Το σοκ που προκάλεσε η αποτρόπαιη επίθεση της Χαμάς στις 7 Οκτωβρίου 2023 δεν πρέπει να μας κάνει να αποσιωπήσουμε την εγκατάλειψη ενός κομματιού της ανθρωπότητας, την αποδοχή, από μεγάλη μερίδα πολιτικών και διανοουμένων, της καταστροφής της Γάζας και του σφαγιασμού του πληθυσμού της, και τους διωγμούς κατά των κατοίκων της Δυτικής Όχθης, γεγονότα που θα αφήσουν ανεξίτηλο το ίχνος τους στη μνήμη των κατοίκων που φέρουν το βάρος αυτής της αποδοχής.

Ούτε πρέπει να ξεχάσουμε τον στιγματισμό και την καταδίκη όλων εκείνων, φοιτητριών και φοιτητών, Εβραίων και μη, στις ΗΠΑ, στη Γαλλία και αλλού στον κόσμο, που, απορρίπτοντας κάθε μορφή αντισημιτισμού, τόλμησαν να υψώσουν τη φωνή τους για να υπερασπιστούν τα δικαιώματα των Παλαιστινίων, το δικαίωμά τους στη ζωή και σε μια ζωή με αξιοπρέπεια, το δικαίωμά τους σε μια δίκαιη και βιώσιμη ειρήνη, και τούτο παρά τις καταγγελίες από τα ιδρύματά τους, τις επιθέσεις από τους κυβερνώντες τους, την παραπληροφόρηση από τα ΜΜΕ και την αστυνομική και δικαστική καταστολή. Με το πέρασμα του χρόνου, θα αναγνωριστούν ως δίκαιοι που, παρά τις απειλές σε βάρος τους, πρόταξαν τις αρχές της ανθρωπιάς. Παράλληλα με την καταδίκη των ολέθριων χτυπημάτων της Χαμάς, που πυροδότησαν την ισραηλινή επίθεση, θα πρέπει να αναφερθούμε στις επί σειρά δεκαετιών πράξεις καταπίεσης, βίας και ταπείνωσης που προηγήθηκαν εις βάρος των Παλαιστινίων. Δεν πρέπει να αποδεχθούμε τη συντριβή ενός λαού και τη διαγραφή της μνήμης του, ούτε την αντιστροφή της έννοιας των λέξεων και των αξιών που θέτουν σε δοκιμασία την πολιτική σκέψη και την ηθική κρίση. Το ανά χείρας βιβλίο καταγράφει και αναλύει πώς η συναίνεση στον αφανισμό της Γάζας, πώς η ηθική παραίτηση των πολιτικών και των διανοουμένων, προκάλεσε μια τεράστια πληγή στην ηθική τάξη του κόσμου.

Τι είναι αυτό που κάνει πολιτικούς ιθύνοντες και προσωπικότητες της διανόησης των κυριότερων δυτικών χωρών, με ελάχιστες εξαιρέσεις, όπως η Ισπανία, να θεωρούν αποδεκτές τη στατιστική πραγματικότητα ότι οι ζωές των άμαχων Παλαιστινίων αξίζουν πολλές εκατοντάδες φορές λιγότερο από τις ζωές των άμαχων Ισραηλινών και τη θέση ότι ο θάνατος των πρώτων πρέπει να τιμάται λιγότερο απ’ ό,τι ο θάνατος των δεύτερων· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει το αίτημα για άμεση κατάπαυση του πυρός, ώστε να σταματήσει η σφαγή των παιδιών, αφού πάνω από δώδεκα χιλιάδες έχουν ήδη σκοτωθεί και άλλα τόσα έχουν καεί, ακρωτηριαστεί ή τραυματιστεί, να καταγγέλλεται ως αντισημιτική ενέργεια· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει να απαγορεύονται οι διαδηλώσεις και οι συγκεντρώσεις που ζητούν μια δίκαιη ειρήνη και να διώκονται οι άνθρωποι που μιλούν για την ιστορία της περιοχής· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει τα περισσότερα μεγάλα δυτικά ΜΜΕ να αναπαράγουν με τρόπο σχεδόν αυτόματο την εκδοχή των γεγονότων που δίνει το στρατόπεδο των δυνάμεων κατοχής, χωρίς ανεξάρτητη επαλήθευση, ενώ εκφράζουν ανελλιπώς αμφιβολίες για την εκδοχή των γεγονότων έτσι όπως την παρουσιάζουν οι κατεχόμενοι· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει τις δημόσιες εξουσίες, τα επιστημονικά ιδρύματα και τις πανεπιστημιακές αρχές να καταπνίγουν τις φωνές που ζητούν την εφαρμογή του διεθνούς δικαίου του πολέμου και του διεθνούς ανθρωπιστικού δικαίου, ενώ δίνουν απλόχερα βήμα στις φωνές που το χλευάζουν· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει την κριτική σε μια κυβέρνηση αποτελούμενη από ακροδεξιούς υπουργούς, σε μια κυβέρνηση που διατυπώνει έναν λόγο απανθρωποποίησης ενός λαού του οποίου αρνείται έως και την ύπαρξη, να εξομοιώνεται με υποκίνηση μίσους· τι είναι αυτό που κάνει τόσες και τόσους που θα μπορούσαν να μιλήσουν, ή και να αντιταχθούν ακόμα, να αποστρέφουν το βλέμμα από την εξολόθρευση μιας περιοχής, της ιστορίας της, των μνημείων της, των νοσοκομείων της, των σχολείων της, των κατοικιών της, των υποδομών της, των δρόμων της και των κατοίκων της, και πολλούς μάλιστα να ενθαρρύνουν τη συνέχισή της. Είναι συγκλονιστικά όσα γράφει ο Fassin σε αυτή την βαθιά και πολύπλευρη μελέτη για την γενοκτονία της Γάζας. Πέρα από την απόλυτα διαυγή, ψύχραιμη και επιστημονικά τεκμηριωμένη καταγραφή όλων των κρίσιμων γεγονότων, των αντίκτυπων αυτών, τις παγκόσμιες αντιδράσεις και τον τρόπο παρουσίασης από τα μμε, η κορύφωση της μελέτης βρίσκεται στα δύο τελευταία κεφάλαια όπου δίνονται πειστικές απαντήσεις για το πιο μεγάλο και δραματικό ερώτημα που αιωρείται πάνω από όλη την Δύση. Γιατί υπάρχει αυτή η σε τόσο μεγάλο βαθμό συναίνεση στον αφανισμό ενός ολόκληρου λαού;

This is a superb book that we all should read.

96 pages of carefully researched thoughts and observations supported by 26 pages of reference notes that show how history will record the support of nations in the destruction of Gaza.

It's the same with the so-called mainstream media who are as complicit as those nations in their support of the destruction of Gaza. The book also provides a great list of independent media who provided information in a neutral tone free from the language of the Israeli government. This independent media also allowed Palestinian voices to be heard, provided analyses independent of Western public authorities, and made enquiries into 'facts' which the mainstream media did not question.

Charles de Gaulle back when he was General in 1967, explained Israel’s immediate colonial designs then: that Israel “is now organizing occupation on the territory it has seized. This cannot proceed without oppression, repression and expulsion, and without the emergence of resistance to it, which in turn it categorizes as terrorism.” The Dahiya Doctrine, is Israel’s chosen mode of asymmetrical warfare – think “one thousand eyes for an eye” – the opposite of what Jesus or the Golden Rule would say. We can see the Doctrine in action well before October 7th: kill one of ours and we’ll kill many of yours - in 2008 during Operation Cast Lead, 318 children were killed in Gaza but none in Israel. In 2014 Operation Protective Edge, 551 children were killed in Gaza and 1 killed in Israel. In fact, “the mortality rate for children is 1,850 times higher for Palestinians (than Israelis - p.57).” Combating “terrorism” a.k.a. resistance by committing terrorism? Rogue States these days have a nice trick: they brand their own terrorism as counter-terrorism, so only those who resist your illegal use of force are the terrorists. It’s good to be King! Lev Luis Grinberg of the Israeli Sociological Society said, “Palestinian resistance is in a catch; when it uses violence it is oppressed, and when it uses diplomatic negotiations, it is ignored.”

“Language is damaged when demands to stop killing civilians are ‘antisemitic’, (and) when an army that dehumanizes its enemies is ‘moral’.” “Thinking is suffocated when debates are prevented, lectures are banned and exhibitions cancelled, when the police enter institutions of higher education and prosecutors are imposed to ensure orthodoxy.” A poll in France in 2021 found that ant-Muslim racism was reported twice as much as antisemitism (p.84). Did you notice that the “obliteration of Gaza” requires the “consent of Western countries”? Explain this: the “Ukrainian exiles fleeing the Russian invasion, who were generously welcomed, and the Afghan exiles fleeing Taliban repression, who were brutalized at the Greek, Croatian and Hungarian borders.” As of 2024, since 1946 the US has given Israel $310 billion – today we US taxpayers give Israel 71% of its foreign aid. Hey, be realistic - genocides don’t just pay for themselves! If our elected officials followed our US laws (the Leahy Law) we couldn’t give Israel ANY military aid because it obviously is committing “flagrant human rights violations.” Luckily for fans of ethnic cleansing & settler-colonialism, the first concern of our elected officials is getting reelected – not moral quibbling.

Pause to reflect: During WWII, the German people sucked up to Nazism, the French people under Vichy immediately sucked up to Nazism – they all actively collaborated with Nazism. Now fast forward to today: The German and French governments are STILL sucking up to Fascism, as if in a contest today to see which former center of fascism could be more obsequious and servile to fascist trainee Israel. The President of Namibia pointed out in 2021 when Germany finally acknowledged its 1904 genocide in Namibia, Germany’s double standard with “atonement for the genocide in Namibia, while supporting the equivalent of genocide in Gaza.” That of course was before October 7th. “A favorable image of Israel declined by more than 18% on average in the 43 largest countries on the planet between September and December 2023.”

“It has been documented by Israeli journalists and a Palestinian organization that it was the IDF who used Palestinian civilians, including children, as human shields, sending them to search tunnels and buildings where they suspected that bombs may be hidden and forcing them to walk in front of the tanks in the street to avoid being attacked (p.40)”. Journalist Hanin Majadhi says, “in the past six months, the number of prisoners who have died in Israeli torture camps is four times greater than the number of prisoners who died in Guantanamo over twenty years.” Hanin knows of prisoners whose hands and feet were amputated because of gangrene caused by handcuffs. Quick – we need a Zionist who can spin that into the sacred Jewish values of Tikkun Olam in action! I have Facebook friends who once a month post how it’s SO scary to be Jewish outside of Israel right now, meanwhile, this book says, “in France “Islamophobic acts multiplied threefold in the fourth quarter of 2023 (p.55).” All this comes down to “one life being worth less than another.”

After October 7th, a memorandum was sent to New York Times journalists to not use the words “genocide”, “ethnic cleansing”, “refugee camps” and “occupied territories”, or even Palestine – and you shouldn’t use “slaughter”, “massacre” or “carnage” unless it was about October 7th (p.62). In Mainstream Media, the word slaughter was dutifully used 60 times more about dead Israelis than dead Palestinians. Zionists love to point at the original over-the-top Hamas Charter while knowing full well that it was replaced by a very reasonable Charter in 2016 – but these same Zionists do not want you to notice the obvious similarity between the first extreme Hamas Charter and the Likud 1977 Platform (from 11 years earlier) which said, “Between the Sea and the Jordan, there will only be Israeli sovereignty.” The origin of “from the river to the sea” for those who care, was back in the 60’s “when the PLO employed it with a view to a single state where Arabs, Jews, and Christians could live in peace, in accordance with the wish expressed by Yassar Arafat before the UN General Assembly (p.74).” Thus, the original purpose and meaning of “river to the sea” was NOT that of conquest (Likud 1977 Platform) but was that of peace. Imagine mainstream media telling you any of this.

The author’s thesis in this book is “in pursuing its project of the destruction of Gaza and its inhabitants, the Israeli government damages its country’s image a little more every day and, consequently, also the image of its allies.” Meanwhile all my rabid Zionist friends disagree, if you think ANY Israeli has ever in history knowingly committed a crime, you must get ALL your info from Hamas or you hate/despise ALL Jews (even though millions of Jews are clearly non-Zionist). In fact, I only first learned about the Israel/Palestine issue from my Jewish friends (like Noam Chomsky and Amy Goodman) and many Jewish authors. This was my 77th Israel/Palestine book I have reviewed just since October 7th, 2023, so I’m gaining a comic clarity about the always deflecting, propagandizing bullet-point Hasbara by those around me who won’t read one book unless recommended by Michael Rapport, Noa Tishby, or Alan Dershowitz. This was a good book by Didier and I’m glad to have read it.

Ο Φασέν μάς θυμίζει (ή μαθαίνει, ανάλογα την περίπτωση) ότι ο αφανισμός της Γάζας δεν ξεκίνησε τον Οκτώβρη του '23, αλλά μετράει πολλά, πολλά χρόνια, ενώ παρουσιάζει τις πρακτικές (πολύ εύστοχη η παρατήρηση για τα ΜΜΕ) και την ανοχή της Δύσης και καταρρίπτει ένα προς ένα τα επιχειρήματα που ακούμε και διαβάζουμε από όσες και όσους στηρίζουν ουσιαστικά τη γενοκτονία.

Λίγες σελίδες, μεγάλο συναισθηματικό βάρος.

Didier Fassin’s unpacking of the adoption by governments, media, commentators, and analysts across the minority and large parts of the majority world of Israel’s justification for its war on Gaza is sharp and incisive. He explores the principle of the right to self defence, highlighting the asymmetry of political and military power between Israel and the Palestinian people, the continuing occupation and colonial oppression of Palestine and its people by Israel, the suppression of dissident voices both in Israel and among those supportive states, and the military aid provided by states such as the USA, France, Germany, the UK and others. In doing so he exposes the moral vacuity that claim to self-defence, and the actions of those states sustaining the Israeli narrative.

Less a book than a pamphlet, this is far from the final word on the destruction of Gaza – but it is a vital intervention and one that should be engaged with, built on, and developed as the future of Gaza and Palestine more generally is in the public eye.

tato kniha je, ako sam autor v zavere poznamenal, archiv udalosti a diskurzov ci uz v palestine a izraeli alebo v so-called zapadnom svete v reakcii na 7. oktober. jej systematickost len utvrdzuje nepriestrelnu (20 stran zdrojov!) argumentaciu autora a casti populacie, ktora stoji na spravnej, ludskej strane historie.

A proper, succinct telling of how words and actions have failed to rouse us to action and what that means and why it matters to us all

To any who disagree or unsure of what’s happening in Gaza, this 100 pages will challenge you—to ask you, to please hear and hear well. For when all the words die and can no longer describe anything, and you wonder how and why we got here, wrestling with the abyss, it would be because we allowed language to speak no truths anymore and the only prayer would be a murmur for words again.

Most of this book just had me nodding along and saying "exACTly!!" but I probably would disagree with the idea that atonement for the Holocaust is the "ultimate key" to understanding Western complicity in the destruction in Gaza. I would guess that it has more to do with a long history of orientalism in which Muslims, as a larger, more threatening (in resources and power) and even probably more foreign group, got more of a share of demonization and objectification than even Jewish people did (and that is really saying something). But Didier Fassin clearly knows more about the situation than I do, so he's probably right.

Anyway, I think that this book is a great and even more digestible resource than Andreas Malm's "The Destruction of Palestine is the Destruction of the Earth" to educate people who are trying to turn a blind eye to the genocide of Palestinians, but that's not to say that I like this book more. (I honestly like Malm's book more.) They're both great!

je suis extrêmement contente d'avoir lu ce livre, qui m'a permis de m'éclairer les idées à propos de tout ce qu'on entend sur ce qu'il se passe actuellement à Gaza. Le contenu est lourd, difficile à accepter, mais le livre est très clair et bien écrit, la lecture reste donc facile et accessible à tous. Le dernier chapitre me laisse particulièrement touchée... Je souhaiterais recommander ce livre à absolument tout le monde.

This book is a testimony. A testimony of refusal of the narratives that surround us in a historical moment. Didier Fassin merely utters the obvious. How dehumanization, legitimization, justifications can occur in the domain of language.

As Western media outlets slowly and belatedly scramble to reframe their narratives around the devastation in Gaza, seemingly in an effort to evade long-overdue accusations of complicity, we are left with the enduring clarity of scholars like Didier Fassin, who have accurately documented the West’s role in enabling the continuation of this genocide.

The work of Didier Fassin, alongside that of numerous Palestinian and Jewish scholars, offers a rigorous account of the systematic distortion of truth and meaning. Their scholarship exposes the global complicity in normalising these misrepresentations and the ongoing efforts of erasing and rewriting history. Our current landscape sits in world in which the bombing of hospitals, the erasure of culture, and the killing of children are carried out by what is paradoxically branded ‘the most moral army in the world,’ all with impunity, whilst being glorified, sanctified and bankrolled by the West.

This work is required reading if you want to be better at arguing with people who say ‘it started on October 7th’

اختار الأنثروبولوجي الفرنسي والأستاذ في الكوليج دو فرانس ديدي فاسان عنوان “هزيمة غريبة: حول الموافقة على تحطيم غزّة” لكتابه الصادر حديثا عن حرب الإبادة المستمرّة في فلسطين منذ عمليّة طوفان الأقصى. يذكّرنا هذا الاختيار بكتاب آخر بنفس العنوان كتبهُ المؤرّخ مارك بلوك إبّان الحرب العالميّة الثانية، وإن كانت الهزيمة آنذاك سياسيّة في المقام الأوّل، فإنّ الهزيمة الحاليّة هي أخلاقيّة بامتياز كما يحاجج فاسان. فأن يتحوّل مجرّد المطالبة بوقف إطلاق النار أو إدانة استهداف الأطفال والمدنيين إلى سببٕ للاتّهام بمعاداة السامية أو التحريض على الكراهيّة لهو دليل على مدى التحيّز التام لإسرائيل والازدراء الكامل لقيمة حياة الفلسطينيّين.

فبالإضافة إلى الدعم العسكري والمالي الذي تحظى به إسرائيل من قبل حكومات الولايات المتحّدة وألمانيا وبريطانيا وفرنسا، فإنّ خطاب حكومات هذه الدول يتبنّى حدّ التطابق التصريحات الإسرائيلية والتي ينعتها فاسان ببلاغة الإنكار والقائمة على تأكيد حقّ إسرائيل في الدفاع عن نفسها، اتّهام حماس باتّخاذ المدنيّين كدروع بشرية، واعتبار الجيش الإسرائيلي الأكثر أخلاقيّة في العالم بتعلة إنذاره للمدنيين قبل القصف أو توجيههم لمناطق يدّعي أنّها آمنة.

لمحاولة فهم جذور الهزيمة التاريخيّة، يعود المؤلّف إلى حدث السابع من أكتوبر. فمع تأكيده على إدانة قتل المدنيين، يستعرض فاسان جملة الأكاذيب والفظاعات التي وقع اختلاقها من قبل الإسرائيليين لاستجلاب التعاطف الدولي ولخلق رأي عام داخلي وعالميّ مساند للهجمة المضادّة الإسرائيلية ويذكّر بأنّ إسرائيل هي من رفضت التعاون مع هيئة مستقلّة أمميّة للتحقيق في مزاعم الاغتصاب. أمّا في ما يخصّ مختلف ردود الأفعال على طوفان الأقصى، فقد اختصرها الكاتب ضمن فئتيْن رئيسيتيْن. ففي حين تمحو المجموعة الأولى كلّ تاريخ الاضطهاد الذي تعرّض له الفلسطينيون على مدى عقود من الاحتلال والتهجير والقتل والتمييز وتعتبر أن حادث السابع من أكتوبر هو بداية التاريخ وهو جريمة لاساميّة بل وتصل الجرأة ببعضهم لاعتباره جريمة إبادة ارتكبت ضدّ اليهود كيهود في محاولة لربطه بذكرى المحرقة النازية. أمّا المجموعة الثانية فترفض القفز على التاريخ وتصرّ على فهم السابع من أكتوبر في سياق عقود من الاحتلال و الإذلال والقهر الذي تعرّض له الفلسطينيّون. ينحاز فاسان في عرضه للمجموعة الثانية ويذكّر بالسياق الذي حدث فيه طوفان الأقصى (حصار غزّة، مسيرات العودة، الحصيلة الدامية من الضحايا الفلسطينيين في السنوات السابقة). كما يذكّر بأنّ تهمة الإرهاب أو شبهة القيام بجرائم حرب لا يمكن أن تلغي شرعيّة الحقّ في المقاومة، مذكّرا بجملة من التنظيمات التي كانت توصف بالإرهاب وتحوّلت إلى جزء من النخب الحاكمة في بلدانها مثل الحزب الجمهوري الإيرلندي والمؤتمر الوطني الإفريقي بل وحتّى حركة فتح وياسر عرفات من ناحية، وعصابة الإيرغون ومناحيم بيغن من ناحية أخرى.

ومع تتابع الجرائم الإسرائيلية في غزّة، آتّخذ النقاش حول مصطلح الإبادة الجماعيّة منحى جديدا مع لجوء جنوب إفريقيا إلى محكمة العدل الدوليّة نظرا لخرق إسرائيل اتفاقيّة منع الإبادة الجماعية والمعاقبة عليها. يقدّم فاسان عرضا مختصرًا لجملة الانتهاكات الإسرائيلية التي قامت عليها دعوى جنوب إفريقيا مثل القصف العشوائي على مناطق مدنية، استهداف الطواقم الصحيّة و الصحفيين وحتى المنظمات الأمميّة مثل الاونروا. كما يستعرض جملة من القرائن على توافر نيّة الإبادة من خلال خطابات المسؤولين الإسرائيليين المختلفة. وعلى رغم من تواتر الدلائل على همجية الحرب الإسرائلية، وعلى الرغم من إقرار محكمة العدل الدولية باحتمال حدوث إبادة جماعية في غزّة ومطالبتها إسرائيل بجملة من الإجراءات لتجنب خطر وقوعها، فإنّ الدول الغربية واصلت دعمها اللامحدود لإسرائيل وتبنّي سرديّتها من خلال الخلط بين معاداة الصهيونية ومعاداة الساميّة. وعلى نقيض ذلك، صار التضييق والمنع والإلغاء من نصيب كلّ من يتبنّى موقفا داعما لفلسطين ورافضا لحرب الإبادة، فشمل ذلك إلغاء محاضرات وطرد ورفض تسجيل طلاب وقمعا بوليسيا للمظاهرات وحملات سحل إعلاميّة للنشطاء والمفكرين الذين اتّخذوا مواقف علانية مثل غسان الحاج وغريتا تونبرغ ونانسي فرايزر وغيرهم. هذا التضييق بتعلّة مكافحة معاداة السامية يرافقه، كما يلاحظ فاسان، تجاهلٌ تامّ لحملات الإسلاموفوبيا وكراهيّة العرب والفلسطينيين في الغرب والتي كانت قاتلة في حالات معيّنة كما حدث في الولايات المتحدة.

بعد هذا العرض المفصّل ، يخلص المؤلّف إلى أنّ هذا التواطؤ المطلق مع السردية الإسرائيلية، هو نتيجة اللّامساوة والمفاضلة في قيمة الحياة بين الفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين. وهذا ما يبرز بوضوح في إحصائيات القتلى من المدنيين في كل الحروب الأخيرة على غزّة لجهة مقدار اللاتكافؤ بين الجانبين. وهذا ما يستمر حاليّا: فالطفل الفلسطيني على سبيل المثال أكثر عرضة 1850 مرّة للقتل من نظيره الإسرائيلي. وبعيدا عن هذه المقاربة الإحصائية التي تجعل من الفلسطينيين مجّرد أرقام، يشيد فاسان بمجموعات مثل “نحن لسنا أرقاما”‘ والتي تروي حيوات فلسطينيين قضت عليها آلة القتل الإسرائيلية. هذه الأنسنة للضحايا هي صورة أخرى من صور المقاومة لما سمّاه الكاتب بالتعاطف الانتقائيّ الذي يفرضه الخطاب الغربي رسميا وإعلاميا. ففي حين لا تحظى مجزرة النصيرات أو مجزرة الطحين بأكثر من بعض ثوان من التغطية الإعلامية، ترسم وسائل الإعلام عبر تقارير مطوّلة وجها انسانيّا للجنود أو للرهائن الإسرائيليين. ولا يقتصر اللاتكافؤ على مستوى الحياة، بل يشمل كذلك طقوس الدفن والحداد: ففي حين تُنظّم مراسم تشييع رسميّة وأهليّة للضحايا الإسرائيليين، تُدفن جثامين الفلسطينيين أو ما تبقّى منها من أشلاء، إن لم يحتجزها الجيش الإسرائيلي على عجل في مقابر جماعيّة.

ويلاحظ المؤلّف أنّ تصوير الفلسطينيين كمناصرين لحماس التي تُصوّر على أنها الشرّ المطلق، لا يأخذ في الاعتبار تعقيدات المشهد وتطوّرات حماس منذ ميثاق نشأتها في 1988 إلى حين تعديله في 2017 والذي قبلت فيه بحلّ الدولتين. في المقابل، لا تُسمع أي أصوات ناقدة لحزب الليكود والذي ما انفكّ منذ 1977 يؤكد رفض قيام دولة فلسطينية ويواصل دعمه للاستيطان وصولا إلى ضمان بسط سيادة إسرائيل على كامل فلسطين التاريخية من النهر إلى البحر. وتشكل حرب الإبادة هذه خطوة إضافية نحو هذا الهدف، إذ أن استهداف الجامعات مثلا هو استهداف للمستقبل في حين يشكّل التدمير المُمنهج للبنية التحتية نسفا لأيّ احتمال لحياة مستقبليّة كريمة في غزّة. ولا يغيب عن فاسان ملاحظة الصمت الذي يطبق على الأوساط الأكاديمية أمام هذا التدمير وغياب أي حركة تضامن وازنة مع الجامعات الفلسطينينة. بل على العكس من ذلك يقع التركيز على قمع التحركات الطلابية داخل الجامعات الغربية أو على ممارسة نوع من الوصاية الفكرية لصنصرة المواقف الرافضة للحرب.

بعد هذا العرض المفصّل لمختلف وجوه هذه الهزيمة الأخلاقية، يحاول فاسان فهم الأسباب الكامنة وراء هذا التواطؤ المطلق مع السياسات الإسرائيلية. فإن كان من بينها محاولة التكفير عن الذنب فيما يتعلق بالهولوكست و شراء نوع من الراحة الأخلاقية عبر دعم سليلي الضحايا مع التجاهل التامّ لأثرها المدمر على الفلسطينيين، فإنّ المصالح الجيوسياسية والاقتصادية للدول الغربية وبعض الدول العربية تجعل من تصفية القضية الفلسطينية أولويّة لها. كذلك، يشكّل اقتصاد الحرب فرصة مهمة للمجمع العسكري الصناعي الأمريكي. إذ أنّ كلّ المساعدات الأمريكية لإسرائيل مشروطة بضرورة شراء أسلحة أمريكية مما يجعلها أشبه بنوع من الدعم المقنّع للصناعات العسكرية الأمريكية. هذا فضلا عن أن حرب غزّة تشكّل فرصة لتجريب مختلف الأسلحة الجديدة والمبتكرة في الميدان من أجل تسويقها في مناطق الصراع الأخرى. وأخيرا، يضيف فاسان تنامي كراهيّة العرب والإسلاموفوبيا في الغرب كسبب رئيسي للتواطؤ مع إسرائيل في حربها. وهذا ما جعل اليمين المتطرف في أوروبا وهو تاريخيا معادٍ للسامية، ينضمّ بحماسة كبيرة لجوقة الداعمين التقليديين لإسرائيل.

ختاما، يمكن القول أن ديدي فاسان نجح في تقديم شهادة تاريخية قيّمة ترصد تفاصيل الهزيمة الأخلاقية التي شهدها العالم وبالأخص الغرب، والذي تخلّى عن كل خطاب حقوق الإنسان الكونية وقيمة المساواة ومبادئ القانون الإنساني الدولي، ليقف مساهما ومتواطئا في حرب إبادة جماعيّة تخاض مباشرة على القنوات التلفزية وعلى وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي في حدود ما يسمح به الرقيب.

Une remarquable archive des massacres commis par l'armée israélienne à Gaza depuis le 7 octobre, et surtout des réactions qu'ils ont engendrées à l'Ouest. Quoi qu'un poil manichéen par moments, cet essai apporte un éclairage bienvenu sur la défaite morale des sociétés occidentales devant les innombrables déclarations et actes génocidaires du gouvernement israélien dans les derniers mois.

Comparison of atrocities is fundamentally flawed, as the text states:

"These wars and massacres are indeed invoked by some to relativize the singularity of the obliteration of Gaza. They legitimately point to Congo and the Kivu, Sudan and Darfur, Ethiopia and Tigray, Turkey and the Kurds, Russia and the Ukrainians, Myanmar and the Rohingya, China and the Uighurs, and more. Each of these situations is tragic. Some have involved a greater number of victims than in Gaza. But none of these wars and none of these massacres have elicited such unwavering support from Western governments and so systematic a condemnation of any who denounce them, while the scale of the devastation and the intent to erase are beyond compare."

In reality, all of them have been largely ignored because they have always been ignored—by the West, by the media, and even by the very author of this text!
These atrocities were not only ignored by the West and Westerners but were also overlooked by the very people who suffer from them!

Let’s not go too far: everyone witnessed Syria and the crimes of Bashar al-Assad, yet they remained silent! It is geographically close to Gaza and Palestine, yet it was overlooked! We know nothing about Sudan! The very premise of comparing atrocities, as presented by the author, is a blatant and fundamental mistake.

Petit livre aussi simple que percutant et rassurant sur le fait qu'il existe encore des intellectuels engagés et vigilants face à la distortion volontaire du langage, à l'orientation des émotions et à la tentative forcenée d'uniformisation de la pensée qui sévissent de nos jours.
Alors que la notion de consentement est à l'ordre du jour dans beaucoup d'autres débats de notre société, elle est ici criante et, effectivement, doit être explorée plus avant afin de tenter de comprendre comment éviter la déshumanisation qui nous guette dès lors que comme dans tout processus préalable à un génocide, on déshumanise un groupe. Car oui: déhumaniser l'autre nous déhumanise, pour paraphraser Césaire, entre autres.
Didier Fassin ne fait pas non plus de politique ici; il rappelle des faits documentés et leur chronologie avec des chiffres qui font froid dans le dos. Enfin, même s'il se garde bien de se substituer aux enquêteurs de la Cour internationale de justice sur l'existence ou non d'un génocide, il nous montre que le premier des ingrédients d'un terreau fertile au nettoyage ethnique est la déshumanisation de l'autre. Ce qui est criant ici, c'est avec quelle ampleur, quelle efficacité il a été facile de faire les opinions publiques occidentales consentir à l'inimaginable. À mon sens, nous n'avons pas le choix que de regarder cette posture de nos sociétés en face si nous voulons nous battre pour conserver notre esprit critique et ne pas devenir des "mitläufer", surtout après tout ce que nous savons de ce que cela a produit lors du 2è conflit mondial - ironie du sort: le 27 janvier 2025 sonnait les 80 ans de la découverte "physique" d'Auschwitz-Birkenau par les soldats soviétiques.

Voulons-nous laisser les médias dominants et nos gouvernements acheter notre consentement à ce qu'il se passe à Gaza? C'est la question extrêmement perturbante que pose ce livre, qui se veut de rester une trace pour les générations à venir que tout le monde n'a pas, justement, consenti à cet écrasement, et cela, sans qu'il y ait une once d'antisémitisme dans ce refus de nier l'humanité de l'autre et de l'écraser.

I’d give it a 3.5 if I could. Good book overall, the only qualms I have with it is how the author delivers his expositions and how he posits ideas. And by ideas, I mean literal “ideas,” not factual information.

A good part of the book was obviously politically neutral (maybe arguably slightly left leaning, but that doesn’t matter much!), considering it’s obvious yet not explicitly implied deontological ethics. As western nations, if our governments cannot stand up for a people regardless of political interests, what does that say about our society and what does it say about who our government (arguably oligarchs) associate with?

The only issue I really had with this book was the latter chapter. Fassin begins to posit notions of how (to paraphrase) ‘far-right leaders ironically have ties with Israel.’ Firstly, I think that referring to populists as “far-right” is beyond silly and the equivalent of political name calling. Secondly, Fassin then posits that the ties with Israel despite the possessed antisemitism of certain leaders (ex. Orbán) is due to the power dynamics of Israel. He also posits that the mistreatment of Muslims in Europe is due to favouring Jewish people over them.

I find these beliefs obviously a political implication which is either arrogantly expressed with intentional ignorance or SORELY MISTAKEN takes. The latter idea expressed is one typically found among moderate political positions, especially those of the moderate conservative (neoliberal?neoconservative?) circle. I also find it disappointing how Fassin, instead of opting to get speculative, makes statements which obviously cannot hold up in his own “objective” perspective here.

Other than this, the book is good and conveys a simple yet true message: Palestinians are innocent victims of something they never asked to be part of, and Western nations and at times even their inhabitants hold almost no traces of pity for them, and those who do are systemically discriminated against and systematically eliminated from being able to be a “integrated” person in their society. They become dehumanized for supporting the dehumanized out of basic human compassion.

Das Buch analysiert das aktuelle Geschehen in Gaza als einen radikalen Bruch mit der humanistischen Tradition, deren klassischer Ausdruck sich bereits bei Terenz im Ideal der „Humanitas“ findet. Während der antike Dichter postulierte, dass einem Menschen nichts Menschliches fremd sein dürfe, dokumentiert dieses Buch eine regelrechte „historische Abdankung“ dieses Prinzips. Es geht nicht mehr allein um das passive Ignorieren fremden Leids, sondern um die aktive Zustimmung zur Zerstörung eines Teils der Menschheit. Der Autor versteht sein Buch als Archiv eines moralischen Versagens, in dem Empathie – der Kern des humanistischen Denkens – durch eine „Polizei des Denkens“, durch Sprachverdrehung und moralische Umkehr systematisch außer Kraft gesetzt wird. Damit stellt das Werk die schmerzhafte Frage, was vom humanistischen Erbe übrig bleibt, wenn das Leiden des „Anderen“ aus dem Kreis des gemeinsamen Menschseins ausgeschlossen wird.
Auf der Ebene des Kosmopolitismus diagnostiziert das Buch zugleich den Zusammenbruch einer globalen Verantwortungsgemeinschaft. Ein genuin weltbürgerlicher Geist setzt die Unteilbarkeit der Menschenrechte und die universelle Geltung moralischer Urteilskraft voraus; das hier beschriebene „Einverständnis zur Vernichtung“ markiert jedoch eine „seltsame Niederlage“ – in bewusster Anlehnung an Marc Blochs (1886 - 1944) L’Étrange Défaite – der intellektuellen und politischen Eliten weltweit. Indem das Werk die Unterdrückung abweichender Stimmen und die systematische Verzerrung der Sprache analysiert, legt es offen, wie ein selektiver Kosmopolitismus jene universellen Werte verrät, die er rhetorisch zu verteidigen vorgibt. Das Buch ist ein eindringliches Plädoyer für die Rückkehr zu einer politischen Intelligenz, die den Menschen nicht als bloßes Objekt geopolitischer Kalküle behandelt, sondern als Bürger einer gemeinsamen, unteilbaren Welt anerkennt.

Ένα βιβλίο που πρέπει να διαβαστεί με ανοιχτό μυαλο. Θα σε βοηθήσει να "μπεις στα παπούτσια" των Παλαιστινίων, να τους συνεσθανθείς και να πληροφορηθείς για κάποια από τα εγκλήματα που έχει διαπράξει ο Ισραηλινός στρατός. Είναι απαραίτητη η ύπαρξη 2 κρατών. Επίσης συμφωνώ με τον συγγραφέα για το ότι δεν είναι αντισημιτης οποίος κάνει κριτική στην πολιτική του Ισραήλ και ότι όποιος μιλάει για την ανάγκη κατάπαυσης του πυρός και την ανάγκη να προστατευτούν οι άμαχοι δεν σημαίνει ότι τάσσεται υπέρ της Χαμας.  Ωστόσο κάτι που δεν είδα από τον συγγραφέα είναι η πιο έντονη καταδίκη της Χαμάς και των εγκλημάτων που έχει διαπράξει ανά τα χρόνια, επίσης ,κατά αθώων αμάχων.

“Language is damaged when demands to stop killing civilians are ‘antisemitic,’ when an army that dehumanizes its enemies is ‘moral,’ when an enterprise of obliteration is a ‘riposte,’ when a military operation openly conducted against Palestinian civilians is the ‘Israel-Hamas war.’”

An incredibly informative read, especially if you’re interested in the way news media have allowed Israel’s bombardment of Gaza to go unchecked and unanalyzed. Worth mentioning and even harrowing that this assault has been so accelerated that this book feels almost dated despite being released not even a year ago.

Essentiel pour comprendre comment le 7 octobre a pu avoir lieu. Essentiel pour comprendre ce qui a poussé un groupe palestinien armé à un massacre et absolument essentiel pour les israeliens et juifs encore convaincu qu’ils mènent une guerre juste alors que celle ci n’est rien d’autre que le massacre d’une population à petit feu ( un genocide).

I’ve been struggling with how to reckon with the global community’s utter failure regarding Gaza; concepts that I naively took for granted like truth and justice seem to hold no weight and have been completely abandoned. This book confirms what we all feel: that the evidence for wrongdoing is overwhelming yet insufficient to stop the genocide in the face of money, power, and propaganda. The only solace I’ve been able to take from this, which the author elegantly puts into writing, is that one day some semblance of the truth will prevail, and history will remember this for what it was.

This is a 5/5 for the idea, but unfortunately, it is still a very western take on the situation. The title should have stated "how the WESTERN world failed to stop the destruction of Gaza." I guess the audience for this are European leftists who already believe in the ideas presented and want to feel validated. I'm not saying this as a critique, as I belong to that category of people. However, it must be acknowledged that this is not a text that will suddenly convince people.
