A desperate woman. A reluctant hero. A marriage born of honor—and shadowed by danger.Newly widowed, and not by accident, Helena is desperate and afraid. The man who keeps trying to buy the mercantile and freighter business she ran with her husband won’t be satisfied until he gets them—and her. She’s refused until now but won’t be able to for much longer. There’s not a soul to help her, and she’s not even sure if the letter she sent with a plea for help will be answered. How can she keep herself safe?
Isaac has been feeling restless. He’s not sure his life’s purpose is to continue to be a ranch hand, but he likes his boss, is friends with him. So, when his boss and his wife ask him to do a favor—one that not only will give him a change of scenery, but potentially a dangerous adventure—he says yes, not fully realizing what he’s getting into.
After accidentally putting Helena into a compromising position, there’s only one thing Isaac can do. Marry her. But when he does, it will paint a giant target on his back, and Helena will never forgive herself if something happens to him when the man after her pays a call.
***Mail-Order Freighter: Hopeful Husbands*** by Paulette D. Marshall is an exhilarating read that gripped me from the very first page. Packed with action and just the right amount of suspense, it kept me on the edge of my seat and eager to turn each page.
Helena, a resilient widow, bravely navigates the challenges of a male-dominated world as she takes the reins of her late husband's freight business. Enter Isaac, whose best friend and employer persuades him to lend his support to Helena. What follows is a captivating whirlwind of events and emotions as they confront a ruthless adversary determined to sabotage everything she has worked for.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling story of perseverance and courage. You won’t be able to put it down!
The story is part of the Honorable/Healing/Hopeful Husbands, a multi-author series. Each story is a stand-alone and can be read in any order. These are clean, Western historical tales in which mitigating circumstances result in couples seeking a mail-order spouse.
Helena is doing the best she can to survive since the death of her husband, Thad, a month ago. She is running their mercantile, but every time she tries to hire someone to run the freighter service, there is an accident or death. The store is running low on supplies, and the town bully, Boris Blackheart, is trying to take over her business and her. She needs help, and even considers finding a mail-order groom. She will write her friends, Malcolm and Ester, in Nevada, and let them know what she is up against. She will also write and answer a mail-order ad.
“Loney, respectable, hardworking young man. Age twenty-six. I have dark brown hair and brown eyes. I have all my teeth. Never married. Looking for a Christian wife. I am willing to travel. She must be even tempered and able to cook. Isaac.”
Isaac Jackson works for Malcolm, who will approach him about doing a favor, going to Rocky Springs, Colorado, and taking Helena's supplies and protecting her. Malcolm will involve several marshals in what is happening and get them to offer backup support.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people and takes place in 1880. It will bring Isaac and Helena together. He goes to take her supplies, but is also there for support. When he sees Boris manhandling her, that is when he knows he will be staying. After Boris slaps her and is shot, when the doctor comes to check on her, he suggests they marry, and the preacher backs it up, for her reputation. There will be several others who come to the aid of Isaac and Helena, including a married couple, Sassy and Victor Lorenzo.
Sometimes in life, making a change is the best decision. I liked a phrase used in the story as Isaac and Helena discuss what the future will hold for them—to stay where they are, for them to leave Colorado and go to Nevada, or maybe even to a new area, Arkansas.
“I think we should pray on it and ask the Lord to guide us. I must admit that going to Arkansas does sound appealing. We might want to take a trip to visit before we make up our minds. Hopefully, God will shut the doors that he doesn’t want us to go through.”
Mail-Order Freighter is a horrifying story of a man back in 1880 that is like the mafia is in our time. He and his hired men take what they want at whatever cost to the town. Boris killed Helena’s husband as he wants her, her mercantile store, and the freight company. She prayed for help to arrive as the supplies for the town was running out and Boris was making sure none got to town. But Helena had a great set of friends that put an ad in the newspaper to set their ranch hand up hopefully with Helena. When they received the letter from Helena telling them how hard her life had become they knew this ranch hand was a Christian man and would make a good person to be with Helena. Isaac agreed to bring in a load of supplies and the U.S. Marshall that was in the town over from Helena where they were getting the supplies agreed to drive an additional load of supplies. The Marshall had scoped out the trail before hand and it saved their lives. Once they made it to Helena’s they helped unload the supplies and left Isaac to help out Helena. When he arrived and seen Boris hurting Helena she shot him in the leg as Isaac shot him in his back, not to kill but to put down. They were hoping that the help they were promised would come back arriving in time. But when news comes that Isaac being there with Helena is spoiling her virtue he married her that afternoon. Could a marriage done out of necessity survive when Helena had only been a widow one month and had not even had time to grieve his loss due to the constant worry and frequent visits from Boris?
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a clean historical Mail-Order Husband romance book and part of the Honorable Husbands series. The main characters are Isaac and Helena. Helena is a widow who runs a mercantile and freighter business by herself. Helena is having trouble with a man in town and reaches out to some friends of hers. Isaac ends up going to help Helena when her friends ask him to. Isaac believes it is Gods plan for him to go help Helena. Once there will things get better? Will they end up getting married? Will they fall in love. God has a plan. I love how amazing Isaac was to Helena. The praying and mentions of God throughout the book was amazing. I loved all of the side characters. The suspense was great. I loved the ending. Overall, I loved this book.
I enjoyed the book! Helena’s husband died and left her to run the mercantile. However, the town bully wanted the store and Helena. Helena did not want this to happen. Isaac worked for Helena’s friend and husband. They convinced Isaac to go help Helena. They needed to marry because Helena’s reputation would suffer. The town bully did not like this! There is a lot of drama and action in the book. This is a clean wholesome book where the characters rely on their Christian faith. I highly recommend reading this book!
Mail Order Freighter will get you from the first page. Helena has lost her husband and doesn’t want to lose her business. The bully in town, Boris wants everything, including Helena. She needs help and everyone in town is afraid of Boris. Even if they could help, they are too afraid. Helena, doesn’t know how much time she has left, so she tells her friend, Ester what is happening. Before long, help arrives in Issac. Can this be the help she prayed to God for and can he protect them all.
Isaac took such sweet, tender care of Helena. Protecting her from a horrible man who was obsessed with her. I also loved that Isaac was a man of prayer. Good story!
I’m pretty sure that Isaac never dreamed doing his boss and friend a favor was going to end up with him being married, but the very ideals that made him the perfect person to send to help Helena were the same ones that caused him to offer marriage. Helena is being harassed by a local man who wants her businesses and her. I really enjoyed this story.
Boris is a big man and a big bully, who takes whatever he wants, even if it means killing people. Helena happens to be the woman he has his eye on and he happened to be sure her husband died. Right before Thad died, Helena started suspecting that she was with child. Thad never got to know. Helena prays, prays, and prays for God to send a strong, brave man into her life to help her. Her friends send Isaac to help her, and the minute he gets to her mercantile (with a new friend, a U.S. Marshall and one of HIS friends), he finds Boris with Helena trapped in a corner, and he is trying to force himself on her. He goes straight into protective husband mode and runs Boris off. The two are drawn to each other in a way that could only be God’s moving in both of their hearts! What a wonderful story. You need to read it and savor each page, just as I did! I received an early copy and it is available for preorder now! 📕♥️
Another book in the series Hopeful Husbands- collection of books by various authors. All stand alone any every one I think you will want to read.
A wonderful inspirational romance one that Helena thought would never happen after losing her husband in an "accident". She's being bullied by Boris, whom seems to think Helena is his. Will she give in and marry him or will she send an ad for a Mail-Order Husband???
