The reader is promised ‘breathtaking suspense and nail-biting tension’ in this story of a woman who returns to the area where she spent an important part of her youth. Now she’s in her thirties and her job, which she enjoys immensely, asks her to spend time with her co-workers and her boyfriend somewhere she’d rather not ever set foot again. This is where she lost her parents and her little brother. This is where all her fears originate, fears she battles every day.

Sounds good. Unfortunately for me I couldn’t relate to the main character nor the story as such. Pretty soon in the book it becomes clear what happened at ‘The Compound’ where a group of people lived – and died. From the moments Kaylie sets foot in the area she feels she’s being followed and soon strange and horrible things start to happen. However, I missed the nail-biting tension and the breathtaking suspense. Everything just ‘happened’ and except for the end it was all rather predictable.

Ahh…I don’t want to write this review, because it’s not going to be a good one. I’m usually quite adept at picking out books I know I will like, but I missed the mark with this one. I thought I was getting a story about a cult/compound, and while I did, I feel like the construction of the story was all wrong.

Kylie is a production assistant, and her boyfriend Jesse a cameraman. They’ve flown from Los Angeles to Iowa for a month of working on a movie. Kylie doesn’t want to go there, because it’s where the cult she was raised in and escaped from is, but that isn’t something she’s going to tell anyone else. When they get there, people start dying, and that’s when it goes back to her childhood.

I think my biggest issue with this book is that it was laid out in a strange way. I think if the past had been expounded on and interwoven through the book in a past/present arrangement, it may have worked better. I also think if this could have been either cut some to make more of a short story, or expanded upon to give us more back story, it may have been better. As it was, it was a very simply-written book with a plot-line that was never developed, and an ending that was as implausible as the rest of the story. My apologies to the author, but this one wasn’t for me, and I can’t recommend it to others. This wanted to be a thriller, it wanted to have some horror, but it made me feel absolutely nothing. 2 stars.

From the author of her bestselling popular cop procedurals and crime thrillers, Robin Mahle (favorite author) is back following The Man in My Attic and The Chef (part of the Secrets & Suspense Standalone series) with THE COMPOUND.

The past collides with the present in this spine-chilling, terrifying thriller with a jaw-dropping twist and an unstoppable heroine! A film set meets a sinister cult where nothing is as it appears, keeping you on the edge of your seat with every turn of the page.

About...

Kylie, the lead production assistant on her first big-budget movie, is faced with a daunting challenge. The film is set in the small Iowa town she once escaped, a town that holds her tragic past—the past she thought she had left behind.

Now, returning to the scene of the horrific crime. A dangerous cult from twenty years earlier where her family was murdered in front of her eyes. A fire had shut down the compound and its controlling leader.

At thirteen, Kylie barely escaped a dangerous cult, a cult that everyone believed had claimed her life. Her aunt took her to California, where she was raised under a new identity and name. A name that even her boyfriend and colleagues do not associate with her past.

Soon, sinister things begin occurring, and people start turning up dead. Whom can she trust? She must try to protect others from harm and tell Jesse (the cameraman) and her partner the truth.

Is someone back from her past, from New Hope, the dangerous cult with the controlling leader, Lucas? But he is dead. Who is watching out for her?

Is a follower or someone from the past back for revenge or to control her? Have they discovered her true identity and are back to make sure she dies this time, or is it a more sinister evil plan? Was this a setup to get her back here? Who is controlling the narrative?

She escaped once; however, someone from the past is back, and unfortunately, her colleagues are caught up in the crossfires.

Her worst nightmares are coming true. Yet, Kylie is a tough survivor, determined to find out the identity of the serial killer before they find her, where no one is as they appear. The sins of her family have come back to haunt her in ways she cannot imagine, but she is not giving up. She is resilient. She never dreamed of the events that would unfold.

My thoughts...

From the Iowa cornfields to the farmlands, the film set, the strong characters, the past cult, and the multi-layered story from past to present, Robin Mahle captivates you in this haunting, edge-of-your-seat, atmospheric, and creepy thriller that will send shivers down your spine!

Sometimes, our darkest secrets are the hardest ones to leave behind. Twist follows the twist, and nothing is as it seems.

Set against a ticking clock, this haunting and atmospheric thriller pits a ruthless cult from the past against once a daughter, now a woman who will do anything to keep herself safe and those she loves.

A dark, chilling, atmospheric thriller infused with mysterious and flawed characters. The past and present collide in this taut and unpredictable psychological thriller. (combining crime, detective, cop procedural, small rural town, and coming of age). Loved Kylie, Jesse, and Dale.

I have been a huge fan of the author since her Detective Rebecca Ellis series and anxiously await the next in the series. Whether a series or standalone, Mahle masterfully juggles twisty plots, multiple timelines, characters, and storylines for a highly entertaining read. You will enjoy the detectives and FBI agent, the strong main character, and the wicked twist at the end. I also enjoyed how she used the film business as part of the story, which was intriguing.

If you enjoy books about cults and how easily people can manipulate and brainwash others into joining a cult, and sometimes, the victims don’t even realize it. Whether it’s a story about brainwashing, religious movements, or how innocent children can be caught up in their family's decisions or lifestyles, you will enjoy it.

For fans of the movie Waco, its siege, a 51-day standoff between Branch Davidians and federal agents that ended in 1993 when the religious group’s compound near Waco, Texas, was destroyed in a fire. Nearly 80 people were killed.

Recs...

For fans of the author and those who enjoy cult stories, JP Pomare (In the Clearing), Emma Cline (The Girls), Laura McHugh (What's Done in Darkness), Ashley Winstead (The Last Housewife), Heather Gudenkauf (The Overnight Guest-Iowa- The best!), Willow Rose (Find My Girl), and Freida McFadden.

Get this one on your holiday thriller list.

The Compound by Robin is a mystery/thriller about a young woman who survived, when the rest of her family perished.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Joffe Books, and the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:
(No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
New Hope Compound was Kylie's home twenty years ago, when her family was murdered.  No one knows she survived.  Her Aunt Grace came and got her, raising her, and keeping her safe.

But Kylie is back in that Iowa town.  She and her boyfriend Jesse are working together on a new film.  He doesn't know about her past, and she doesn't know how to tell him.  As the Lead Production Assistant for the film, she worked her butt off to get this job, and can't jeopardize anything now. She just didn't realize how hard it would be to be back here.  When one of the team is murdered, her nightmare becomes reality.  Someone knows who she is.

Dale Coleman is a local who got hired to help builds sets,  and Kylie is suspicious of him from the start.

Detective Doug Burns recognizes the crime.  Twenty years ago Lucas Shaw was killed in an almost identical way.

My Opinions:

This book grabbed me from the first page.  The plot was interesting, and the characters had depth.  I found the pace fast, and the action intense.

The book is told from multiple perspectives, and different time-lines.  While it could have been confusing since the time-lines were not chronological, it actually flowed very well.

There were a number of twists, a really surprising one at the end.  The end, however, did feel a little rushed.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will watch for more stand-alones from this author.

Well whoever described this book as a thriller and said it contained "breathtaking suspense and nail biting tension" did not read the same book I did. This was flat and monotone and not at all thrilling. I was buddy reading it with some others sol forced myself to finish, but had I not been I don't know if I would have bothered Kyle is working as a production assistant on a movie set that has being shot in lowa. Kylie doesn't want to back there, because that's where so many of her past traumatic memories are from, and no one knows about her past, as she even went so far as to change her name so they wouldn't find out. But being there brings it all to her memory. especially after one of the other workers on set gets murdered. She has flashbacks and everything she sees is a trigger for her. Sounds like it should be fab, right? Nope. It was written in such a simplistic way that was hard to read and the plot was never fully developed. And the ending was a flop.

I hate leaving reviews like this, but I can't honestly recommend this one. Maybe others will enjoy-perhaps I’m jaded and expect more-but this was not my cup of tea.

Thank you to NetGalley, author Robin Mahle and publisher Joffe for the ARC and opportunity to review this book.

This was the first I have read by this author but it won’t be the last. I would have given it 5 stars but I felt it dragged on in some areas. There were many points of suspense and edge of your seat moments.

It was a quick read and kept me guessing until the end. I feel the characters could have been developed a little more but overall a great read.

“The Compound” by Robin Mahle, was quite a ride! The story follows a young woman who escaped a dangerous cult years ago, only to return to the same town for work—where all her past fears and unresolved trauma come rushing back. The suspense in this book is constant, and there were times I found myself on the edge of my seat, desperately turning pages to see what would happen next. The tension between her past and present, combined with the eerie atmosphere of the town, kept me hooked until the very end. If you're into thrillers that get under your skin and keep you guessing, this one’s a must-read!

This is the fourth book that I've read by this author now, so I absolutely knew that I was going to get a great read given that I loved the previous 3 that I've read.
I also loved the look of this front cover which already gave me creepy vibes!

So this read took on a slightly strange and different format than the psychological thrillers that I usually read and as we follow Kylie's story we get swept along in all the chaos of her mind.
There were times I felt really confused - but once everything came together, it was easy to look back on that and realise that the effect was entirely purposeful.

Kylie is carrying the trauma of the last - but her memory has been blocked out from the events of 20 years ago and so I spent time wondering how reliable a narrator she would be.

This put me on edge from the very start and carries us through the memories and the new events - which take on a creepy atmosohere and become somewhat gory too.

This was a super fast-paced read and I found I couldn't put it down as I tried to put the pieces together, only to be thrown another twist.
I loved the ending as everything pulls together and I definitely didn't see that twist coming.

Another great read and I'm already looking forward to my next one from this author!

Fast paced and intense

This was an unusual read. It began as an interesting story about a young woman, Kylie, who had returned to work on a film set in the place where she grew up. However, it was quite clear from the start that there was not going to be anything ordinary about this book. The format took us through various accounts of the proceedings from several different characters – the main one being Kylie. Gradually each little bit of the story started to come to light – although not always in a chronological order, and not always making a lot of sense. A lot of Kylie’s thoughts were confused and she constantly hinted at not being able to admit to what had happened to her 20 years ago. It was clear she was keeping lots of secrets and there were times when she was convinced that everything that was happening in the town was her fault. Gradually, the history of her life started to reveal itself and that’s when things changed, and the action really hotted up.

The story itself is very fast paced, and I found myself speeding through the chapters to try and keep up. This was quite exhausting at times, and it was one of those plots that kept producing twists that were both frustrating and infuriating. I would say that this book is somewhat akin to a horror story with all the murders taking place and there are times when I just found it rather scary. On the other hand, it was an interesting read and the huge twist at the end was totally unexpected and a welcome relief. The ending tied it all up very nicely and made me pleased I had continued to the end of the book. I would like to give it 5 stars but do feel that there was an awful lot of unnecessary padding in places which made the book just a little bit longer than I feel it needed to be.

5⭐️ A Riveting Page-Turner!

Robin Mahle’s The Compound is a gripping and fast-paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The story combines suspense, unexpected twists, and compelling characters, making it impossible to put down.

The protagonist is both relatable and resourceful, navigating a web of danger and deception that constantly keeps you guessing. Mahle’s writing is vivid and engaging, with just the right balance of action and emotion. The plot is cleverly crafted, with twists that I never saw coming, yet felt entirely satisfying by the end.

If you’re a fan of thrillers that keep you guessing until the very last page, The Compound is a must-read. This is Robins second book I’ve read and I can’t wait to dive into more of Robin’s works!

This is a very different kind of psychological read.

The story follows Kylie, who is a young woman who has returned to her home town to work on a film set.

She's had quite a traumatic childhood, including her teenage years so you can imagine what is about to happen...

Kylie is a great character and Robin keeps you engaged as you learn about Kylie and some if her past and experience strange events that are happening to Robin and her colleagues/friends.

Dark and twisty, this is a very unique style of psychological thriller which any thriller lover will enjoy!

I really enjoyed The Man in My Attic so when given the opportunity to read another book by this author, I jumped at the chance. Simply reading the blurb and seeing the cover gave me intense vibes, they created an atmosphere alone, so I couldn’t wait to explore more.

This was totally different to what I expected though, it was more of an action packed thriller than psychological for me, lots of cat and mouse chasing going on, but it packed a punch! It has a great build up, tense in places and then we were hit with the fast paced climax.

I quite like my reads dark, so I’d of loved to have more of a backstory for The Compound itself, to really here about the horrors that went on in there, but other’s may feel like the history we got was just enough.

I enjoyed the multiple points of views, to watch everything unfold from different perspectives, but again, the dark reader in me woul have also have loved to be in the perpertrators head too.
It’s safe to say the author is very clever with their twists and turns and despite not being your usual psychological thiller, this one really did take you on a crazy ride which I enjoyed.

This book was extremely creepy but I just couldn’t put it down! I loved everything about how it was written: the flashbacks, the different points of view and the drip feeding of information little by little! You really felt like you lived all of “Kylie”s emotions as the story unfolded. I genuinely thought everyone was guilty but the ending had me speechless. I would recommend this book to others especially if you like a good thriller!

Here is my review for The Compound by Robin Mahle

This was a great psychological read which I truly enjoyed reading. Twenty years ago, just outside a small town, there was a cult set up called New Hope. The leader was called Lucas with his second in command Clarence Skinner. Clarence had a wife and three children, two girls and one boy. One afternoon, Clarence attacked and killed Lucas. Then Clarence and his family were killed by Lucas’ followers except Kayla who escaped and grew up with Aunt Grace. Now Kayla has changed her name to Kylie and she is living in Los Angeles working on film sets. Kylie works as a production assistant and this time is her big chance but the film is being shot in a farmhouse in a village not far from where she grew up. It should be ok to go back now as the followers from the cult either died or were put in prison. They got the first day of filming done and the crew had drinks that night at the hotel, everything was fine. Kylie and her boyfriend Jessie had a couple of drinks and went upstairs. When she awoke the next morning, they had overslept so had to rush to get dressed and hurry to the film set. When they arrived at the set, everyone was just standing around and no work was being done which was strange. When they arrived, they heard the awful news that someone had been killed in the farmhouse! This book was a brilliant read and kept you in great suspense whilst building the tension. This author is a great writer at keeping you in suspense. The book was extremely well written whilst feeding you information in dribs and drabs. Someone knew who Kylie was but who? She hadn’t divulged her past with anyone, not even Jessie. Who is the strange handyman Dan Coleman who is hanging around the set?

Blurb :

Robin Mahle delivers a chilling and unrelenting thriller with The Compound, a story that dives into the harrowing world of human trafficking. This novel grips readers with its intense subject matter and keeps them on edge with its masterful twists and turns, ensuring that neither they nor the protagonist can fully trust anyone.

Mahle’s writing shines in its ability to tackle a dark and disturbing topic with both sensitivity and gripping detail. The narrative exposes the grim realities of human trafficking without becoming exploitative, balancing suspense with moments of emotional resonance. This balance is crucial, allowing the reader to stay immersed in the story while reflecting on the broader implications of its themes.

The constant air of suspicion is one of the book’s strongest elements. Mahle’s talent for crafting unpredictable plotlines ensures that the story remains unpredictable, with loyalties shifting and danger lurking around every corner. This uncertainty mirrors the protagonist’s plight, deepening the reader’s connection to their journey.

Mahle’s pacing is relentless, pulling the reader through a labyrinth of deception and peril. The main character’s struggles to determine who to trust add to the intensity, creating a deeply immersive experience. The stakes feel real and immediate, making this a thriller that lingers long after the final page.

Verdict: The Compound is a gripping and deeply unsettling thriller that masterfully explores the horrors of human trafficking. Robin Mahle’s sharp writing and unpredictable plotting make this a must-read for fans of dark, thought-provoking suspense.

The Compound
By Robin Mahle

I was given a copy of the book by the author to read - my first time reading this author - and man am I thankful I was chosen as one of the ARC’s for this book.

First off, not for the weak of heart. The author does an amazing job of creating a story around a story before you realize it’s happening. I found myself sucked in from the first paragraph of Chapter 1 and stayed that way throughout the entire book. “Flames licking my back. Screams……” tell me how that doesn’t make your mouth drop open and your heart beat double time making your mind wonder where is this going??? So many times throughout the book I thought I had unraveled the mystery of EVERYTHING going on only to find out how wrong I was. From the main character to the supporting characters there were no stones left unturned when it came to letting you get to know them - but it wasn’t in a drawn out “oh my gosh can you get to it already” kind of way. Twists, turns and valleys but they are all worth going through to get to the truth!! I know this is all vague but I do NOT want to give any spoilers to the book but I will tell you this one thing, make sure to read the ENTIRE book as to finish out the story!!!

PS I finished this book in less than one day because I couldn’t put it down!!!

The Compound by Robin Mahle is a suspenseful thriller following a woman 20 years after she escapes from a cult who reluctantly returns close to home for a location movie filming.
The job pays well, and it’s her chance to move up in the industry. No one knows who she really is except for her Aunt who took her in at 13 yrs old and her Aunt didn’t want her to return to that horrible place.
It’s been 20 years, she can handle being just outside where her entire family was brutally murdered for a few weeks. Right? Everyone from that time was either in jail or died so she has nothing to fear going back for a short time for a job. Little does she know that she hasn’t escaped the cult completely after all this time and strange things happen after she returns.

Is she going mad?
Is there a copycat killer?
Or
Did someone from her past survive that horrific night, know who she is, and want revenge?

-Multiple POV
-Cult survivor
-Hidden Identity
-Small town
-PTSD
-Copycat Murders
-Flashbacks
-Family Massacre
-Trust no one
-Haunting past

This book kept me guessing, and the culprit was a surprise as well as the ending. It was a quick read and overall I did enjoy it.

*I received an ARC of this book I'm exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*

The Compound by Robin Mahle is a twisty read about family secrets and what happens when the past comes back to haunt you. Kylie was just 13 years old when her family was murdered and she escaped from a cult. Now 20 years later, Kylie reluctantly finds herself working on a film that is set in the town where the cults compound was. She has hidden her past from those closest to her so when the murders start she has to wonder if there were survivors from the fire that destroyed the compound all those years ago. As she begins to look into what is happening to her friends, she knows that somehow they know where she is, and who she really is.
This was my first book from this author but it will not be my last. This story has plenty of twists and shady characters to keep you guessing. I like how this story is told from multiple perspectives so you are able to figure out information along with the characters. That tension that this author has built up in this book, especially between Kylie's past and present, made this story very enjoyable to read.

Thank you to Robin Mahle and Joffe Books for this ARC. Release date is December 10th 2024.

"The Compound" by Robin Mahle follows Kylie, who returns to her hometown to work on a film set as a survivor of a cult that was held on a compound. She thought she would never return to her dark past, but once sinister things happen on set, she believes not all cult members were lost in the fire twenty years ago.

Thank you, NetGalley and publisher Joffe Books, for the gifted eARC for review purposes. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I didn't really care for this story. I originally picked it up because many early reviewers thought it would be similar to a Freida McFadden story; however, I strongly disagree with this assessment. I was disappointed when it lacked the cult story I was so eager to read, and there was a lot of repetitive storytelling, which made me feel like skimming over most of the story. It didn't draw me in at all.

The most fascinating part of the story was the ending; however, unfortunately, you need to read most of the book to get to it. There was a lot of eye-rolling on my part and many impossible scenarios included in the story.

Unfortunately, this story was not for me.

"The Compound" by Robin Mahle will be available December 10th, 2024.

Though I'm not into cult stories all that much, the book doesn't center on that aspect too much so that part is not overdone in this story. The cult is pretty much dead since the beginning of this book.

This is a book where our main characters past has caught up with her while putting her in danger. Kylie is a production assistant, and she has her boyfriend Jesse who is a cameraman. They are filming a movie near "The Compound". A Place that haunts Kylie's past as her parents and entire family were killed there years ago. She was the only survivor. So, she was leery of returning to this place that haunts her. Then people start dying and she feels someone from years ago is coming after her for revenge. But who? Did someone else survive like Kylie did?

This book had its thrills, just enough to not make the book too boring. There was some action moments scattered throughout this book which kept me interested. So, the thrills were satisfying. But the ending was not all that great, but I didn't guess what did happen, so the twists did catch me by surprise. So that's good.

All in all, I did like this book, and I give it 3.9 stars.

*The Compound* by Robin Mahle promised a thrilling, suspense-filled plot, but unfortunately, it didn’t deliver on that front. While the premise had a lot of potential, the execution left much to be desired.

The pacing was slow and lacked the tension you might expect from a psychological thriller. Instead of gradually building suspense, the story felt flat and predictable. The characters didn’t feel fleshed out enough, and their motivations often seemed unclear or underdeveloped, making it hard to connect with them or care about the stakes.

The twist, which should have been the story’s big payoff, fell flat. It didn’t feel surprising or earned. While the writing was competent, it didn’t elevate the story to the level of suspense I was hoping for.

Overall, *The Compound* just didn’t live up to the hype. It might appeal to readers looking for a more straightforward, less intense read, but for those craving real thrills, it’s likely to feel lackluster.

Page-turner

If the situation were not so far-fetched, this would be worth more stars. The suspense is finely tuned, the characters likable enough, and the plot is imaginative. Kylie works in LA as some sort of movie worker, and she is hired to go to a small town in Iowa for filming. She is not keen to go there, because that tiny town was where she lived when her parents were members of a cult. Everyone in the cult died when Kylie’s father killed the cult leader, but Kylie managed to escape and was rescued and raised by her aunt. Kylie has not shared the details of her childhood with anyone, so she has nowhere to turn when random people in the movie crew are murdered, the first in a recreation of the way her father had killed the leader. Things get worse and worse, the movie production moves to another state, but Kylie and her boyfriend inexplicably stay behind to confront and capture the people responsible for the recent deaths. It doesn’t go well. Even as I sighed over the unlikelihood of what was happening, I could not stop reading, so that’s something.

I will say this was a thrilling story. Add in a crazy cult with a disaster ending in fire and blood and a survivor on the run, hiding from any other cultists and of course it is going to be exciting. Though if I had been Kylie I would never gone back to the area where it all happened. Kylie actually seems to be fairly well adjusted and I kind of admired her (notwithstanding the stupidness of going back) cause she had a good job, a normal life, and a sweet boyfriend.

Yes, there are secrets, people ending up being murdered, and someone who is going to do anything to get back at Kylie for what happened all those years ago. The build up was nicely tense and I ended up being unsure of who, even if it was Kylie herself. Thought the ending was a big gross, I kinda liked the twist and how it shows that Kylie is strong and that the cult will not bring her down, even if it may kill her.

So, I did keep reading to find out what happened and I liked most of the book.

Twenty years after escaping a horrific event that left her family dead in a fire and her brother brutally killed, a woman returns to her small Iowa hometown to confront her haunted past. As she delves into the memories of that terrifying night and the man who vowed revenge, she realizes her return may be her biggest mistake yet. Secrets long buried resurface, and danger looms as she faces the echoes of her family's tragedy.
This book was an engaging read with an intriguing storyline that kept me hooked. While the beginning felt a bit slow, the pacing improved as the narrative progressed, drawing me deeper into the mystery. The author skillfully included multiple red herrings, keeping me guessing about the true culprit and motives until the very end.
What truly stood out was the final twist, which was entirely unexpected and elevated the overall reading experience. The suspense built steadily, with well-placed clues and misdirections that kept me on edge. While some sections could have been tighter, the payoff was well worth the wait.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in 2 sittings.

The storyline is great.
A cult leader dead and a family was murdered when living on a cult compound, but Kayla the daughter of the family escaped before they got her. She hid and was picked up by her aunt , whom she went to live with.
Forward to several years later. Kayla is now going by the name Kylie. No one know about her past including her partner Jesse.
The film crew she is part of has to go to the same town that she lost her family, and she's worried.
A crew member is killed in a very similar way to the cult leader and Kylie Is scared that someone in town knows exactly who she is and is coming after her to finish her off.

I really recommend this book. You learn about the circumstances of her parents death and who is killing people around her. The killer is a shocker!
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

When Kylie returns to her home town to work on a film shoot, we soon realise that there's something in her past haunting her. When two of her colleagues are murdered, and signs are left pointing to her past, Kylie soon realises the killings are connected to her previous life.

For me this book was a mixed bag. The plot was interesting and it was full of twists, turns and false leads.

Some of the scenarios we were presented with were just too elaborate to believe, some of the decisions made were utter madness, and I felt the book could have been concluded in half the time.
The ending had an unexpected twist and it was quite neatly tied up.

Thank you to Joffe Books for the ARC and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

Thanks to both Netgalley and Robin Mahle for this ARC.

What a ride! I usually stay away from stoies involving cults - I don't know why - but I heard it would be a good read for fans of Freida McFadden, so, I gave it a go. Plus, the blurb and the over both really spoke to me, as well.

The story is told in the POV of Kylie, Detective Burns, and Dale, and gotta admit, sometimes In had to double-check whom's POV I was reading, because it was all first person. It makes things a little harder to not get messed up. At least, for me.

Still, I did enjoy the twist and turns and wanted to know where the stoy would go. Started reading before bedtime and then on my way to and from work, and could ignore the awful weather because I was invested into the book all of the time.

Brilliant read. It had me gripped from the first page. So much suspense and intrigue as the story progressed. Just kept getting better and better. Had me on the edge of my seat. There were plenty of bombshells along the way too. I read it so fast as I was dying to know what happened next especially towards the end. The ending was great I was not disappointed. I've been so impressed with this author. I've loved the books from this author. So talented. I love how the author allows you to get inside the mind off all characters. Including the bad guys. As for the storyline a really interesting topic. There is something so fascinating yet sinister about cults. I can't imagine anyone not liking this book.
