魔道祖师 [Mó Dào Zǔ Shī] #4

El gran maestro de la cultivación demoníaca, vol. 4

Rate this book

I feel somehow that I will carry Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji with me into the afterlife, so great my love is for them and every single iteration of this story.

Is it perfect? No. There are plot holes and the writing is sometimes extremely unpolished. But none of that matters to me. This story is truly special, and so is the love they share. I think it exists on an entirely different plane for me, one where any valid criticisms seem to fall away. I can only see the sweet, tragic story of the man who thanklessly sacrificed everything for those who spat in his face, and the one man who truly saw and believed in him, even at his darkest moments.

Thank goodness this volume ended on a romantic, light-hearted scene. Because the flashbacks with late-stage evil Wei Wuxian (who has my heart) had me GUTTED. 😫

—— 4.5✰ stars.

➼ Thinking about it this volume deserved more than a plain 4✰ stars, I was kind of angry at the ending jdhgkfjdhb.
➼ In this volume we can see puzzle pieces finally fitting, storylines that had been open in volume 1 now finally making sense, and of course all the wangxian scenes we deserved because good lord isn't Wei Wuxian dense lmao.
➼ Wangxian for the win💜

Here, have some stars!

What, I'm only allowed five? Hmph.

More of the past and its tragedies are revealed. Things get pretty grim. In the present-day storyline, we get a big surprise — followed by a HUGE surprise.

I did falter a bit during the dark timeline. I wanted to know! Very much! What had happened! But I'm such a wimp, dread slowed my reading momentum down. But when I regained it — well, I stayed up to almost 3AM this morning to finish. The fun times make it all worthwhile.

Wei Wuxian said, “That’s not the gift I’m going to give him.”

... Wen Ning was taken aback. “Then what gift did gongzi prepare?”

“Heaven’s secrets cannot be divulged,” Wei Wuxian said enigmatically.

“Oh,” Wen Ning said in reply.

And he did not ask again. Wei Wuxian held his tongue for a moment but then could hold it in no longer.

“Wen Ning, shouldn’t you keep pestering me for an answer out of burning curiosity? How can you just stop after a mere oh? Don’t you want to know what the gift is?!”

Amazing that this absolute chatterbox turns out to be someone who can really keep a secret. 😂 And now, onward to book 5!

I am still surprised after the many complaints and four volumes in 7seas still didn’t get a proper editor and proofreader because I still came upon rookie mistakes. I’m utterly bewildered.

Um, excuse me? Who gave this book the right to end like that? With Wei Wuxian hating himself for his feelings and the misunderstanding that Lan Wangji doesn’t feel the same (when he’s actually hopelessly, madly in love). There is way too much to unpack in this volume.

Why in the world did I have to strand myself at the Burial Mounds for all these years? he asked himself. Why must I be subjected to all this? Why did I have to go down this path in the first place? Why must I do this to myself? How does everyone else see me? What, exactly, have I gotten out of any of this? Am I crazy? Am I crazy? Am I crazy?!
If only he had never chosen this path to begin with.

Reading about Wei Wuxian’s time with the Wens on the Burial Mounds was both healing and heartbreaking. Seeing Wei Wuxian break after Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli’s deaths broke me into pieces.

Wen Ning was a weapon, but had he willingly volunteered for that position?
Could such a weak-willed, timid, stuttering person have taken any pleasure in killing so many people under Wei Wuxian's command?

Wen Ning, my beloved, deserves all the love in the world. I wanna wrap him in a blanket and keep him close.

Past Wei Wuxian realizing the consequences of his cultivation path and how it hurt other people? Made me wanna sleep on the highway tonight.

"What… what is your name?" Wen Ning asked him.
Lan Sizhui was slightly taken aback, then stood tall. “I am a junior of the Lan Clan of Gusu. My name is Lan Yuan."

AND LAN SIZHUI BEING LITTLE WEN YUAN! As soon as I realized it, my shrivelled up heart beat again. Brings a whole other side to Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian being his unofficial adoptive dads for real.

"Your golden core was never restored," Wen Ning said. "It was completely dissolved by Wen Zhuliu! The reason you thought it was restored was because my jiejie, Wen Qing—the best doctor of the Wen Clan of Qishan—cut Wei-gongzi's golden core from his body and used it to replace yours!"

Jaw dropped. Shocked. Flabbergasted.

He wasn't scared of falling. He had fallen many times over the years. But hitting the ground still hurt.
How wonderful it would be if there was someone there to catch him.

<3

And now to Wangxian. They basically spent the whole book pining, being protective boyfriends, and oblivious idiots. Wei Wuxian showing Lan Wangji around Lotus Pier was pure tooth-rotting fluff. Until Jiang Cheng had to let his homophobia show and ruin the cuteness.

That spicy scene at the end was a goddam jump-scare. And while I thought it’d be a step in the right direction… nope! It just caused misunderstandings and feelings of shame. Can they just be happy for once?

Still 5 stars of course, even if I’m bitter right now.

I feel lit aflame, actually. This volume activated too many different emotional responses in my brain and all my processing centers got overheated. There’s an electrical fire just eating away at my neurons now.

What’s got me the most mind-melty is thinking about Wen Ning’s unlife as a complex disability. MXTX takes so many moments to stop and point out when he wants to express an emotion but lacks the fine motor control in his face to do so, or wants to eat the food shared with him but can’t anymore. The first sentence he says when he’s a person again is “I want to cry really badly, but I can’t.” !!!? Sweet boy!!! Now I’m crying for you! There is something about the allegory of necromancy, of dying and Coming Back Wrong, that represents chronic illness like nothing else I’ve ever read. It makes the ‘you literally will never be able to get this body to work like a healthy person’s. you were not made for living. you technically should not exist.’ feelings so literal. Which all sounds really negative, probably, but it feels positive to be seen. Wen Ning means a lot to me and I love him.

And then there’s the Wei Wuxian of it all, the sort of anti-Pygmalion dynamic of a disabled man dragging a dead man back into disabled almost-life, the mess of the whole taking-Wen-Ning’s-agency-away-by-using-him-as-a-weapon thing. And Wen Ning being the magnum opus of the magical method Wei Wuxian invented to cope with a sacrifice the Wen siblings enabled him to make, a secret they alone kept with him. I couldn’t untangle that if I tried, but it felt important to name.

Because, speaking of disability representation and WWX-WN complexity, Wen Ning finally gives us the golden core reveal!!! And with that, we get to look back at Wei Wuxian’s ostracized path, his single-plank bridge into the dark, and appreciate it not only as a brave moral stand he made but as a response to inaccessibility. It’s a story that illustrates how societal condemnation for those who take the road less traveled by most profoundly affects marginalized people, people who cannot take the sunny, broad road because it was built to keep them out. Wei Wuxian, the disabled tragic hero of the past; Wei Wuxian, the disabled romantic lead growing towards healing in the present. MXTX has given me gifts of story immense beyond my wildest sick kid hopes, and I am clutching them so close to heart.

Anyway, I think the crux of this volume, and potentially the strongest point in the entire novel, is the contrast between the Yiling Laozu’s downfall and the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds. The heartbreak of everything that unfolds after the ambush at Qiongqi Path is so viscerally rendered—it felt like the deepest we’ve ever been submerged in Wei Wuxian’s stream of consciousness, each line of narration as he spirals beyond return brutally incisive. And, like, I swear I’m trying so hard not to be back on my non-linear timeline bullshit in this review, but the Second Siege is such a perfectly crafted counterweight to all of that, to the Massacre at Nightless City. Wei Wuxian’s hysterical resolve to prove the villain he’s painted as, Wen Qing’s warning about the public not believing him even if he cleverly proved his innocence, him killing thousands of cultivators with a horde of tiger-tally-controlled corpses. Each of these narrative elements is deftly and completely reversed in the Second Siege.

The ending did make me want to bite glass (intoxication as the perpetual catalyst for intimacy + no homo miscommunication = I beg for the sweet release of death). BUT when I got over the raw (effectively-evoked?) frustration, I did really appreciate it portraying the quintessential queer experience of not knowing where on the border between friendship and romance, in that country of Something More, your relationship lies. Thoughts and prayers for my gay uncles; may they develop communication skills asap.

Reread (BR with Teal and Rosa) Aug 2025:

Well, it happened. We found a plot hole that couldn't be easily explained, but I found a solution to it that works for me. Since it came at such a crucial point in the story, I couldn't not come up with a head canon for it.

We also discussed LWJ quite a bit, in particular for the last chapter and what was going through his mind after the fight in Lotus Pier and what was said there, and how that effected him for drunk shenanigans #3 and the unfortunate fallout from their . It's so rare to see the miscommunication trope used in a believable way, y'all, and WWX's various pranks in both his lives didn't help the situation at all. 😢

Reread (BR with Teal, Rosa, Elena and Moony) Oct 2023:

I'm glad we were able to verify that LWJ was indeed sober when

But in going over my various notes on the timeline of events, I realized I'm going to have to go through all of them all over again. Because either something is seriously off with the story, or I miscalculated when certain events took place. Thank goodness I still have all my Kindle notes, or that would have meant another reread, lol.

Reread review (BR with Teal) Aug 2023:

Between the end of the flashbacks and all the tea getting spilled, there wasn't much to laugh over in this one. Well, , but this one is the hardest volume to get through. Thankfully, we get more drunk Wangji, but even then - dudes, talk to each other while y'all are sober. It would clear up so much of this nonsense!

These do read so much better on reread and when you can read them all in one go. It is just one super long story after all. I'm having a lot more fun with them this time around. And not just because I'm watching a bunch of The Untamed crack videos on YouTube to help me get through these darker parts.

Original review March 2023:

Things are coming to a head and we're getting more answers. There's just one volume left, due out in early May, but it took my library three months to get this volume, so who knows when I'll be able to read that one. I am wishing now that I'd waited until all five volumes were available, but I really wasn't expecting to enjoy these as much as I am.

So a lot happens here. Once again, it opens in the past, with Wuxian on the outs with the clan that raised him. And no surprise, the other clans are getting fearful of Wuxian's powers and creating threats for themselves by making up reasons to go after him. It doesn't end well. Then we jump back to the present, where I had forgotten Wuxian and Wangji were in the middle of helping the kids out of a sticky situation, and that goes better than expected but it's also not without consequences. There were some revelations here that didn't quite seem to jive with what happened before though. Spoiler time!

Looking forward to the final volume! Despite the palm-facing, I do enjoy these impossible dorks.

I finished this book more than 2 days ago and I’m just coming here to rate and “review” it because I was too busy starting the next 5 minutes after I finished.
I’ve then read the first 38% of volume 5 (at which point the main story ends, the rest are short stories) the very same day and I’ve been happily immersed in this story since then, too busy to indulge myself to even consider moving on to the short stories, despite being very interested in reading more about these characters.

Do you need to know more about why I’m giving it 5 stars?

How about the number of my highlights? 138

Yes, you read that right.

I finished this volume 4 some days ago and went into volume 5 directly because REASONS... Now, I can't even write a proper review because I loved this story so much and I'm at loss about what to say. I've finished it but I can't stop thinking about this characters and world.
This story is full of revealed secrets and action and I'm going to need time to process it all. So, I'm going to reread everything now, maybe later I could write something coherent. Welcome to my new obssesion.

4.5 So much happened in this one I don’t know what to talk about. Might be my favorite one of the series so far. The ending caught me off guard though probably because I’m used to only having read tgcf from this author but 😭 The plot was so crazy in this one in both the flashbacks and the present, I gasped so loud at that revelation. And the angst… I cried a little when Wen Ning told everything to Jiang Cheng, also Lan Sizhui?? I’m devastated

Hello yes, bartender? Yes I’d like your strongest shit. On the rocks ASAP please!!! My heart nearly dropped into a million pieces. I got goosebumps and a snotty nose from this almost instantly… WHY DID IT HAVE TO END LIKE THAT?MY POOR BABY WEI AND HUANGUANG JUN( ✿˃̣̣̥᷄.⌓˂̣̣̥᷅ ) I WANNA HUG THEM DON’T YOU KNOW LAN WANGJI IS MADLY IN LOVE WITH YOU!!!????&@:@&/@/@:&/ YOU GUYS ARE MADLY IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER!!!! PLEASE SEE IT !!!!!!

All Wei Wuxian knows how to do is smile. Again, and again, and again. He smiles through it all even during his roughest ventures still managing to put others above himself. Despite his pain, despite his discomfort, despite the judgement that swallows him whole. Him and Lan Wangji are similar in that way. They are similar in more ways than one. They are one in temperament, they are one in wrongs and rights of the world, and definitely one in intelligence.

I love this novel so much because of all that they both went through to eventually find each other again without restraint or restrictions. They are both so complex within their compassion for one another and it’s what makes them all the more special and perfect for each other.

To make sure Wei Wuxian feels secure, loved, heard, cared for, and understood in this life Lan Wangji left no path untouched. Reading this you see Lan Wangji giving Wei Wuxian everything he has being so blinded by love that he would never say no. A love they’d both go to heaven and hell for. They have my heart always <3

“When the whole world feared him and flattered him, Lan Wangji scolded him right in his face. But when the whole world spurned him and loathed him, Lan Wangji stood by his side.”

Hold on one second *blows nose violently into hand full of tissues*

This book is brutal and reading it in Spanish was even worse, but at the same time it has some of my favourite moments.
There're some choices in the translation that I'm not too fond of and sometimes those take me out of the story. Overall it isn't bad, but I still think that, in general, some of the choices they made take out the subtext and a lot of nuances, which is really sad.
