Hot Mic, Cold Ice

Rate this book
In the high-stakes world of professional hockey, there's no margin for error—or room for emotions. Elliot St. Germain, the Red Wolves' star goalie, is always laser-focused on the game. No distractions. No weaknesses. Until a beautiful, infuriating new rinkside reporter stumbles into his life and threatens to destroy everything he’s worked for. Instead of his game being on fire, on the verge of hockey greatness, the reporter ignites something far more dangerous—an intense attraction that threatens to unravel them both.

Ziggy Blackwater never intended to end up where she is, as a hockey reporter, instead of living her dream. Determined to make the most of the following year, Ziggy, who knows nothing about sports, vows to be the best that she can be so that when the time comes, she can climb to the top where she belongs as a news anchor. What she never intended to do is mix business with pleasure—especially when that pleasure is a cocky, sinfully attractive star goalie.

HOT MIC, COLD ICE – A steamy, ‘unputdownable’ hockey romance where fire meets ice, and the heat off the ice is as intense as what happens on it. No one comes out unscathed.

There were things that were good and things that I thought could be made better for the second book in the series. Let’s start with the good stuff.

First off, this was a true enemies to lovers book. Elliot and Ziggy hated each other at the beginning and they ended falling for each other over the course of the season. Our FMC, Ziggy, was headstrong and determined to make something of her career and achieve the most that she could. Our MMC, Elliot, is dominant and determined as well. He’s debating on retiring and wants his team to win the Stanley Cup before he retires so he puts his heart and soul into his team and going all the way. I do have a thing for text bubbles within a book and there was a fair amount in this book that made my heart happy.

However, there were some struggles in this book. I love a book with good banter and dialogue and there wasn’t a ton in this book. There was a lot of prose. There were a couple of parts in the book that didn’t make sense to me. At the beginning when The Wolves were up 2-0 and someone from the other team shot the puck and Elliot blocked it. Then another shot is taken and made which would make the score 2-1. Wouldn’t there be cause for celebration because they won?? But it says in the book that he was defeated because they lost the game. The storyline doesn’t match up. This also happens in another section where he goes drinking and then wakes up with a headache on game day and goes jogging to prepare for the game that day. The next paragraph states “I roll out of bed….preparing for the exertion to come.” Storyline doesn’t match. He was already out of bed and jogging prior to the game starting. How can he roll out of bed again and do yoga?

Overall, I liked the book. I enjoy a good sports romance. There were just a few editing, storyline issues that I struggled with. Thank you Tela V. and Torchlit for allowing me to read the ARC of this book.

This book was good! I didn’t think it was going to be after the first couple chapters. Not because they weren’t interesting, but purely because the characters were so absolutely insufferable at first. I couldn’t stand both of them 😅 (which I learned later was totally intentional, just gotta stick with it)

BUT that got better once they begin to interact. We were just reallyyy going for the solid character growth in this book, and I do feel like they got it. By like 40% in, I loved Elliot and Ziggy, though I can’t get super behind that mustache of his haha 😂

I really did enjoy the actual hockey stuff in this book, especially because I feel like that stuff is written out in a lot of hockey romances. But this book actually had a lot of that, which was really neat! And Ziggy is based out of ATL, which I’m not far from, so that’s like a little taste of home. I thought it was hilarious how much she hates Atlanta at first, says “Hell on earth, downtown atlanta.” Which killed me because so true, girl 😗

Anyway, I did enjoy this book, and thank you to Tela V. and Torch Lit Ink for the ARC!! 💫

Hot Mic, Cold Ice is book 1 and features a hockey goalie x reporter. If you’re a lover of hockey romance books here’s another one to add to that never ending TBR list!
This was a 4 star read mainly because I struggled so bad at the beginning to get into it. But trust the process and stick with it. There’s a lot of character growth in this book which I very much enjoyed after how frustrating I found the characters at the beginning. This book has tons of moments that’ll make you laugh and is full of tension. Unlike so many hockey romance books, this one actually did touch on the actual hockey itself which was nice and refreshing. I still personally know nothing about the sport but it was still nice to read. I’m excited to see what comes next from Tela V! Thank you Tela V. And Torch Lit Ink for the ARC of this book!

Another AMAZING hockey romance! I can never get enough of them and this was just as good and spicy!

Elliot and Ziggy are not found of each other at all. She gets under her skin and gives him back all the sass he gives. Their banter is amazing!!!

Elliot is the grumpy hockey player that I always love to see. He just wants to play hockey and everyone else leave him alone.

Ziggy is new to the sports broadcast lifestyle and she is determined to rock it. Doesn’t matter if a sexy hockey player is determined to make it difficult for her.

This book made me laugh, got me frustrated a little, but I love a good HEA hockey romance. It was written so well and I love the characters. I can’t wait for another book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet enemies-to-lovers hockey romance! As a fan of hockey romances, I was hooked from the start. Ziggy, the strong and determined female lead, was a joy to read about. Her chemistry with Elliot, the sexy hockey player, was undeniable.

I loved how their initial tension and dislike for each other slowly turned into a deeper connection. Their banter was playful and full of chemistry, making their romance a delight to read.

Tela V did a great job of balancing the romance with the characters’ personal growth and development. I appreciated how the story explored their passions and careers, adding depth to the narrative. Overall, this was a fun and spicy read that left me eager for more!

ARC Review

To be honest, it was hard for me at the start to get into the story because of how self-absorbed both Ziggy and Elliot were, which I understood to be intentional to further show their character development. Things got better after the 35% mark and then I couldn’t put the book down from there.

Both their dedication to their respective careers and wanting to be the best were very relatable. There was real hostility between the two before it changed to respect and love. There was mutual pining between them as well and their chemistry was electrifying.

This was a sports reporter and hockey player romance. For me, it definitely took some getting used to. I will admit that I did not like either of the main characters at all for the first 25-35% and I probably would have DNF’d under other circumstances. However, I noticed they started to get on my nerves less and less and they actually turned out cute! They have instant chemistry and both have big goals and it’s a challenge to make it work but they do and it’s good.

I wish I had liked the beginning better because it did almost ruin the book for me, but I’m glad I stuck it out.

Thank you to Torch Lit Ink and the author for the ARC!

Yikes. The FMC and MMC are awful humans.

Every trope is attempted it seems.

I think this turned me off of hockey romances for a while. Jeez. I only liked the characters for maybe 10% of the book.

Give me more mustached MMCs. Give me more goalie MMCs. Better yet, give me more mustached goalie MMCs! I absolutely loved Elliot—his swagger, his POV, his everything. Honestly, I could read an entire sequel about him alone.

That being said, I kind of wished for another book because I didn’t want him to end up with Ziggy. I was rooting so hard for Elliot to wake up and realize she’s…frankly a terrible person and not worth his time. I haven’t disliked an FMC this much in a while. She’s clearly trying to be in her girl-boss era, but it was giving boss-b*tch in all the worst ways. If Ziggy were an actual sports reporter, pulling the questions she did on players and coaches, there’s no way she’d stick around long enough to get into Elliot’s pants.

The spice was fine—not groundbreaking but definitely enough to keep things interesting.

Bottom line: read it for Elliot. He’s worth it.

I always love reading a good hockey romance. As a huge hockey fan, it is one of my favorite genres. This book was a true enemies to lovers story with a hockey goalie whose entire life is the game and he has a laser focus on it, and a female sports reporter who has no knowledge of hockey. They are both competitive and cocky and it is easy to really dislike both of them at the beginning. Like any good enemies to lovers story, these two push each other and pick, pushing down their attraction to each other until it all boils to the surface. This is one of those stories where the MCs have tremendous growth that is only possible through their connection to one another. This was a fun read, and I found that even though it was on the longer side, it flowed nicely, and it did not take long to read at all. Even though the MCs were annoyingly awful at the beginning, the story was worth reading as they grew and became the people they should be.

I came to enjoy these two main characters. There is just something that I have to love about a grumpy, hockey obsessed goalie. He is super focused on his game and like most serious athletes, they have certain rituals that mean everything to them. Superstitions are so important to athletes and as sometime who has sat perfectly still in an uncomfortable position so that I made sure that my team won, I completely understand. Honestly, if my pre-game ritual was interrupted, I would not be very happy either. I think he was my favorite of the two because I completely understand where he was coming from. Ziggy is just as determined to succeed in her career field. But she has been made to be a hockey reporter with no knowledge of hockey. She doesn’t let that stop her. She is tough and determined to be the best possible. The fact that she quickly makes an enemy out of one of the athletes doesn’t help things. But the mutual attraction between the two plus the chemistry they have leads to an entertaining hockey romance.

This book was an enjoyable story that may start out with you getting irritated at the MCs, but it quickly becomes one with intense attraction and chemistry. There are some wonderful spicy times when the two MCs start to become physical and I love how the two realize their feelings and their relationship develops. One thing I really enjoyed was how good the hockey parts of the story were. So often hockey romances have little hockey to them. But this one had a great mix of hockey and romance. This was an enjoyable story that was worth the read.

Hot Mic, Cold Ice is a fiery enemies-to-lovers Ice Hockey romance that had me hooked! Ziggy and Elliot’s relationship starts with pure tension but evolves into something deeper, with slow-burn chemistry that kept me invested. I loved watching their story evolve. The banter shifts from harsh to playful as they get to know each other better, and the heat between them is undeniable.

Elliot, a hockey goalie, is impossible to resist, adding serious edge to their connection. The spice is off the charts, and by the end, I was fully invested in their journey. The book wraps up nicely while setting up the next in the series. I can’t wait to read more!

ARC review
⭐4/5
🌶️3.5/5

This book had a lot of hockey, banter, true sass and spice.

Both Elliot and Ziggy were two characters who were only focused on their careers and on being successful.
They only cared about work, and they didn’t have time for any distractions. And that’s why they both clashed, because they were a distraction to each other, and that turned into dislike, which in the end turned into an insane chemistry.

They agreed to a no strings attached relationship, it was supposed to be easy because they didn’t even live in the same city, but since he was a hockey player and she was a sports reporter, they traveled together a lot. Soon, they started to share more moments together, the texting and phone calls became a part of their routine and once they were on the road, they just couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

I have to admit, at first it was hard for me to connect with both of them. They were very self-centered, and I didn’t know how the author was going to make their relationship work.
Luckily, their relationship developed naturally, they weren’t just friends with benefits, they were there to support each other, and, in the end, they couldn’t deny their feelings.

I really enjoyed the ending, how they both figured out a way to be together without affecting their careers. I think they both took mature decisions, and it was nice to see them become a real couple.

That said, if you enjoy sports romance with great spice and lots of banter, then you should definitely give this book a try!

❄️ AVAILABLE NOW❄️

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned this year, it’s that I’m an absolute sucker for a hockey romance! 😍
they have quickly become one of my favorite sub genres!

✨this book was such a fun and entertaining read! When I first started reading, I didn’t know if I was gonna connect with the story as both of our main characters start out extremely cocky🤣 but once I got around 20% in I was totally invested in these characters and loved Ziggy and Elliot!!! 🥹🩵

✨Ziggy Blackwater has her career as a broadcast journalist take a bit of a surprising turn as she becomes a hockey reporter (with no hockey knowledge btw!) but that still doesn’t stop her from striving to be the best of the best. Although much to her dismay, she starts off her first day after taking over the lead interview position with an embarrassing bang!

✨Enter, Elliot St. Germain, star goalie for the Red Wolves’ hockey team! 🐺🏒 who is very determined, focused and committed to his pre game rituals. So let’s just say, he was not happy when that very ritual gets interrupted by our headstrong reporter. 🤭

🥅 this was such a fun and entertaining read and I really enjoyed the character development of these characters and watching their story unfold! Also, I always have to say a special thank you when a book includes a playlist! 😍 seeing a song by Liam Payne included on said playlist for sure gave my heart a much needed warm hug. 🤍

🥅 huge thank you to the author and Torch Lit Ink for providing me with this wonderful ARC in exchange for my honest review! 🩷 Happy Release Day!!!

You can read all of my reviews at Nerd Girl Loves Books.

This is a fun, flirty, steamy contemporary hockey romance. The book started off a bit slow, but once the characters started to interact more it picked up. Ziggy starts a new job as an on-air hockey reporter, but she's never done it before. It starts off rocky, especially when hot-shot goalie Elliot humiliates her during her first sportscast. What starts off as animosity quickly turns to lust as the two secretly hook up. Both of their careers improve as they continue their clandestine affair, but things get complicated when real feelings start to creep in.

Even though the book is 408 pages, it's a quick and easy read. I loved that the author included a lot of on-ice content in the book, which is usually only referred to in passing in most hockey romance books. The couple have complicated lives and I enjoyed reading an adult hockey romance book in a sea of college hockey romance books. There are a lot of ups and downs to their relationship, and the insecurity and unwillingness to be vulnerable was a very realistic touch. Who hasn't been insecure in a relationship? The couple's text exchanges were so fun to read. I love those special touches in books.

I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from Torch Lit Ink. All opinions are my own.

I have never before been so thankful for a Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers game!!
This hockey romance is top tier!!!
I stayed up all night reading this spicy five star read! I devoured it! As it should be...
Both main characters do everything in their power to be successful. They are competitive, goal oriented, driven and unstoppable forces. The tension and frustration between them is the perfect storm that builds into something passionate. Their nicknames for each other are down right adorable. And don't even get me started on his contact name in her phone.
I really enjoyed watching how the characters pushed each other to be better and complimented the other person. The balance this book has is amazing. The spice is off the charts!! My mouth dropped open quite a few times. I found myself says things like "oh no he didn't" and "okay that's pretty impressive".
I feel in love with the main characters and started rooting for them. I don't want to give out spoilers...so pick up this book and read it already.
In all seriousness thank you to both the author and torchlitink for letting me read this amazing book before it was released into the wild. I can't wait for book two!

Spice: 4/5

Ziggy’s confidence and unapologetic personality are the highlights of this book, making her both admirable and relatable as the story unfolds. While she may come off as a diva with her designer clothes, her insecurities are revealed in a way that deepens her character. On the other hand, Elliot starts off as an unlikable jerk, but his growth throughout the story made him a character I ended up enjoying. Their playful banter, particularly the “Barnacle” nickname (both in English & French), added plenty of fun moments. I would have loved to see more of Ziggy’s friendship with Rachel, while not seeing any of Ziggy’s ex-boyfriend. His appearance felt unnecessary and left me a little confused as I, personally, didn’t feel like it added to Elliot and Ziggy’s story. Lastly, while I wished for more hockey content, the bits included were well done, adding authenticity for fans of the genre and the sport! Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to meeting the other members of the Red Wolves (looking at you Oren and Ford!)!

I really enjoyed this sweet enemies to lovers hockey romance. I’m a sucker for hockey romance so when the opportunity came to get this arc I couldn’t say no. Ziggy was a strong FMC. She knew what she wanted out of her career and she wasn’t going to stop for anyone to get where she wanted to be. Elliot is a sexy hockey player who has one goal in mind and that’s to be the best at his game. When they first meet they totally hate one another but that tension brings them to something so much more. I loved how they brought out the best in one another and even though their relationship was a secret, they were able to teach each other things that they could bring into their professional careers as well. I wish there was a little more of their on screen bonding. I felt like a lot of the conversations that need to be had to form a bond was brushed over and just summarized. All in all this was a great read. It was fun & spicy and gave me all the feels!

Ziggy and Elliot's story was good! You'll want to pick this one up if you're looking for a dramatic, true enemies to lovers story.

Tropes:
Enemies to Lovers
Hockey x Media
Secret/Forbidden Romance
He Falls First

Ziggy and Elliot HATE each other. Ziggy is trying to do her job, Elliot is getting distracted by her, and things are not good for either one of them. Eventually, Elliot decides they need to get it out of their system so he can focus again. He's superstitious, and when the team wins after their arrangement, he decides to offer up a deal to her to help keep his game up...

I did like once things started to calm down between them and they started to fall for each other. I really enjoyed their relationship development and the way things ended up concluding. It was a pleasant surprise, and not the typical way hockey romances end. I would say this is at 3.5 stars for me, because their enemies to lovers at the beginning was incredibly extreme, and I felt like it was really immature for how old they both were. It was just a little much for me. I could definitely see others really enjoying the drama of it, though.

A steamy, hockey romance where fire and ice clash. Elliot is a hockey player on top of his game. His team finally has a chance to make the championship & this goalie will stop at nothing to get to the Stanley Cup. Ziggy had everything she ever wanted in NYC until her boyfriend moved her to Atlanta. Once in Atlanta he dumps her & now she must start over as a sports reporter, not one of her strengths. Disaster strikes when Ziggy & Elliot meet in the locker room. Nothing goes right for either of them which creates such animosity between them. Once they realize they are each other’s deepest desires, the sparks fly between these two.

Hot & steamy, these two will make your toes curl. Ziggy and Elliot’s connection is electric. I didn’t want to put this book down.

It was an interesting story; it was a slow start for me, but it picked up, and I'm glad I kept going. Elliott is the grumpy hockey player, who just wants to play hockey. Ziggy is the new sportscaster and she is determined to make this gig work.

We have an enemies to lovers situation with plenty of sass. The fact that both the characters are career driven and not too fond of each other created a tension and distraction that the reader could feel. The slow burn to dislike becomes a no strings thing. The chemistry and the spice, sizzling!
Will they figure this out, or make a mess of their careers?

I enjoyed the story, and look forward to meeting more Red Wolves players.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Hot Mic, Cold Ice was a first read from this author for me. I love me some hockey romance books and this was definitely an enjoyable read.

Elliot is the Red Wolves star goalies who doesn't have time for any distractions. Then the new ringside reporter pops up and his no emotions attitude turns into a whole lot more. Ziggy did not think she would be a hockey reporter, but here she is. Now she is determined to make the most of it to climb her way to becoming a news anchor, one interview at a time. These two start to mix business with pleasure and that always ends up in a mess.

Tela V. did a great job of creating this book. I liked how this was a cute romcom vibe with a little spice.

I tried to get invested and engaged with the book, but after about 20% the main characters were just not doing it for me. They were written in a way that came off as aggressively obnoxious in their need to be perfect, right, and the best and it was more grating than enjoyable. There is a scene with the locker room around this point in the book that didn't make a whole lot of sense and just added to my dislike of the characters. Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me even though I gave it my best shot to enjoy the characters.

I received an eARC of this book, but the review is entirely my own.

This was an amazing enemies to lovers hockey romance. I absolutely how from the beginning Ziggy and Elliot did not get on. And the fact after meeting he called her a barnacle! I would have been so pissed. They had heated words every time Ziggy interviewed him, and it was kinda hot. Elliot definitely fell first and he was as not happy about that at all, but being with her helped him clear his head and focus on the game. The spice between these two was so good, it was if they couldn’t help it. And ladies he is pierced!!! Yummy! I really enjoyed watching this super secret hook ups slowly turn in more for both of them.

Ya'll better get your fan ready because this was S.T.E.A.M.Y!

I dove into this so quickly because Ziggy was so relatable (I mean minus the crap boyfriend, single life am I right?) with her goal to just get on her feet and go back to an area she loves. Elliot was that strong stoic guy that was so into his role on his team that when the opening chapter has him being the typical weird goalie I didn't even question it. I went in all the way and was like yep I'm here for it.

In this he falls first, sports romance, and enemies to more, you get everything you could ever want and its just such a good quick read. You won't be disappointed.

This was...not for me. The main characters were very unlikeable with few redeeming qualities, which really put me off. Maybe that was the author's intent, but this book wasn't for me unfortunately. I also noticed that a lot of phrases used to talk about hockey were constantly repeated throughout the book. Coming from a girl who knows her hockey, there's only so much you can go over in interviews and a podcast just about hockey. But since the entirety of the plot revolved around it, the whole thing seemed really repetitive. I will say the spice is spicin'! So if you're reading just for that, give it a go lol.

Thank you to the author and TorchLit Ink for my copy to review.

If you want fun & spicy that gives you all the feels this book is for you! I’m an absolute sucker for hockey romance. I really loved this sweet enemies to lovers hockey romance!! Ziggy knew what she wanted out of her career and she wasn’t going to stop for anyone to get where she wanted to be. Ziggy is an amazingly strong FMC. Elliot is the swoon worthy hockey player who has one goal in mind to be the best. The enemies to lovers aspect of this book is definitely my favorite thing about this book and eventually that tension brings them to something so much more. I loved how they brought out the best in each other. This was a great read. I can’t wait to read more books from Tela V. Thank you Tela V and Torch Lit Ink for the opportunity to read this amazing book.

🏒Hot Mic, Cold Ice ARC Review 🎤

Enemies to lovers hockey goodness!!! This book is full of banter, true sass and the best kind of spice. A feisty strong FMC and a stubborn MMC make for some really fun times. This was a quick read, not much in depth character or relationship development on the page but i wont deny any hockey spice fun! I really did enjoy how even with their initial dislike and borderline hate for one another, Ziggy and Elliot still helped the other out with their careers, their ambition stranger than the dislike which you know turned into some hot spice and eventual love!
