More personal stakes and a better balance of character work and action make for a vastly improved sophomore outing. Typos and some awkward prose persist, but if this book is a sign of what's to come, The Summoner has found its sea legs.

The Sea of Lost Memories somehow manages the impossible trick of feeling smaller and more intimate than the first book, while still carrying the same thunder-in-the-distance sense of epic fantasy.
Where The Summoner marched across a shattered world with banners flying and ruins smoldering, this story narrows its gaze. It lingers in quieter corners, in grief, memory, and the people left standing after the storm. The result is a book that feels less like a war drum and more like a heartbeat echoing through a cavern, softer perhaps, but no less powerful.
The emotional stakes are what truly shine here. The characters are given room to breathe, to ache, and to grow. Every conversation and choice feels heavier because it is wrapped in the ghosts of what has been lost. The sea itself becomes more than a setting. It feels like a living thing, vast and haunted, swallowing old truths and washing others back to shore.
Ben Krauter continues to excel at creating a world that feels ancient and wounded, full of broken kingdoms, dangerous magic, and the stubborn little sparks of hope that refuse to go out. Even when the story tightens its focus, it never loses that sense that the world beyond the page is enormous and full of secrets.
If the first book was a blazing bonfire on a battlefield, The Sea of Lost Memories is the lantern carried afterward through the ruins. Smaller in scale, perhaps, but every bit as epic, and in some ways even more moving.
