Vegas like you've never seen, tales you've never heard--until now. Those were the days when you drove to Vegas from Iowa or Ohio or took a junket flight from New York. The Missus would wear her best dress and mink coat, find her lucky slot machine, and you the hot craps table.
Maybe you’d slip the maître d’ a couple bucks to sit at an A table in the showroom for the big production numbers with showgirls and plenty of feathers and not much else. Or you’d get to see Elvis at the International or Sinatra at the Sands. Those were the days when Mob guys with names like Icepick and Blade, Tony and Longie, carried suitcases of money out the back door of the casinos. When leggy showgirls paraded nearly nude and boobs were on display during flashy stage productions. When Binion’s Horseshoe boasted about their legendary high-stakes poker games (and the famous game that was never played with Nick the Greek)—and launched the World Series of Poker. When brothels flourished on ranches just miles from the Strip and sex was on the menu. When Teamsters’ money built Caesars Palace and Circus Circus, and the Imperial Palace had a lot more going on than a car collection. When Frank or Sammy or Zsa Zsa or Barbra or Elvis . . .
Those were the days--all chronicled in 21 unforgettable stories and vintage photos told as only Las Vegas historian Steve Fischer can tell--about those days when the Mob ran Vegas.

I did not read the original of this title but glad I was able to get in on this one. Steve Fischer can certainly spin some yarns on early days of Vegas, as indicated when the Mob ruled. The book not as much about the mafioso involvement but they certainly come up time and again. It is more about characters, players, and the way things were done in the good old days. Far different then the Disneyland we see today.
A collection of his personal knowledge and some interviews, primarily with the show girls who performed in the productions that were everywhere back then. Entertaining, amusing and intriguing with a far reaching cast including some big time names like Sinatra and such. The book is a good read and will appeal to anyone and everyone that has an interest in Las Vegas. I worked behind the scenes years ago on the operations side of the megajackpot slot systems so am somewhat familar with the industry that is gambling. But the personal side is much more of a story and there are as many stories as here to keep ones attention far into the night.
Great compilation of Las Vegas stories and characters from the 50's, 60's and 70's. The chapter on the poker game between Johnny Moss and Nick "The Greek" Dandolos was my favourite.
