The story of Rasabel and Isolde is a beautiful retelling of Ladyhawke as a sapphic, tug at your heartstrings, love story.
A curse is placed on the lovers by an evil bishop that forbids them from occupying the same physical space. The story is so engaging I had trouble putting it down. I ached for them and they loss each felt without the other. There is intrigue, angst, and undying love as we journey through this beautiful story.
I highly recommend adding this to your tbr. I received an arc from the author and happily leave my review.
An epic tale of scorned lovers cursed to be without each other. A sapphic retelling of Ladyhawke that will hurt your heart in all the best ways.
I received an advance copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Isolde is a lady by blood but a warrior at heart. Growing up with her beloved uncle she learns all the fighting techniques to defeat any man or woman. Only an extremely well trained warrior can help to improve her skills. Enter Rasabel, Captain of the Guard. Rasabel is ordered to teach Isolde everything she knows so the fair lady can become the treasured posession of Rasabel’s boss the Bishop of Acadia. While training Isolde the two women fall in love and wish to be married so Isolde can escape her fate. When the greedy bishop learns of their love he puts a curse on them: Isolde will transform into a hawk by day and Rasabel into a wolf by night. They will both spend half their life in animal form not recognizing each other.
I was absolutely hooked into this story after just a few pages. I have not seen the movie that this is a retelling of, but I suspect I won’t ever watch it as this such a gorgeous story all on its own. The images I created in my head are now carved into my mind.
Behind the Eyes is all about the strength of true love. A love that even the cruelest of curses cannot diminish. The desperate longing of both Rasabel and Isolde is tangible and seeps right off the pages and into your soul. The imagery is breathtaking and as harsh as it is beautiful.
There is an unexpected connection between the two women and the young thieving girl Bylyn who ends up helping their attempt to break the curse. Bylyn being an unsuspecting witness to this cruel lovestory and the transformation she goes through herself because of it is a joy to watch.
The only thing I would change to this story is that there should be more of it! I was not ready to say goodbye to Isolde and Rasabel and I suspect you won’t be either. That, to me, is the ultimate sign of a great book and proves that Sharon K. Angelici is a very good storyteller.
The first part of the story was quite confusing trying to follow whose story was being told. The head hopping was mainly the reason and it doesn’t help that the story was just setting its foundation, thus, needing more effort to trace which character was narrating at certain points.
The foundation of the story was good. The premise was promising and had a lot of potential. With more polishing and a bit of revision, I reckon it would elevate the story more. It had all the raw materials, it’s just the way it was constructed and the way the materials were put together failed to highlight the story’s true potential.
I so preferred this sapphic retelling of Ladyhawke over the movie I watched 40 years ago. Rasabel and Isolde in a different dimension vs. the totally strange match of Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the movie my favourite was a young Matthew Broderick as Gaston and in the book I really loved Bylyn that I hope can get her HEA as well one day.
So yes this was a fun read but perhaps it is even better when you have not watched the movie that kind of distort the image you have of Rasabel and Isolde.
Behind the Eyes is a lasting tale about the enduring power of love. Without giving too much away, this particular story isn't a genre I normally read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The pages are infused with knowledge, heartfelt observations about love, and just enough humor. I only wish the two main characters would have had more time on-page together because that's when the magic truly happens.
Angelici appears to have ample experience writing dialogue fitting this time period in addition to what belongings and weapons the characters might have had at their disposal. It immerses the reader into the era, one which I would have never survived. (See Blywyn's multiple escapes.)
All in all, I was captivated by Rasabel and Isolde's relationship and routed for them. Perhaps most exciting for readers, Angelici leaves the door open just a crack for a possible spin-off.
I love reading shifter books, more precisely sapphic shifter books. But this one took a different twist. As they were made shifters because of a curse placed on them by a jealous person. But in the end it all worked out and their love could live as it was intended to.
I grew up in the 80’s and I was a fan of LadyHawke-it played constantly on the only cable channel we had at the time. To now have this story made Sapphic makes me so very happy! Thank you Sharon for this amazing retelling! And here is hoping for a book 2🤞🏼🤞🏼
This is a Great read. The story is very good. The character s are well developed and likable. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book.
Rasabel and Isolde have a love story like nothing else, the warrior and the lady of society that refuses to conform, who are left searching for freedom from the torment bestowed upon them. Rasabel comes across Bylyn, a young thief on the run, who becomes entangled in their lives and ends up becoming a pivotal part of this story.
I was blown away with the twists and turns this story took, and the adventure that surrounded the heartbreaking position Rasabel and Isolde found themselves in. Things really came to life when they met, with a passion between them that raged hot and heavy until cruel fate from a betrayal left them lost to one another but never apart, and yet still not able to be together. It was when Bylyn turned up that things really took a turn and all the pieces began to come together and share what had happened to Rasa and Isolde for them to find themselves depended on their new friend for help.
Bylyn was a lot of fun, and I am glad she was a part of the story. She brought humour and light to a dark situation and helped Rasa and Isolde to have faith restored in the goodness of people the world perhaps didn’t deem good in their fight to try and survive. Bylyn at first was wary, but even she became clued up fairly quickly about her new friends, even if it took her a long while to think of them that way. They showed her kindness and she had nothing to lose in helping them, even if she hadn’t got a clue how she was helping.
This had such a heartwarming sentiment running throughout because of the irreplaceable connection Rasa and Isolde shared. I adored them and really hoped they found their way back to one another. A very enjoyable adventure, and I also look forward to listening to the Audiobook version very soon, as I also think that will only heighten the wonder of this historic, mystical, romance.
**Behind the Eyes** offers a delightful sapphic twist on the classic Ladyhawke-inspired tale, weaving romance, swordplay, and mythic enchantment into one engaging read.
Right from the start, the stunning cover artwork perfectly captures the story’s blend of fantasy and romance, drawing you in even before the first page.
Rasabel and Isolde’s relationship is filled with tender longing and fierce determination, and I especially enjoyed watching their bond evolve.
The author bravely tackles an intense and emotional theme, the semi-omniscient point of view was unexpected. While the shift in perspective is different, it lends the story a distinct flavour—you may find refreshingly different.
Ultimately, Behind the Eyes is an enjoyable sapphic retelling that brings something new to the “sapphics with swords” trope.
Sharon K Angelici’s heartfelt writing and sweet sense of romance shine through, making this a fun pick for fans of fairy-tale, fantasy, or film retellings with a bold, queer twist. Very enjoyable 4.5⭐
Behind the Eyes was a beautiful Romantasy about a warrior captain of the guard and a young woman whose uncle left her, as part of his "property" to an evil bishop upon his death. As Rosabelle, the captain, comes to bring Isolde to the bishop, the romantic attraction between the two strong women is unstoppable. Each is an excellent fighter in their own right, but neither can counter the feelings they have for each other. And then their lives are shattered by betrayel and a shifter curse preventing them from ever again gazing on each other's human forms again... Until a little thief finds their way into their lives.
The book grabbed my attention from the beginning and held it right through the end. In the first quarter of the book, i at first felt that much of the the MCs young relationship was skipped over and inwas left wanting, but it is actually filled in by flashbacks throughout the book that form a sort of duel timeline.
The prose is beautiful, and in the audiobook version, the narrator does an incredible job bringing life to all of the characters. Her voice work matches the characters perfectly. The love, and future potentially lost, between Rosabelle and Isolde pulled at my heart and had me in tears...
The book also contains a moderate amount of swordplay and some gore that added some exciting action and tension.
The spice level is maybe 1.5/5 as the MCs are described in many intimate interactions but nothing is really explicitly described other than kissing and sensual caresses. The desire between the characters is strong, and dialogue beautifully sweet, but heavy spice is mostly implied or off page.
I only wish I could spend more time w the characters.
CW: animal injury and death from hunting for food. No named animals are killed.
It was very confusing at first, with the time jumps and different POVs, not to mention the plot. But when I realised where it was going it suddenly made so much sense. The book is well written and the audiobook is narrated by the amazing Jessie Elwyn. There are many exciting adventures and adorable romance. This was a very interesting story, surprisingly I can't remember reading anything similar in sapphic fiction. Highly recommend this book!
This book is stunning from cover to cover. I listened to the audiobook where Jessie Elwyn brought Isolde, Rasabel, and Bylyn to life. Every single word written by Sharon Angelici in this love story is expertly crafted to let the reader feel the full force of the yearning of the lovers for each other, by the anguish of their impossible curse.
This is Sharon’s best story to date amongst an already impressive collection of sapphic stories. Do yourself a favor and lose yourself in the whirlwind of emotions that this tale will evoke.
4 stars. The writing in this was so good and vivid. The love story was great as it crosses time and felt really epic. The plot was intriguing for the most part but I feel like the climax was a bit weak but other than that this was good. I didn't absolutely love it but it is one that I would highly recommend if you want some action and adventure with your romance. It was a lot of fun.
STARS 5 stars (I loved it) SPICE low spice (there are no explicit scenes. But there are intimate scenes just not graphically described) CHEMISTRY I loved their chemistry ANGST medium angst (the angst is never against each other) SLOW BURN They fall for each other quick but they are not able to fully be together until the end. CLIFFHANGER No
FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES "You kneel to know one" - Isolde "I kneel to the Lord Bishop. And I will forever kneel to you" - Rasa
”I fear few things, Isolde of Mondurey. You knowing me to well will never be one of them.”
”It is a solemn vow I make, Isolde of Mondurey. That I will be yours until I am no longer able to.”
”The story of their love will break you heart.”
A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL I chose this book for a book challenge. The challenge was to read a book with a FMC that is a warrior. This book was recommended and it was AMAZING! It is the retelling of Ladyhawk with a sapphic twist. I could not remember much about Ladyhawk but what a beautiful story. To people in love but separated by a curse.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS Their love is deep. Rasa being the Captain of the Guard is the definition of strength and honor. But for Isolde she would give up everything. Isolde comes off as more fragile in appearance (she is not) so her love seemed like a soothing whisper. But together they would take down all their adversaries. ”A reflection of what is behind the eyes. The wishes that I make in the dark when I want to be with you." - Isolde "In the dark. We will find a way" - Rasa
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK I loved the journey and the cast of characters. The world building was easy to follow and the writing was beautiful. ”Wherever you go I will follow, always I will follow.”
MY FAVORITE PART- IF IT IS NOT TOO SPOILERY Always my favorite part is when love wins. That is at the end when they defeat all the odds. And Rasa can’t believe it is over and that she is with her love. ”My heart bond to you as long as I am alive.”
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE Honestly, there was nothing about this book I did not like. Usually, I like more spice in a book. But this one had such a strong storyline with a beautiful sprinkling of their most tender moments.
TROPES Warrior, Against all odds, I'd d!e for you, I'd k!ll for you

”A reflection of what is behind the eyes. The wishes that I make in the dark when I want to be with you.”.
When I first heard of the premise of this book, ‘sapphics and swords’, I didn’t think I could be more excited. Then I read it and I realised I was wrong. It was exquisite. Surpassing all expectations, the way in which this tale unfolded was simply wonderful.
I absolutely adored the writing style, different from the usual books I read, in its constant POV shift, giving the reader a completely immersive experience. You weren’t just enveloped into one character, you were all of them, every thought, perspective and desire. Brilliant.
The story, without spoilers, is a ladyhawke retelling with a sapphic lean and it is glorious. The connection between Rasabel and Isolde is explored on every page. The pining, the love, the desperation combined with the subtle and innocent displays of a connection so deep, it can withstand anything.
Blylyn is a fantastic, cheeky, outgoing, down -on-her-luck ‘little thief’ who stumbles upon the discovery of Rasabel and Isolde’s unusual situation. The humour, the devotion and the ‘storytelling’ she possesses is a lovely addition to the tale.
The way this story unfolded was brilliant, the pacing, the descriptions, the characters, everything. Of course, now I want to take up several new hobbies, archery and ‘buffing’ up being just a couple because, if I’m not desperate to be like Rasabel, I don’t know what I am!
In all seriousness, this was an absolute delight to read. I was lucky enough to receive an arc in exchange for an honest review and shall now end up in a deep dive of her back catalogue!
I just finished listening to Behind the Eyes by Sharon K. Angelici, and it was such a captivating experience. The story sweeps you into a medieval world of magic and longing, and the pacing felt fastspeed—I was pulled along effortlessly, never wanting to pause.
The audiobook is deeply emotional, balancing heartache with hope, and every moment between the characters felt authentic and intense. It’s beautifully well written, with prose that paints vivid imagery and dialogue that lingers long after the chapter ends.
Jessie Elwyn delivers great narration, breathing life into Rasabel, Isolde, and Bylyn, and making the tension and tenderness resonate even more.
As a sapphic romance, it shines with both passion and vulnerability, offering a refreshing take on love that defies curses and expectations. The fantasy elements are rich but never overwhelming, perfectly complementing the romance at the heart of the story.
Fans of the film LadyHawk will recognize the inspiration, but this retelling transforms it into something uniquely powerful and unforgettable
This book is chock full of potential, from the characters, to the storyline. That said it has some issues. It’s choppy, especially the beginning. So much was missed in the development of the whys and hows. I went and filled in beginning of the book as I was reading the middle and end. If those development points had been incorporated into where they chronologically should have occurred it would have been so much better. The flashback fill in with tiny blurbs later in the book just felt like I was cheated. Three stars for having the basis for a great story. If the author ever revises this I’d be up to give it a reread.
“Their mouths were a breath apart as Rasa hesitated. “I fear I no longer know how to kiss you,” Rasa admitted. The kiss was gentle, as tentative as their very first. Isolde smiled. “My lips say you do.” Her fingers traveled into the tangle of long hair. “Overcome that fear, Rasabel, and kiss me again.”
This was brilliant. I will admit it took me a bit to get into the way the story was unfolding with the various timelines and povs but once I got the hang of it I couldn't put it down! Jessie Elwyn was excellent in her narration as usual!
This was slow to start, but incredibly entertaining. I know nothing of the ladyhawke story, so this was all new to me and incredibly heartfelt. This is a poetic and tragic retelling with a sapphic twist and I absolutely loved it.
The stunning cover of Behind the Eyes immediately captured my attention, and from the moment I started reading, I was completely immersed. At its core, this is a love story brimming with action, drama, suspense, a formidable villain, and a hint of magic. I highly recommend giving this one a whirl!
Audiobook Addition: Jessie Elwyn is a new-to-me narrator who perfectly captures the whimsical and emotionally charged essence of this story. Her varied character voices make it easy to distinguish who’s speaking, and even though I had already read the book, I was completely captivated by her narration.
The absolutely stunning cover drew me in, and the author's fast-paced storytelling kept me hooked. I rarely read blurbs when choosing a book because I like to go in knowing as little as possible, so I was delightfully surprised when I realized this action-packed sapphics-with-swords novel was a retelling of Ladyhawke. Ms. Angelici captured all the same heartfelt romance, swashbuckling action, and dreamy, medieval aesthetic as the timeless tale, only made better by the sapphic WLW twist at the core of this poignant love story. Fantasy and adventure lovers who always felt Michelle Pfeiffer could have done better than Rutger Hauer—here you go!

As a big fan of Sharon Angelici's Maker Series, I was excited to receive an ARC of this new release! This wonderfully paced, classic retelling didn't miss the mark. For fans of fantasy, medieval intrigue and magic, this sapphics-with-swords adventure should be your next go-to read.
