His is a life of books and peace...until a dying warrior’s touch ignites an ancient magic within his blood.

For years, Thom Darkfell has used his cartography skills to advise Lomair’s king of the country's shifting borders. A valued academic, Thom is excluded from the military drafts until whispers of dark abominations and mass casualties reach the king’s ears. The resulting conscription thrusts Thom into Lomair’s losing army. A realist, Thom ignores the wild myths circling through the ranks—until a monster’s jaws snap through the folds of reality and crush a man before Thom’s eyes.

With his dying breath, the Realm Walker passes an impossible task to Thom. Hours later, the visions begin. The Creator, a deity Thom knows only from rituals spoken over meals and graves, appears to him while a girl with starlight in her blood calls from beyond the veil.

Armed with a cryptic map, a biscuit-loving tutor, and the brawn of his best friend, Thom sets out to find the star daughter and lock the barrier to bind the dark realm of Zakar.

If he fails, it will be the end of all.

Hello everyone. Yes, I am the author. Why, might you ask, am I reviewing my own book? Well, obviously I'm going to give it a good rating. I did, after all, pour my heart and soul into this adventure. Five trillion stars! Haha.

Joking aside, Darkfell holds a special place in my heart. I wrote this book during one of the toughest seasons of my life, and the Lord Jesus Christ poured into me healing, hope, and understanding of Him and who He is as I wrote this story. I hope that you will feel His presence on the pages while you follow Thom and Puck on their wild adventure. Don't worry...it's not all serious. I added a very generous helping of banter and brother-to-brother antics...just for you!

I hope you enjoy this story.

Love, Amanda

Never will I not need some Christian Fantasy with a supernatural bent, and this book just hits it all. There's terrible evil, and a hero who must step into a role he never dreamed of. A total page-turner, the story showcases the value of family, friendship and faith. Classic fantasy, bromance with Thom and Puck...Reading this book felt like reading the next generation of Tosca Lee and Ted Dekker, and I loved it.

"Do you choose me, [___]?"
"Always."

This was a well-written, allegorical story which shined in many ways. I loved the allegorical faith elements, I enjoyed the characters, and the romance was sweet, despite it being a bit rushed.

However, I feel like I just read the 2nd installment of a duology instead of a standalone. I felt that Thom's background and "inciting element" of the plot were rushed, which led to feelings of dissatisfaction as the story continued. Had there been a first installment, the world could have been better developed, Thom's identity built up to, and Eldehein and Drayen's characters would have felt like more than convenient plot tools.

Did I enjoy it? Yes! But I had to do a lot of mental "fill in the blanks" in order to get the connections that I wish the author had done for me.

CW: The "Satan" character does some very gruesome things; his minion does some pretty terrible things too, including planning to (apparently) rape a young woman. (That does not happen!) Scenes with those 2 characters were full of disturbing images.

Darkfell is the story epic fantasy readers dream of. With each turned page, I became deeply immersed into Wright's world and kept wanting to learn more. The balance of action, explanation, and romance is perfection and left me satisfied. I appreciated the focus on positive brotherly relationships as well as the love interest. Wright handled both topics with expertise and grace. With portals, mythical beasts, and a friendship to last the ages, Amanda Wright's debut novel brings epic fantasy to the next level.

This is an amazing, Magical, Wild Ride! That I absolutely loved!

First let's talk about world building okay! So I'm not like the big critiques on world building I don't even need much to enjoy the story. But I know when to appreciate it being well done and beautifully executed. And I definitely did that here! It's pretty expansive, with it spaning three realms and each one has its own details and attributes that are only found there. You have the Human Realm which is still very fantasy-like with its kingdoms and governing systems and that was amazing. Then there is the Hidden Realm which is paradise and beautiful but you get bits and pieces of what is all there as the story progresses. Then there is Zakar which is a place of death and decay, where evil lives. So many details and descriptions, it really allows you to see it all play out and has really great imagery.

There is this amazing and hilarious bromance going on between Thom the mmc and Puck who is his best friend/adoptive brother. Their relationship is so sweet, and funny, and they are both very protective of the other. I adored them two.

Thom is a librarian/cartographer for the king. Until he is drafted into the war. During this time his entire life is flipped upside down. I won't go into details so as to not spoil it, but it's great! He has to travel realms to save his kingdom using a newfound magic. He becomes stronger along the way and I think more confident. He isn't afraid to do what's right and stand against evil. He also meets El'Ohim during this and comes to really rely on Him and trust in Him.

Norealle is the FMC/ love interest. She also happens to be a half star which I thought was really interesting! She is incredible, she is spunky, strong, brave, good with a sword, and very caring. She also helps lead Thom to El'Ohim and is very connected to Him.We don't get to see too much of her POV but she is super cool and I love her!

Their relationship is almost insta love but honestly I'm here for it! It was super cute and sweet and they are perfect for each other! They balance each other out, and Thom is protective of her so it brings out his fighter side a little bit.

The messages woven in too about trusting in God, standing firm in our belief of our Savior, or how doubts can be a part of our journeys, and that God doesn't make mistakes and can use anyone for His purpose. It was so well done and ingrained in the story I truly enjoyed that aspect.

Last things to mention is there are magical creatures, a dragon, a hilarious and wonderful animal side character! Plot twists that will have you excited and asking what is happening. Adventure, magic, excitement, danger, and beautiful relationships!

Content: No-Spice/kisses only, no swearing, death, war violence, dark imagery, human slaves that are not treated well at all, monsters mentioned to eat people, a character gets pleasure from the suffering of others, blood, wounds, (All of this is mildly descriptive but not overly gory, I'd say pg-13 level)

Darkfell is a timeless, refreshing take on classic fantasy tropes that deserves shelf space alongside The Chronicles of Narnia and Dekker’s Circle series. Like the aforementioned works, Darkfell tells a powerful, fantastical tale on the surface, with layers of spiritual depth underpinning the plot. I love finding Christian fantasy that is actually, unabashedly Christian, not simply clean and penned from a Christian worldview. Darkfell is unashamedly Christian. While the plot is propulsive, the characters engaging, and the worldbuilding exemplary, this is a story that would quite literally fall apart without the Creator holding it together. Which is a writing decision that I love, because my story would also fall about without Him.

This is a deeply Christian, vaguely allegorical portal fantasy. The story begins with Titus, the stand-in for Lucifer in this world. He has been chained and imprisoned by El’Ohim, the Creator, in the realm of Zakar. But even from his prison, he finds ways to wage war on the human realm. In the prologue, we get a brief but disturbing glimpse into the mind of Titus as he tortures a new batch of human slaves. This is an intense, somewhat gory beginning, which I thought was an odd decision at first. But upon further reflection, I believe it was a canny choice. More sensitive readers will drop off in this prologue, but those who push through will find that they weathered most of the worst the story has to offer in terms of content.

After the prologue we meet Thom Darkfell, the librarian and cartographer to a king in the human realm. He’s our main perspective character and the reluctant hero of our tale. Thom is obviously bookish, but he’s also an orphan who was adopted by the royal baker and his family. As the story begins, Thom and his adoptive brother, Puck, have both been drafted into a decade-long war. Puck is excited to embark on an adventure. Thom, not so much. He’s radically unsuited for battle, both physically and mentally. But when the last known Realm Walker passes his powers to Thom, he finds himself having to step out of even the role of soldier that had been foisted upon him. Because now Thom is the last Realm Walker on the side of good, the only person who can open portals between realms and the last hope of finding aid in the Hidden Realm before Titus breaks free and wins the human realm for good.

The characters were definitely the stars of the story. Thom is so likable and sympathetic. There's a scene between him and El'Ohim that was a beautiful blend of relatably honest and fittingly reverent. Aside from Thom we also have a female perspective character: Norealle, a half-star whose gift of Sight allowed her to watch her mother die trying to stop the breaching of the wall El'Ohim had built around the abysmal Zakar, to protect mankind from Titus and his Abadonian army. Norealle is a lovely character, if not quite as dimensioned and fleshed-out as Thom. She’s our love interest, and the romance that arises between her and Thom is a sweet, lovely reprieve from the war raging around them. And then there’s Puck. One of my favorite elements of this story was the relationship between Thom and Puck, his brother of the heart. Puck is fiercely loyal and incredibly protective, and he refuses to let Thom venture into danger alone. I love this type of found brotherhood so much. Thom and Puck fit right in with Hadrian and Royce of Riyria, or Locke Lamora and Jean.

I love the faith of this world, and that the Creator, El’Ohim, is so obviously the God of our world. This is one of my favorite things about Narnia and The Circle series, and I loved seeing that approach here. Thom’s faith was lovely. There were scenes where it was sorely tested, but he always held on to it. And speaking of Narnia and The Circle, I absolutely LOVE chapter 39: El'Ohim's Country. The opening scene was a brief but lovely, powerful inclusion, one that reminded me of my favorite scenes from Lewis’s and Dekker’s worlds.

There is so much wonderful worldbuilding here. The Hidden Realm was especially captivating, with its talking animals and tiny nymphs and the sheer beauty and wonder of the land itself. The writing was solid, as were the pacing and the character development. My one complaint is that I wish every character, every location, every tidbit of lore, every single element had been explored more deeply. I wish it had been slightly longer, which isn’t something I typically wish of fantasy books. I loved that this was a standalone story that wasn’t unnecessarily long or bloated, but I also just wanted more! Aside from being left wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed Darkfell. I can’t wait to see what Wright pens next!

10/10!!! An easy favorite for me. Amanda wove faith in the Creator so beautifully into this story and ultimately what it costs to follow Him and trust His plan. It’s definitely not the easy way, but it’s always the better way! Thom’s journey of feeling tossed into a war turned into a deep understanding of being chosen and then deciding to walk in obedience to his calling, no matter how unqualified he felt at times. This book asks the question: Are you willing to let go of your comforts and maybe everything you know to follow Him?! Sounds familiar…!!

Thank you for this book, Amanda. I’ll just be waiting in the corner for Puck’s adventure with dragonsss ;)

I first started dipping my toe into fantasy as a young teenager (though I grew up on Narnia and Redwall), and though there was not a large wealth of Christian Fantasy coming out at the time, I devoured what there was. For as much as I enjoyed it as an adult, Darkfell is the kind of book I would have LOVED as a teenager. I enjoyed the characters, the portrayal of faith, and the fascinating portal magic! It was a book that kept me reading, curious to see how things would unfold. And, as an added bonus, the writing was full of details that enriched the story. Even as a reader with aphantasia (no visualization), I found the details sticking with me as I read, giving every scene a depth I don't always experience when I read.

Perfect pacing and great tension make this debut novel from Amanda Wright shine. Darkfell reads like a classic fantasy with all the right vibes--heroism, loyalty, faith, magic, beasts, and an epic battle of good vs evil. Wright created the perfect cast of characters to tell this story: a reluctant hero who just wants to enjoy his books and maps; his snarky best friend who loyally fights by his side; and a girl he meets in his dreams who is connected to the stars. This adventurous journey through perilous realms, as well as the inner journey of faith and surrender, will have readers turning pages to the very end.

Darkfell is a must-read Christian fantasy. I absolutely loved it!

Thom Darkfell loves his books and maps. A royal librarian, he is not suited to war. When all men are conscripted, Thom, along with his brother and best friend, Puck, who is much more suited to battle, join the losing army.
But there is more to this war then meets the eye.
When Thom is given the ability to become a Realm Walker, he must set off on a quest to save his world from an immortal bent on taking it over before everyone and everything he loves is destroyed.

Thom was such a relatable character. He was no warrior, and often doubted himself, but he was brave, doing what needed to be done. He had an otherwordly tutor to help him with his new Realm Walker abilities who was hilarious, and the comic relief needed to counter the darker bits.
One of the strengths of this story was the bond between Thom and Puck. Brothers and best friends, they would do anything for each other, and I loved the dynamic between them.
There was a great faith thread weaved throughout, with El'Ohim watching over everything and being there for Thom even as Thom had doubts.
Without spoiling anything, I will say that there is an awesome character that shows up in the last quarter of the book that I loved the addition of.

Let me take a moment to talk about the romance. It was so sweet and adorable, and I loved it! Give me all the Thom and Norealle scenes! These two have quickly become one of my favourite fictional couples. As much as I love a good enemies to lovers, it was nice to read a story where the pair fall for each other at the same time.

Wright has done an amazing job on her debut. Although there were some darker moments, it was epic, humourous, adventurous, and sweet all rolled into one. I highly recommend it for fantasy fans, especially if you like your fantasy faith based.

Content:
Romance: Sweet and clean, kisses only.
Swearing: None, though there may have been one instance of the word bl**dy.
Violence: I am a bit squeamish and would rate this as medium level violence. There are a few scenes where the Immortal Slager is brutal to human slaves. There are scenes of monsters attacking humans. There is also battle violence. There is one scene where a female is kissed against her will. She is placed in a tent, and it is implied what she is put in there for, but she is rescued before more harm can be done to her.

Let me begin by saying WOW! Amanda truly knocked it out this realm with her incredible debut, epic fantasy!

🧡The instant I laid eyes on this book, I just knew it was for me, and only chapters in, I was proven right. It is the epitome of a perfectly crafted classic fantasy, with good versus evil, magical realms and creatures, and a hero’s journey at the center of it all.

💚Thom Darkfell is a quiet, introverted cartographer with no business nor interest in adventures. Yet, when he is conscripted into the war against his will, he soon finds himself at the heart of the conflict. With his best friend Puck (the lovable, girl-crazy oaf) a beautiful star girl, and a pesky little bat/squirrel-like ‘faergo’ at his side Thom must navigate what it means to be a Realm Walker; a role he seems to be destined for.

💜The depictions of evil in this book were harrowing but were perfectly balanced by virtue and faith. At its heart, it is a story of family, self-sacrifice, and the fight for righteousness. It was fascinating learning about all the different realms and lore, and I was rooting so hard for Thom and his friends. I am so excited for Book II and can assure you I will be raving about that one too!

🧡This book most certainly holds a special place in my heart!

I picked this up because of the premise, and because I'm always looking for good Christian fantasy. I sure am glad I did--Ms. Wright has created a universe unlike any other I've stepped into. There were similarities, of course, though I'm not complaining about the unlikely librarian and baker's son called into battling monsters. But a number of elements made her world feel unique. The star people?? Come on--SO cool. The magic system's balance between limits and abilities made it, well, magical, and the characters were endearing. I think it does show through here and there that this is a debut; some elements could be tightened up in terms of the story's theme and how the character arcs and relationships are developed. But overall, this is an imaginative, uplifting story that offers a meaningful escape from the humdrum and a reminder of, as Christians, Who it is that guards our steps, wherever our adventures take us.

I hope to read more from this author, especially more about Ranele. It is criminal that we only got to meet her in the last quarter of the book!

As I write this review, I have a hard time putting my feelings into words. This book took me on a journey, and when I started it, it took me a while to get into and I let many other reads distract me. But I picked it up again and hardly put it down until I reached the end.
Darkfell was filled with witty characters, striking bravery, aching sadness, and left me with a deep sense of wonder as I read the last pages of the book.
I really loved Thom and Puck’s friendship, their bickering and obvious love for each other (even if they would never admit it out loud) warmed my heart and made me laugh many times.
I’ll be thinking about this book for a very long time. This is a story that stays with you long after you finish reading it.

Me (Brooke)(36): oh my word this story is amazing!!! I had no idea the journey we were going to go on. This story is faith filled , gritty and real. These characters are dealing with some tough and scary adventures learning and growing as they go. I really enjoyed the edge of your seat and surprise around every corner never knowing where this journey will take us, feel you get from this story. My favorite character is trael lololol oh my gosh he is hilarious!! This story gave me hobbit/lord of the rings vibes and I was all for it. I was really happy to have a book that felt geared to my teenage son who I read this with. This story gave me hope and reminded me to look to my creator.

Ephraim (14): I liked this story a lot because it reminded me of Lord of The Rings and Eragon. My favorite character was Thom because he reminded me of myself and the journey I am battling osteosarcoma. God used Thoms character to helped me get through some of my journey with battling stage 4 osteosarcoma giving me hope. I recommend this story for teens and young adults who like fantasy and action.

Riveting, engaging and inspiring.

A tale full of good vs evil and having strong faith.

Action packed from page 1. I love when a story opens with something that grabs my attention and makes me want to delve in deeper. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

The world building was easy to follow. The magic system simple to understand and made sense.

Thom was a character who was easy to like. A simple guy with a good heart and strong faith. He faced
Many struggles though out his life, but instead of letting that tear him down, it made him stronger.

He may not be a strong fighter or a brave warrior, but he was faithful and inspiring.

“I am El’Ohim, I do not make mistakes” this line jumped out at me and gave me positive chills. It’s so relatable to the faithful.

While the ending was satisfying, I find I am left wanting more!

I'm only halfway through, but my word. This book reminds me of S. C. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia and Pricilla Shirer's Prince Warriors. This book is beautifully written and the emphasis on faith and El'Ohim has been exactly what I needed in this holiday season. The brotherly companionship and the friendships developed are the kind that make your heart feel physically warm. When I have time to pick the book up, I find that an hour flies by as you trek mountains and magical trails with Thom and his entourage. Highly recommend to all who need a good reminder that even if the world feels like its ending, we aren't alone and our path is protected by the Lord Almighty.

Holy. Moly. This one WOWED me from start to finish. It had all the elements of high fantasy I love with plenty of surprises as well. The conflict kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, the relationships both romantic and platonic were so endearing, and the conclusion was perfect. I laughed. I cried. It moved me, Bob.

A gripping debut that did not read like a debut.

"I didn't ask for this power, but I have it. I have to do something."

To be honest, I usually struggle to love or relate to reluctant heroes. For example, I can't begin to explain how many times I wanted to shake Harry Potter for always needing a good, solid push to step up and be the hero everyone needed. However, I adore Thom Darkfell. It could be that we enjoy many of the same hobbies: reading, organization, silence, tea, the indoors, libraries, and of course safety. Although Thom is a reluctant hero, he does not hyper-fixate on the unfortunate circumstances he finds himself in. He bucks up and vows to do his best, even under the full realization that he will likely fail. I think that's what I love most about Thom his courage to face the real possibility of failure. He never builds himself up to be more than he is, and that is someone I would want as my friend and ally.

The brotherly bond between Thom and Puck is pure gold. Their banter had me laughing through the entire book. Amanda did a brilliant job highlighting the humour when the quiet, map maker gained the magic powers needed to save the day, while the big, strapping solider type had to fill the role as sidekick. It was also interesting to see how Puck's doubt and fear for Thom actually ends up motivating Thom to take risks and tackle obstacles he never believed could be accomplish. Although there are moments of tension between these two, it is very evident how much Puck supports Thom, even when he doubts Thom's ability and wishes he could take on the scary stuff in Thom's place.

The final battle was epic. Like many fantasy readers, I live for a good last stand, and Amanda did not disappoint. From the pacing to the descriptions to the severity of the stakes, this final battle delivered everything I wanted. Of course I won't give any spoilers, but Thom does enter the fight in true heroic fashion. My heart was pounding the whole time, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. This was a fantasy battle expertly executed.

If you enjoy found family, brotherly banter, sweet romance, talking magical creatures, and likeable reluctant heroes, Darkfell needs to be part of your 2025 TBR! You won't regret it.

Wow. Words cannot describe how this book moved my soul. The presence of faith is so strong throughout, perfect for Narnia fans waiting for the inevitable Netflix release. Not only that, but if you loved LoTR or the Hobbit and wished Bilbo settled down with a lady (hi, that's me) this soothes that ache I didn't know I had! So much love for this book, an epic for the ages.

4.5 stars rounded up.

𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐥 was an absolute blast! The plot was gripping, the world-building was imaginative, and the allegory deep and well-written. I especially loved the characters—from the reclusive Thom, to the boisterous Puck, to the feisty Norealle, to the biscuit-loving Traell—all of them were memorable and special.

I also really liked that Thom was not the typical brave, outgoing MMC, but a quiet, bookish, and not always brave protagonist (though he was brave when he needed to be!). I thought his character struggles and growth was superbly done.

Everything was really well thought out, the pacing was just right, and the writing was engaging—I could hardly believe that this book is Amanda Wright’s first.

Another thing I especially enjoyed was the allegory/faith content. It was a pretty central theme in the story and it was deep and phenomenally done.

However, a word of caution (especially to the more sensitive readers). Although I wouldn’t say this book was graphic, the violence was definitely on the heavier side. At times it towed the comfort line for me. But I will say that although it was heavy, the violent parts were generally quite short, and I felt that the good parts far outweighed the bad ones. Please keep in mind that this isn’t a YA book.

Overall, I loved joining Thom and company on their epic journey, I enjoyed 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐥 very much, and I’m looking to reading whatever Amanda writes next—would definitely recommend!

DarkFell by Amanda Wright was the high fantasy read I’ve been craving without realizing it. I live the story, characters and world that Amanda Wright has built! Thom DarkFell is the king’s librarian/ cartographer who gets drafted into a war he is not equipped for. He inherits the ability to realm jump, falls in love with a star (Norealle) and fights an evil realm jumper and an evil Satan like being. There’s dragons a strong girl warrior who still manages to keep her softness and a funny fairy like/ imp creature. I really enjoyed reading it and I love how it shows Thom struggling with his faith but able to overcome with help from those around him and El’Ohim.
I received this book from the publisher but all opinions on it are my own.

Darkfell in one word: Phenomenal.

This is a must read for fans of LOTR. Like the classic fantasy series, Darkfell is allegorical and explores good versus evil. Puck and Traell repeatedly give Sam and Gollum vibes, and the journey overall is reminiscent of the trek to Mordor but also stands uniquely on its own. Unlike Frodo, however, Thom is a reluctant hero—he’s just a librarian after all. But he’s also an underdog character one cannot help but root for.

There is also sweet romance subplot that is so well done.

developed worlds and characters on a faith-filled journey

Darkfell by Amanda Wright is an epic journey of an unlikely hero, discovering strength through faith to battle the darkness. With the addition of brotherhood camaraderie, a snarky animal sidekick, and even a sweet love subplot Ms. Wright takes us through a beautifully developed world to discover the power that lies in trusting our Creator.

I loved the journey as well as the genuine development of Thom as he battled the transition from being an introverted librarian, content in the background, to standing confidently in who El’Ohim called him to be (including a legacy that is hinted at from early on but not fully revealed until the final chapters).

The quips between Puck and Traell reminded me so much of Sam and Sméagol from Lord of the Rings (smelly toeses! lol). Each of the side characters added depth to the story, woven together to form a fantastic Christian fantasy.

This book is like a medieval fantasy and a portal fantasy had a baby, and that is a combination I didn't know I needed until I was reading it.

Comparing it to the classic Christian fantasy novels, like Narnia and Lord of the Rings, really isn't fair because it is very much its own thing. It does hit all the beats you would look for in a good Christian fantasy. The evil is bigger than our heroes can overcome on their own, and they will have to make sacrifices. There are doubts, there's faith, and there's hope in the midst of darkness. It's a beautiful story about how God makes a way for those that he calls and how he makes his strength perfect in our weakness. It had tears in my eyes multiple times.

I loved all the characters. They were delightful. The banter was excellent. I love how Puck, Trael, and Norealle interact with each other, and Thom is very relatable in that he is more comfortable in his library than on the battlefield. I love seeing how they all grew over the story. If I could share one minor irritation, it was how Thom always referred to Puck as his friend, even in his own thoughts. I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and shake him more than once over this. That is your brother, darn it! They do acknowledge that they see each other as brothers *eventually,* and it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story, but it is just another way that this story made me feel things. It's not often that I find a book that has a character who I can be annoyed by and still really love, so I actually consider that to be a win!

I highly recommend Darkfell for anyone who loves Christian fantasy! You will come away feeling encouraged and hopeful.
