✨ Halal x Sports Romance x Bookish Queen = A Perfect Match ✨
This book is like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day—comforting, layered, and impossible to put down. Beyond the Sidelines stole my heart with its thoughtful characters, soft romance, and deep cultural richness. Here’s why it’s a glowing 5 stars for me:
Khadra Warsame is the Ultimate Bookish Heroine: Khadra is everything I aspire to be—quietly brilliant, fiercely independent, and deeply compassionate. Her love for books and her career as a librarian made her such a relatable and lovable character. Every decision she made felt so true to her values, and I couldn’t get enough of her.
Hassan = A Gentleman With Heart: Hassan is the kind of male lead we need more of in romance—respectful, charming, and deeply reflective. As a retired soccer star navigating life outside the limelight, he brought a subtle vulnerability that paired perfectly with Khadra’s steady demeanor. His patience and kindness completely won me over.
Soft and Sincere Romance: This isn’t the kind of love story filled with grand gestures or heated arguments—it’s all about quiet moments of connection. The way Khadra and Hassan slowly built trust and respect for each other was beautiful to watch. Their chemistry was understated but so, so real.
Cultural Representation That Shines: The Somali-Canadian backdrop added so much richness to the story. From the nuanced family dynamics to the cultural traditions, it all felt so authentic and heartwarming. It’s rare to see this level of representation in romance, and it made the story even more special.
A Story of Growth and Finding Home: At its core, this is a story about two people figuring out their paths and finding something unexpected in each other. It’s tender, hopeful, and filled with moments that remind you of the importance of family, faith, and being true to yourself.
✨ Final Verdict: If you’re looking for a romance that’s soft, meaningful, and deeply respectful of cultural values, Beyond the Sidelines is an absolute must-read. Khadra and Hassan’s story will stay with me for a long time—an effortless 5 stars! 💖
5/5 stars across the boardsssss. I truly love reading I.Farah’s books! As an E.African Hijabi, it’s always a nice feeling reading something that shows representation, especially a halal love story like khadra & hassan’s story. My heart fluttered a lotttt! I was giggling, screaming and kicking my feet throughout this whole story
This is, without a doubt, one of the most heartfelt and captivating romances I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Hassan and Khadra’s love story stands as a beacon of what romance in fiction should be—genuine, respectful, and deeply moving. Unlike the typical toxic or overly dramatic tropes we often see in the genre, their relationship is built on mutual respect, emotional growth, and an undeniable connection that feels real and relatable.
Hassan’s quiet, steadfast devotion to Khadra is the kind of love that melts your heart. His actions speak louder than words, showing a selflessness and care that is truly swoon-worthy. He is the kind of romantic lead you don’t just fall in love with—you admire him. On the other hand, Khadra’s strength, determination, and unwavering sense of self make her an extraordinary heroine. She’s not just a love interest; she’s a fully realized character who commands respect and admiration on her own terms.
What truly sets Beyond the Sidelines apart is its rich cultural tapestry, seamlessly integrated into the story. The author skillfully weaves in cultural elements, offering depth and authenticity that enrich the narrative without ever feeling heavy-handed. The balance between personal struggles, cultural identity, and a love that transcends these challenges is masterfully executed.
This isn’t just a romance; it’s a story about two people finding strength in each other while staying true to themselves. If you’re looking for a love story that inspires, uplifts, and feels utterly real, Beyond the Sidelines is a must-read. It’s a book you’ll carry with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
5 Stars – THE SLOW BURN OF THE CENTURY, I’M UNWELL
Okay, where do I even START? This book absolutely wrecked me (in the BEST way), and I need to scream about it!!! The slow burn between Khadra and Hassan??? PERFECTION. I swear I was clawing at the pages every time they had a conversation. No touch, no grand gestures, just LOOKS, WORDS, and TENSION so thick you could cut it with a knife. The build-up is agonizing, but I loved every second of it.
Khadra is SUCH a relatable, inspiring character. She’s ambitious, proud, and so layered that you can’t help but root for her every step of the way. And Hassan… oh my GOD. He’s complicated, broody, and trying so hard to piece himself together after his life imploded. Their dynamic is so charged, yet so subtle, that I couldn’t breathe every time they were in the same scene.
It’s the little things that kill you—the way Hassan calls her “Bookworm” and she pretends it doesn’t affect her, the fleeting moments of eye contact, the conversations that say so much without saying anything at all. And THAT SCENE when he sees her for the first time in years?? Literal chills.
This isn’t your typical romance—it’s raw, real, and messy in the most beautiful way. It’s about two people with so much history and unresolved tension trying to find their way, both in life and with each other. I laughed, I cried, I yelled, “JUST SAY HOW YOU FEEL!” so many times my neighbors probably think I’ve lost it.
If you love slow burns that simmer until you’re left emotionally devastated and deeply satisfied, you NEED this book in your life. I’m going to be thinking about Khadra and Hassan for weeks. Absolutely obsessed!!! 😭🔥📚
As someone who absolutely loves romance, Beyond the Sidelines checked all my boxes and then some! I’m obsessed with stories that combine love, personal growth, and just the right amount of drama—and this novel delivers all that with a soccer-filled twist.
Khadra is such a relatable protagonist. Her quiet strength and vulnerability won my heart from the first chapter, and seeing her journey unfold alongside Hassan, the charismatic soccer star, was pure magic. The slow-burn tension between them was so well done, and every interaction crackled with chemistry. Hassan is the perfect blend of confident and tender, and the way he supports Khadra while navigating his own insecurities was so touching.
I also loved the focus on family dynamics, culture, and identity. Khadra's overprotective brother Khalid made me laugh and shake my head (classic older brother vibes), and her relationship with her family added so much depth to her character.
But let’s talk about the romance again—because WOW. The way their relationship builds, layer by layer, with moments of banter, heartfelt conversations, and swoon-worthy gestures, made me feel all the feels. The pumpkin muffin scene? Perfection. And that ending? Absolute chef’s kiss.
If you love romance novels that are heartfelt, diverse, and filled with lovable characters you can root for, Beyond the Sidelines is a must-read. I can’t wait to reread it and dive into whatever I. Farah writes next! 😍⚽📚
Beyond the Sidelines by I. Farah is such a heartwarming and beautifully written story that I honestly don’t even know how to describe it properly—it’s THAT good. Khadra and Hassan’s journey had me hooked from the first chapter, and I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it (and then I immediately wanted to reread it 😭📚).
The romance? PERFECTION. 🥺💍 It’s such a slow burn, but every interaction between them had me squealing and clutching my heart. Hassan is just 🥵✨—the way he supports and believes in Khadra even when she doubts herself is everything. And Khadra? She’s so strong and relatable, trying to chase her dreams while navigating her identity and struggles.
I also LOVED the subtle but rich Somali cultural elements woven throughout the story—everything from family ties to the sense of community felt so authentic and meaningful. ❤️✨ It’s not just a romance; it’s a story about love, self-discovery, and healing.
If you’re looking for a halal love story with depth, amazing characters, and moments that will leave you crying (happy tears AND sad ones 🥲💘), Beyond the Sidelines is IT. Definitely one of my all-time favorite books, and I cannot WAIT to read more from I. Farah!!
I absolutely adored Beyond the Sidelines! The chemistry between Hassan and Khadra is everything—deep, layered, and so beautifully written. Hassan’s journey from a global soccer icon to rediscovering himself back in his small hometown was so heartfelt. You can’t help but root for him as he navigates the tension with his family and confronts his past.
And Khadra? She’s such a relatable and inspiring character. I loved her quiet strength, her love of stories, and the way she balances her own dreams while dealing with her complicated feelings for Hassan. The slow-burn romance between them had me hooked—the little moments, the shared history, and the way they bring out the best in each other were just perfect.
The writing is so vivid that it makes you feel like you’re right there in the town of Uxbridge, experiencing all the small, emotional moments with the characters. The mix of romance, family, and self-discovery is handled so well, and I couldn’t put the book down.
If you love stories with second chances, meaningful relationships, and a romance that feels real and earned, this one is a must-read!
Let me say this khadra was so real 😩 her love for books and her dream of writing her own book. omg, she is so like me, and the fact that she's a Somali character adds to it.
Hassan is the sweetest character ever. Green forest. I loved how supportive he's for her ughhh I was swooning blushing over this guy. This guy was wholesome. I don't wanna spoil it for you guys, so u should just go and see it for yourself.
My favourite quotes
Anytime,” I replied, squeezing back. “I’ll take you to every bookstore and buy every series you want. But only if you promise to keep looking at me like that.” 🧎♀️🧎♀️🧎♀️🧎♀️🧎♀️ I was screaming at this scene last night .
. Each time we passed a bookstore, Hassan would give me a knowing nudge. “Go on, bookworm. Don’t worry, I’ll stand outside in the cold and guard the door while you get lost for the next three hours.” I have no words. This guy is the standard
He raised an eyebrow, his teasing grin widening. “A scene? Do you think buying five copies of my wife’s book is making a scene?” He crossed his arms, feigning serious contemplation. “I was thinking ten, actually. One for every room.” A proud 👏 husband.
A sweet feel good book about a chai loving librarian and a star football player. Made me smile and I would 100% recommend this book for a read.
SPOILER: My only issue with the book is that the male character was supposed to have a history of flings and breakups in the past, this is only mentioned in passing once or twice before the girls brother rejects him for this very reason. He also claims to have changed to convince her brother, however since we never even explored it as an issue to begin with, let alone any sign of "change" this doesn't flow. Note that there is a development with the main dudes relationship with his father but this is shown more in the form of an abrupt "I'm sorry son for I have sinned" conversation and immediate forgiveness with no buildup or so. Had these developments been explored and the change unravel (be it in a subtle or dramatic form) in line with the story plot rather than convenient words or events I would have LOVED the book. For now though I'm still glad I read it and will save it as one I enjoyed

This book is EVERYTHING. Not only is the story itself amazing, but the Muslim representation is done so beautifully. Khadra’s faith is such a natural part of her life—it’s not overexplained or stereotyped, just woven into who she is. From her prayers to her family dynamics, it felt so authentic and relatable.
And Hassan? The way his struggles with identity, success, and family are explored through his journey felt so real. His connection to his roots and the tension between his faith and the pressures of fame were handled with so much care.
This isn’t just a love story; it’s a story about faith, family, and finding yourself. As a Muslim reader, seeing characters like Khadra and Hassan felt so validating. If you’re looking for a book that captures the complexities of life while celebrating Muslim identity, THIS is it.
Well written and poignant. Khadra resilience and hassan never give up attitude are worth lauding for. I also learned some Somali language terms. The beauty of Toronto and London is amazingly described. Loved the characters and the story line. The epilogue was captivating and I read till the last. I love the blend of news article and fans comments in the book. It felt fresh. The bookworm meets the football star gives this book unique theme with a perfect balance of culture, career, family and love. Very Sweet and light heartening read with quotable and evocative tone. Kudos to author farah for writing this amazing poignant tale with strong characters and a fresh perspective of modern love 💖. Highly recommend this book to book lovers & people who enjoy writing or love reading contemporary Romance.
A soft, swoon-worthy romance that stays true to Islamic values while delivering all the feels. The slow-burn tension had me hooked, and the way the characters connected was so genuine and heartwarming.
A bookish librarian and a soccer star? Say no more—I’m obsessed! Their worlds couldn’t be more different, yet the way they find common ground and build something real is beautifully done. Add in the rich cultural representation, and it’s the kind of story that makes you want to hug the book when you’re done.
If you’re craving a thoughtful, feel-good romance that still gives you butterflies, this is it. I can’t stop thinking about it!
*3 stars* This was obviously different from the dark books I usually read. I picked this one up, since, it is the month of Ramadan. I completely admire how the characters were so full of respect for each other, that they didn’t purposely hurt each other. Might I say it was so very ‘halal’of them. 😝 Why I didn’t give 5 stars ? Super cheesy writing. I wasn’t a fan of the writing format. It was repetitive and often felt like a 5th grader wrote it bcoz of this I struggled to finish the book. Overall, the storyline was good sorta, it wasn’t over the top.
I’m SCREAMING. CRYING. KICKING MY FEET. This book was everything—brother’s best friend?? Slow burn?? Tiny glances and YEARS of buried feelings?? YES PLEASE. Khadra is such a relatable main character—quiet, dreamy, holding so much in. And Hassan?? The way he LOOKS at her when he finally sees her?? I MELTED. This gave me butterflies and broke my heart at the same time. I want to re-read it immediately.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This book got me in my feelings. The slow burn? So real. The tension? I was screaming. Hassan is the soccer star trying to figure life out, and Khadra is the bookish girl who’s loved him forever but never said a word. Brother’s best friend. Small town. So much yearning. I couldn’t put it down—literally stayed up way too late reading. Loved it.
I really wanted to like this, but it felt like someone writing a fanfiction of someone they saw themselves fancying. The relationship didn't come off as realistic, so when it progressed, it felt strange and a bit disjointed. I don't regret reading it, but I won't be going out of my way to read it again.
i honestly didn’t see what everyone was hyping about. I just had a really hard time reading this book and finishing it. A lot of things also didnt make sense to me. I was cringing a lot and it just reminded me of wattpad books but not the good ones
