Hol Horse is entrusted with finding a missing parrot and takes Boingo to Morioh. In the unfamiliar town, Hol Horse is haunted by a sudden vision of DIO and nearly struck by a car barreling down the street, but is saved from danger by another Stand user—a young man with a pompadour and a school uniform…
Kōhei Kadono (上遠野浩平 or Kouhei Kadono) is a Japanese author, best known for the Boogiepop series, which has also been adapted as a live action movie, manga and anime.
Although not written by Araki himself, this catches the vibe of Jojo’s perfectly. It’s also really cool to see characters from Part 3 and Part 4 interact a bit. Intrigued to see where this goes.
In this spin-off series, we are returning to Morioh with a blend of characters from Parts 3 and 4 to try and tie off some threads that Dio’s actions left loose.
This first volume has a pretty good vibe to it. We’ve got a pretty nice core cast of characters—Jotaro, Hol Horse, Boingo + Kakyoin’s cousin. Stand nonsense abounds as well. It’s a very standard Jojo tale.
What I’m most impressed by in this story is how Dio haunts the narrative. (To be fair, I guess he haunts all of Jojo.) Dio traumatized all of these characters in different ways and it’s clear that trauma still impacts them. Having actually worked for Dio, Hol Horse is probably the most straightforwardly traumatized while characters like Jotaro and Kakyoin’s cousin are experiencing more secondhand trauma. That adds several layers of nuance to this story which I think overall elevates it above a lot of its contemporaries.
Anyway.
If you’re a Jojo fan, you’ll probably enjoy this one. It’s always so delightfully nostalgic to get to go on another adventure with these characters from a few chapters back~
So this book is just pure Jojo fan fiction. If you have finished Stardust Crusaders and are at least familiar with Diamond is Unbreakable it’s worth a read, but it won’t make sense to new comers. And that’s kind of my criticism with the book, the only audience that this book is for is for people who’ve read Stardust Crusaders.
I didn't realize how little I knew about this series until I see that this isn't even the original story, but a SPIN-OFF SERIES OMG
I'll read this and then hopefully find the original story and read that :'V
anyway I'm done now and it was pretty good even though I didn't know what was going on, but even as my first exposure to jojo's at all, I sorta get the story from the spin-off and I think that Hol Horse and Mariah are cuties <3 so excited to read the rest of the series!!
this fucking ruled. i was wondering why it was surprisingly introspective for a jojo spinoff and these side characters now got to have more personality + depth and then i realized that this is the same author that wrote purple haze feedback, my other fave. yay yippee and even kakyoin is plot relevant again oh i ate this shit up
I think "Stardust Crusaders" and "Diamond is Unbreakable" are the best series in the Jojo's universe, so I enjoyed the first volume in this crossover of the two. I'll likely buy the other volumes some day.
blonde bisexual baddie continues to traumatize cowthey from beyond the grave using a parrot with superpowers, so he enlists help from a boy with hair the shape of a baked ham whose poses are so cunty that the screen literally shakes when he hits them in the anime. 🤠 P.S. why was hol horse so hot in this does this artist have a crush on him?
I'm using this as a review of all three volumes, as they are short.
This story serves as an epilogue for the character of Hol Horse from Stardust Crusaders, but also as a prequel for Josuke from Diamond is Unbreakable. The problem with Josuke is that he adds nothing to the story. Prequel characters cannot experience any real character development and thus do not fit with the themes of trauma and redemption. I have heard complaints that Kōhei Kadono and Tasuku Karasuma do not try to mimic the art and writing of Araki, but I think this is one of the book's strengths. Doing so would be in vein. I actually would have preferred if they stayed focused on developing Hol Horse as a solo protagonist and working on their own original concepts.
The Hol Horse we see here is a melanocholic quiet character that might seem out of place in a typical Jojo story, but as an epilogue, it seems natural that he would be somber and reflective. It is a big mistake conceptually to have Kakyoin's cousin interact primarily with Josuke when it could be argued Hol Horse's crimes had a direct contribution to her trauma. We miss out on a lot of potentially meaningful character interactions to have flashbacks and extended cameos that add nothing. So when the characters themselves are strong, their dynamics are undercooked. Specifically, Hol Horse's relationship to the other Part 3 characters should have been the primary focus.
The antagonist's ability is to store one person's memories and force another to re-experience them. This is sometimes used effectively to explore guilt and trauma, but also serves as a tool for the writers to insert various flashbacks to fan favourite chapters. A side effect of this excessive fan service is that it effects the story structurally. Characters are often split up for the purpose of falling victim to this ability. Thus, time is spent displaying memories that could have been used to develop present day relationships. While it is cool for Josuke to see Dio, it adds absolutely nothing to the story and kills all momentum. Some of the most tense arcs in the franchise span fewer chapters, so I think they could have used their time more effectively here.
The town of Morioh is also not fully realized and could have been replaced with any metropolitan setting. Perhaps by having Hol Horse become a talked about spectacle in the town they could have allowed for more interaction and exploration. Ideally, however, I would have just had the story take place elsewhere.
I don't mean to sound overly negative about this story. I did enjoy getting to see many of my favorite characters again. It wraps up strongly and is a sweet goodbye to these characters, but I just can't help thinking about the wasted potential. Only after 16 chapters do Hol Horse and Josuke begin to develop a fun rapport, but then they separate never to meet again. I would enjoy if they continued with a solo Hol Horse manga that follows up on the more underdeveloped concepts here. Many do not respect Jojo stories that are not written by Araki, but I think there is a lot room for fun and exploration if the stories serve as more than Jojo greatest hits collections.
Ele perde aqui o carisma todo e é só "ooh spooky guy, very evil and mean and scary!!".
As someone else had already stated, the storyline feels like the plot of a fan-fiction found ao3. Hol Horse traveling to Morioh with Oingo Boingo and teaming up with Josuke to recover Pet Shop is a crossover fan-fic someone has to have written. This has the classic Jojo’s style and writing. It made the book feel like a subplot straight out of the original series.
Slight spoiler warning: I really enjoyed that this part delved into the PTSD faced by the surviving stand users that worked under Dio. Obviously that would leave some unresolved feelings. I really liked that Hol Horse was also affected by this trauma despite describing himself as “tough”. I loved the way he tried to justify his disregardment of his own trauma by comparing his situation to others. I am also glad that they have shown the repercussions from Kakyion’s death. Like he was a Japanese student who magically ended up dead in Egypt. I like that his cousin is shown looking for answers to his death. It makes his death feel more meaningful than just figuring out Dio’s power. As Kakyion was my favorite character of the Stardust Crusaders, it was fun to see him brought up again.
The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is fanservice, and honestly it's not more than the average comic. Otherwise, the story has me hooked (though, I am partial to it because JJBA Part3 is my absolute favourite and Part4 is a close second), I love the dynamic between the main characters, including the new one, Ryoko Kakyoin, the artstyle is great too (I love how the artist draws expressions, specially in Hol Horse and Ryoko). Truly, I had a great time reading!!
The way it portrays the characters from Part3 (not just Hol Horse but Mariah and Boingo) is surprisingly good! It shows how they feel towards the past and reveals their perspective of DIO. The way the story starts off because of details from Part3 is great, and genuinely feels like some connection and revelatikn Araki himself would make! I'm surprisingly a lot more hooked to the plot and sincerely feel for Ryoko's search for the truth regarding Noriaki. I love her character so far!! The art I had seen of her before made her look a little weak(?) but I genuinely think I will absolute love her (more than I do). Also, her dynamic with Josuke is fun so far. Josuke and Hol Horse interacting is something I never thought Ivd witness, and also something I never thought I'd love to see!

Who finished Stardust Crusader’s and didn’t want more Hol Horse? If you say you did, you’re a clown and a sucker 🤡🍭 If I don’t like a gunslingin’ gentleman like Hol Horse, then my name ain’t lksreads. Boingo is here too, which I truthfully don’t care about too much… I just care about Boingo’s fortune-telling Stand, Tohth, which is playing a large role for the cousin of our never-forgotten Jo-bro, Noriaki Kakyoin. 🥹
Kind of expected trash and was very pleasantly surprised. This writer is clearly a big fan and “gets” it. The characters are very much themselves and the tone is very much that of a bizarre, Joestar adventure. Outside of the Stand hunt, the elements of shame and fear of Dio’s former rule is a really fun story to tell through Hol Horse. Between his flashbacks of Dio and the Joestar party and the campy feel of Morioh, there’s a lot to enjoy in this book so far.

Was worried this was gonna be a fan service cash grab, but to my surprise they are actually doing something here.
The themes this spinoff is focusing on is dealing with the aftermath of something terrible. Hol Horse is still scared of his old master even though he died a decade ago, and Ryon Ryon is still grieving the loss of his cousin who fought DIO. The enemy stand’s ability is to put people under its mind control to reenact the past, which fits perfectly with the themes.
I’m interested to see what they’ll do with the next volume.
3.5⭐️

Heck yea! I loved this! I was a little tiny bit hesitatent at first since it wasn't written by Araki, but this was great! The new author copied the writing/art style well! I also liked that Kakyoin's cousin is in this, showing his family since we never saw them before and to bring them closure. Hol Horse and Josuke is also a fun dynamic. I definitly want to read more of this series in the future!
Really cool concept but it moves very quickly so it’s kinda hard to follow entirely at point but it’s also literally just an official fanfic of two of my favorite characters. tbh it really could be canon if you just change the first issue of part 4 to josuke knowing about dio and stands
This was shorter than I realized it would be but I’m already hooked. I had NO idea that the girl in this was going to be related to Kakyoin—so that was a very welcoming surprise! Hol Horse, Josuke, and Ryoko teaming up is going to be a fun ride!
