Ethan West just wants what everybody wants who struggles to succeed in a breakthrough, a hit – even a small one – that might change the trajectory of his years of frustration and heartbreak in the entertainment rat-race. To be in the loop! Like most, one too many bad breaks has him on the verge of throwing in the towel for good, but a chance encounter with a cult showbiz icon turns his world upside-down. Suddenly Ethan and his tiny, loyal cadre of fellow hopefuls are shanghaied as crew on a movie-making "project" they'll never forget – if they can survive it – trapped in a jungle nightmare; armed only with video cameras and their theater brat wits; led by a fading, deranged, megalomaniac Hollywood director without a script or a grip on reality; in the path of lethal animals, rogue mercenaries and rampaging cannibals; and ordered to get it all in high-def! As the production drifts further into surreal chaos, bloodlust and contrived 'reality,' Ethan realizes he must choose, either to follow an insane celebrity to certain doom, or possibly sacrifice his own friends to make it back to civilization – with or without a finished product in the can! Of course, it's a comedy!Rob Foster's insanely funny novel 'JUST WRONG' will have you cringing on the floor with laughter, at a bizarre breed who will throw away friendships, morals, sense and dignity for an allusive, fleeting prize called fame.
What do you sacrifice to get the perfect scene? The perfect shot? The perfect angle? Whatever it takes. "Just Wrong" is one of those books that had me laughing one moment and my mouth agape the next, sometimes finding myself trying to wrap my head around what just happened. And just when you think you have things figured out, you find out you're wrong. Dead wrong. Foster's characters are so well-developed you feel you might have seen them somewhere before, or that you've even met them in person. His writing is funny, witty, brilliant, and a bit disturbing... but in a good way. Not only is this a cleverly written plot that keeps you guessing and on your toes the entire time, Foster's descriptive writing is stellar and probably one of the wittiest writers I've ever read. I am certainly looking forward to reading more of his work! (I'm not typically a fan of trigger warnings, but this book is definitely not for the weak due to graphic scenes of violence, so read with caution.)
Some of my favorite lines from the book (I usually only refer to a few, but I had over 90 highlighted in this book alone):
"Then my eardrums whistled, like every metal band on earth making their speakers feedback." "My five years of pretending to be in show business was melting like Margaret Hamilton assaulted with a SuperSoaker." "His eyes, glowing darkly like shiny licorice jellybeans, did not blink." "A hundred nightmares flapped through my mind on wings of moldy shower curtain plastic." "Jonathan was... inverted, and smearing into the air around him, like a tie-dye." "I couldn't feel myself care. I was already crushed to powder."
