The must-read LGBTQ+ novel of 2024.

Achingly tender, powerfully erotic, and disturbingly dark, INSIDE HER follows closeted Jess as she escapes an abusive fiancé to find love with a woman – only to have her newfound bliss shattered beyond repair. By simply existing as a woman, Jess is terrified of the world, especially after what happened on that day. The last thing she wants is to attract more attention to herself by coming out as queer. No, suppressing her desires and staying with her abusive fiancé seems like the safer choice. At least he can protect her from other men.
Enter Georgia, the woman of Jess’s dreams. When the spark between them escalates into an unexpected, all-consuming love, Jess risks everything to follow her heart, even if it means facing the dangers she’s spent a lifetime avoiding. If only she knew what was coming for her…

I had to DNF this one because, honestly, what on earth was this? There was no chemistry between the leads, no meaningful backstory, and no opportunity to truly connect with the characters. The narrative jumped from pages upon pages of abuse to extended, unrealistic sex scenes, making the story feel disjointed and shallow. It read more like a straight woman’s fantasy than a genuine romance or even good erotica.

Jess’s transition from escaping an abusive relationship to immediately having her first lesbian sexual experience felt incredibly rushed and poorly handled. There was no exploration of connection, guidance, or emotional depth—it just came across as odd and unrelatable. Unfortunately, this book fails both as a romance and as erotica.

This was…. something.

This reads like every bad bisexual trope combined. It was highly recommended to me, so I had high hopes, but between the unrealistic dialogue, forced twist, multiple time and plot jumps, and the clean ending, I just… 🥲

This was a roller coaster read, and is probably not for everyone. I knew this book was going to be dark, I just didn't know it was going to disturb me as much as it has. Jess, as a character, is flawed and dysfunctional. The story is done in her POV so you are privy to every single bad decision-making process in her head. She could be excruciating and at times it was really hard to root for her, but at the same time, I couldn't put this book down (the same way you couldn't look away from a train wreck). It was with much anxiety that I read on and thought she deserved every heartache happening to her, and also wonder how a love story so effed could have a happy ending. Jess did turn her life around, and the greatest love story she learned to accept is the one about loving herself.

If you plan on reading this, be warned about heavy topics (sexual assault, emotional abuse, toxic friendships). Overall though, this was worth the anxiety and I'd recommend this as a poignant read.

DNF at 32%

I didn’t have high hopes for this book since it’s described as dark, but it was worse than I expected. I picked it up because of TikTok recommendations, but I’m disappointed.

Jess, the main character, lacks common sense. She identifies as queer but enters a relationship with a man for "safety," even though all men are supposedly dangerous. Ironically, this "safe" man turns out to be verbally abusive and nearly crosses into sexual abuse. Then she meets Georgia, and their relationship feels like instant love with no real chemistry.

There were so many frustrating details that I lost count. The book leans heavily on stereotypes and, in a way, seems to suggest that abuse is acceptable, which is something I can’t overlook. Jess constantly conforms to the male gaze for a false sense of security, which, in 2025, is just infuriating.

Some people were waiting for my thoughts before picking this up, and unfortunately, I won’t be continuing, though never say never. I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you’ve read the trigger warnings and still want to give it a try, you might have more patience than I do.

I never DNF books, and this is my first, but if I keep reading, my brows might be permanently furrowed.

This is a hard book to rate. I like that it was unique. But I think to a degree, that uniqueness is what killed the story for me. It was so trope-y, it was as if it didn't know what it wanted to be. And I don't think I've ever rooted so hard for a couple NOT to get together.

Dark romance, a love story, suspense, self-sabotaging MC, dabbling in BDSM, coming out, domestic abuse, betrayal, cybercrimes, homophobia; internal and external - a lot of what seemed dated. etc.

Some tropes, heavy tropes, were thrown in and dropped just as fast. Two that bugged me were the mention of an eating disorder way too late in the story, and self-harm. Neither was addressed and would've been better left out in my humble opinion, but then we wouldn't have two more tropes to add to the tally.

The female MC, whose head we are in for the entire book, dates a non-binary person and someone else who is Poly, 'cause you know, she has to sample all these things.

I hate bagging a book, but this is my review and how it made me feel, so don't come pouncing on me.

This is listed under erotica on Amazon, but it's not an erotic novel either. Sure, there is spice, but it's there, then it's not.

With all that said, the book kept me reading, and for that alone, it deserves 3 stars.

Would I read more by this author? Yes, if it was more decisive about what it wanted to be.

DNF 20%. I can't do this anymore. Between the AI-generated mush in the synopsis, forgetting bisexuality exists, the blatant fatphobia and the low-tier Disney-villain energy from antagonists, all of that in just under 3 chapters, this book and I weren't off to a strong start.
It didn't get better afterwards, nothing felt right. I would have held on if it wasn't so needlessly long; I see where it's (not) going and I honestly can't be bothered to stick it out for 450 pages.

I noped out when the (TW: all of them) From what I gather from other reviews, the following chapters are Don't care. I honestly don't have the mental bandwidth for this shit.

So she sabotages a great relationship so she can fuck around, she finds out it's not for her (after 3 tries) and then is shocked when the girl of her dreams doesn't want her back?
...k

This book was definitely not plotted out very well and there was quite a few twists and turns that honestly didn't make much sense to me.

I really can't explain them as it's a huge twist and shock towards the end but the entire time it was happening I was totally and utterly confused.

I'm also very shocked that no one in this MCs life felt the need to address that she may need some serious therapy for her severe anxiety disorder that happens throughout the ENTIRE book? She didn't disregard therapy when she was younger and so desperately needed it, but I felt like once her therapist gave her the recommended "write in your journal," that seemed to be it and left me very puzzled. This child was brutalized and that... that's IT?!
Also, I thought that this might mean we'd see journal entries throughout the book or such and nope. Just the two mentions at the beginning and towards the end so... alrighty. I didn't really see a point for it except to explain the ending, which... we didn't really see much of it so it felt like a weak closure.

The main twist is utterly confusing because how did this character get a hold of this SUPER SECRET PROGRAM THAT NOT EVEN THE POLICE KNOW ABOUT. Like.... wat.

Honestly the MC, Jess, is honestly just insufferable and I almost dnf'd this so many times due to the constant stupid decisions she would make.

Somehow these two still end up together and I'm super irritated because honestly she did NOT deserve Georgia. No one in this book did. Georgia should have moved the fuck away from this entire group and lived her best life with someone who gave a damn.

I...

This book had good parts... However, I couldn't exactly enjoy them due to the twists that I think were supposed to add suspense, but only left me with whiplash. I don't know if the author is queer, but the near constant bashing that was happening was a bit much. If that is her experience or anyone else's, I strongly encourage you to move. I've been an out lesbian for many years and don't have people being so consistently aggressive.

DNF @ 38%. I’m not sure if it’s just not for me, but I feel like the pacing could have been stronger. While sapphic books aren’t usually my go to genre, I do enjoy reading them from time to time. However, at 38%, it felt like not much had progressed beyond a few steamy moments. Normally, when I'm enjoying a book, I can power through without needing frequent breaks, but that wasn't the case here. I might revisit it in the future, but for now, it just didn’t capture my interest the way I hoped.

Unfortunate and Misguided

This novel unfortunately falls short in several critical aspects, making it a difficult and, at times, deeply unsettling read. While marketed as a sapphic romance, it fails to capture the depth, nuance, and authenticity that the genre deserves. The character dynamics feel unnatural, the plot meanders without clear direction, and the intimate scenes lack both emotional resonance and technical fluidity.

Beyond structural and stylistic shortcomings, the book raises deeper concerns regarding its portrayal of sapphic relationships. Rather than offering a thoughtful, well-researched representation, the narrative instead feels exploitative, seemingly written without an understanding of the very community it seeks to depict. A responsible approach to storytelling, particularly within a marginalized and often misrepresented group, demands more care, insight, and respect than what is evident here.

While every author brings their unique perspective to their work, fiction is ultimately a reflection of thought, worldview, and intention. In this case, the portrayal of sapphic identity feels less like a genuine attempt at representation and more like a misguided venture into a space that requires sensitivity and authenticity. The result is a novel that, rather than celebrating its subject matter, instead leaves a sense of discomfort and disservice in its wake.

This book was simultaneously doing too much while also giving the bare minimum at the same time. It felt very outdated with it's homophobic comments being thrown out at the mfc. Jess was also terribly unlikable, Georgia was like a plain slice of bread, Dreadfully Boring. I didn't feel the "connection" at all. Once again, I've learned my lesson of taking overhyped book reqs from Tiktoks made by the author themselves. Wouldn't recommend unless you're hungry for nothing.

tldr: I started writing my thoughts at 40% when I should have dnf but curiosity won me over. It did not get better, not with the forced plot twists, multiple plot jumps, and the lack of showing meaningful scenes that Jess’ monologues felt repetitive. The graphic scenes didn’t bother me as much as how disconnected and jarring the book feels with the way the story was going. And I dare say, it is not a sapphic love story; not the way one would expect.

Full thoughts with some minor spoilers ahead:

I had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet my expectations. While I appreciate its attempt to explore complex themes like trauma, self-discovery, and sapphic love, the execution left much to be desired. Despite wanting to set the book aside early on, I pushed through in hopes that my perspective might shift—but sadly, it didn’t.

Jess’s Journey: Trauma Overshadowing the Love Story

The protagonist, Jess, is clearly grappling with deep-seated trauma, and while this adds emotional complexity, it often overwhelms the narrative. Her experiences of gaslighting, verbal abuse, and an attempted assault by her ex-fiancé create a heavy backdrop. However, these events are not adequately unpacked in a way that feels authentic or healing. Instead of providing space for reflection and recovery, the story quickly transitions into a highly sexual relationship with Georgia, her love interest.

This abrupt shift feels disjointed and jarring. For instance, their first kiss sort of follows a scene where Jess endures manipulation and abuse, making it difficult to view the moment as tender or romantic. After Jess broke up with her fiancé and was almost graped by him for wanting to leave him, she went to Georgia’s and experienced her first sapphic moment. The immediate jump into explicit intimacy after such traumatic events felt rushed and emotionally incongruent. While sexual expression can be a response to trauma (especially one that happened when she was really young), the narrative doesn’t explore this dynamic with the sensitivity it deserves.

Missed Opportunities for Connection

Another challenge is the lack of gradual relationship building between Jess and Georgia. The book tells us that Georgia is patient and understanding, but we rarely see meaningful scenes that show their emotional connection growing. Much of their time together is glossed over, leaving readers with a relationship that feels underdeveloped. A deeper exploration of their conversations, shared moments, and mutual vulnerability could have added much-needed balance to the story.

For example, Jess’s guilt about fantasizing about women and her hesitation around coming out are significant aspects of her journey. These moments could have been opportunities for heartfelt discussions between the characters. Instead, these topics are either rushed or addressed too late, which diminishes the emotional payoff of their relationship.

A Love Story That Struggles to Shine

At its core, the book seems torn between being a love story and an exploration of trauma. Unfortunately, it struggles to balance these elements. Jess’s internal monologue is dominated by fear and anxiety stemming from her past, making it hard to fully invest in the romance. While the book features explicit scenes, they feel disconnected from the emotional intimacy that makes a love story resonate.

Conversations about trauma, especially related to sexual assault, can be powerful and important in fiction. However, this book doesn’t fully embrace the opportunity to delve into these issues in a meaningful way. As a result, the love story between Jess and Georgia—which had so much potential—ends up feeling overshadowed and underdeveloped.

Final Thoughts
While the book bravely attempts to tackle difficult subjects, it struggles with pacing, emotional depth, and character development. Readers looking for a tender sapphic romance may find themselves wishing for more moments of connection, healing, and joy between the characters. For those who enjoy stories that explore trauma and its impact on relationships, this might still be worth a read—but with tempered expectations.

I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t work for me. The story leaned way too heavily on overused clichés and didn’t feel authentic at all. It honestly came across like it was written by a straight woman imagining what a sapphic relationship might look like, rather than someone who truly understands the community…

The love story progressed wayyyy too fast.. it felt rushed and unrealistic. The characters barely had time to connect emotionally before diving into intense declarations of love and sex scenes. Speaking of which, the sex scenes felt forced and a little performative, rather than natural or intimate. Instead of building real chemistry, it was like the story was checking boxes for drama and spice.

In the end, I couldn’t connect with the characters or the romance. I appreciate the effort to tell a queer story, but it needed way more depth, more time, and a much more genuine understanding of sapphic relationships.

This book wasn't even out yet when I stumbled across the author's tiktok promoting it. I had the impression that Lisa Evans is also gay so of course I would love to support a sapphic creator and enthusiastically waited for the launch.

Now, after just finishing chapter 7 I have a looooot of thoughts. So let's get started:

(WARNING! The following points may include spoilers!!!)

The main character, in her mid to late 20s, had a traumatic experience so she got engaged to a 6'5 muscly guy in hope to feel safe in the world. Yet the guy is verbally, emotionally and (as I expect for the following chapters) s*xually abusive towards her.
One night, just as she found the courage to finally open up to her best friend that she is a lesbian, a miracle happens! The best friend shares that she just left her man for a woman, she was also secretly gay this whole time!!! And not only that but her new girlfriend has a best friend that is also gay. And guess what? The protagonist falls in love AT FIRST SIGHT with that best friend!!! Crazy, right?! What a plot twist!!!
So they go out for the first time to a gay bar, where Jess, our sweet main character baby gay Jess, feels weird because she is wearing heels. And Georgia, the girl that Jess suddenly wants and needs, is acting cold and distant (and don't get me started on the lack of basic manners...) because, as we later find out, she thought that Jess is another straight girl visiting a gay bar. Cause you know - she is engaged to a man and is in heels... At a gay bar... Anyway...
After a slight argument, Georgia starts being flirty with baby gay Jess. Jess is radiating heart emojis. Her boyfriend is being an a**. But Georgia, oh Georgia... The very first single lesbian Jess had laid eyes on, she is perfect. And you know what they have in common? They both baby talk to dogs!!! THEY ARE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER!!!

🤨😐😮‍💨🥱🫠😒 <-- pick one reaction, they are all valid.

My view may be biased because I was comfortable with who I was from a very young age, I'm not familiar with the experience of finding your true sexuality later in life. But you cannot convince me that this book is truly written by a sapphic.
First of all, enough with the "lesbians are gay because they see men as monsters". Lesbians are gay because they they find women astonishing (and love to eat p***y), not because most men suck. They don't even think about men.
Second of all, do you think all women in gay bars look like Shane McCutcheon? Did we forget fems exist?!
And while we're on the crappy stereotypes - lesbians do not fall in love with every woman/lesbian they encounter.
Also what's with the "my best friend is dating your best friend" plot? This ain't Hallmark, we're not straight and we're not teenagers anymore.
You know what also shouldn't be straight? Jess' sexual fantasies. Yet here we are...

No wonder so many women DNF it. Thank God it will be read mostly by lesbians, 'cause if a straight person picks it up, they'll end up with a disgustingly cringy view on queerness of women.

PS. A friendly reminder that bisexual and demisexual women exist.

*****

I'm putting an end to this after chapter 49. This is psychological torture. The "author" must be banned from using computers, pens, paper. Ban her from the beach as well, she might write something stupid on the sand. My God, this was horrible... I've read a lot of awful books but this one is on freaking steroids. I might turn to The Bible after this...

Wow.

This book! This book!

There were a lot of triggers in this book, approach with caution.

It had me feeling a lot of different feelings. That was an amazing rollercoaster ride with Jess. I got angry at her when she broke it off with Georgia, and then my heart broke for her with everything Li orchestrated. I even felt bad on Bex and Georgia's behalves. But everything that Jess went through to get to the end is so, so real. A lot of people, women out there are in this same situation and many of them don't find a way out of it.

A few times in the book I was scared that Jess would give up the fight. But she made it through the other side, and the sun shone again.

Just wow. Thank you Lisa. Please write more of these amazing stories.

DNF @ 22%. This book went from one end to the complete opposite end. One chapter was purely about abuse, and then the next chapter was pages and pages of sex. The two ‘main’ characters had no chemistry, but all of a sudden, they were pining for each other. Either the author missed out on key details or they just weren’t there to begin with. This may be the first time I’ve read a sex scene and felt nothing. It was like reading a dictionary: boring. Save yourself hours of your life and skip this book. It’s not worth it.

I so SO badly wanted to like this book- but the main character is insufferable, with not a redeeming quality within her. The NSFW parts of the book are okay in terms of the writing itself which is why I’ve given this review 2 stars. But as for pacing? Way too fast, with multiple time jumps between pivotal moments of growth. The plot wants to cover serious topics but struggles to make them feel anything but ‘edgy’ and a bit of a slap in the face. The author spoon feeds the reader exactly what the main character thinks and feels, only to then watch the character continue to make stupid decisions again and again in consecutive chapters. It’s like a flogging- just when you think it’s finally over, oh no! Another crack of the whip that feels flaccid yet somehow still painful? I suppose theres skill in that.
I wouldn’t recommend for readers looking for a plot to marry with the NSFW scenes or readers who need some invested stakes in the main character to actually enjoy them.
I would recommend for people who enjoy NSFW scenes alone, but i recommend just skipping to those pages in all honesty.

This book was simply ok.. I could not finish this book as I started to get lost in everything. Some parts of the book were good, but once it got past her woman "fantasies" and "reality" hit her I couldn't take it anymore. Her wanting constant validation from people who didn’t have much value to her really turned me off about this book.

I got to a point in this book that I could only tolerate reading 3-10 pages daily before I decided to stop reading altogether (163 pages in). I really wanted to like this book but it started getting sloppy. The jumps in scenes were a bit confusing. The singular POV was kind of boring.

This book felt like it was written from a straight woman's pov on what she thinks it's like to be in the LGBT+ community. Idk. Hate that it had so much hype on TikTok to be a total disappointment.

I really hope that I can come back to the book, and enjoy it all the way through the end. As of now though I’m having trouble 🥲

This is a MUST READ!! I am mindblown. This book is everything, author has so much talent!
This is a dark romance so please check the trigger warnings.
Trauma, abuse, betrayal, stalking, coming out, pain, self discovery, some of the most sensually intense spice i have ever read, again, please check the trigger warnings. this book has it all and ended with me crying my eyes out. Its beautifully written and sucks you right in. I went through ALL the emotions with this one and I am pretty sure I will be in book hangover land for awhile. I saw so much of myself and my own story in this book and for that reason it will forever hold a special place in my heart. Read it! You will not regret it . I will be eagerly waiting for the very next book she writes to drop.
