is incredible. They are unlike the most frequently used method which utilizes corrections, suppression, and dominance theories to teach new responses and change unwanted existing ones. They are very different from the current trend of luring the dog into position by having him follow a treat, and clicker training where the marker ends the behavior, although both food and markers are extensively used in my program.

Would it make you feel more confident if you knew that your dog could be startled by something unexpected in the environment, recover quickly, and continue what he was doing? Would you like your laid-back dog to be more committed to performing, or your high energy dog to be more reliable because his emotions are under control? If you are training a companion dog, or a competitive partner, if your dog is emotionally balanced, he can commit to what you have asked him to do, and your performance will improve. Just how dramatic the improvement can be will astound you!
