Michelle Emerson, author, says "Wow, what a fantastic story! It drew me in right from the start. Simply magical."

Little Bank Vole is part of the Copse Council, along with Pine Marten, Rabbit, Badger, Squirrel, Muntjac Deer, Owl and Mole. All eight members have a duty to instil peace and order in the woods they live in. Fortunately for them, this was achieved by a previous council. Harmony has prevailed, so all the current members have to do is maintain the status quo. It's an easy job, until a strange beast arrives. Loud, disruptive and unfamiliar, they immediately decide it can't stay. They need someone to confront it and force it to leave. Nobody wants to do it, they're all afraid of the creature by the river. Except Bank Vole, apparently.

He agrees to take on the task... but it's because he has a secret motive. The woodland animals have recently learnt about evolution and he's now convinced his species can live more fulfilling lives. He's on a mission to help them advance and believes squaring up to the beast could help achieve this. What he doesn't realise, however, is that the beast also has a wild pursuit and if it's successful, it could change all of their lives forever...

This fantasy novel is filled with adventure, romance, mystery. It's a book for 10+ to adults.

Enjoy!

It took me a moment to get into it, because the style is quite unusual. These days we don't come across many books with an omniscient, authoritative narrator who can see in all of the characters minds and at times even breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader directly. But once I got over the initially unfamiliar feel to it, this turned out to be a wonderful read with interesting characters and character dynamics.

The woodland animals in the story have developed their own sort of society and rules and expectations to make sure that they all get along and also stay safe from humans. So when a new animal arrives from the river and behaves differently and has different ideas many of them struggle to accept her. This is just one of many scenes and situations in this book where we can see ourselves or possibly the people around us reflected in those animals. Our main character bank vole is struggling with his stage in life, which means that he has separated from his offspring as well as his mating partner. But he is hoping for something more, and as a reader you can't help but feel for him.

All in all, this is a lovely story, at times tense (like during the race or when I was seriously questioning a certain animal's motivation) and at times incredibly heart-warming (I mean who would have thought two little bank voles declaring their love for each other would make me feel more than most actual romance books I've read?!).

Although bank vole's arch has come to an end with this book, I'm hoping that the questions and new adventures teased towards the end will mean that there is a second book in store for us ;)
If you are looking for something unique, something with a different style, something that will make you think and feel, I recommend giving this heartfelt story a try

This book is straight-up magical! *An Exceptional Aura* takes us into a woodland run by the Copse Council—a quirky group of animals like Bank Vole, Badger, and Pine Marten, who are all about keeping peace. But when a strange (and super intimidating) beast shows up, everything changes. Nobody’s brave enough to face it… except Bank Vole, who’s got a secret mission of his own. Spoiler alert: this isn’t just about scaring off a creature; it’s about evolution, courage, and shaking things up.

Bank Vole is *such* a standout character—he’s bold, ambitious, and kinda sneaky (in the best way). The whole cast of woodland creatures adds so much charm and personality, from the wise Owl to the reluctant Squirrel. Plus, the story doesn’t just stay cute and fluffy—it dives into some deep stuff, like growth, change, and figuring out what it really means to "evolve."

What I loved most is how this book mixes genres. It’s got adventure, mystery, even a little romance—and somehow, it all flows together perfectly. Frances Dolan’s writing feels like a warm hug with a side of “Wow, I didn’t think about it that way before.” The twists and turns keep you hooked, and the ending? Totally satisfying.

Fans of *The Wind in the Willows* and *Animal Farm*, this one’s for you. It’s got that same heartwarming charm but with a fresh and modern vibe. Whether you’re 10 or 100, this story will have you cheering for Bank Vole and rethinking what it means to take risks for something bigger.
