He’s too busy raising his daughter to be looking for love but it seems fate had other ideas. When Luke Steele started his shift as a paramedic this morning, he never thought he’d end up finding the woman who’d steal his heart.
All it took was some tears and a shared bowl of ice cream and Luke knew his life would never be the same. He vowed never to go there again but Charlotte Rowe isn’t just any woman. She’s a smart, beautiful, hard-working doctor who’s shattered after losing a patient.
Teaming up with his six-year-old daughter, Isla, Luke’s determined to give love a second chance and mend Charlotte’s broken heart.
** She’s sworn off men. Walking in on her fiance’s side piece wearing her dream wedding dress turned Charlotte Rowe’s heart to ice… except when she’s focused on becoming the best pediatric oncologist Chicago’s ever seen.
Overcome at the loss of one of her patients, Charlotte falls apart only for a sexy, kind, EMT to find her and take her for ice cream – because ice cream makes it all better.
But when two damaged hearts collide, how can they stay away? Will the driven doctor give his daughter the mom she’s always dreamt of, or will the harsh realities of life keep them apart?

Rebecca lives in Australia's capital surrounded by bushland and kangaroos.
When she's not writing about small town romance or sexy athletes she's watching football with her husband, snuggling up with their dog or indulging in some very yummy chocolates.
The death of a young child brought these two together, as both Luke and Charlotte are in the business of saving lives. But when it matters the most to Luke, Charlotte keeps a secret and Luke ends their relationship. Will that secret once out keep them apart or bring them back together. A good read.
Protected by Rebecca Barber is a cute story of Luke and Charlotte. Luke is a single father of a precocious 6 year old daughter. He is also a Chicago paramedic, and Charlotte is a pediatric oncology doctor. As Luke is at the hospital dropping off a patient, he comes across Charlotte having a meltdown. He tries to cheer her up. The two never expected for one nice act of kindness turn into more. Heck, Charlotte was supposed to have gotten married until she walked in her fiance and some trick. Luke has been raising his daughter Isla ever since the day she was born, and her mother refused to hold or see her and relinquished her parental rights. The attraction between Charlotte and Luke was instantaneous and strong. The attraction scares Charlotte due to her ex, and she is concerned this could be a rebound relationship. Luke on the other hand, is sure about how he feels about Charlotte. His only concern is his daughter. She is already asking questions about her own mother. However, when Charlotte goes above and beyond to put a smile on Isla's face, Luke is sold. Especially when Isla wants Charlotte to sleep over in her dad's bed. This was my first time reading this author, and I was pleasantly surprised with this story. It's a real good love story with good and bad times. I am always a sucker for a precocious child. Isla fits the bill. A 4.5 star read for me.
After agreeing to be on the book tour, I realized later that I had read this book before under a different title, Second Chance Heart which was part of Rebecca Barber's Second Chance series. Therefore, I am going to use that review again. How odd that there is no mention of this anywhere and I apologize if I missed it.
On my second readthrough, I am still captivated with this heartwarming story that really tugged at my heartstrings. You know how some stories just hit you in the feels? This was one of those! I absolutely adored how the main characters fell for each other. It was sweet, charming, and just plain believable. Nothing like re-reading a good ol’ romance to brighten your day, right?
Thank you to Ms. Barber for giving me the opportunity once again to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
4 Star Review Protected (Magnolia Ranch #1) by Rebecca Barber
I couldn’t wait to dive into Protected, about single dad Luke Steele and Charlotte Rowe. Throw in the addition of an adorable 6 year old named Isla and you know you are in for a heck of a read.
This was a well written story with characters whose story you cannot help but be drawn into.
It was an emotional, ugly cry story that ripped me apart and put me back together.
Can they mend one another’s broken hearts or are they destined to be lonely?
I liked the love story, the way they fell for each other was sweet and believable. I one thing I didn't like was the third act breakup. When a man rants like that to someone in front of the friends, who are fiercely protective of her, it is impossible, in my opinion, that they will not immediately defend her. It would’ve protected them against the heartbreak. But maybe that’s me, I never like the third act breakup 😂.
I always love the books of Rebecca, this one was no exception!
This was a really good read. Dr Charlotte Rowe, an oncologist finds herself suddenly single after her fiancee cheated. Luke Steele, a paramedic, is a single dad raising his daughter, Isla. Luke and Charlotte met at the hospital and it was kismet. Fate put them where they were supposed to be. I liked that this was essentially a slow burn (schedules) but when they did get together it was "chef's kiss". You will feel a gambit of emotions throughout this story but I promise. The end will be worth it. Love is worth fighting for.
Heroine: /ˈher.oʊ.ɪn/ 1: a woman who is admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great.” 2: Paediatric Oncologist Charlotte Rowe.
I've just finished PROTECTED from Author Rebecca Barber and upon starting I soon found I was in for some serious hurt on behalf of Luke and Isla, and Charlotte before I got wrapped in a big fluffy blanket of love and glorious romantic satisfaction.
In creating the medical world of EMT Luke Steele and Paediatric Oncologist Charlotte Rowe, Ms Barber more than achieved the right balance of sweet and emotional, with hot chemistry and sexual tension in a way that was unique to her writing style. How is it that a single father owning his parenthood in the way that he did could be such a gorgeous, hot caring alpha male in a way that isn’t a bossy obsessive man??? Luke was mummy AND daddy to Isla, a gregarious and busy potty mouthed 6-year-old daughter, yet he was very much all-male. Serious in his love and parenting role, yet didn’t take himself too seriously.
We met Dr Charlotte Rowe as she discovered in the worst possible way that she was saved from a life of suffocating mediocrity. What I thought made this situation the best, was her best friend Hannah and sport star husband, Mason Flynn. Hannah was that best friend who would always go into bat for her, or at least take a bat to someone in payback!!!
I also loved Charlotte and her interactions with the kids in hospital. All written with intense emotion, whether it be in heartbreak or fun, because these kids go through so much, yet find happiness in things we take for granted. It was during a huge moment of heartbreak for Charlotte that Luke made his presence known, and just as he made an impact on her, he certainly impressed me!!!
I loved everything about the way Ms Barber developed the relationship between Luke and Charlotte. It was more than just a great chemistry, it was also quirky, fun and just ... perfect. Add to that, Luke’s daughter Isla was a gregarious, busy and beautiful energetic buffer between them. Although just when I did start to think it might head towards a slow-burn, Ms Barber turned the tables and the heat ramped straight to high!!! I was as on board with this development as they obviously were, when again there was another U-turn. Hot and heavy then snort laughing out of nowhere.
Another U-turn and I'm crying, all while cursing a blue-storm attached to the name of Author Rebecca Barber. Never one to have her readers rest on their laurels, she ripped the rug of happy out from under me. How could everything be resolved I wondered.
Yeap, Rebecca Barber has put another winning formula together and I loved everything about SECOND CHANCE HEART meaning that I feel I must in good conscience highly recommend it to everyone who loves second chances at love, emotional medical romances and sexy single fathers. 5-Romantic-Second-Chance-Stars 💙°*🖤*°
A story that perfectly balanced heartwarming scenes with heated moments, Rebecca Barber’s Protected pulled at my heartstring continuously throughout her book. I instantly fell in love with all three of our MCs, one of which is a 6 year old girl, and how their story lines weaved together. As one MC is doing everything they can to create a life for them and their child, the other is realizing she almost gave up her dreams for someone who didn’t care about her in the same way.
Luke has been the sole caregiver for his daughter since the day she was born. Her mother immediately signed her parental rights away and never looked by. He has provided a wonderful life for her, but something is missing. A fiercely protective father, he won’t let just anyone become a part of her life. Luke is the perfect example of modern masculinity, providing a balance of mom and dad between one person.
Charlotte is a passionate, dedicated pediatric doctor who loves the kids she works with and does everything she can to provide healing and answers. She has a best friend who stands by her through everything and a voice when she can’t find her own. The circumstances that bring Charlotte and Luke together leave a lasting impression and from their their story progresses.
Rebecca’s story is filled with raw, deep emotions, exploring the depths of a parent’s love, how secrets can cause more hurt than thought, and allowing your heart to stay open to the possibility of love. Throw in Isla, a spunky 6 year old who speaks her mind, this story was hard to put down. Have tissues nearby though, cuz if you don’t tear up while reading, I would have to ask if you read the same story as I did!
As always, review any author notes before reading.

Protected by Rebecca Barber is a heart warming, second chance contemporary romance that will bring the tears.
Luke is an EMT and single dad to 6 year old Isla. Her mother has never been in the picture and Luke does everything for his little girl.
Charlotte is recently single after a terrible end to an engagement and she’s vowed to finding herself and not jumping into a relationship. She is an oncologist at a children’s hospital where she works round the clock. She’s highly respected and known as the best in her field.
After an unexpected loss of a young boy, Charlotte breaks down to mourn when Luke just happens to be walking past, sees her and wants to make the tears go away. Their meet cute is unique and unexpected and although neither of them are looking for a relationship there is a connection with a spark…. And ice cream.
Luke is thoughtful and sweet, and evident he’s the sole carer for a little girl. He sweeps Charlotte off her feet and Isla seals the deal.
Rebecca does an incredible job at navigating sensitive topics and the way she delivers this story feels like this story could be true, not fiction.
If you want a feel good, heart warming read and don’t mind a good cry, then you can’t go wrong with, Protected.
I absolutely loved Protected! This heartwarming and emotional story captured my attention from the very first page. The unique dynamic of a paramedic and a pediatric oncologist brought something fresh to the table, as I haven't read many books that explore this perspective.
There were moments that had me crying like a baby, but every tear was worth it for the journey these characters took. Each character is so well-developed and has their own distinct personality—especially the sassy little girl, Isla, who added such a delightful touch to the narrative.
I was genuinely invested in the story, especially with the unexpected twist involving Todd—my stomach turned for a moment! 😂🤢 Rebecca Barber's writing is engaging and keeps you hooked, and I can't wait to dive into more of her works.
If you're looking for a story that balances love, healing, and the struggles of being a single parent, Protected is a must-read! I'm excited to see where Barber's storytelling takes me next
Charlotte Rowe was Oncologist who returned from conference to cheating fiancé and another woman wearing her wedding dress...of course they broke up, with her deciding to take the all-inclusive honeymoon trip by herself as non-refundable...Luke Steel was paramedic who is single dad, raising his daughter with the help of neighbor who kept Isla while he had long shifts...he and Charlotte met at hospital hallway after he brought in one of her patients who was unresponsive...with him offering her ice cream after her rough day...from then on, was making time from their busy schedules to see each other, falling for the other a little at a time...but no spoilers, circumstances could keep them apart or bring them closer...you will need to read this story to see what happens...I voluntarily read this book through an Advanced Reader Copy.
- Single father - Medical professionals - All the feels
My word. This book. Just about broke me. I was not expecting this to be such an emotionally powerful story. EMT Luke has been raising his daughter on his own since she was a newborn. The precious little girl is a bit precocious, but the light of his life.
Oncologist Charlotte is taking back her life after she walks in on her fiance with another woman who is wearing Charlotte's wedding dress... To make matters worse, when Charlotte leaves to go on her honeymoon solo, she returns to an empty apartment...no furniture, no TV, no jewelry.
Luke and Charlotte meet each other in the hospital where they bond over ice cream. Now Luke is falling hard for the beautiful doctor, but is the timing right for either of them?
This book got me all in my feels and I loved every minute.
This is the story of Luke and Charlotte. Luck is a paramedic with a 6 year old daughter and Charlotte is a pediatric oncologist. They meet after one of Charlotte’s patients dies and she has a bit of a break down in the hallway. Luke offers her ice cream and they have a connection. Charlotte is cautious after a bad breakup when she finds her ex cheating and then he cleans her out. Luke is also cautious but he puts in the work and they start to date. The cuteness factor is heightened when they start to include Isla.
This is an emotional story. This is the first novel I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of super cute moments in this book and a lot of moments that will reach in and grab your emotions and your heart. I loved that Isla is a typical child and has actual tantrums. Sometimes authors write golden children with no issues so it was refreshing to see a kid that actually acted like a kid. I also loved Charlotte, she has such a big heart. She made some questionable decisions, as did Luke, but you never questioned her love for both Luke and Isla. This is a great read.
Medical books, especially if there is child loss, are hard books for many to read. Me particularly...
That being said, reading this, I was impressed.
Charlotte is a doctor who treats childhood cancer. One of the hardest jobs in the medical field. Luke is a paramedic and single dad of a daughter. When they meet, its right after one of their patients pass.
Being a Mama who lost a child, I can see it happen the way written. It was hard to read since it was close enough to what I lived through that it took some time to read. (My Son did't pass from cancer but had a ton of medical issues).
Charlotte and Luke are two people I would have loved to have had as medical professionals with my son. It made me think of those special people who helped make my son's life better during his five years.
Loved this story and will be reading Rebecca's work again.
This is Luke and Charlotte’s story. Luke is a paramedic and a single dad to his 6-year old sassy little daughter, while Charlotte is a smart and hard working children’s oncologist. Neither character is looking for love, but fate has other plans. When Luke comes across Charlotte in upset over losing one off her patients, he takes her for ice cream. No spoilers: this is a must read story. This is a well written story which is an easy to read, emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, intrigue, humor, witty banter, healing, sacrifices, engaging and realistic characters, soulmates, second chances, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, and unpredictable, addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Protected by Rebecca Barber is a heartwarming romance about second chances and healing. The story follows Luke Steele, a dedicated paramedic and single father, who meets Charlotte Rowe, a paediatric oncologist dealing with the loss of a patient. Their unexpected connection, sparked by a shared moment over ice cream, leads them to confront their pasts and open up to love again. With the help of Luke's adorable six-year-old daughter, Isla, they navigate their emotional scars and find hope in each other.
This book is a touching tale of love, resilience, and the power of family. If you enjoy stories with emotional depth and charming characters, Protected is a great read.
Luke is a man who is always there for anyone which makes him a perfect match for his career as a paramedic and a devoted father to Isla, his daughter. When he comes across Charlotte during an emotional moment he offers support and understanding.
After her last relationship Charlotte is guarded when it comes to men however Luke shows her that not all men are like her ex. Spending time with him and his daughter shows her what life could be like but it isn’t without its complications.
Charlotte and Luke are perfect for each other in every way and with Isla are a heartwarming family. The feelings between them are intense however they must also overcome the effects that their pasts are having on the present.
Oh my, this story had all the feels...sniffle. Luke is a paramedic with a 6 yr old daughter Isla and Charlotte is a doctor at the local children's hospital. This is where there paths cross. She's come out of a relationship just shy of marriage...whew escaped in time. Their relationship is organic, his daughter will always come first which can put a cog in the way of dating. An event is either going to connect them deeply or drive them apart. You'll be screaming for goodness sakes communicate. I was really invested in these characters and loved their journey. It wasn't rushed or insta...just right.
Luke is the single dad of a 6 y/o wildfire daughter Isla who speaks her mind. Luke is an EMT and Charlotte is a children's oncologist. Luke and Charlotte meet one day when Luke brings a child into the hospital who is one of Charlotte's patients. Charlotte isnt looking for love after the way her ex treated her and she left him. Luke is trying to work how to be single dad and start a new romance. Everything is going well until it's not. I received an arc for my voluntary honest review for NN Book Blog. Rebecca gives you all the feels with this read. Have the tissues handy there's some tears. If you love a single dad with some angst and tragedy then you will enjoy this book.
He was happy just being a dad, and she almost locked herself down with the wrong man. Neither was looking for what they found when they met. Time and circumstances made things difficult, but the heart is hard to ignore, especially with his little girl around. It's really hard watching what that little ball of sunshine goes through. Trying to protect without explaining almost end's it before they get a chance at being a family. Sometimes, outside influence is needed. This book is hard to ignore once you start reading, especially when it involves children and hospitals.
Luke a single father who is doing everything for his daughter. It isn't easy but he is doing his best. As an EMT he has seen things Noone can or wants to see. Isla is 6 years old who is smart, and rambunctious. Charlotte the Dr. at the hospital. Luke brought in a patient and meet Charlotte who had a tuff moment to say the least. Luke comforted her. They became friends who had a crazy schedule, but things happened. What happened you asked? You must get the book. I will tell you, I laughed and cried. So go and get this book you won't be disappointed.
Another great book by this author! I was hooked from the get go with Charlotte and the fiancé she walked in on! It started off drama filled and just kept getting better! Luke and Charlotte start off really fun and flirty, both not looking for anything. When feelings start to get involved and Charlotte meets his daughter, everything starts to get serious! This author tends to draw out the angst and emotions in this story! Grab your tissues because you will need them! I highly recommend this single dad, second chance, laugh until you cry romance!
Protected is single dad and paramedic Luke Steele and oncologist Charlotte Rowe’s emotional but entertaining journey and It’s book one in the new Magnolia Ranch Series. This book touched my heart and as much as I cried ugly tears I also giggled along the way at the antics of an adorable little six year old named Isla. I was captivated by this at times raw story but I loved joining this emotional roller coaster as this couple find their soulmates when they least expected it. This is a well written story with characters that are easy to love.
Heart wrenching story that makes you cry but also gives hope and inspiration, it has romance and a little cutie princess and amazing characters. It's moving and beautiful, so emotional for so many different aspects. It's ends with a wonderful scene and a Happy Ever After which everyone deserves. I am more than happy to reccomend reading this to readers who love a story that isn't all sweetness and light but has its hurdles just like real life.
This is the most realistic romance I've ever read! The guy is an EMT and the gal is a doctor, both of which mean long hours of work and not a lot of free time. Add in his precocious 6 year old daughter and things get more entertaining.
The POV shifts between Luke and Charlotte. I always enjoy this style because you get deeper insight to each main character. I highly recommend this book for any romance fan. Plus there's quite a bit of open door spice throughout.
This was another emotional story from this author! Charlotte is a pediatric oncologist and Luke is an EMT and a single father to Isla. Charlotte has sworn off men after catching her fiancé messing around with another woman. Luke, however, is instantly attracted to her and won't back down. With the usual emotional twists and turns that this author is known for, their journey to happiness is a can't miss read!
Luke is a sexy EMT and single dad who spends every spare second with his sassy little girl. Charlotte is a busy single Oncologist with no time for love. Fate has other plans when they run into each other in the halls of the hospital. Until Luke thinks Charlotte has betrayed him when he needs her most. Will his head override his heart and shut Charlotte out or can he put his hurt aside and realise that he couldn't be further from truth.
