New 11th Edition contains many updated techniques, scripts, and tools!
It is time to look at OSINT in a different way. For many years, and within previous editions of this book, we have relied on external resources to supply our search tools, virtual environments, and investigation techniques. We have seen this protocol fail us when services shut down, websites disappear, and custom resources are dismantled due to outside pressures. This book aims to correct our dilemma. We will take control of our investigative resources and become self-reliant. There will be no more need for online search tools; we will make and host our own locally. We will no longer seek pre-built virtual machines; we will create and configure our own. This book puts the power back in your hands. The new OSINT professional must be self-sustaining and possess their own tools and resources. You will become a more proficient subject matter expert who will be armed with the knowledge and readiness to articulate the sources of your findings. This new 11th edition contains hundreds of pages which have been updated to keep your OSINT investigative methods fresh. It also includes new online and offline search tools and a new Debian Linux OSINT virtual machine. Brand-new search methods for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and others ensure you have the latest techniques within your online investigation arsenal. Entire sections are devoted to Breach Data, Methodology, Workflow, Documentation, and Ethics, which provides a clear game plan for your next active investigation. All digital files are included via download. Today, we start over. Digital PDF available on the IntelTechniques website.
I haven’t read all of it and I don’t plan to. But this is… wow. The tools in here work shockingly well. I won’t look at grocery store coupons the same way again!! 🙀
PACKED TO THE BRIM with highly useful technical information that will be very much 'time specific' and outdated quickly - so make sure you get the latest version!
I dipped into sections of this book that were particularly useful to me at the time, and mostly used this book to build a more secure and private Firefox setup with numerous plugins and settings offered.
I don't actually intend to work in OSINT, or even take it up as a 'hobby', but the techniques and database sites mentioned are quite scary in their comprehensiveness.
You will likely need a good technical background and good understanding of Linux to get the most from this book, and actually use and implement the cutting edge tools that are metioned.
The book is extremely good value, being a massive volume that is meticiously kept up to date. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who spends a lot of time online - it is so eye-opening what is freely available to stalk/trace/track YOUR private information and private behaviour online. And how easy it is!
you can tell that bazzell has a very particular use case in mind that dovetails with his other works about equipping people with a sense of privacy. in terms of OSINT techniques the text feels very introductory, however if you are someone who is trying to disappear their identity online it would be a good book to read.
This review is for the 2024 edition of Bazzell’s book, which continues to be a standard bearer in OSINT search and OPSEC. If you’re new to OSINT or looking to brush up on your techniques, this is where to go.
It was more readable than I expected and it gave me many suggestions that have improved my computer savviness and improved the security of my digital devices.
