An Unexpected Kiss

Rate this book
A kiss is just a kiss—or is it?

Three families—the Worthingtons, Alingtons, and Fultons. Ten cousins named for Roman and Byzantine rulers and their spouses. And ten occasions when a kiss which will change everything for the couple involved.

Welcome to the new Regency world created by best-selling author Alexa Aston in Captivating Kisses!

A common laborer who becomes a marquess. A caring debutante who wants to be more than a pretty face in a pretty gown. An unexpected kiss, which changes the course of their lives . . .

London dockworker Julian Watts was born out of wedlock. Raised by his seamstress mother, he has only known gnawing poverty. Through a remarkable discovery, he morphs into Julian Barrington, Marquess of Aldridge. Thrust into a world he never imagined, Julian grapples with his newfound status and the weight of the responsibilities that come with it.

Lady Ariadne Worthington is on the verge of making her come-out when she meets her family’s new neighbor, a titled gentleman that she is inexplicably drawn to. Lord Aldridge becomes friendly with her brother and cousin, and the more time she spends in the marquess’ company, the more their attraction grows.

An unexpected kiss from Julian leads Ariadne to believe he will pursue her, but once the Season begins, he dashes her hopes, ignoring her and dancing with nothing but wallflowers. As a diamond of the first water, Ariadne has her pick of suitors, yet the come-out Season she had long looked forward to now holds no appeal because of her broken heart.

Will Julian find the courage to conquer his self-doubts and court the love he so desperately desires, or will he allow his feelings of inadequacy to prevent him—and Ariadne—from finding lasting love?

Each book in Captivating Kisses is a standalone story that can be enjoyed out of order.

genre/tropes: historical romance,

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an ARC!

Julian has spent his entire life unaware of his true lineage as the son of a Duke. But when his mother dies, he discovers his father on his deathbed and unexpectedly inherits the title of Duke of Barrington. Ariadne is a lady with a heart of gold and the eldest daughter of her family, making her debut this season.

I love how both characters interact and banter with each other. In a way, they both need one another—Julian relies on Ariadne’s advice and expertise to help him navigate his new role, while Ariadne depends on Julian for support and protection as she pursues her interests (a.k.a helping the needy & pursuing her hobbies).

Historical romances are one of my top genres to read. I love how the book slowly simmered the slow-burn romance, adding just a pinch of tension to keep me hooked! However, there were a few things that felt off to me. I think the writing could have flowed better—for example, the descriptions were too direct and lacked the depth of emotion needed to fully immerse me in the story. I’d prefer if the information wasn’t just handed to me but rather revealed naturally, allowing me to read, observe, and draw my own conclusions. But most of the dialogue was well-done and chefs kiss!

All in all, this book was a cute read for those who like historical romances and slow burn.

This is my 51st book by Alexa Aston. I only started reading her in early 2021 and LOVE her books. She is such a great writer and great storyteller. She isn't super steamy but just enough and her writing is so good, I don't care. :) Definitely one of my favorite authors. So glad to see a new series out by her.

So I liked Julian and Ariadne as a couple. They seemed perfect for each other. I liked her family and cousin. I even liked the story and how Julian started in life. The characters even had depth but there was just something missing with this story. Not sure what it was. It was not my favorite read by her and I really enjoy almost all her books. I mean it was good just maybe it was just a bit boring??? Not really sure.

The first in a new series, this was a nice neighbours to lovers romance.
Do check out the blurb [swipe left] I couldn’t possibly introduce this story any better!

Ariadne & Julian
They spark from their very first meeting, tense and inappropriate as it may have been.
Since she’s a kind and caring young woman, she senses there’s more to this surly man, and sets her big brother upon him to help him find his footing - and maybe keep him in her orbit just that little bit longer. He’s smart enough to accept every bit of help that’s offered, and the lady is most appealing - even if he believes she’s far too good for him.

I liked Ariadne a lot; she’s the most down-to-earth duke’s daughter I’ve read in a long time. She knows she’s privileged, sees those less fortunate and is determined to make a difference. She also knows her parents have no interest in their daughters, and so she carefully navigates her life guided by her loving brother. A brother who was a bit too squeaky clean for my liking, but maybe there’s hidden depths coming in the next books?
Julian is an interesting man as well; he came from nothing and now has everything. He’s a fish out of water, uncomfortable, but he’s clever, charming and takes his new responsibilities very serious. He cares and he never forgets where he came from - and that’s not always a good thing.

They have wonderful chemistry, and there’s some nice sizzle with just a splash of steam at the end, but it all felt a bit too vanilla, too predictable, too easy. I usually love this author’s books, but this story felt different and the writing felt somewhat wooden. I missed the usual effortless warmth, that easy flow laced with humour.
I don’t quite know how I feel about this book. Maybe it’s because it was a tad crowded - inevitable when introducing a large new series - or maybe the story just missed that extra bit of punch? Maybe this was the first pancake? Either way, I’m still looking forward to finding out where this series takes me.

I love the author’s books & this series starter didn’t disappoint in any way. Strong characters, a well paced story, sizzling chemistry & lovely (well mostly) secondary characters had me reading it straight through & once again burned the midnight oil to do so. I loved both Julian & Ariadne who were attracted to each other from their first meeting but he’s still struggling to come to terms with his new status & believes she’s too good for him. She’s mature for a debutante &is lucky to have her siblings & cousins as her parents especially her mother have no interest in her. The couple are both caring & wanting to help those in poverty. I loved their journey to a HEA & look forward to the rest of the series especially Val’s story who was toe curlingly gorgeous

Once again Alexa Aston has created a story full of intrigue, romance, perfectly flawed characters, and a plot that swept me away to another time. I highly enjoyed this book!

An unexpected discovery changes the life of a dock worker to a marquess. From a walk in a garden, Lady Ariadne Worthington meets Julian Barrington, the new Marquess of Aldridge. He needs a little polish, so she asks her brother, Val, to reach out to Julian in friendship. Her cousin, Con, joins in to also become his friend. The three will guide Julian through the season. As the new marquess, he needs a wife, but he's already decided on Ariadne. It's that first kiss that leaves her breathless. Suddenly, Julian backs off from his pursuit leaving her heartbroken and confused. Ariadne is not going to let him go without a fight. A strong woman always makes for an interesting read. I can tell from reading this first book in the series, the rest will be worth waiting for.
Mild descriptive sex.

Earnest. That’s the word for this book.

Our down-to-earth hottie was surprised to inherit a title. Our diamond of the first water heroine helped him fit in. Found family, being honest with one another, honour, cuteness.

It was so earnest! It felt like a k-drama. There was something really charming and cozy about it. The characters were all likable, everything happened on page, he didn’t think he deserved her, they were pining. It was super sweet.

The writing style was very on the nose, though. And it had one of my least favourite things holding them apart (the ‘I love you too much to be with you’ trope). But I forgive it.

I read this as an ARC but these thoughts are all mine.

If you like your historical romances to be historically accurate, then this one will NOT be for you. To begin with, Ariadne is afforded the opportunity to meet Julian because she goes off "for a walk" unchaperoned, and then speaks to the man despite knowing better.

Then later on, Ariadne talks about how her mother neglected her duties. Going on to say how her BROTHER filled in the necessary gaps regarding etiquette, the behavior expected from her, and .... even the marriage bed. I'm sorry? Since when do brothers give their sisters advice like that? This is funnier considering Ariadne is one of the ones giving Julian not only societal cues, but also teaching him how to dance and how to play cards.

And while this is also historically inaccurate, I also believe it had the potential to add some drama to this story. You see the old Marquess did something unthinkable for the time. When he got Julian's mother pregnant, he married her in secret (leaving a record of it). Then he went on to (illegally) marry three more times. Thankfully none of those women ever gave birth because can you imagine the scandal?! Honestly, I don't know which side-plot I would have liked more. If Julian had to oust the poor guy who had been raised thinking he was the heir, or if he had inherited six sisters all needing a come-out. Both of those things would have been better than all of the things these two had in common, but refused to speak about.

As it stands, there was no drama to this novel. There was nothing standing in the way of their happiness expect Julian's own "imposter syndrome". Something that could have easily been remedied had they only spoken to one another sooner. They both wanted to help the poor of London, but because of his "humble beginnings" he felt he wasn't worthy of her? Good gracious. Watching these two stumble about was boring.

However, the fact this was a slow burn romance that kept sex to the marriage bed instead of the books I usually read where the main characters sleep together and then decide they are in love? I will read book number two in this series based on that alone.

A nice, easy flowing story and a good start to the new series with neighbors to lovers and a touch of reverse "My Fair Lady" tropes, very likable characters and a bit of steam. Julian is a sweet cinnamon roll hero who took my heart by storm with his insecurities. Ariadne is a kind and compassionate heroine who is torn between the world of luxury and the urge to help the poor. I found it heartwarming how Julian's employees stood by his side and lovingly guided him. Ariadne's brother Val and her cousin Con are also endearing characters and I'm looking forward to their stories.

Julian Watts has lived in poverty with his mother since birth and thought he was a bastard. But after her death, he discovers by chance that he is in fact
Julian Barrington, the legitimate son of the Marquess of Aldridge. When his father dies immediately afterwards, Julian suddenly finds himself in a new life in which he can hardly find his way around. By chance, he meets Lady Ariadne Worthington, the daughter of the Duke of Millbrooke, who takes him under her wing.
Ariadne has travelled to London for her debut season and is looking forward to making new friends, but the poverty she sees on the streets of London dampens her joy. She is more than willing to support her socially awkward neighbour as he enters society and, along with her brother Val and cousin Con, she tutors Julian and helps him make new acquaintances.
Ariadne and Julian become increasingly attracted to each other, but after an unexpected kiss, Julian suddenly distances himself, believing that Ariadne deserves better than him...

If you like socially awkward heroes and kindhearted heroines, you will enjoy this book!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Very predictable. Rushed plot. Timing is too "perfect." Has an explicit scene.

This was my first time reading a book by this author. I was interested at first and the chemistry/friendship seemed to be building naturally, but I found myself rolling my eyes too much before long. Events and conversations in the plot happened "too perfectly" right when they needed to happen and/or the author wanted them to happen. And, things became even more rushed just to tie up everything before the book ended. They were in love all of a sudden, wanted to get married asap, got permission asap, etc. (I'm trying not to say too many spoilers, but "perfectly timed" things occurred before these moments too.) The explicit scene was weird because it felt forced - as if the author needed to "show" their chemistry and physical connection, not because the reader actually believed and felt that chemistry long before this scene. And, while the book had a good ending (in that it tied up loose ends and aligned with the characters' desires), it was just checking boxes off the list to make sure everything worked out smoothly and ended happily-ever-after. I was hoping to find a new author and series that I would like...and, don't get me wrong, I don't mind a book to be predictable (because sometimes we just need a quick, easy read)..... but this was just too much and "too perfect." If it hadn't had the explicit scene, I would have assumed it was written for teenagers. I can't continue this series and probably won't give this author a try again. Such a bummer. I read a lot of Regency books. This one just wasn't great. I don't understand the high star ratings.

This charming Regency romance introduces a vibrant new world populated by three interconnected families and ten couples whose lives are forever altered by a single, life-changing kiss. In this particular story, we follow Julian Watts—born into poverty and thrust unexpectedly into nobility as the new Marquess of Aldridge—and Lady Ariadne Worthington, a bright debutante with a strong sense of self-worth and a heart ready to love.
The chemistry between Julian and Ariadne is instant and palpable, yet complications of class, self-doubt, and heartbreak turn their romance into an emotional rollercoaster. Julian’s internal struggle with imposter syndrome is both believable and heart-wrenching, while Ariadne’s journey from infatuation to disillusionment and, eventually, hope again, is portrayed with sensitivity and grace.
The author skillfully blends heartfelt emotion and romantic tension, and rhe Regency elegance shines through. The book deftly balances personal growth, societal expectations, and the slow-burning build of a second-chance romance—all set against a lush historical backdrop.
This is the perfect read if you enjoy historical romance with depth, emotional stakes, and just the right touch of drama.

What a delightful and heartwarming Regency romance that marks the beginning of the Captivating Kisses series. The story revolves around Lady Ariadne Worthington, a caring debutante who dreams of being more than just a pretty face, and Julian Barrington, Marquess of Aldridge, a common laborer who unexpectedly becomes a marquess.

Julian, raised in poverty, grapples with his newfound status and the responsibilities that come with it. Ariadne, on the verge of her debut, finds herself inexplicably drawn to Julian, who happens to be her family's new neighbor. Their attraction grows, culminating in an unexpected kiss that changes everything. However, Julian's self-doubts and the social expectations create a bumpy journey for their growing attraction.

I love this author's writing, which is both engaging and evocative, bringing the characters and the Regency world to life. The chemistry between Ariadne and Julian is so fun and entertaining, making it impossible to put the book down. This couple's story is a must-read for fans of historical romance and a promising start to an enchanting series. An Unexpected Kiss is the first in the new series Captivating Kisses. This series features three families. The Worthington's, Alington's, and the Fulton's.

Lady Ariadne Worthington is about to make her debut in society. She and her parents make the trip to London to order her many gowns for the upcoming season. She meets one of her neighbors and is instantly taken with him.

Julian Watts believes he was born out of wedlock. After his mother's death he finds the papers and a few letters which tell a different story than he has been led to believe. He turns to his mentor for assistance and soon finds that he is the only heir to the Marquess of Aldridge. This news changes the course of his future. He meets Ariadne and is also drawn to her but believes he is not worthy of pursuing her to be his future wife.

An unexpected kiss from Julian leads Ariadne to hope for a future with the new heir. She will have her work cut out for her to show him that he is everything she is looking for in a husband.

This was a wonderful start for this new series. Great characters and fun storyline.

Polite Society, Fate, Family, Delightful:
I absolutely loved Julian the poor incredibly handsome dock worker who became the Marquess after the death of his unknown father.
His life has now changed, and destiny is now on his doorstep when he happens to meet his neighbor Ariadne a beautiful girl ready for her first season to start.
Fast friends Ariadne helps Julian through many situations that polite society demands along with some blossoming attraction.
This is a lovely story that starts a new series that involves a large family and follows some of the characters into their own story that brings forth more first kisses that leads to more smoldering ones.
A lighthearted read involving family and friend dynamics, snooty mothers, doubts, desires, and a few eye-opening shocks I didn't see coming.
😭Tissue Box Moment: When Julian meets up with parts of his family.

She is starting to like him and when he reveals her his life she falls for him even more . Julian thanks to her encouragment is good friend with her brother Val and cousin Con . A shocking revelation leads dockworker, Julian Watts, to be thrust into Polite Society; a world he has no idea how to navigate.

Julian's cluelessness made him a rather endearing character and I enjoyed how outspoken and headstrong Ariadne was, the combination made for a truly refreshing dynamic between the two of them. However, I thought the relationship conflict was a bit silly and unnecessary and it caused Julian to become quite annoying. I also wasn't a massive fan of the writing style and I found the pacing of the book a little odd. I did however love the friendship between Julian, Val, and Con and I can really see how the author is setting up more stories in this universe. Overall, I think if you're looking for a quick and fun historical romance this is definitely a good choice.

Believing himself to be the illegitimate son of a seamstress, Julian is shocked to learn that he is the legitimate son and heir to the marquess. His life takes a very different turn when he inherits and takes on the title and wealth. He’s lucky to meet his neighbor, Lady Ariadne in their shared garden, who tasks her brother to assist Julian on his entry into society. Ariadne is the daughter of a duke making her debut this season and is a bit stifled by her parents’ expectations. She would much rather do some good in the world by caring for the less fortunate. She’s hoping to find a match that would support her goals. It seems that Julian and Ariadne are well-suited to each other and even share a scorching kiss one day, but he needs to get over his fear of being inferior to her. Quick read and a fun set-up for a whole cast of siblings and cousins that will be featured in this series.

From dock worker to marquess...

Julian Watts believed he was illegitimate and grow up very poor. He and his mother struggled to survive and he became a dock worker at 15, At 27, he's both a dock worker and a night clerk and when his mother dies, he finds out he was legitimate and then he is suddenly a marquess as his father who never acknowledged him dies a day after his mother dies.

Eight months later, Julian meets his lovely, young neighbor Ariadne Worthington, daughter of a duke, sister to Val, a marquess. Ironically, Julian has a massive inferiority complex and its Ariadne Worthington that sends him her brother to help educate Julian on the ton. His inferiority complex leads him to push away the pretty Lady Ariadne (their whole family has Greek names).

This was a great start to a new dynasty of aristocratic cousins.

Not only was the kiss unexpected in this novel, but so was Julian's inheritance. I enjoyed this heartwarming romance where the new marquess and daughter of a Duke meet in a park as they both take time out to catch their breath. Julian is unsure of himself, but tenderhearted Ariadne persuades her brother to befriend him because he looks lost. With the complications surrounding the death of his parents, Julian is cautious about sprouting his origins, but with the help of Ariadne, her brother, and their cousin, he learns to navigate his way through London society. The novel comes to a sweet conclusion and both Julian and Ariadne find their needs met in a special way. What a delightfully different story of Ariadne and Julian. He is a poor dockworker who finds himself a Marquess and has NO idea what to do with it or how to survive the ton. Ariadne is a duke’s daughter with a heart of gold. Their first meet is cute and exasperating at the same time. Watching them grow closer and then be torn apart by feelings of inadequacy. Your emotions get involved quickly with sadness, confusion, doubt, love and loss. The twists and turns are small, but very important. Hope to see how Lia and Tia take on the ton, as they are adorable sisters and Val is one exceptional brother! Good story, great characters and a very comfy HEA.

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

This is the first book in a new series from one of my favourite authors. Obviously, it's a historical romance.  We are introduced to a new generation of cousins who are coming of age in the series.  The heroine in this book is the eldest of the girls, making her come out to society.  Luckily, her elder brother is only a few years older than her, so she can trust him to guide her.

Our hero has recently come into his title, discovering his birthright after his mother's death.  He has a lot to learn before entering the perilous world of high society.

A story filled with happiness and good people.  The characters are fabulous, and I'm sure I will love the rest of the series as much as this one.

Great fun.

You can’t fight instant connections………

This was a good friends to lovers book with a bit of perceived class difference. Julian and Ariadne were destined to be together. The relationship started with witty banter and straightforward honesty. Then became this friendship that showed compassion and assistance. The characters were well developed, a,d I loved the relationship that Julian formed with his friends. After a misguided attempt to lead separate lives, Ariadne took a risk to get her HEA. I felt the love between this couple and I was rooting for them the whole time. This was a sweet love story with no villains, a bit of light steam at the end, and a happy ending for all.

The first of an amazing series. I just loved this story. Julian moves from a poor hard working man into a highly regarded lord of the ton. Ariadne is set for her come out season and is a beauty. She meets Julian and sends her brother and cousin to help him assimilate. Sadly, Julian ignores her during every event. This is one series that you absolutely should start at book one because the series is going to be based on this family and cousins. You don't want to miss out on any of the relationships and personalities of these extremely well crafted characters. Unique, thoughtful, creative and powerful all rolled into one, not to put down story.

Alexa Aston never misses. Loved the premise, the rags to riches hero, the friendship and of course the romance between the mc's. At times, it can be a bit slow and has lots of names but seeing as it is a start of a new series, I think it has more to do with worldbuilding. Also loved the h more than the H. I think he took too long to truly acknowledge the fact that him and the heroine could really be together. Also, the FMC seemed more vocal and straightforward about her feelings conpared to him but still I liked how the story went and it's very swoony. Loved the ending. Can't wait for the next book, which I hope will be about the FMC's brother or cousin who are also the MMC's best friends.

From the streets to Mayfair

Julian worked during the day on the docks and at night as a clerk to a solicitor trying to feed both himself and his Mother. When his Mother died, he found a marriage certificate and discovered he was the son of a Marques. He moved to a townhouse on Mayfair and realized he had no idea how to behave or even dress in order to take his place in Society. His townhouse was across from a family whose daughter was making her come out and a son who took an instant liking to Julian. This family, and the daughter, Ariadne take a very important role in his life. Alexa Aston writes a story that will warm your heart.

A Kiss will change everything. She is expected to get only the best. He just want to survive the season. What they find together will change everything. But are they strong enough to act on it?
Alexa Aston has a history of creating historical that are memorable. This book is no different. She has started her new series of without a hitch. Of course there are hitches in the book but I won't tell you what they are. Once again wonderful book. Well worth the read.

Ariadne was such a captivating character, with her unique charm that effortlessly draws you in. Her bond with her brother was one of the highlights for me—such a genuine and touching connection. Julian, however, was a bit of a mixed bag. While it was understandable for him to let go of Ariadne, I wasn’t sure about his sudden interest in someone else. The whole back-and-forth of him struggling with insecurities got old quickly, especially for a marquess. It felt a bit repetitive at times.

The writing was strong, and the pacing kept things moving without feeling rushed. Overall, a decent read that I enjoyed, but Julian’s character just didn’t work for me as much as I’d hoped. That's why I'm giving it 3 ⭐.

This is a fun, entertaining read. Julian and Ariadne are interesting, intriguing, complex, strong, caring, wounded, entertaining characters. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. These two are fun to spend time with. I enjoyed the family aspects of the story and what it brought to the characters and the plot. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.

Alexa can write a story. They are interesting, full of emotions (the prologue), and the characters are so sweet. How could you not love Julian. He is not the most savvy but he is a darling. Ariadne is someone I admire for taking poverty seriously which is relevant in this day and age. Loved that both Julian and Ariadne were on the same page. This lovely story is just the beginning of this family series (a favorite of mine).

The standout character for me besides Val is Con. I bet he is a scoundrel that needs a woman to bring him to his knees.

Ariadne is the oldest daughter and is about to make her come out. Julian has recently gotten a title after never knowing who his father was and growing up impoverished.
These two were cute together. Ariadne, along with her brother and his friend show Julian the way of high society. They have great chemistry and both have the desire to do good. I look forward to the rest of the series. Hopefully Julian's steward Ross will get a story too.
