Graeme Parker, known to millions as The Hoof GP, has captivated hearts across the world with his unscripted videos, set against the stunning landscape of Southwest Scotland. His humble, down- to-earth charm and the raw authenticity of his work with cattle have earned him billions of views and a devoted global following. But Graeme’s route to success wasn’t marked by good fortune from the outset.
Beneath the surface of viral fame lies a story far more complex than anyone could imagine. His recognisable smile masks a man shaped by deep personal loss, twenty-five years of undiagnosed mental health struggles, and haunting family secrets – including the unsolved mystery of his father’s death.
In Bruised Sole, Graeme opens up like never before, revealing the vulnerable, human side of his life. It’s a story of survival, resilience, and the search for peace, filled with unexpected twists and moments of profound reflection. This isn’t just about the man you see online – it’s about the hidden battles we all fight and the truths we often keep buried.
Graeme Parker is a full time, professional cattle hoof trimmer, living and working in South West Scotland.
The Hoof GP is a YouTube Channel where Graeme chronicles his life working with cattle and living on the beautiful coast of Scotland.
Graeme's videos have reached over 3.2 billion views across the globe and in a recent Australian newspaper article he was described as "the biggest agricultural influencer on Planet Earth".
Graeme is changing the world of cattle hoof care, by bringing it to the forefront of people's attention. Launching an online hoof trimming course is one of the many ways he's achieved that. Within the first few months of its launch, thousands upon thousands of people had signed up to the course—proving peoples thirst for more knowledge on the subject.
Sales of The Hoof GP’s first book, Bruised Sole, smashed all expectations, selling over 15,000 copies in its debut week.
Graeme is happily married to his wife Ashley and has 3 beautiful children, Maddie, Keir and Campbell, whom he adores.
This is a hell of a memoir. I didn't really know what to expect from it - I just like watching this guy trim cows' feet, so all I could safely assume is that there was probably more to his life than that.
It was written with the help of his brother, but it reads recognisably as Mr Hoof GP's voice, which makes the whole book feel personal, which is always a plus in a memoir. The descriptions of the Scottish countryside made me very nostalgic for my own (Cornish) countryside upbringing, and the way that Graeme can gush about cow foot anatomy is very endearing.
A lot of this book is a tough read, though. Graeme's been through some shit. He's done some shit. He's very upfront about it. His frankness about his mental health issues - a few of which I resonated with personally - is refreshing, especially since he doesn't shy away from the parts that are lesser discussed. He describes this memoir as his way of showing life behind the social media persona, and I think it fits that description well!
Not even sure where to start. Graeme’s story is intense, emotional and beautiful. For him to have gone through so much and to come out the other side is inspiring and speaks to the incredible strength of the human spirit and desire to live.
I also appreciate Graeme’s desire to help animals and for people to understand that what you see online isn’t reality. I highly recommend this book.
I have watched Graeme working as a hoof trimmer (on cows) over social media for over a year now. I love his Scottish accent, the beautiful country of Scotland he works in and calls home, and his passion and enthusiasm for his work. His book is a truly inspiring read covering childhood trauma with a father who struggled with mental illness that went undiagnosed before his unexpected death at the age of 49. At one point, his father had his ex-wife and 2 boys lined up with his rifle as they played golf and with the help of some locals they barely managed to avoid being shot. They struggled to get support from the police due to the attitude of the time which viewed domestic violence as a family matter rather than a police matter. Graeme shares the realities of his financial struggles prior to becoming renowned as the Hoof GP, the ups and downs of finding himself, supporting a family, personal relationships, and his own battle with mental health. However, it’s the highs and lows of his mental health that really impacted me. Graeme is diagnosed with ADHD and rapid-cycling bipolar disorder as an adult and it’s his desire to take a different path from his dad that drives him to seek help. The realities of his condition pre-diagnosis are hard-hitting and left me holding back tears as I empathised with his battle. It brought to mind those that I know and love who face similar challenges but aren’t yet ready to seek the help they need. I hope those reading this book with whom Graeme’s story resonates with will be encouraged to seek help or continue to be the support to the best of their ability for those they love who need it. Thank you for sharing your story Graeme.
Graeme, well done for achieving so many life goals, so far, against what, at times were insurmountable obstacles and odds.
As someone who has survived the throws of Depressive illness over the past 30 years myself, I could identify with man of the course markers that you described so well, in a way that anyone could understand; not like a psychological, or psychiatric text book.
You got as gritty and mucky as you needed to, much like you do in your hoof trimming, so that the personal and the painful are presented, holding no punches, and in no manner an attempt to reach out for sympathy. It is that preparedness to be open and honest, nae, authenticity, that also endears the reader to want to read more, to see more and to be, like a fly on the wall learning that what you see is what you get.
I know what it’s like to put your life out there for all to see and read, having published my own story about 10 years ago. I’m also humbly aware, as you also appear to be, at just how helpful, you telling your story, including the bits that many others would try to hide from public view if they were telling theirs, your willingness to lay it all out, will prove to be a great resource for those newly diagnosed with Bi-polar Disorder and also for family members who are having a hard time coming to terms with their loved one’s diagnosis.
I would highly recommend this tome to anyone and everyone, that’s what I personally have taken from this. But, realistically, anyone who is studying psychology, or psychiatry, “Bruised Sole” should be mandatory reading. Not just for its friendly conversational tone, not simply as the voice of a survivor, but as the voice of one advocating for the lived experience of a person, not just a case study, but a real person, lifting their potential clients and patients into clearer focus as living breathing human beings.
I stumbled across your videos, as so many others have done, in my YouTube feed. In the same manner as I work with my flock (as a pastor) your style and care for the herds you help to maintain was a big part f what caused me to want to see more, and eventually got me hooked.
Fare Well as you continue in your journey.
PAX Graham (the other spelling. LOL) Perth, Western Australia
This a truly in-depth look into the life of a YouTuber that I thoroughly enjoy watching. I love his personable nature and his passion for the animals he cares for. This comes through beautifully in his book. I felt like he was someone I knew and cared for deeply as he shared his not so pretty story with us. Sharing similar issues and seeing how he overcame them and thrived is truly hopeful for me and others, I'm sure. Great work, Mr. Parker, and please keep up the awesome work!
I read this book in two sittings. It's really well written, and his story is quite sad, I am so happy and glad he's found his happy place and people. I am grateful he let us have a good look at his life! Thank you Graeme! Great book!
Loved the rawness of his confessions. Didn’t want to put the book down. Read it in two sessions. It provided me with a link into Graeme’s world. Highly recommend the book.
I cannot say how good this book was, I laughed and cried and learned a lot about cows feet. I would say a perfect read! It didn't read like a regular biography and I liked that. Even if you don't watch his YouTube channel you should read his book.
This was a beautiful, heartfelt book, and was co-written with much empathy and compassion.
Graeme Parker, best known by those who watch his addictive YouTube channel of: 'The Hoof GP', wrote this book with the help of his eldest brother, Robert - Bob to his family.
They have put together a window into Graeme's life, along with the lives of his family, where it touches on them; on his work; and on his job, trimming Cow's hooves.
Graeme, and indeed his whole family, have been through a lot in their lives, but you wouldn't know this, if you went by his Hoof GP persona.
When he told his viewers that this book is very different to the imaging he sends out on his channel, and that he was brutally honest in it, I had to order it, as he has ALWAYS come across as a very honest man, with himself, as well as everyone else.
I don't normally read many factual books, especially since leaving Uni, but I really enjoy his channel, and love learning everything I can about his job, where he spends his time trimming the hooves of cows, and sometimes Bulls, in farms all over Scotland.
So, I decided to buy it - & I am SO glad that I did!
This book is a memoire of his life. It's very much an eye-opener, and kept me riveted to its pages for three days straight - which, for those who know me, is a VERY slow read, for me.
But, the book fascinated me from the first paragraph, going deep into the ins and outs of Graeme's life, growing up on a rural farm, where his father raised prize-winning Charolais Cows.
Like many of us, Graeme, and his family, went through good times, and bad. But he also lived far too many years, suffering with undiagnosed mental illnesses, that impacted him both physically, emotionally and, of course, mentally.
His honesty, here, was truly beautiful, and I hope it will help others who read this very powerful book!
Bruised Sole is a tale of courage; of endurance; of heartbreak, and of hope, but the one thing it is truly about, is this lovely man's enduring love of the Country he was born in; the people who surround him; and the vocation that chose him, due to his Stepfather's job!
This is a very truthful tale of many losses, but is also one of hope, and of a deep-felt faith in Graeme's family, especially his wife, Ashley, whose calm sureness keeps him going, no matter what.
I truly love this book, I love it for its positive message, no matter the adversity he went through, for so much of his life.
I also love it for its stark honesty!
So, now I've finished this review, I'll be going to load up Book Seven, from the series: 'The First Beaufont,' that landed on my Kindle, yesterday.
It's called: 'The Untamed Fighter', by Sara Noffke, and co-written by Michael Anderle.
Then, once I've read it, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!
If you are a fan of the Hoof GP and Graeme, you will love this book. He has had a turbulent life and he pulls no punches in telling his story. A great read about a tremendous person.
Mr. Parker didn’t hold anything back. His story took the reader on a wild ride of ups and downs and in the end offered hope and shared his journey from despair to joy. He also shared his story of his journey with mental illness in a way that shows that there is no stigma. I couldn’t put this book down.
A book about resilience and success. it is a task story of "rags to riches". I discovered the Hoof GP on FB and was captivated by his spirit, likability, and, of course, the accent. I was fascinated by what he did and how he did it. The book is basically his journey from "then to now". I'm not sure that someone that doesn't know/follow him would enjoy the book.
Get the Audiobook, read my the author Graeme Parker. Graeme narrates a very personal life history. You might think you're getting into a story about hoof trimming and farm life with a hint of Scottish countryside. Well, buckle up. Graeme shares his childhood memories, parents divorce, family disfunction, adulthood, relationships, children and mental health. I really enjoyed Graeme's journey from being broke to a very lucrative YouTuber. He doesn't sugar coat anything. Everyone can relate with parts of Graemes story. It was just under an 11 hour audiobook. I could have listened for 11 more.
This was a random book club pick for March and while I didn’t know anything about him going into this book, I was pleasantly surprised. I can’t say I was hooked the entire time but there were moments that really grabbed me.
Brilliantly raw and honest. I found the timeline a little bit jerky, and the text contained a few annoying errors. But such is the nature of book production these days.
The cover image bothers me, Graeme is pretty handsome, or handsomely pretty, so the serial killer cover pic is a bit jarring to me. But that's hardly of consequence.
Like millions of others I live vicariously through Graeme's Hoof GP YouTube channel, if you know anything of him this book is definitely worth a read.
Cow's feet are inherently fascinating to me, and have made me reconsider devoting my better years to horses, who by comparison to cows, are the most ridiculous creatures. Granted, cows have cloven hooves and only ever need to be pasture, or yard sound. Whereas horses are expected to do things with a bossy lump of flesh on their backs, jumping over stuff or prancing around a dressage arena. But bloody hell, I cannot imagine a horse dealing with half the issues the cows get and recover from. The fact that hoof trimming cattle is currently unregulated is wild to me.
My favourite thing about this book, and I'm sure Graeme has had plenty of stick about it, is the level into which he describes how his YouTube took off and the financial rewards it has brought as a result. But he is completely humble about the whole thing, and acknowledges how it has all come about, partly through luck and circumstance. I think his success is mostly through an overwhelming desire to improve the knowledge and welfare of cattle.
I don’t know why I started watching his YouTube videos but I did, and so I really enjoyed this book. It’s especially great as an audiobook with Graham narrating (although the audio editing needs a second go-there are repeated bits and even a cut off bit)
I don’t want to spoil it. I’m getting 2 physical copies of the book as gifts for family members..— It is a story about the life of an ordinary man who happens to have an extraordinary nature. It reveals the impact of modern life on many things, work, marriage, financial debt, divorce, and a particularly masculine culture where men don’t always talk about these things.— He’s not anywhere saint by any means! He’s nearly 40 as he writes this book, which reminds me of my own kids, also in his generation. The current time ind immediate future is dependent upon their success… Food for thought…
Graham, heart on his sleeve, reveals the challenges of his life. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Graham does not realize what a truly Intelligent man he is. I hear it in his videos and in Bruised Soul. I guess if there is one more thing he needs to work on, it would be spirituality. Many would probably discount this, but I am fully aware how a relationship with God truly blesses one's life. Well-written book. This book holds truths about what many go through. I believe it will inspire some folks to see themselves and seek help.
I came to Bruised Sole already familiar with Graeme Parker through his videos, but nothing prepared me for how raw, personal and emotionally affecting his story would be.
I watched the man first. I stumbled across the videos, then actively sought them out, and before long I was completely absorbed — not just in the work he does, but in the calm, honesty and humanity that comes through the screen. Listening to Bruised Sole on audio, narrated by Graeme Parker himself, took that connection to an entirely different level. This wasn’t just a story being told — it felt like a conversation, raw and unguarded, delivered by the person who lived every painful moment.
This is not a polished, sanitised memoir. It’s bruised, honest and often uncomfortable — and that’s exactly why it works so powerfully. Graeme opens himself up in a way that takes real courage, speaking openly about grief, long-term mental health struggles, loss, and the weight of unanswered questions that never truly leave you. There were moments that made me pause, moments that sat heavy, and others that caught me completely off guard with their emotional force.
What struck me most was how relatable this story feels, even if your life looks nothing like his on the surface. Beneath the viral fame and recognisable smile is a man carrying years of silent battles — the kind many people live with quietly every day. That honesty makes this book incredibly moving and, at times, painfully real.
Bruised Sole isn’t just the story of The Hoof GP. It’s a story of survival, resilience, and finding ways to keep going when life has taken more than its fair share. Deeply moving, beautifully honest, and impossible to forget.
An excellent behind the scenes look into a popular YouTube influencer. Graeme Parker lays is soul bare for all to see and he describes his life from birth to present and the people and events that made him one of social media's popular host. Graeme reveals the highs and the lows in his life, the challenges of growing up with a father that went from a hard working farmer to the slow deterioration of mental illness that impacted his family and its future. Graeme, himself, face years of uncertainty as he tried to forge his own path jumping from job to job, city to city, family relations and his own rocky relationship with his first wife, their daughter and the resulting divorce. In an attempt to once again find his footing in life, Graeme turns to the new man in his mother's life who taught him first the skill of cold branding and then the job that would make Graeme the icon of hoof trimming know to thousands through his videos. With a new vocation that was slow to take off, to a new wife and children, to one the most well known hoof trimmers, all the while coming to grips with his own mental health battles, the book is a fascinating look into a man that went from rock bottom to the top of his game.
I watched Graeme on YouTube. Like many of his viewers his videos found me randomly and I am in no way connected to farms or cows, lol. But his personality on camera and the comradery he has with his crew, the farmers, and the animals kept me coming back. I would never have imagined such a history and it shows you just how dangerous social media is and how one sided and curated it can be. He has been through so much and I am very happy he has found level ground and a purpose. I laughed and cried and can only imagine how hard it was to share this with the world at large.
I will say for those thinking about reading, it is NOT a linear story. It jumps all around the past and present. It's all on topic for that chapter though so it makes sense. At least it did to my adhd brain, lol. I do think it would be hard to follow though if you aren't expecting it. Very conversational as opposed to flat out story telling. Hope that makes sense.

Honest, real, revealing, vulnerable. The best qualities of an autobiography. I have enjoyed getting to "know" the HGP and Mrs. HGP through their videos but this book peels away the facade of edited videos and reveals Graeme's background that he overcame and ultimately made him who he is today. It reveals some struggles and successes that many of us can identify and empathize with. I admit, sometimes the superficiality of edited videos makes our ability to enjoy the content and move on fairly easy and a deeper knowledge of the "characters" we see on those videos sometimes gives us a very different picture or insight, even to the point of being uncomfortable. That was not the case here. If anything, Graeme's willingness to be honest and vulnerable endeared him even more to me and made me want to "hang out" with him even more! If you are a fan of HGP, and I assume if you are reading this review you are, you will gain a greater appreciation for Graeme and his family sharing their lives with us.
What an interesting book. We have been watching the Hoof GP for quite a while since Covid. They are fascinating and sometimes gross, but also a relaxing way to spend time together. So when we heard he was publishing a book, we quickly ordered our copy. It has his signature on the first page and we felt like we were giving a little back to all the time He has given us through YouTube.
The book reminds me a little of the autobiography of Sully Erna, The Paths We Choose: A Memoir. It’s hard to see someone you look up to or admire and hear about all the bad choices or decisions they made. You get to a point when you say enough is enough. When will you ever learn. But in both books, you get to the tipping point. You see where things turn around, awareness of how their decisions play into the outcomes they are living.
I’m happy to read that the Hoof GP has a life that he truly deserves and hope it continues to many more years to come. Either way, we will be watching on YouTube to see how it turns out.
In this book, Graeme lays bare the story of how he grew up and eventually became The Hoof GP we know and love from his YouTube channel. It was,as expected, an emotional roller coaster. There’s just enough humorous moments to keep the reader from falling into miserable depression in the sad moments that arise. If you are looking for a bunch of technical information about hoof trimming, this is not that type of book. This book is about his real life journey through depression, bi-polar disorder, ADHD, and his tragic relationship with his father. He also shares what happened with his daughter. That in itself is a heartbreaking story.
I can’t say enough good things about this book. I learned so much about perseverance and how to overcome some of the worst things life throws at you. I enjoyed every last word of this book. It currently sits at the top of my favorite biographies list and in the top 5 of my favorite books overall that have had the greatest impact on me personally. Thank you, Graeme, for sharing your journey. I can’t wait for the next book! ❤️
I don’t rate memoirs as I feel someone’s life isn’t rateable but this is a brilliantly written book. I could hear Graeme’s distinctive voice in the prose and he was so open and candid about his life and struggles, which is very refreshing. I could have happily read a few more chapters, I’m surprised there was no mention of the other Graeme who films for him and edits the videos, not much about Kevin or derek but that’s my only real disappointment with the book. I was surprised Graeme didn’t speak about his time managing coffee shops too, as a fellow former barista I appreciate a bit of coffee geekery 😂 I recommend checking trigger warnings as the book covers heavy themes. The only bit I felt uncomfortable about was a story of a farmer’s blackening that verged on beastiality 🙈 The book is almost like a real life fairy tale as Graeme has overcome so much to get to where he is now and I wish him all the best in the future.
Wonderfully, written, young man. I cried many times, laughed till it hurt my face! M I have totally fallen in love with your sweet family! Keir is just like Ashley, quite & sweet & Campbell is just like you. He's funny. Never know when he's going to pop up in your videos. I am a descendant of Scotland, and my great great grandfather's last name was McClelland. One of my first cousins just got her British citizenship, and she plays music on her fiddle or violin. She loves Scotland! Thank you for helping me get to a psychiatrist after suffering with feelings i didn't understand, i was diagnosed with, OCD, ANXIETY & ADHD! YOU TOTALLY DESCRIBED HOW I WAS FEELING INSIDE!! And I got professional help & and finally, on the right doses of medications, you saved my life!!!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!! Hope & pray, Maddie gets back to you soon!!!!! Judy Gill, Florence, Alabama!
This book is like a real life fairy tale. It is a triumph in adversity story which looks and talks about issues that usually remain behind closed doors. Graeme (with Bob's help) relives some of the darkest moments of his life and reveals key moments that allowed him to turn his life around. This happens a lot. Graeme's story is by no means over, however he has created a legacy with this book and an incredible tool for those who want to learn from his story. This book is a must for anyone who is struggling, even if you are not yet ready to admit it. Bruised Sole: The Unfiltered Story of the Hoof GP
