What if you had to secretly date your soul mate because he's already fake dating his ex?

The night Alex and I almost died, we forged a bond that time couldn't break. He was an angsty teenager then, lost in a world of stained t-shirts and video games. Nine years later, he's a star athlete with a polished exterior, but I see the same vulnerable soul beneath the surface.

I'm strong enough to handle Alex's friends, his demanding ex, and my own secrets that I haven't told anyone. All to keep the other half of my soul alive, him. Even when his sister bullies me. Even when our relationship has to be kept secret so he can temporarily pretend to date his ex.

But as our relationship grows more complicated, I wonder if my heart can withstand the emotional toll of keeping it hidden.

I'm fine, until I'm not.

About the author

Audrey Halliwell

18 books115 followers
Audrey Halliwell writes messy, twisty, can’t-look-away romance.

The kind where the other woman has secrets, the ex-fiancé still lingers, and the plot twists slap you like a betrayal at brunch. If you’ve ever screamed at your Kindle, rewritten endings in your head, or fallen in love with a character who absolutely should’ve known better, you’re in the right place.

Audrey blames her obsession with dramatic romance on her mother—she was watching soap operas in elementary school and devouring V.C. Andrews and Gossip Girl by middle school. Armed with a college degree and an unapologetic love for emotional chaos, Audrey writes stories where women stumble through heartbreak, betrayal, and obsession before reclaiming their power.

Her heroines might be messy, but they always find their glow-up.

When she’s not plotting angsty love triangles or crafting emotionally ruined men with great hair, you’ll find her designing something on Canva or rereading her favorite tropes like it’s self-care.

I’m really not sure how to rate this one. I was intrigued by the blurb because it screamed OW drama… my catnip, but the execution felt odd at times. Mostly because the author gave the mc’s VERY serious and heavy baggage but paired it with a non-serious plot with OTT drama from soapy-esque secondary characters (crazy ex GF, snooty sister, overly mean classmates, H’s outrageously patronizing family). It just never meshed.

The book opens with Daphne coming to college and discovering that Alex moved on with her nemesis, Celeste. The two had a close friendship/crushy love but were separated while they were still young (maybe 13ish) after a traumatic event. Celeste and Alex’s sister, Victoria happen to be her roommates and HATE her, so that’s not real fun for Daphne.

Like the blurb says, Alex decides he wants to be with Daphne but is a TOTAL pushover when it comes to Celeste and agrees to pretend date her until Homecoming forcing Daphne to keep their relationship a secret. It’s quite melodramatic at times, but there were some yummy drama bits in there too, it just wasn’t squeezed to its full potential because Alex and Daphne were so weak.

There’re several issues that kept this from being great for me.

❌ Alex was too wimpy and put Celeste’s feeling ahead of Daphne’s too many times. He also failed every opportunity given to show the reader that he would prioritize her.
❌ Daphne was too passive and put up with way too much.
❌ The separation/relationship with OW was too long (8 years).
❌ Alex’s actions/explanations were inconsistent. After being told and shown ¾ of the book he felt he owed it to Celeste, it suddenly without any supporting evidence switched the last few chapters to justify his poor treatment of Daphne. .
❌ Their story needed an epilogue. There were too many loose ends with Celeste’s fate, his family’s reactions, if Alex stood up for her to their peers, etc.

Bottom Line- It was just meh for me. The ingredients were there for drama, but it was always neutralized by either sympathy for Alex’s emotional baggage or Daphne constantly giving in. I appreciated where the author was trying to go, but by making them both so emotionally fragile neither had any fight in them which didn’t make for riveting material. For me, this would’ve worked better had Daphne pushed back more often and followed through rather than just letting it go or instantly forgiving him until the final straw. It would’ve made the rest of the book more enjoyable.

*Random - This reminded me a smidge of Suddenly Forbidden with the reuniting at college with the H having moved on, but the setup was different. It also brought to mind I Saw You that had another fake dating situation that the OW wanted to become real and was manipulating the H, so if you like this dynamic, you could check either of those out.

Depressing, about depressed people 😑

It was too much and we don't have an explanation about his depression, about why he didn't love Celeste after 9 y, about how it is possible for Daphne to love him after seeing him a few times when she was 12.

It was not angsty as the title says, it was cringey and odd

What I loved: I loved the ow drama that came from Alex(H)’s ex girlfriend. I also liked how Alex's sister help Daphne at the end standing up to her father.

What I didn’t like: First, I didn’t like how Alex just let the ow get away with so much. He said he loves Daphne but his behavior never showed it and unfortunately at the end I still didn’t believe it. I feel like if his sister didn’t tell him she was ok with him dating Daphne he never would have went after her (if you call it that). The contradictions with what the ow said and did and him telling Daphne one thing but doing another just didn’t scream love to me. Second, after putting Daphne second, allowing the ow to do the things she did and going to the party, Alex should have grovel a hell of a lot more. Him making her meals just didn’t cut it for me. Daphne forgiving him so easily annoyed me especially the part when she left his parents house and he stayed. Her not making him beg for her forgiveness but instead gave him a free pass because of his depression, made her look like an idiot. Third, Daphne’s mom teaming up with the ex just made the story worst for me. Whenever something dramatic like that happens with one of the main characters only for that character to forgive the other is an easy cop out story line to me(that is a me thing so if you are ok with that this book should be good for you). Fourth, I would like to know if Alex slept on the floor that night with the ow or how was homecoming with them, what happened when Daphne left his house but he stayed (I did skim some so maybe the last was answered but the other two wasn’t). Lastly, no mention of condoms or birth control and we definitely know he was sexually active with the ex.

***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: Depression with suicide thoughts, attempted suicide (H), abuse and attempted murder on a child(the h), bullying, ow drama. h meets H when he is being bullied, both having a crush on each other. H is depressed and having suicide thoughts. He is from a rich family but doesn’t have any friends and stutters. h’s home life is horrible and her mom abuses her because when the grandmother died she gave the h her money to continue to play the harp. H’s family especially the sister doesn’t like the h. h plays the harp better than the sister and because of that the sister is jealous. When h goes to see the H after her mom tried killing her, she finds the H hanging in the closet. h saves the H and right afterwards the h is moved into a foster family never seeing the H again until nine years later. Since then the H started dating the popular girl and started playing football, he became popular. h stills has a crush on the H and is upset that he is dating the mean girl, who is also the sister’s best friend. h unfortunately had to share a dorm with them both including another girl who is friends with the h. The girlfriend and the sister bully the h. H seeing the h knows he can no longer date the girlfriend because he wants the h. H breaks up with ow but she asks him to pretend until after homecoming. H agrees because he feels like he owes the ow and starts to secretly date the h. h is ok with it and very understanding because she loves the H. Ow causes lots of problems by continuing to be all over the H even kissing him in front of the h. H constantly puts the ow and her feelings over the h. When H lies and tells the h that he has to meet his father and instead he goes to a party with ow, she has enough and breaks up with him. H and h get depressed and hide out in their rooms. H’s sister goes to him and he tells her about the h. She tells him he is an idiot and H decides to get himself help and fight for the h back. H starts therapy and starts cooking for the h. He cuts the ow out of his life and the sister tells ow she had to find somewhere to stay. h goes about her life. H goes to see the h’s recital instead of a football fundraiser. h’s mom is also there and tries to kill the h. H saves her. HFN with them dating.

Final thoughts: This was a little rough for me but I will try reading another book of hers since this was my first book by this author.

Thank you so much for reading 𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙀𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝!

There's a stigma around mental health that if you appear fine, you must be fine. That's not always true. Alexandru has struggled with depression and suicidal ideation all his life. He had a suicide attempt and didn't tell anyone. On the outside, he appears as if he's happy and healthy, but on the inside, he's not. This is not rare in the mental health world. Depression doesn't care if you should be happy. Sometimes it's always there, and life is about managing it.

In certain regards, I made Daphne and Alex the same, but with different types of depression. Growing up, Daphne had situational depression. It was largely environmental and when her threats were taken away, so was a large chunk of her depression. However, Alex's always remained. Some days were better than others. Some days, it was almost gone. But, unlike Daphne's, it's part of who he is. Brief depression vs. chronic. Resiliency vs. poor coping and masking.

Unfortunately, I didn't explore a key topic. It is how social class affects access to mental health services. Perhaps this will be a theme in a different book.

On my last thread of points I want to make. I based Alex on a character from another book (I took great liberties, don't worry). So much of what both Daphne and Alex have felt are feelings I pulled directly from myself. If you read "Never Enough" and connect with a character, know that others feel the same. There ARE people that care, even if they're strangers.

Not quite enough

This book…I don’t know what to say. The concept was interesting and the exploration of mental health was really important. I wanted to enjoy it more than I did, honestly. But there were significant problems with editing (including an entire chapter being repeated) that detracted too much from the story. I also found the grovel arc not quite sufficient for my liking. I would have loved to see an epilogue that looked at the aftermath as things ended pretty abruptly.
All up, there was a lot of potential…but it wasn’t enough.

This one made me sad, then a little angry and then after a little more of a roller coaster ride made me happy.

Daphne and Alex are complex and both have backstories that are tough. So please check the trigger warnings on this. I think it was handled beautifully.

Alex is quiet and shy but is being someone he isn’t for appearances, due to his insecurities he is easy to manipulate at the expense of Daphne. Our h is smart and talented but fell in love and can’t shake it. These two meet when they’re 9 and inherently know they’re meant to be in each other lives. They go through so much together so quickly that truly binds them. But at that point in time it not to be.

The journey they go on is rough and they have to overcome so much drama from many different angles from parents expectations, a sibling that thinks she knows best but is redeemable to an ex our bat crap crazy and I wanted to slap silly.

In the end I was won over by this feeling like a love does conquer all kind of story. I would love to read an epilogue and we should hopefully be getting at some point.

All in all I loved it. I’m a sucker for OW drama with no actual on purpose cheating and this hit the angst spot in my heart.

Please don’t forget to check the trigger warnings!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Tropes:
OW drama (no cheating technically)
Betrayal/Grovel
Second chance
Mental health
Speech impediment
Bullying

Rating: 5⭐️
Spice: 2 🌶️ 🌶️
Darkness: please read TW it is important there is talk about attempted suicide, talks about depression

NOTE

I haven’t read yet. Cheating story, sorta. Fake dating an ex the MMC continues sexual relationships with her while secretly dating and being sexual with the FMC.

I don’t know if it is full P in V. As some FB reviews saying it was other stuff instead.

If you're looking for angst and hurt, this is a good book to read. I wish the heroine had more backbone but really, if she had,we won't get this much angst. Root for the heroine not the hero because, as always, can anything ever be good enough grovel?

First thank you for the ARC! I have mixed feelings about the book. Daphne should stand up for herself and dont let alex keep stepping over her. I felt like she was a doormat for Alex. He couldn’t chose between OW or Daphne. Daphne always when after him and he doesn’t defend her in anyway. He only care about him self and OW and my opinion she deserves better. And i think he should grovel little more. Also his sister name is Victoria or veronica?

Alex and Daphne meet briefly when they are younger and bond. Daphne literally saves Alex's life but the next day she is gone and they never see each other again until 9 years later when Daphne transfers to the same university as Alex. She is relentlessly bullied by Victora and Celeste (who is Alex's girlfriend). Alex and Daphne are bonded and both believe the other is their soulmate. Alex drops Celeste quite quickly once Daphne re-appears but unfortunately, Celeste very easily manipulates Alex and out of a false sense of obligation he continues to pretend to continue to date her all while actually dating Daphne in secret. I enjoyed this read but there were a number of issues for me which prevented it from being a 4 or 5*.

A number of things are explained quite generally but I needed the detail for this to be higher rated.

1. Alex is a little too wishy washy for me when it comes to Celeste. I get that he perhaps has a false sense of obligation but one minute he says Celeste is shallow and he never loved her and the next he is going on about how he cares for her, doesn't want to hurt her and owes her his loyalty. We also get a front row seat to him lusting after Celeste which Daphne witnesses - no thanks! We also hear on a number of occasions how good they were together, they had a spark and how they used to be best friends but no further explanation - when did that stop? She is vapid and manipulated him from day which we are told - she moulded him into what she wanted him to be and he changed his entire person and went along with it because it's what he thought he wanted. It didn't make sense to me that they were "good" or best friends without explanation of what that meant? What did Alex see in her for all those years? We know that Celeste made him popular which stopped the bullying but I wanted to hear more reflection from him on how that was not the right reasons to get into a relationship with Celeste and the realisation that over the years he was never invested in their relationship? I appreciate he enjoyed the attention she gave him, it made him feel like she cared about him when he was vulnerable but that must have worn off pretty quickly? When did Celeste change if she was so wonderful to begin with?

2. Celeste and Alex are together for too long (9years) for it to be believable that he felt very little for her. He says he should have broken up with Celeste a long time ago but it's not explained well enough - I wanted to hear that it should have been done years ago or that he never should have actually started dating her in the first place. We hear from the sister in the last few chapters that him and Celeste broke up a few times over the years - that detail needed to be earlier and better explained. It was too long to pretend to be in a relationship.

3. Alex has depression and his whole life is an act - I wanted more detail and explanation on that. He says he's been unhappy for too long? Give me some detail and an explanation as to why he stayed with Celeste if he was so miserable - maybe he tried breaking up with her? Comfort? Loneliness? Did he enjoy the benefits? Distraction?

4. Alex suffers from quite severe depression and many of his decisions are attributed to that but it didn't totally work for me that he would manage to mask such issues for such a long period of time without them having affected his relationship with Celeste either?

I guess overall I failed to buy into how special Daphne was to him when he spent so long with Celeste and then continued to pander to her all while telling us how he cared about her and how she was loyal! We hear about how much he feels he owes Celeste although I did appreciate he saved some firsts for Daphne - a little more about what he never gave Celeste would have been great!! For me, there needed to be less reflection on Celeste and how good they once were together and more reflection of how they should have never got together in the first place or stayed together.

The sister also got off too lightly!

It deals with many triggers.
The hero attempts suicide when he’s 13, the heroine is 12 and she saves him.
He is always battling with depression. Severe depression.
The heroines mother tried to murder her drowning in the tub, when she was 12.
She and the hero were friends, she was fostered and her grandmother helped her.
So, basically they haven’t seen for 9 years, since he was 13 and she was 12.
I wouldn’t define this one as a second chance, because, even if the heroine had a crush on him and so did he, they were children and of course nothing happened.
They meet again when she’s 21 and he’s 22 in college.
He’s dating her nemesis, and his sister hates her, because she considers her her rival. Both are harpists, the heroine is more talented.
So, they meet again and the hero breaks up with his gf because he doesn’t love her snd seeing the heroine again he understands he loves her.
He tried to change and to become a popular jock, when he was a stuttering nerd, slightly overweight and with a passion for cooking.
His manipulative gf asks him to wait to make the break official, so she basically plasters herself on him making the heroine jealous.
In the meantime the hero asked the heroine to be his secret gf until he makes the break official.
Follows a lot of mistakes the hero makes because he doesn’t want to disappoint anyone, his parents, the grandma, the friends, his ex, his sister, so in the end the heroine dumps him.
After some mutual moping, he decides to win her back.
So, the hero suffers from severe major depression, he stutters and he has social anxiety. It’s a bit hard for him and I couldn’t judge him as harshly as I would have other heroes.
He’s weak, he doesn’t stand for his gf because he’s afraid to stutter, to be unpopular, to disappoint everyone.
Only in the end he decides to have therapy, and he acts like an adult and not like a scared child..
The heroine was stronger but it seems to me she was really traumatized by her mother and she was starved for affection. All the soulmate thing didn’t sound right to me, they were just two scared children who helped one another but I think they were better not together.
There’s too much baggage for both of them.
But the psychological pov was interesting.
Safety.
The heroine jealous is with a gf when they meet and he’s been with her for years, he leaves her though as soon as he meets the heroine again.
The heroine is not a virgin, I suppose she had other boyfriends before him.
There’s a lot of ow drama that was unnecessary imo.

As Usual, His Communal Abuse Is Excused As Mental Illness, Which Is So Fucking Ableist. Stigma? What Stigma? Mens Mental Health Is The Only Mental Health We Socioculturally Discuss

More "men aren't allowed to talk" when women are the gender that suffer most from cognitive decline.

Men are the most heard demographic of humans on the planet.

Remember, mentally ill people are too hypersensitive to sit there and hurt someone over and over like this.

This is an ableist myth than psychologists want to die. Mental Illness causes internalised impulse, self harm issues, not externalised issues like this.

But men get to pretend they are mentally ill when at most, they are emotionally stunted.

They have Blood Pressure issues, which can lead to a cognitive break if you hyperventilate hard enough, by choice.

It stinks watching him with his Emotional Support Network, something she does not have, and still deny her support and pretend a support network isn't the defining feature in mental wellbeing.

She had clear symptoms of CPTSD, which is repeated long term trauma, meaning she lets him hurt her and never recovers from that.

But this book is definitely for those abusers that use therapy to justify harming people, when thats not mental illness.

Thats privilege.

Reading him immediately, narcissistically frame himself in how she endures his abuse, and then pretend its mental illness, when its not.

She's mentally ill, he's just emotionally dysregulated from having a full belly, a support network and plenty of time to make up his own conflicts.

He reminds me of how my DMs and Inboxes are filled with men who can detect my CPTSD and are rushing to trauma dump, because they actually do talk, a lot.

Meh, he used her over and over, let Celeste plan her murder because he Neglected her over and over.

Remember ladies, longing isn't love.

Would have been nice to see her demand long term consistent change that facilitate she felt loved.

But this isn't a book about authentic mental illness, its about excuse the bully MMC who weaponises that he was bullied, to continue bullying her with his sister and Celeste.

Apparently Daphne deserves the consistenty but the author admits thats too much hard work, we have to internalise her HEA, much like Daphne does.

Fuck I wish he's died.

First off, I absolutely loved the love story between Alex and Daphne. The character building was incredibly well-done—both of them felt so real with their flaws, strengths, problems, and hobbies.

Alex comes from a wealthy family where lineage and success in their respective fields mean everything. Despite his life of privilege, the MMC struggles with deep depression, which has affected him since his teenage years. There’s one particularly intense scene about this, so I strongly recommend checking the content warnings before diving in. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Alex’s character, mostly because of how he handles his romantic and familial relationships. Honestly, he should have sought therapy and medical treatment way earlier.

The story itself is complex (I’m trying to keep this short, LOL). There are lots of flashbacks, but the main timeline focuses on when Alex and Daphne reconnect years later in college. Daphne had saved Alex’s life during their teenage years, but she disappeared right after. Since then, Alex started dating the OW and stayed with her for years. When Alex and Daphne meet again, both of them still have that same spark of passion and love, but Alex doesn’t tell Daphne that he’s still with the OW. And get this—Daphne, the OW, and Alex’s sister (who bullies Daphne along with the OW) all live together. Like, I could NEVER live with people who hate me.

Alex eventually decides to break up with the OW to be with Daphne, but even then, he keeps prioritizing the OW and pretending they’re still together. Obviously, this hurts Daphne a lot. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions as things unfold and everyone works through their issues—mentally and physically. There are so many layers to the plot, so please, please check the trigger warnings!

I really enjoyed the writing style and storytelling. That said, there were moments where I got super frustrated with the main characters because of their immature or inconsistent behavior. But overall, I’m recommending this book to everyone I know. Thank you so much for letting me read it early—I loved it!

This book has dark undertones of which the author has placed a trigger warning at the beginning. It may be difficult for people to read that have been bullied, abused (non-sexually) or have had suicidal ideations.

Daphne, Alex and Victoria meet as children. Alex and Victoria are high society; privileged children. Daphne comes from "the other side of the tracks". Daphne is a gifted harp player and Victoria is her rival and nemesis.

Tragic events happen one night wherein Daphne saves Alex and the next day she is gone. The story then starts up nine years later when they are all in college.

Daphne is attending through a scholarship. Victoria and her parents call her a charity case and treat her as though she is below them. Alex is no longer the nerdy kid constantly being bullied, but is a popular football star.

I had a hard time liking Alex initially. His sister and girlfriend are awful mean girls. He never stands up for Daphne. He keeps their relationship secret because he's been with his girlfriend for the nine years that Daphne wasn't around and goes along with her wanting to keep up appearances. Finally, Daphne has enough and breaks things off with him. She stood her ground because she deserves better. He eventually comes to his senses and starts treating her right.

There is a lot that goes on in this book. Both Alex and Daphne's secrets are brought out. Alex had no idea what had happened with Daphne. Victoria had no idea what had happened with Alex. The twist with Daphne's mother was good.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I just wish Alex had a stronger backbone, but I understand where his insecurities came from. He comes though in the end though, so it's all good.

Daphne and Alex are each other's best friend and protector. We don't get much of their backstory at the beginning, but it comes with flashbacks and inner thoughts. It's a story that flows around a life where depression and suicidal ideation are a constant; albeit, on simmer. Daphne rescued Alex at thirteen after he had lost all hope. Her unhinged mother had just tried to murder her by drowning her in the bathtub and she ran to Alex to find him in the closet... just in time. She is sent into the system and they lose track of each other, but nine years later they are together when she transfers to his college. Here is where the story lost steam and went a little off the rails. Alex has a girlfriend, Celeste, who is a cross between a Valley Girl and a bloodsucker. She is vapid, but her manipulation skills are epic. I really lost the ability to stay focused because I couldn't believe how horribly Alex allowed himself to be grossly manipulated. He was in love with Daphne, but couldn't bring himself to hurt Celeste, the one who had been with him for 8 years. He never loved her, but she gave him street cred by bringing him into the popular group. She was devious and didn't care who got hurt, as long as she got her way. Since he's always been in love with Daphne and finally got her back in his life, he's going to play it safe and keep his love for Daphne a secret, as he continues to fake date Celeste. (Figure that one out) There was so much toxicity among most of the characters, save for Daphne and Alex (most of the time.) The ending was chaotic with an attempted murder, a very long wait for the ambulance and a powerplay in the waiting room by the father of the victim. This is a difficult read that left me unsatisfied; actually, it left me sad. There is no happy ending in this story. There's an ending that is happy for now, but it was much too rushed and is crying for an epilogue.

This was a brutal read. Heartbreaking, emotional, and at times rage-inducing. 3.5 stars…

Alex and Daphne both have trauma in their past, and it has really shaped who they are.

A person with depression, Alex is very weak and I really struggled to like him. What he did to Daphne throughout the book was so hard to read. When they were together, they were sweet, and all things beautiful, but then involve his toxic ex-girlfriend (could you really call her an ex, though?), and I wanted to see his demise.

Daphne has never truly been accepted. In her desire for love, inclusion and happiness, she takes the dregs from him.

“… but since you insist on pleasing your ex-girlfriend over me, I’ll settle for what I can get.”

Daphne was a contradiction - so strong in ways, considering what she dealt with in her past, but this shaped what she thinks is acceptable. So, just picture my reaction when she finally found her spine, raised her head, and put her foot down.

“Well, he can think about Celeste and how happy he’s making everyone else but me.”

It did frustrate me that it wrapped up relatively quick after that. He needed to grovel.

Eden, her BFF is goals, Victoria needed to find her broomstick, but thankfully she did change… And Celeste, the psycho ‘ex’… glad she got her what-for.

Note, this does end in a HFN, so draw your own conclusions.

I’m going to pretend they dated for a couple of years, got married and had a couple of kids…. but knowing this story, there’ll be more drama…

So… what you’ll get in this…

Angst
OW drama
A weak(ish) heroine
A weak hero
Rage… lots of rage

Be warned… you’ll probably want to throw your kindle.

4 1/2 stars. I'm guessing based on the number of stars, that there are going to be some very critical reviews so I'm recording my feelings before being influenced by the ideas of other readers. The H comes from a wealthy, influential family. The h comes from an abusive mother in a trailer park and some years in the foster care system. The H suffers from deep depression. In an effort to remake himself from a stuttering dweeb who loves to cook, he joins the football team, becomes more muscular, gets contact lens and starts dating a cheerleader. He becomes popular but he feels like he is playing a role and meeting expectations of others so the blackness is still there. The H and h both narrowly avoided losing their lives as young teens and this became the basis of their living relationship. Eight years later, the h is in college on a scholarship and her grandmother's trust fund. The H and his cheerleader girlfriend (OW) are the campus golden couple. The OW and the H's sister bully the h especially when they end up being assigned to the same dorm rooms.
After reconnecting with the h, the H breaks it off with the OW who pleads with him to pretend to still be a couple until homecoming in order to save face. The H stupidly agrees. He begins a relationship with the h but asks to keep it secret for a few weeks. The h stupidly agrees. This sets the h up for heartbreak as the OW flaunts her relationship at every opportunity. For me, the mental illness of both the h and H provided some leeway for their spineless behavior.

Never Enough had the perfect amount of angst and frustration. There were times where I really wanted to smack the MCs due to their immaturity. However, in a way I did appreciate it because this showcased their flaws and turned them into truly multi-dimensional characters.

I was grateful was how the author the author portrayed mental illnesses and speech disorders. Despite the H working on managing them, it doesn’t ever just go away and we saw that and understand those struggles and insecurities. We saw how these traumas moved or affected the plot, making you feel raw and emotional.

My biggest gripe is that we don’t get an epilogue nor do we really get closure for a couple of storylines. However, the author does explain why she ends it as a HFN and some of it makes sense due to where the MCs were emotionally at that point. Normally, these things frustrate me and I would remove a star, but AH said that she will most likely write something later on. So for now, I’m reserving my normal approach to rating books.

There are major triggers in this book, but it was beautifully written. If you can handle them, I definitely recommend reading it.

Never Enough by Audrey Halliwell was my first read by this author and it captivated me from start to finish. This is an emotional, touching and angst-filled romance with other woman drama. Alex and Daphne met when they were young. Friends with a connection, both were dealing with their own trauma and circumstances and yet, found some solace in each other. Years later, they find each other again in college. Now, Alex is popular, dating the it girl and playing football. By all appearances, his life is great. Daphne is following her dreams, even as her nightmares haunt her. She is determined to move forward. She was strong and determined with a touch of vulnerability. What I liked most about her was her willingness to move forward.

Once they are in each other lives again, it’s hard to stay away from each other. The chemistry and connection they share is undeniable. They want to be together, but so much stands in their way, including his not so ex-girlfriend. Will he lose what matters most to him? Now everything is complicated and there is no way someone will not be hurt. Will they find a way to be together? I truly enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading more from this new-to-me author.

Happy reading!

This is was captivating of an page turner and the suspense was intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn't even put it down. Daphne and Alex that connection between them was sexual tension. When they meet the sparks had ignited a feeling of emotions in their heart and soul. They couldn't fight the temptation for much longer as they gave into the passion and chaos of drama. They were falling in love with each other. Twists and turns in this dark romance love story.
I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed.

Never enough is the story of Daphne and Alex. It reads as a second chance of sorts. Both characters are complex with deep rooted childhood trauma.

Daphne’s love for Alex is selfless. Which is proven by the countless times she bends over backwards for the kid, whereas, Alex prioritized his sister and Celeste. Thankfully, he gets it together towards the end.

The author portrayed mental illness and speech impediments in a way that resonates well with the audience. Please check the trigger warnings.

The h is interesting. The H? Not so much…

I’m thinking that a H who did what he did, was weak. And the sister’s friend sounds awful. Duck lips due to filler? How is that attractive? And the “keep it secret” thing was awful too.

This must be a “me” thing because I can’t relate to these characters at all. To have that mother be so completely unhinged to the point of trying to kill her is something I have never, ever experienced.

The writing is fine, technically. I just can’t …

KU read.

Not a full review

Don't remember if the description mentioned these characters are in college. I, personally, am not interested in reading about college kids. I did try reading it but this author struggled with dialogue, meaning there hardly was any. Frustrating reading a book when the thought life takes over the whole book and readers don't get to see a character unfold through interaction with others, conversations, humor, etc. Thought life just took over this book so I just skimmed so I can't give a full review.

Didn't like it at all, depressing doormats who treat each other like the last priority and let everyone else in their life walk all over them or bully them and each other despite being "so in love" the OW drama and mean sister and controlling family seemed way over done and unbelievable. The MMC was weak AF and spent the whole book with his ex rather than his "love" and the FMC let anyone and everyone walk all over her.
