It's been fifteen years since former boyband member and wine vineyard heir Phillip Firecracker retreated from the spotlight. Since then, he's been happy enough living out the rest of his days as a recluse, with only his murderous tabby, and unpaid intern -slash- best (only) friend for companionship. When his former band members reunite without Phillip, publicly snubbing him, Phillip vows to upstage them. That's where Nostalgia Nation (America's #17 source for D-list reality TV) comes in.
When production for a seven-episode streaming series sends Phillip back to his hometown to grand marshal the annual Muscadine Madness fair, his career comeback takes a backseat. Now, his only goal is avoiding Mayor Rivers Rivera, the (alleged) man behind a homophobic prank that led to Phillip’s being crowned 2001’s Muscadine Queen. Unfortunately, with Rivers being mayor, number one local talk talk show host, organizer of this year’s fair, and Phillip’s one-man welcome wagon, that’s going to be a bit tricky.
With drama severely lacking, Phillip is given no choice. If he wants this show to be a success, he’s going to have to resort to something tried and true. Like a comeback, everyone loves a love story, even if it’s with the one man Phillip has no desire to associate with. When an old childhood flame begins to crackle, Phillip realizes he’s going to have to make a choice. His comeback, or his mayor.
The County Fair Queen is a single-POV, low-heat, slow burn. Heavy humor. Heavy heart. Slightly unhinged.
Lance Lansdale is the author of F**k, Marry, Kill Me, Daddy. He's a sucker for gay romance and devours far more audiobooks than one ought. Texan by blood (Louisianan by circumstance), his stories take place in small towns with quirky side characters.
You can email him at lancelansdalewrites@gmail.com or visit his website at www.lancelansdale.com
Lance Lansdale has become one of my favourite writers. His murder daddy series is a chaotic unhinged-ness and I’m all for that hot mess. Lance’s writing is hilarious and this book doesn’t disappoint. Omg I love his obsession with mentioning Lisa Rinna in his books. I loved her on Days of Our Lives as Billie . Anyway I’m digressing…
This book, although set in the universe of murder daddies , sadly has no character cameos. (Although there is blink and you’ll miss it mention of Tate and Scotty ) It’s a bit lighter of a read with only one love scene.
"A twink, a tyrant, and a homicidal cat walk into a janitor’s closet. That’s not a joke. Do you know why it’s not a joke?" "For God’s sake. Here we go," I said. "Because I’m not laughing, Phillip."
Phillip is a former boy bander of ‘FriendZone’ , the biggest selling boyband of the 2000’s. He’s back home in Tallulah filming a docuseries about his return.
Rivers Rivera - the boy who ran. The Mayor of Talulah, Texas.
These two have history. Rivers seems regretful of what happened in their shared past and I think he would love a second chance with Phillip.
Talulah is full of the typical American small town quirky characters and I just want to know- are American small towns like the books and movies, where everyone knows everyone and eccentric people abound??
The production crew of the docuseries wants Philllip and Rivers to be in a fake romantic relationship.
Ooh River tells Phillip something private and .. I think Philiip is still wearing a microphone for the docuseries and this could definitely backfire. That television producer seems ruthless.
“I stared at Rivers, and for the first time since returning, I saw the same boy from all those years ago. The fear in his eyes. The panic in his soul. That undeniable sound of ‘run-run-run’ echoing inside of him.”
An ensemble of heartwarming characters will be found in these pages.
Jordan , Phillips assistant and hot for Phillips dad Preston.
Preston is a grumpy son of a gun but he is capable of having warm fuzzy feelings.
Beau - Rivers son. This kid is sassy and really out there. He’s a big fan of Phillips. As in president of his fan club big.
“Beau Rivera: child icon and pig wrangler extraordinaire. “
Phillip and Rivers have sweet and sexy chemistry.
"What you said the other day, about me not noticing you when we were younger," he said. "Yeah?" "I noticed you, Phillip." A rush of warmth fluttered across his cheeks. "I noticed you a lot."
It’s a full circle moment. The county fair queen and her heartbroken king. The two weeks are up and Phillip is leaving.
Don’t worry this book has a happily ever after.
"And this is… what? Your way of making sure I can’t say no. I mean, I’m not sure I would say no, because you’re probably the love of my life, but God, Riv. I need you to pace yourself. You’re unhinged."
Awwww - all the feels and laughs. A delicious and delightful book. Never let them steal your sparkle!
This was awesome. I just laughed throughout the whole book, it was hilarious. Phillip didn't want to came back home but he had to. He had not so good memories of the past and in the center of them was Rivers. They both liked each other when they were younger but things happened and they didn't gave each other a chance. Phillip tries hard to resist Rivers but there is no use, he loved him, he never stopped. Rivers was so excited for Phillip coming back. For him, it was finally their chance. He loved Phillip, it was so obvious, anyone could see it. They made an awesome couple and I loved their journey. (I really need Preston and Jordan's book)
God, this book was so heartwarming and funny. No one else besides Lance Lansdale can have me in tears one moment and hysterically laughing the next. I was charmed by the characters in this book, especially the MCs, Phillip and Rivers. I was sucked into this fantastically fun and funny world within the first few pages. Seriously, this was wonderful. Phillip and Rivers constantly had me swooning. Just loved them to pieces. It was a JOY to watch their connection strengthen and their relationship blossom (even though Phillip was so hesitant to set himself up for potential heartbreak). I'm so happy I read this.
Oh this book 😊 talk about giving me non-stop warm fuzzy feels with just enough roaring-laughter moments to catch me off-guard 😂
Now I've been reading some really dark or really messed up things lately. It's been all blood kink/BDSM/murder-Daddy (😉)... None of the 'nice' stuff so my headspace has been on the wrong side of the fence for a loooong time. And I did think I'd struggle (on a personal level) to read something that's quite innocent but I really didn't. I fell in to this so easily and I cannot tell you how many times I smiled, laughed and 'aww'd' through it. I loved the slow burn of it too and the pace was perfect. I really did need this to put a smile on my face 💜
This book focuses on Phillip, an ex Popstar that can't actually sing who comes back to his home town to record a (very crap) reality TV show to try and kick start his career again. Now, when I say this guy is hilarious I mean he is HILARIOUS!! He's completely OTT in situations, lives for the drama and is just an amazing character to read. He's funny, slightly egotistical but so petrified of messing things up again that you can't help but love him and root for everything to work out for him. Hand on my heart, I had no idea what was going to come out of his mouth next 😂. I loved the way he was with Rivers, the denial over feelings that were still there and he couldn't even trick himself into believing was brilliant.
When Philip arrives back home he instantly meets his school crush and not-nemesis-but-thinks-he-is-his-nemesis (who just also happens to be mayor and the SWEETEST) guy ever. So, naturally, he falls for him all over again. Rivers is just.... *dreamy sigh* 😊 and I couldn't help but root for this guy from the start. I absolutely adored him, he's like a bloody labradoodle and I just want to bury my face in all his fluffyness. Loved him. In fact, the more I talk/type about him the more I love him!
Special shout out to the side characters too. In traditional Lance Lansdale style he includes everyone in this book and Beau, Brenda-Carole and Jordan (my official non-romantic soulmate. Hands off, he's mine!) just captured my entire heart and soul. Each had their own individual parts to this book which all interlinked with the main plot absolutely perfectly.
Overall, amazing book. It was exactly what I wanted, so much more than I was expecting (that sounds like I'm being negative but I'm really not!) and was just gorgeous to read.
100% recommend this to everyone!! 💜💜
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
This is my first book by Lance Lansdale, and I’m convinced he could become one of my favorite MM writers! He has a quirky way of writing characters with so much personality and poise that I couldn’t stop feeling their emotions. And oh, how I felt for Phillip. The things he had to endure—things most would consider harmless—felt monumental to me. (Imagine having to lie about being a good singer for ten years!) Being a disappointment to your father, your hometown, and even yourself... I was surprised he wasn’t more depressed than he actually was.
As for the romance, the second-chance aspect was a slow burn—but wow, did it burn! I’m usually not a fan of second-chance romances, but this one was so sweet and heartfelt.
All in all, this book was everything it needed to be: funny, deep at times, witty, romantic, and with a happily ever after. What more could I ask for?
This is a fake dating/reality tv show to more romance, featuring Phillip Firecracker and Rivers Rivera, and is standalone book.
Phillip was part of a boyband in the naughties, his career took a nosedive when he was launching his solo career and it came out he is not the best singer. Years later, he is looking for a comeback and his assistant, Jordan, talks him into the idea of a reality tv show set in his home town. A place he escaped from when he finished high school.
Rivers went to high school with Phillip. He had a crush on Phillip but was so scared to act on it and limited his interactions with him, especially after what happened at the Country Fair. Now that Phillip is coming back home to film a reality tv show, it might just be his second chance to make up for trying to ignore him and get act on his feelings.
Okay, first off, ALL THE STARS, this book is so flipping hilarious! I laughed out loud all the way through it, I couldn’t help myself. The dialogue, the internal thoughts, everything the characters, both main and secondary, do had me giggling.
Phillip is one of a kind. I loved how eccentric he was and his interactions with everyone had me laughing so hard I had to reread chapters because I needed to really take in what was happening.
Rivers and his son were so frigging cute. Rivers signing up to fake date Phillip was kind of a dream come true for him, he gave him an excuse to get close to Phillip, And Omg his son Beau - he idolised Phillip. That whole part of the storyline had me in stitches and was so sweet.
And then there is Jordan, Phillip’s best friend and assistant, and his absolute obsession with Phillip’s dad. Gold!!!!! Jordy and Phillip’s codependent relationship was perfection.
This book is a slow burn, low angst, light, hilarious read. I cannot recommend this book enough. I think it’s one of the funniest books I’ve read all year. Lance has such a fantastic writing style, it’s so witty, don’t miss out on reading this one.
Things to expect in this book are: Standalone book MM romance Single POV Small town festival Ex Boybander x Mayor Pet cat & pet piglets Reality TV show Fake dating Single dad & sassy son Slow burn & low angst Childhood crush Hilarious writing Found family HEA
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 4.5 hearts After being snubbed by his band members, Phillip undertakes a publicity tour of his own that puts him in the unenviable hands of promoters whose end goals were not necessarily the same as Phillips. Along the way, Phillip encounters the one man he never wanted to see again – the one who ran away, making Phillip a laughingstock. Mayor Rivers Rivera and Phillip have much to sort out - can a nine-year-old boy be the catalyst to their future happiness. This story is one that I looked forward to reading, then 25% in, I wasn’t sure about it. But in the end, I really enjoyed it. The tale is told in the first person from Phillip's single viewpoint. Note - the blurb says that the story is a touch unhinged, and YES, in places, it totally is. Between the reality show's on-the-edge director who engineers drama, homelife, whacky town inhabitants, and the screwed-up past between Phillip and Rivers, unhinged just about covers it. There were times when I wondered if this was going to be one of those stories where Rivers was an angel, and Phillip was a man who, in the eyes of world, would never get it right, while others conspire against him, and there are some of those instances – but stick with it. Phillip is a man where – if sarcasm were an Olympic sport, he’d be an outright gold medalist. I love sarcasm, but just as I wondered if it was getting too much, Phillip had one of those revealing moments that put me in tears. From then on, I got him and loved him. The advertised terrorist cat - Mr Papadopoulos, is a star I wanted more of. However, I think his possible page time was forfeited in favor of Beau – the pig-loving nine-year-old with flavors of Young Sheldon. The County Fair Queen is a slightly unhinged, hugely sarcastic ride with little downtime and a lovely soul. The cast is an eclectic mix with wacky ways and hearts of gold. It’s a masterfully constructed ride of engineered drama, pig protests, and a few extra kinks for good measure. And by the end, you can’t help but love them all. Good Luck. This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
This was such a fun, light-hearted, and delightfully ridiculous read! Lance Lansdale has done it again, giving us characters and antics that are equal parts outrageous and endearing.
Phillip, a former boy band member with a flair for the dramatic, returns to Tallulah, where he runs into Rivers, his high school nemesis-turned-Mayor. Cue forced proximity. Phillip is a walking contradiction. He insists that he hates Rivers, but it’s clear it stems from some unresolved high school hurt. It's hard to take Phillip’s grudge too seriously when his emotions are so fickle.
The cast of characters was an absolute delight , with Rivers’ son, Beau, a standout for me along with the pill-popping Brenda-Carole (or whatever her name might be). Aunt Lurlene deserves her own standing ovation. She’s a take-no-prisoners legend. And let’s talk about Jordan, Phillip’s bestie, who is endlessly loyal and absolutely hilarious. The banter, the genuine care they have for each other, their disturbing co-dependence and his cheeky flirting with Phillip’s dad are perfection. And let's not forget the fabulous Fudge, the pig.
Lansdale is a master at writing unreliable narrators who are equal parts ridiculous and lovable. And I loved all of the little details like Phillip’s quirks - calling his wrinkles “crinkles” and religiously applying night cream which gave us such a vivid picture of his hilariously dramatic character.
The slow-burn sexual tension between Phillip and Rivers was chef’s kiss. It might be low spice, but the chemistry was palpable and it was the perfect tease.
I had so many genuine, laugh-out-loud moments. I have to shout out the little Tatum and Scotty mention, loved that!
Overall, this was a fabulous read full of humour and heart.
What to expect: Former boy band member x mayor Small town Single dad Fake relationship Slow burn Forced proximity Romcom Low spice
4.5 stars This book is the proof that Lance Lansdale doesn't need steam and explicit sex scenes to make his books interesting or to keep the readers' attention. Don't get me wrong, the Murder Daddy series is completely unhinged under every aspect, including the physical one, and I love it for that. But, while Scotty, Tatum and the Bens relationships heavily revolve toward sex, this story is all about feelings, about reconnection, about second chances and new beginnings. There are also two father/son relationships that captured my heart: the one between Phillip and his estranged dad (a relationship that needs to be healed) and the one between Rivers and his child (who are still trying to navigate their life after their wife/mom's death). I loved very much how Phillip slowly became part of Rivers and his son's lives.
What prevented me from giving 5 full stars: The dead wife trope is a tricky one for me and I wasn't totally sold on the fact that Rivers always crushed on Phillip and wanted to reconnect with him the second he showed up in Tallulah again, while still grieving his wife.
Lance Lansdale's writing is always captivating, it's both humorous and touching and his books are really something else. At first, the plot wasn't completely clear, but then I liked that the events of the past weren't immediately clarified, but that we got to know the truth through Phillip's emotions.
This was a very beautiful book and I hope to read more innocent and sweet stories like this from the author (I also hope Jordan will have his own story some day...)
I love when I read a book it leaves a smile even still while reading, such is the writing style of this author. Unhinged and fun- I love it!
Can you call it a second chance redemption love when the relationship was fake to begin with but also had some embers left from when they were kids in school and did projects together, and then came the crowning of the County King and Queen where they both were chosen as King and Queen… and then Rivers ran away…leaving Philip alone on stage…
I loved River Rivera and his precocious, sassy seven year old son (going on thirteen) with his pot belly pig called Fudge and how he crawled deep into the heart of Philip Fletcher neé “Firecracker,”- his idol…
This was a slow burn with heart, soul and laughter by how these two characters navigate past and present feelings… then there’s Jordan - Philips best friend who crushes madly on Philips father… could the feeling be mutual?…
I loved all the side characters and their familiar names, especially Philip’s aunt- what a grand character!
The pill popping, vape smoking film director that gets everybody’s names wrong was a hoot!
I voluntarily received an ARC from GRR for an honest non biased review.
This book was so fun. It's a little silly and ridiculous, but also so sweet with a heavy dose of emotion. It's a great rom-com and a little different from Lance Lansdale's other works. Phillip is an interesting and ridiculous MC, and we only have his POV throughout the book. There's a colorful cast of characters, like Phillip's best friend and unpaid intern, Jordan, who is also very obviously lasting after Phillip's grumpy father, Preston. There's also Aunt Lurlene, who is the epitome of extra, and I love it. Despite Phillip's history with the town of Tallulah, Texas, upon his return, its residents warm up to him and welcome him with open arms. This is a second chance story in many ways, not just where romance is concerned. And of course, we have Rivers Rivera. He's a single dad and the mayor of Tallulah, but also Phillip's childhood crush and supposed arch nemesis for all of a minute. This story is interesting, fun, and a great time. The slow burn was perfect and so satisfying. All in all, this is worth checking out!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Welcome to Tallulah, Texas home of the Muscadine Madness that is all wrapped up in this fun book The County Fair Queen. Phillip Firecracker, former member of the boy band Friendzone has returned to his hometown of Tallulah Texas. He is come back to film a reality television show about himself and hoping to stage a “comeback”, by being the grand marshal of the annual fair, but after years of being away returning to this town might be harder than staging a reality television show comeback. This book was such a fun read, it has amazingly fun characters and great stories. The relationships between each of the characters is such a joy to read. The friendship between Phillip and Jordy, the father/son relationships between Preston and Phillip and Rivers and Beau are quirky and unique. I absolutely loved Phillip and Beaus little friendship. Beau was a definite light and made people happy. Phillip’s inability to remember people’s names was just hysterical. Sometimes I wasn’t even sure who he was talking about. The book is exactly what it is, a light airy read. Fun! Enjoyable and easy reading.
The blurb for this book seems to hint at some rivalry between Phillip and his ex-band mates — with the statement “Phillip vows to upstage them.” However, that … isn’t in the book. There’s a brief, throwaway line about how Phillip wasn’t invited to the reunion, but that’s about it. The blurb also mentions that Phillip will have to choose between his comeback and his mayor, but that also doesn’t happen. Because there is no comeback. So I went into this book expecting one thing and ended up reading something altogether different.
I am not a fan of cringe humor, where people do terrible things to one another for laughs, and unfortunately, that’s pretty much what this book is. It’s the sort of story where there are no characters, just caricatures, and it’s all about the cringe and the camp and the cruelty.
Phillip & Rivers That was some of the most unhinged fun I've read in a while, and I've read Lance's available murder daddy series!
I didn't know whether to laugh or cringe so many times while reading this book, but it never stopped being fun and entertaining. The sass, the backtalk, the quirky flirting, the nicknames...so many memorable bits that bring this crazy story together. I loved all the side characters, although I could have done with a LOT less Danvers, he was not cool. Beau was sweet and fantastic. Aunt Lurlene and Preston were a perfect backdrop to explain Phillip's past. Jordan was an amazing best friend to share in his present. Each character fed off one another's unique antics, and it was so much fun to experience.
The ending was the perfect amount of crazy that fits each character that was part of it. I love how Lance writes his characters with just the right amount of crazy mixed with their normal. It makes the stories that much more interesting.
I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
This is my 5th book by Lance and i don’t know how he does it (ok, maybe I do) but his books keep getting better.
This book follows Phillip Firecracker trying to stage a comeback after being in a forgotten boy band many years ago, that leads him to score his own reality show and to come back to his hometown to shoot it. What he is not expecting is to old feelings for his high school crush Rivers Rivera to still be alive and for Rivers maybe reciprocate them.
This book was bananas, like the level of crazy you expect from Lance if you’ve read his other books. This book is gonna make you laugh so hard and still pull on your heart strings. as always lance excels in creating amazing side characters and the bantienst banter.
The Country Fair Queen is perfect if you love slow burns and low heat books, but the romance, the longing, the stolen glances, and the unresolved feelings between the MCs are everything.
Philip is a has been boy band participant trying to make a comeback in a docuseries by returning to his hometown. There he is forced to repeatedly be around his former crush and public humiliator, Rivers, now the Mayor. When they have to fake a relationship for the cameras, it becomes all too real. Philip is a huge drama queen but adorable as is River's offspring, a mini Philip. Rivers is wonderful and awesome and a sweetheart. It's hilarious and clever and fascinating with rapid fire repartee and sarcasm. I loved this! I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion. This book is a jewel!
"I am Phillip Firecracker. I was in the biggest-selling boyband of the early aughties." "And?" "And I’m worthy."
Zooming into the core of this story, we find a slow-burn romance between Philip and Rivers. Rivers is in love with Philip’s and is so happy he’s back (even for a while)
The hostility is one-sided.
Zooming out again to see the whole picture, there’s so much to see, so many characters, you’ll get a whiplash from the chaos.
The writing style is awesome, the author made the story into something humorous, you laugh and laugh, but also with an emotionally sweet touch.
This book is a wild amount of fun!! It's 100% over the top, so if you don't like that, this wont be for you. But if you like nonstop quips, the absolute quirkiest characters you will ever meet, a small town unlike any other, and a super sweet romance then pick this one up, you wont regret it. I haven't read Lance Lansdale before, but I'll be rectifying that! The end of the blurb describes this so perfectly, "Heavy humor. Heavy Heart. Slightly unhinged". LIke that tagline is absolutely what you should expect when you pick this one up. I'm hoping we get a Preston/Jordan story too!!
Lance Lansdale is the wittiest, funniest author! With The County Fair Queen, he's created a story w/ so much heart & a lot of laughs. I am so in love with these characters! Phillip Firecracker is a down on his luck musician trying to reignite his career by starring in a reality show & returning to his hometown. There are so many wildly fun shenanigans, including the fake relationship w/ his longtime crush Rivers Rivera. Rivers is the swooniest single dad to the cutest kid, Beau! It's impossible for Phillip not to fall in love w/ them. Sooo sweet!!
But the star is side character bestie/assistant Jordan! He's got ALL THE BEST lines! And his flirting w/ Phillip's dad Preston is PRICELESS & fabulous!
I simply LOVED everything about this story & these characters! Such a cozy fun read that completely captured my heart!
He pulled away from the limelight and then he hears his band is making a comeback but without him. He is not happy about so he is going to try to upstage them. His life is going to get more complicated than he expected and things may just become very different so see just how it will all turn out
So many giggles!!! I love me some Lance Lansdale, this story was sweet and so fun!! I can alway count on laughter, great characters and lots of love from this author. This story was great and I would recommend.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
If all of the characters from Schitt’s Creek were rolled into one person, that person would be Phillip. I was here for every single second of it. When I explained the book to Nigel, he immediately said, “Nathan vs Jason,” and that also hit perfectly, because iykyk.
ANYWAY.
This was every bit as hilarious and ridiculous and far out as the Murder Daddy books, just without the murder. It was also sweet as cotton candy waffles, yet I STILL fucking cried in the hospital parking lot. Yet again. I seem to do that a lot because y’all always get me right in my soft feels when I’m sort-of in public.
I swear… it’s like everyone wants my reputation as a hard ass bitch to be ruined. Rude, but also I love it please don’t stop.
5/5. No notes, just good times and good vibes. This was absolutely adorable and there wasn’t anything to not love about it. Well, except for Danvers. I don’t think I liked him very much, but he’s…um, redeemable (probably), so I guess we shall see what the unknown future holds.
*****WAIT!! Sike! I lied. I want to see Fudge and Mr. Papa team up and cause a fucking scene. Beau could be one hell of a ringleader. I stan.
**[I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews (GRR). All ratings, reviews, and opinions are my own.]**
I laughed the entire time reading, it was such an ensemble of characters. This Schitt’s Creek meets Michael from Champion, feel good book. I could totally see it in my head as a movie and it would go into my rotation of comfort movies to rewatch on planes.
I love the wordings of this book, hump and bump, whosits whatits. The alliteration of names and stores, Jordan and his sass! I can not rave enough about this book!
"You have an unhealthy obsession with his arse," Jordan said. "Any time he’s in the room, your eyes are hot-glued to his glutes." "He’s my fake boyfriend. I’m allowed to stare." "You’re not even a top. What are you going to do with it? Write it a love letter?"
Lance Landsdale is fast becoming one of my MM comedic romance authors, someone I can count on for an outrageously fun time.
Ok I know I am super late to give my review haha sorry!
Lance has become one of my favourite authors :D I enjoy the way he writes. This book, like the others, is just so interesting. I mean, the characters he creates are just so full of life and soooo humans.
Our dear Firecracker in this book is just so dramatic and funny, I was able to relate with him and he made me laugh so much. I have a dear friend who acts just like him, so I couldn't not like it haha. Philip appears to be this bitchy gay, ordering around but inside he is just afraid. His character was very endearing and I wanted to cuddle the whole time. On the other side, we have "He who shall not be named" as I love to call him haha, Rivers. This super cutie, shy, in-the-closet mayor and his little cutie baby boy, who is in a way a mini version of Philip (i found that super funny). I enjoyed the fact that he tried over and over to be true to himself even though it was not easy. He really wanted to gain over Philip. The cherry on the top was his son. He made me laugh so much, especially with his pigs.
The small town setup was interesting and very charming. We are discovering the town in the eyes of Philip who comes back, years later, and we can notice the difference between what was perceived by him in the past and now. Living abroad, I related a lot to Philip, because when I go back to my hometown I always have the apriori of what happened years ago. I always fear that someone is going make a comment that will not fit with me or to have me changed. I was eager to just continue reading. I needed him to be safe <3. All side characters are so likeable too, except maybe Philip's assistant/friend hahaha, I am still debating if that one is a good friend or not ;)
The yoga teacher who is doing yoga taught by Tatum and the goddess, the shoe store, Philip's aunt, his dad and all the others, I LOVE THEM. The relationship he has with his dad made me cry a little and I appreciated the resolution of it. I was so scared that it would stay unsolved. Lance knows how to make you laugh by still putting very important messages and value in his books, and that is what I like about him!
TO SUM UP, if you need a heartwarming, funny and lighthearted book for the holidays or just in general? that one is for you.
I really loved “The Country Fair Queen”Phillip Firecracker had me laughing out loud with his dry wit and self-deprecating humor. The premise—an ex-boyband member turned reclusive wine heir dragged back into the limelight—is pure gold, and the setting of the quirky Muscadine Madness fair is as charming as it is chaotic.
What truly makes this book shine is the relationship between Phillip and Mayor Rivers Rivera. Their history is messy and hilarious, but watching them navigate their unresolved tension—and Phillip’s reluctance to forgive—is equal parts heartwarming and swoon-worthy. The humor is sharp, the small-town antics are wonderfully over-the-top, and the romance? Perfection.
It’s a delightful mix of second chances, slow-burn chemistry, and heartfelt growth. Phillip’s journey from jaded recluse to someone willing to take a chance on love again is so satisfying. If you’re a fan of hilarious banter, small-town drama, and a heaping dose of nostalgia, you won’t be able to put this book down.
Phillip Firecracker grew up in Tallulah, TX with his Aunt Lurlene and his emotionally absent gay father, Preston. After being victim to a mean prank where he was crowned as the Queen of the Muscadine Madness Festival, Phillip left Tallulah and became a member of a boy band. Now, 15ish years later, he's back in Tallulah to film what he hopes is his big comeback - a reality show where he is the star! The problem is, the Mayor of Tallulah is Rivers Rivera, the boy who Phillip believes pulled the prank on him all those years ago... the boy with matching names, the boy who ran. What shenanigans will ensue when Phillip arrives in Tallulah with his bestie assistant/cuddle buddy Jordan, his possibly evil cat Mr. Papadopolous, his producer Brenda-Carole (possibly Bernadette), and a camera crew? You'll have to read it to find out!
This book has major Schitt's Creek vibes. With some of the quick back-and-forth, physical comedy, and general ridiculousness, I also got Modern Family vibes. It's full of wacky characters with equally wacky names and descriptions, zany mishaps, and ample sarcasm and banter. It's laugh out loud funny, just as I would expect from Lance Lansdale! But also, just as I expect from Lance, there are also tender moments with a found family, healing of family trauma, personal growth, and lovely moments that will squeeze your heart.
I really got invested in Jordan (the assistant with a kink for gentlemen of the older persuasion) and Preston's (Phillip's gay dad) relationship. I would've loved to get a little bit more about them. Maybe a bonus epilogue or something in another book will be forthcoming *fingers crossed*. Despite there not being enough Jordan and Preston for me, my mind can still fill in the blanks and picture the complete and utter unhinged chaos.
Trigger warning, there is a child in the book. He is maybe "seven, eight, or sixteen-years-old" (or nine.) HOWEVER, I will say, this kid was the least triggering kid I've ever read about, and he was a sassy delight! The entire experience left me feeling a bit confused - who even am I if I like this child? I guess someone who is tolerant of the cool ones. *shrug*
My favorite bits were: - Aunt Lurlene explaining to Jordan how tacky it is to spit, and Jordan assuring her he does not spit, he *redacted*. - Siobhan's talk show and her failed attempt at a Designing Women reference. - Phillip and Jordan hiding in the shoe in Foote's Feet, which is named Vivian. (The shoe is named Vivian, which is in a shoe store, which is named Foote's Feet. I don't feel like I am explaining this well.) - The random religious references, "I'm an open minded woman, but I draw the line at Catholicism." "You two are about as hopeless as an atheist at Sunday service." "... her sense of fashion was about as useful as an evangelical championing human rights." - Bonus points for the Easter egg of Winawana!

This was my first Lance Lansdale book and it was quite the wild ride. I've got his Murder Daddy series on my TBR and I've known that there's a bit of chaotic energy around his characters, but I was still in awe at the sheer amount of chaos one character can carry with them.
Let's get one thing clear from the get-go: if you're looking for lots of bedroom activity, you should keep moving. This is a low heat, slow-burn that is filled with more humor than spice. It's a first person, single-POV narrative that gives you a front-row seat into the inner workings of the mind of former boyband star, Phillip Firecracker.
I found Phillip to be both endearing and chaotic but I loved his sarcasm and humor (both internal and external), which move the story along with an entertaining mix of snark and vulnerability. The quirky side characters (including the town and the fair) are written with just enough over-the-top charm to be both absurd and strangely relatable, all at once. Rivers Rivera - town mayor and Phillip's arch-rival (only in his mind) is charming and I was a fan of the way he deliberately got under Philip's skin.
The relationship between Phillip and Rivers is where the book really shines. Their messy, tension-filled reunion evolves into an exploration of forgiveness and second chances. The story being told only from Phillip's POV allows us to stay focus on how he learns to forgive and move on. And, while the romance is a slow-burn, the end result is satisfying and sweet without veering into melodrama the way it easily could have. The humor is sharp and self-aware, occasionally slightly absurd, but heartfelt and authentic. The low-heat approach may not be for everyone, but it's perfect for a story that is more about redemption and intimacy than steamy moments.
I found the pacing to be a little slow in the middle, and that is what keeps it from being a perfect five star read. But the humor, the heart, and the unhinged small town charm makes this a must read for fans of romantic comedies with more than a little chaos. Pour yourself a glass of (muscadine) wine, curl up with a cozy blanket, and enjoy the ride.
