There are unspoken rules in the dark forest, and Mia is no stranger to rules. As a practical and cautious individual, she has never been one to take a chance on the unpredictable. But when her life is abruptly upended by a failed romance and an uncertain future, she embarks on a journey through the rugged Appalachian Mountains. Along the way, she forms unexpected bonds with fellow travelers as they navigate the untamed wilderness, leading to an adventure she hadn’t bargained for.
Soon, she discovers that her traveling companions aren’t who they seem, and one of them harbors a dangerous secret. When a young woman is found dead, Mia learns there is something more sinister than apparitions lurking in the shadows of the woods. Despite the daunting circumstances and her guarded nature, she unexpectedly opens her heart to a stranger.
As she grapples with her perilous situation, the pressing question will Mia's wits be enough to outsmart a ruthless killer and emerge from the woods alive?
My second read that I really enjoyed it by Rachael Hartley. I loved the FMC in this story, & was infuriated with her at the same time.
Mia’s fiancé has wanted to hike through the Appalachian Mountains for as long as she can remember. When he convinces her to quit her job and give up her home (as this will take them months to accomplish) she is devastated when their relationship ends suddenly. No job or home to go back to, she decides to go on this adventure anyway. What she did not expect was a murderous psychopath in the mix of her fellow hikers.
I am truly enjoying Rachelle’s writing style and looking forward to more of her work. The eerie tone that she sets in this book, definitely matches the eerie vibes & atmosphere that it gives, as Mia allows nature to excite and frighten her simultaneously. Recommend this for readers that enjoy slow burn thrillers that builds tension, and then gives a satisfying release and conclusion

Never Whistle in the Woods by Rachael Hartley traps you in a maze of shadowy trees, where every step deepens the mystery every turn taken uncovers dark secrets hidden within. With every page, you’ll find yourself questioning what's the truth—and what's waiting just beyond the trees.
Mia, sensible and cautious, decides to escape her heartache by undertaking the grueling trek through the Appalachian trails she had once planned to explore with her fiancé. The Appalachian woods conceal secrets that few dare to uncover, guarded by a set of rules meant to protect those who enter. As she begins her journey alone, the woods begin to whisper. She soon finds herself keeping pace alongside interesting trail mates. Late night ghost stories shared around the campfire spark paranoia, even her companions can’t shield her from the revelations she’ll face on her journey. Days into her trek, a woman is found dead, and suddenly, the people she was beginning to trust around her seem scarier than any ghost... Is she safe? Will she survive the truths that await?
Rachael carries you through the story with smooth, easy to follow writing that is both engaging and paints an atmosphere of delicious distrust. Mia as a character was both relatable in her sadness and uncertainty as well as quirky and her interactions with the other hikers felt realistic. Sometimes the things she would tell people when she wasn't feeling comfortable I found to be exactly what I would have wanted to say but would have been too scared to, so I was glad she did. I could easily put myself in her perspective throughout the book. From start to finish this one kept me interested and I owe it alot to the forest setting. I loved that it took place during a trail hike and all the situations she endured were ones that I assume most hikers encounter....aside from the dead girl I hope. I felt myself constantly wondering what the mystery of the woods would be and when the title would play itself into the book...like why can't we whistle in the woods? Did not disappoint. It was a quick read, one of those late night read it in one sitting types. Even for my complaints regarding annoying characters or strange introductions were overlooked by my overall enjoyment. Personally I loved it.
While Rachael Hartley delivers a short read, it certainly packs a punch with its gripping storyline and, dare I say, unexpected twists. The eerie woods of the Appalachia had me on edge, and certain characters left me just as unsettled. It's a fast-paced, thrilling ride that lingers long after you've turned the final page. Just remember never to go off the trail and never ever whistle in the woods.
FYI I am very appreciated to have received this ARC. I spent such a short but enjoyable time reading this book but want to express that all opinions in this review were mine and mine alone. Many thanks for this opportunity Rachael Hartley and I look forward to giving her other novel a try.
Never whistle in the woods tells the story of a young woman named Mia. She and her fiancé Adam planned to hike the Appalachian trail, but on the day they want to leave Adam breaks up with her. With nothing left but her backpack and the items in it, she decides to hike the trail by herself. She bonds quickly with some other hikers and is glad she pushed through, but after sinister things start to happen and a young woman is found murdered Mia gets caught in a nightmare. Is there anyone she can trust out there?
I love books about hiking and I love a good thriller so I was really excited to pick this one up. Never whistle in the woods is the perfect blend of adventure, mystery and suspense. The story kept me interested throughout the book and every spare minute I had I found myself reading to unravel the mystery of the trail. The plot twists were shocking and I did not see them coming at all.
The relatable characters and the surroundings are vividly described and I felt myself a fellow hiker in the beautiful nature of Eastern America. This thriller really stands out to other thrillers and I can’t wait to read the rest of Rachael Hartley’s work.
Many thanks to @booksirens and the author for this review copy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Newly engaged Mia quit her job, gave up her apartment and sold all of her belongings in order to hike the Appalachian Trail with her fiance, only to be broken up with right before they were to leave. Mia decides to hike the trail on her own and quickly forms bonds with some fellow hikers. Soon she discovers that not everyone is who they seem to be. When a fellow hiker is murdered, Mia must figure out quickly who she can trust and find a way to keep herself from being next. I had a hard time putting this one down! Would rate it closer to 4.5 stars but decided to rounded up to 5.
This is not a good book. I paid for it myself so maybe that's part of the discrepancy in reception based on the reviews lol.
It's poorly written. Very little introspection from our POV characters and there's so much exposition that it reads like script direction. There's absolutely zero sense of urgency like, no descriptive imagery of the environment even though it promises some kind of Appalachian horror. Everything is "I woke up. I rose to a seated position. I had to urinate. I dropped my pants. I noticed Stock Male Character 2 looked sad." The result is a veeeryyyy shallow, one dimensional story.
The synopsis is not at all indicative of the quality of this story. There's a huge cast of characters and they're all interchangeable. Their interactions with each other are surface level and trite and somehow we're supposed to believe that everyone has chemistry??
Mia is a character whose self assessment (she thinks she's an overly prepared planner, detail oriented and always prepared) is really incongruent with how she presents. Book smart vs street smart but up to 11. And there isn't enough exposition or character development to unite these two things in a way that's compelling.
The villain of this story is a "Nice Guy™️" and a central theme (and I'm using this loosely because every chapter read like a bunch of unrelated vignettes haphazardly stitched together) is violence against women, I guess? Mia has little agency and is just... ugh.
AND THEN THERE'S A ROMANCE SUBPLOT IN ALL THIS THAT MAKES NO SENSE AND IS JUST SOOO CONTRIVED HELLO??
A young woman goes on an adventure of a lifetime after being dumped by her fiance. She gives up her job and life, ending up going the same place he does with a new girlfriend. As if this semi almost stalkish behavior is enough, she ends up meeting some quite unsavory characters. Other than calling a wild female pig a boar (mama pigs are called sows, I grew up on a farm), this was an absolute thrill ride at the end, and it wouldn't stop. This was a great, out in the middle of nowhere with a psycho read.
Equal parts haunting and heartfelt, Never Whistle in the Woods is a suspenseful, slow-burning thriller with a powerful emotional core. It invites readers deep into the Appalachian wilderness, where unspoken rules and eerie folklore simmer beneath the surface—and where silence is anything but peaceful.
Mia, cautious by nature and reeling from a recent breakup, heads into the mountains for solitude. But what was meant to be a reset quickly turns unsettling. Unexpected bonds form, strangers reveal fractured truths, and when a woman is found dead, the woods themselves seem to close in. Every step further into the wilderness brings tension, mystery, and the creeping dread that someone isn’t what they seem.
Rachael Hartley’s writing is atmospheric and quietly lyrical, with the forest setting almost becoming a character of its own. Mia’s perspective is grounded, making the unraveling suspense feel all the more intimate and real. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching a pragmatic heroine confront fear head-on—especially when survival means trusting your gut more than your guidebook.
If you love psychological thrillers with rich settings, strong female leads, and twists that feel earned rather than flashy, this one’s for you. It's the kind of story that lingers—and makes you think twice about hiking with strangers.

Never Whistle in the Woods by Rachael Hartley is a good thriller with a creepy forest setting and some suspenseful moments. The story follows Mia, who gets caught in a dangerous mystery while hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. The characters are interesting, and the tension builds well, but the ending didn’t quite live up to the strong beginning. It felt a bit long, and I was hoping for a bigger twist. Still, it's an enjoyable read for thriller fans.

Wow wow wow. Rachel Hartley had become one of my top authors. I can't share her enough. Seriously this was so well written and even when I thought I had it I was wrong. I love that the ending didn't abruptly stop like I thought it would and the story completely finished. The author has such a way with words and story telling I'm hooked. I've read both books in 2 days that's how good her books are. Absolutely fantastic extremely sad it's over. I looked forward to stealing a couple pages every chance I could.
I could not stop reading this novel. I was captivated from the beginning. Mia loved her job, but quit, sold her car and gave up her apartment. Her fiancé convinced her to hike the Appalachian Trail. He calls her the night before the start of the hiking to break up with her. Mia decides to hike the trail anyway. They realize there is a killer among them adding more danger on the trail. This is truly a page turning thriller.
No way Benjamin killed Claire and Holly and stabbed Nate!
Dave watching Benjamin for 6 months because he killed his daughter ?! Everyone thinks he’s crazy cause his wife died and he was a cardiologist and used to drink a lot
Gage throwing Benji(Benjamin) off the cliff yay!! And saving Mia but then benji coming back and the hotel room! OMG
And happily ever after with Gage and the kids and Mia :)

Storyline grabs ahold of you from the first page to the very last. Edge of your seat suspense with twists that will have you holding your breath. I was definitely glad I grabbed this book to read. First book by this author who will now be added to my TBR list of must reads. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A woman goes hiking on the Appalachian Trail and encounters all sorts of dangerous mysteries lurking in the woods.
I devoured this book in less than a day. The writing was superb, the plot twists shocking, and the story compelling. I would absolutely recommend getting your hands on anything this author writes.

Never Whistle in the Woods was an amazing read. So many twists and turns. I just wanted to keep reading. This is my second book read from Rachael Hartley and I think I found a new author to add to my favorites. Can't wait to read the next novel.
when I first started this book I expected more of an Appalachia lore supernatural book, but I was pleasantly surprised when it was not. This isnt my usual genre but I was not disappointed.
I went in blind to this book and LOVED it. I could not put it down which is rare for me. I like the writing style of this book, how the chapters are short, fast paced and how the story has a few different character pov’s. I think the author did a good job making you feel exactly how she intended you to about the characters as well. There was times where I actually laughed out loud at the main character/loved her and there were other times where I was genuinely annoyed/ rolled my eyes at her. I can’t wait to read more books from this author.
