This was an action packed adventure that any fantasy reader is sure to enjoy! From the beginning it was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat with twists that I didn't see coming! The world building had me care about the characters and had moments of suspense! If you enjoy epic quests with surprising twists, definitely read this!
When 6 companions end up on a journey will they be able to save themselves, and the world, from the evil empire? Each of them very different, and with their own reasons to help, will they find the Elemental Jewels before the Emperor Kivvest? Will they be able to work together for the greater good?
I received an ARC with no expectation of a review. All opinions are my own.

Fire and Lightning by Thomas Tarasios is a fast-paced fantasy adventure. Ryn loses his family and gains powers all in one day. Thrown into a magical conflict, Ryn ends up with a ragtag team of people for revenge and to save a Queendom. What chance does this farmboy have against powerful enemies?

This book has all the makings for a great story. Secret identities, quirky characters, airships, and magical jewels! I appreciated how the story kept you in the action and there was always something new to discover.

My greatest challenge was it felt like things were happening to Ryn versus his decisions propelling the plot. A lot of his motivation is based on a "might as well do this now" since there were so many other motivations by other characters. It kept the story moving but didn't make me as attached to Ryn.

I think those who love Disney’s Black Cauldron and Avatar the Last Airbender might enjoy this book!

ARC Review-
“Fire and Lightning” focuses on Ryn an average young man who witnesses his entire hometown of Cleasor, including his parents getting slayed and burned to the ground by the Imperial Empire. After narrowly escaping persecution he runs into several quirky characters and together they form a ragtag group of misfits. The group consists of a farm boy, a princess, a sky pirate, a purple-haired engineer, a drug-addicted shadowfinger assassin, and an elderly healer. While they all have different reasons for joining the group they’re all on the same page of wanting to stop the Imperial Empire from gathering all the Primeval Jewels. As time goes on the group realizes that several of them are already Jewel-touched giving them elemental powers that may or may not give them an upper hand in their plans. This was an interesting read unlike anything I’ve read before. It had a steampunk feel mixed with magic and adventure. I enjoyed the characters as I always enjoy a quirky group that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to work together well. There was a lot of religious undertones which would normally turn me off from a book but I found the context that this theme was mentioned was not bad. The author has mentions of religion, however, many of the characters believe differently from one other, but they are still able to coexist which I found to be done in good taste. my favorite part of the story was the princess’s kingdom for obvious reasons, number one it being a matriarchy. This was a fun read and I’m absolutely stunned by the ending. I will be on the lookout for book two.

This is going to be an interesting and unique series! The characters are great yet flawed which makes them relatable and believable. The world was an intriguing mixture of fantasy and steampunk which I absolutely LOVED! I can’t wait for the next book!

I enjoyed reading this first book in the Saga of The Jewels series!

The story follows Ryn, whose family and hometown has been burned to the ground by imperial soldiers, all on the hunt for the Ruby Jewel. Ryn finds himself imprisoned with the beautiful princess Nuthea who reveals that her kingdoms houses the Lightning Jewel that the empire is after. Together with the sky pirate Sagar, the engineer Elrann, healer Cid, and the former imperial shadow singer Vish, Ryn and Nuthea set off to warn Nuthea’s people that the imperial forces will stop at nothing until the lightning jewel and all the primeval jewels are in their hands.

This story was filled with elemental magic and a steampunk vibe that I absolutely loved! I will admit that there are a few plot/development choices that I was a bit confused by and these things partially affected my enjoyment of the story/rating.

There is a Christian theme scattered throughout about belief in One God, but then the kingdom that holds this belief is a matriarchal one where the woman rule and enslave men. Women also marry each other but use men for work and “surrogacy”for pregnancy. There is also a couple of brief scenes where the main male character who internally voices his attraction towards the main female character, at one point thinking of her bathing/naked and this causes him to be aroused which is alluded to but not described. I felt like this scene just didn’t make sense because the two main characters are young adults, and their actions/words showcased their youth up to this point but this scene made them seem older/more experienced with the world when throughout the rest of the story this was not the case. The drug addicted assassin plot line was really well done, though might be a bit mature for a younger adult to read. Depending on if this story is planned to be a young adult series or New Adult, this would also affect/alter my viewpoint/understanding on the things I described above.

Romantic Content: Brief Attraction Mildly Described, Vague Internal Thoughts Stated by Main Male Character of Female Character Bathing/Being Undressed, Main Male Character Vaguely Acknowledges Arousal, Brief Allusions to Sexual Relationships But Not Descriptive

TW: Fantasy Violence, Swearing Scattered Throughout, One Main Character Suffers Through a Coerced Drug-Like Addiction

Fire and Lightning
A Review
By Joseph L. Wiess

The first thing I thought about when I was given the advanced copy of Fire and Lightning was how much the cover reminded me of Star Wars. It was so iconic that when I showed it to my sister, the first words out of her mouth were “Star Wars.”
The similarities didn’t end there. There were easter eggs spread throughout the book, from the names of minor characters Wedge and Biggs to insults like Sleemo and Poodoo. That’s not surprising since the major characters could have been pulled from A New Hope. There was a farm boy whose parents were killed by an agent of the evil Empire. The farm boy met and rescued a kidnapped princess. The Princess hired the pilot of a pirate airship who didn’t believe in the great one God. They came across a mechanic and the old man who started teaching the farm boy about the mystic power of the gemstones, as well as how to fight with a sword.
The farm boy had this annoying tendency to attack the Imperial Agent, General Vorr, on sight, even when it almost ended in his death several times. In a surprise twist, it was the princess who had stupidly revealed the primordial stones and their hiding places to the General, who used the primary powers of the first two stones to begin an invasion of the other smaller countries. Another character, a stoned assassin, was sent after the princess and the farm boy with orders to kill them or bring them in. After being captured by the mechanic, who used a black powder pistol to shoot him, the stoned assassin was healed by the old man, who then attempted to wean the assassin off of the drugs.
This sets the tone for the book, and despite a few spelling errors, I enjoyed the story. It was a nice little romp in a world that was at once nostalgic and different.

This is the first book in the Saga of the Jewels series by Thomas Tarasius. Think Star Wars meets Avatar: The Last Airbender with a dash of The Chronicles of Prydain for good measure. Ryn is a farm boy who suddenly finds himself thrust into a world of magic, danger, and destiny. Ryn’s parents were killed by an agent of the Evil empire and losing everything to the ruthless Imperial warriors, Ryn discovers he’s the keeper of a powerful ruby—one of twelve Elemental Jewels that could either save or doom the world. Ryn rescues a sharp-tongued kidnapped princess, the princess hires a swaggering sky pirate, and they come across a mysterious healer, a gunslinging engineer and an opiate-addicted assassin. Together, they must navigate treacherous skies, ancient secrets, and their own clashing personalities to stop the tyrannical Emperor Kivvest from seizing ultimate power. It’s fast-paced, full of heart, and brimming with magic and mayhem. This electrifying YA fantasy adventure had me cheering from page one. With a scrappy underdog hero, a vibrant crew of misfits, and a dazzling display of elemental magic, the story bursts with charm and action. As they embark on a perilous mission to challenge a ruthless empire, the stakes soar, and the friendships deepen—delivering heart, humor, and edge-of-your-seat thrills in equal measure.

I really enjoyed this fantastic young adult fantasy adventure novel.

This is both an intriguing and captivating story about a colorful band of characters who randomly, or not so randomly, end up together searching for the 12 Primordial jewels while battling the evil Empire. The cast ranged from a humble farm boy seeking revenge, to a wayward princess wanting vindication, to an elderly "grandfatherly" healer serving as mentor and guide to his young compadrates. The sky captain seeks riches, though possibly more, while the engineer and assassin have found belonging with this small band of travelers and adopted the mission of securing and protecting the jewels. The story reads easily and is full of action and adventure as our gang race across the planet. I can't wait to find out hoe the next leg of their journey goes!

Clean easy read that draws you in. Characters and plot well developed. I liked even the good characters make mistakes and are not perfect. Whitty banter, not a dull moment. Main characters are an odd group to have together a princess, a pirate, a farmboy, an assassin, an engineer, and a older healer all a bit quirky. Leaves you with a bit of a cliffhanger but a feeling of a segment completed. (Brief respite before more adventure? ) Looking forward to next in series. Some good lessons on forgiveness and belief (not overtly Christian but resembles it)

Forgiveness, murder, empire takes over, betrayal, making amends, revenge, one true one, powerful crystals, good vs evil, war, saving the world.

Ryn woke to horrible screams which at first he thought were dreams. Finding his mother frozen in shock as the door slammed open and a large black armored knight burst through the door. Using his sword the knight killed Ryns mother then began swiping at him, Ryn saw his chance and ran. What his father gave him before he died and he was captured and the girl Nuthea explained to him about crystals and their importance.

As they run, hide and ride they take the time to learn about the prmoral jewels.

I enjoyed reading Fire and Lightening by L.I.T. Tarassenko. A new genre for me and great to get the opportunity to read it. To go back to the ages of Knights, Magic, Kingdoms and Princess's. If you enjoy those ages and times you will enjoy reading it also.

A boy who yields fire and a princess who can knock you out with lightning. Suspenseful from beginning to end, even with a surprise ending that sets up book 2. Can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book.
Characters grow in maturity, awareness, and abilities as the misfit band of adventurers grow in numbers.
You find yourself lost in time as you quickly turn page after page to see what will happen next.
Inner and outward struggles among characters bring realism and believability into the story.

An excellent beginning to what looks like an excellent series with a steampunk feel. A group of six diverse personalities coming together to prevent a power-hungry ruler from subjugating the citizens of an entire world. I thought all of these characters were brilliantly portrayed with complex and engaging personalities. Interesting twists in the plot as well as magic and some vicious battles kept me engrossed in this book. I got some laughs out of the character interactions, and it was hard to put this book down. I highly recommend this book to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.

With no preamble, it’s straight into terrible action for poor Ryn. It goes from bad to worse before he terrifyingly seems to use fire to protect himself. Unfortunately he’s too stunned to do anything else and is knocked out. What happens next is a series of encounters and events that takes him a while to acknowledge, even if he doesn’t necessarily understand it all. The fact that the people he meets are not all they appear doesn’t help either. This is a great first episode of The Saga Of The Jewels, I’m looking forward to Book 2.

I received my copy for free, and am happily writing this review voluntarily.

This is a very clean, youth intended series that seems like a combo of The Air Bender, The Gemstone Warriors, and the history/mythology of Amazon female warriors.
A 17 year old farm boy wakes up to find his village being destroyed and everyone murmured. He witnesses his parent’s death, and is tasked to protect a ruby that he never knew existed. He acquires fire ability, but loses the ruby to the enemy. His journey is joined by others who are gem touched, or may be/soon to be. Certain gems give the ability to control the different abilities. This has religious themes. This ragtag group go on an adventure to stop one empire from gaining all the power in order to enslave everyone.

Actually this is the first book of the saga. There is a sort of short story wich I hardly recomend not to read.
Good magic with a bit of steampunk enviroment.
Solid growing characters with a complex and changing ralationship.
A fast paced story with plenty of dangers and fights.
Great world construction (and in expansion).
A bit naive the 'YA' part of the end but with an extraordinary epilogue.

There is a small danger that the next books became a bit repetitive, hopefuly the writer will solve it with some twists, new characters and new sources of danger.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I felt sorry for Ryn who had lost everyone and everything to the Imperial warriors as their general was determined to find the twelve emerald stones that would give him great power to defeat anyone who defied him. Poor Ryn was just a farm boy, young and dumb to his world and he didn't know how to fight with a sword or to command the ruby stone that his father had given him to keep safe before his father had died. I NEVER READ BOOK ONE, BUT IMAGINE HOW EXCELLENT IT WAS.

Fun adventure fantasy with good character development, plenty of action and interesting emotional interaction. While it wraps up enough that it can be a stand alone book, it leads into the next book enough to make one want to locate it. While there is violence, it isn't terribly graphically bloody. The romance is more wistful and implied than overt. A good read.

Saga of the Jewels, Book 1: Fire and Lightning is a thoroughly enjoyable read with engaging characters and a well-crafted world. I did find it a little on the short side, and I was left wanting more—but that’s not entirely a bad thing. The story moves quickly, the characters are easy to connect with, and the ending caught me by surprise. I’m definitely curious to see where the story goes in Book 2.

This book is a fun read with tones of Avatar and other Manga. While the only character that has any real depth is the main character, there is plenty of room for character development with the feel that each book will reveal more about the main adventurers. This book would suit tweens well, with the adventure being faster paced and only a few pauses to expand on the backstory.

An interesting start to a series. In particular the unorthodox melding of the crew as they battle both against tyranny and for survival. A fantasy read that keeps you engaged as the crew start a quest. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

I found this book gripping and enjoyed every chapter. Vish's character was probably my favourite - I'm hoping some of the nuances of the others might be explored in the nextbook - hoping some of their internal battles might come to the surface like they do for Vish and Ryn. Great work.
