THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY LEFT TO MAINTAIN THE CUPID MANIPULATE IT BEYOND RECOGNITION.
Grief, back pain, and high legend swallow Charlie King’s future after her cousin’s death sends her home from college and angel wings sprout from her back. Shadowed by a lifetime of secrets, Charlie’s granddad reveals his own wings, shining a light on what she’s made to wield divine compassion and protect humanity as a mortal angel.
In heaven, they call her Cupid.
Charlie’s immersion into the immortal realm and mastery of magic weaponry work together to prevent crime, pain, heartbreak, and chaos on earth. Purpose and power lie just within reach, but the cost couldn’t be higher as she deceives her loved ones, hides her identity, and leaves behind all she knows.
Charlie is the first female Cupid in history. She has no choice but to snap tradition like a wishbone to uphold the mission of the myth.
If she’s lucky, the myth may even offer her something in return.

Josephine’s writing style is bouncy and fresh, keeping her readers enthralled in her world or feathers and arrows. Her characters are well rounded, and lovely to be around as this journey unfolds. The story is fascinating, the setting feels fresh and I loved watching Charlie open her wings and fly into her role as Cupid. I especially loved that the abilities of Cupid didn’t come easily for our MC. She had to work hard and that was satisfying. There were some mild comments made between characters that bordered on PG-13 such as someone asking the MC if she and her love interest “did it” and one use of the word “horny.” While to many these are totally fine, in case other parents are cautious I wanted to mention them. The ending really took me by surprise! I was shocked that Josephine took such a bold turn with her story, but it worked well. The romance in this story is where it truly shines. If Josephine’s next work isn’t something with deeper romantic ties, she and I will have to have a discussion. The way the MC and her love interest interact is spellbinding. I couldn’t get enough! Myth and Mantel is such a fantastic spin on Cupid! 💘
This book is going to keep you on your toes. PLOT TWISTS GALORE. I did not want to put it down, and several of these plot twists got me so good.
~characters~
I love the characters in this book so much. I don’t even know where to start. This book is full of so many strong female characters that I love so much. It also features Henri, the new love of my life. Also Granddad, what a gem.
Other things that stood out:
1.) the girl power in this book is *chef’s kiss*
2.) this book made me laugh so many times
3.) it also seriously had me tearing up in like three different spots
4.) I mentioned Henri, right?
5.) the family dynamics — both blood family and found family
This book now holds a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see it ❤️
This was an incredible take on modern day cupid. The characters were endearing, the story riveting and probably one of my favorite endings in a very, very long time! I enjoyed following Charlie's adventure. So sad to have finished this book but incredibly grateful for the story.
This YA book was fun, emotional, and enthralling. I enjoyed seeing the characters grow and overcome so much, and I really enjoyed the mythology woven into a modern story. I know I've read a great book when I continue to think about it for days after closing the cover, and that was definitely the case with Myth and Mantle. The friendships, relationships, and found-family in this book were beautifully written and touched my heart. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!
This book was….sweet, adorable, heartfelt, modern, and such a unique take on Cupid. I was given this book by a friend and all I can say is that the relationships of the FMC and her family, the dynamics of her feelings about who is deserving of her love and how sometimes you can’t help how or who you love—and the risks you would take for them—had me all up in my feels. 🥰 This is a perfect book for YA readers who are ok with bi characters. The physical relationships don’t go beyond an occasional kiss. Charlie, the FMC, is the first woman Cupid, which comes with its own challengers since Cupid is typically a man’s job. She interacts with angels, demons, and heaven but the topic of God in heaven is tastefully handled. Overall, a funny, sweet, YA read!
I definitely would have finished this quicker if I hadn’t started it right as the semester was beginning…
Overall a really great read! Fast-paced, exciting, fun — classic YA. Charlie was a strong heroine and her realistic flaws made her easy to root for. (I also desperately require fan art of her and Henri, omg 🥺). There was a lot more I wanted to say but it seems that every time I write a review, my mind goes completely blank.
A delight to read and a creative storyline. Once the plot took off, I couldn't put it down. This story is a coming of age, a gentle romance, and an exploration of complex family dynamics. Without spoiling the plot, the characters' choices felt so real to life, rather than true to trope. Can't wait to see more from this author.
Absolutely enjoyed this read! The story just got better and better as it went on, and I was not expecting that ending.
It's a book full of growth, love, and learning, and I'm so glad to have picked this one up and read it! I highly recommend if you like an emotional, action-packed read that puts a great twist on the classic cupid tale
