A book for the coolest grandpas and grandmas everywhere!
Grandparents love to rock every way they can—whether it's by singing out loud, dancing to a song in their hearts, or just living their best lives!
From the musical team of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo comes a lyrical read-aloud that celebrates all kinds of grandparents from all walks of life—from plumbers to yoga instructors to…rock stars!

During the 1980s, Benatar had two RIAA-certified Multi-Platinum albums, five RIAA-certified Platinum albums, three RIAA-certified Gold albums, 17 Billboard chartings and 15 of them being Top 40 singles, including the Top 10 hits, "Hit Me with Your Best Shot", "Love Is a Battlefield", "We Belong" and "Invincible". Other popular singles include "Heartbreaker", "Treat Me Right", "Fire and Ice", "Promises in the Dark", "Shadows of the Night", and "All Fired Up". Benatar was one of the most heavily played artists in the early days of MTV. She was the first female artist to play on MTV, performing "You Better Run".
Delightful, cute, beautifully illustrated and fun! My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! was pure joy! I love that this book depicts a wide range of grandparents from differing walks of life and cultures. This book has diversity and a cool message that grandparents can be fun, have talent and rock! That grandparents can be and do anything but the main thing they do it to love YOU! 🎸🎤🎶📕❤️🥰
This was a beautiful children's picture book with fun rhymes and pictures! This book encourages children to sing loud and proud, and that grandparents are cool! It depicts the bond between children and their grandparents.
It also makes a great book for young readers to read when their grandparents are not reading this book to them!
High points for showing diversity, an individual in a wheelchair and the various ways grandparents and grandchild interact. 🎶❤️🥰
Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Kids | Sourcebooks Jabberwocky and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
When I saw the new children’s picture book by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, I literally got All Fired Up! I grew up listening to Pat Benatar and her guitar-rocking husband, so I eagerly began reading this book.
Despite this power couple’s celebrity status, though, I still remain a critical reader. However, I was really surprised at how well this book was written by them, primarily because many celebrities have written picture books that are downright awful. Some think that because they’re celebrities that they can publish anything and it will be a hit based on their name alone. News Flash: That’s not how it works.
This book was everything that I expect in a picture book for children. The text is an appropriate length but what I love about this book is the unbelievable amount of diversity that Benatar and Giraldo incorporated in the text. For example, when they discussed the grandparents’ names, they included a wide range of names from different cultures and ethnicities, including Jewish, Latino, and Asian, among so many others. Although they didn’t include the Lakota name for maternal grandparents Unci and Caca (what my son calls my parents), they went out of their way to be inclusive by letting readers know that each child has special names for their grandparents.
Illustrated by Tiffany Everett, I couldn’t have asked for better illustrations. Everett did a fantastic job with this book and on every page, she really highlights the diversity found everywhere. Besides just showing a variety of different skin colors, Everett went further by also incorporating a child in a wheelchair.
This picture book is a smash hit and one that I’m certain both parents and children will appreciate. Benatar, Giraldo, and Everett really went above and beyond my expectations and prove that, yes, a really talented set of celebrities can indeed write superbly well for small children—something that many people do, but that not everyone knows how to do well.
I received an ARC of “My Grandma and Grandpa Rock!” by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo from NetGalley, Sourcebook Kids, and Sourcebooks Jabberwocky in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
A joyful, heartwarming shout-out to grandparents who truly rock!
This fun read-aloud is full of rhythm, love, and big grandparent energy—perfect for cozy moments and laughs with your grandkids. The lyrics by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo are playful and sweet, and the colourful, inclusive illustrations make every page pop. The cover is just as fun and full of life as the story inside!
I can’t wait to purchase a copy for my granddaughter—she’s going to love it!
Expected Publication Date: September 9, 2025
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this delightful book. Highly recommended!
Well, of course they do if they’re Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo! Partners in performing, composing and marriage, the two have written a heart-warming picture book featuring a multi-cultural assortment of rock-and-roll grandparents for whom “[m]usic is something that they both adore. (Besides us, of course, who they love even more!)” But fear not! The rock legends also send a shout-out to all grandparents everywhere.
This picture book, lovingly illustrated by Tiffany Everett, should not be limited to nostalgic Boomers gifting their grandkids. It’s a wonderful message of love between generations that’s highly recommended.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Sourcebooks Kids and Sourcebooks Jabberwocky in exchange for an honest review.
My first thought when I saw this book was, oh, great another celebrity written picture book. My second thought was, wow, are Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo old enough to be grandparents? They are by the way. Benatar is 72 and Giraldo is 69.
As for my worries that it was just another celebrity book, that is something to worry about, but the rhymes were cute, and the message was as well. Basically that we all do stuff that gives us joy, and connects us to our grandkids. And you don’t have to be Benatar and Giraldo to impress your grandkids.
Bright pictures, cute rhymes, this book would be fun to share with grandkids. The dancing, singing kids and grandparents look as though they are having a blast.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book will be published on the 9th of September 2025.
This was really cute! I picked this up after reading Between a Heart and a Rock Place: A Memoir, which I highly recommend if you enjoy Pat Benetar's music or are interested in the inner workings of the music industry.
I expected it to be more about Pat Benetar and Neil Giraldo, however it is more about how grandparents come in different shapes and sizes and they all rock because they love their grandkids. While Pat and Neil make music and travel for their jobs and actually rock, it doesn't mean that baking with your grandma or fishing with your grandpa or whatever they do with you is any less cool. This had a wonderful message and the art was lovely. It encompassed lots of different cultures and did not focus on the rockstar lifestyle. Grandparents are cool no matter what as long as they provide love and support and i 100% agree with that sentiment!
This is one of the cutest kids books I’ve seen in a while, which is saying something considering I read one to my kids every single night since they were born!
I will definitely be buying this one for my kids to give to their grandparents for Grandparent’s Day!
Thank you to Sourcebooks Kids|Sourcebooks Jabberwocky for the chance to read and review this eARC - my kids and I absolutely loved it!
What a beautiful, delightful, touching, heartwarming, and inspiring book for children and grands! Penned by Rock power couple Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, illustrated by Tiffany Everett, this picture-and-text encourages children to recognize that no matter a grandparent's vocation or appearance or physique or style of creative interests, that grandparent's goal is to love grandchildren! And every grandparent, in their own way, ROCKS!
This terrific story by famed rockstars Pat Benatar and her husband Neil features a diversity of grandparents and what makes them special. The illustrations are colorful and the rhyming narrative pulls readers through the story like a drumbeat. Geared for kids from 3 to 8 and the adults -- especially grandparents -- who love to read to them.
I loved this book. I am about to be a grandmother for the first time. I love that this book describes grandparents in fun ways. Grandparents can still go places, do things, have cool styles, and have interesting jobs,. I will definitely be reading this one to my grandbaby.
I am always hesitant to read books authored by celebrities, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one! While Pat and Neil are definitely the stars of the show in this, the book does a wonderful job of showcasing different types of grandparents, including various occupations and nicknames.
This is the perfect tribute to grandparents, and highlights how important they can be in a child's life.
My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! was a read now on NetGalley and I had to read a book with that title because MY grandma and grandpa rock! Plus, who wouldn’t want to read a book by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo?! Even though I don’t have any kids to share it with, I still could relate to the book because my grandfather was in a rock band and my grandmother helped him roadie! My grandparents always had rocking taste in music, and as bikers I always thought they were super cool and unique grandparents.
I loved the message this story sent of how different families look and how we’re all united in our love for our grandparents, who can be anything! I will highly recommend this book to my friend’s kids!
A book for the coolest grandmas and grandpas everywhere! From one of rock’s great power couples, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo comes a lyrical read-aloud that celebrates all kinds of grandparents from all walks of life- from plumbers to yoga instructors- to rock stars!
This originally appeared in Grandpappy's Corner at The Irresponsible Reader. --- WHAT'S MY GRANDMA AND GRANDPA ROCK! ABOUT? This is a very sweet tribute to grandparents—not just your traditional older adult being kind and making cookies, or whatever. But grandparents who have a passion, who share it with their grandchildren—whether it's being a musician—professional or otherwise—or any other number of professions. (although the book does understandably lean toward musicians)
The one thing this book stresses most of all is the thing that unites every grandparent—their love and affection for their grandchildren—which is what really rocks.*
* Yeah, that's a cheesy and corny line. But a book this pleasantly sappy brings it out in a guy.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ART FOR A MINUTE I don't know if I can defend this, but when I saw this cover on NetGalley's page, the grandparents in the middle of the image made me think of Love Händel (or at least Bobbi Fabulous), and that was more than enough for me.
I don't really see that now—unless I squint—but that doesn't matter. What I do see is just cute. You can see some samples at Everett's website. The characters of all ages/races/professions are warm and inviting. There's a good energy captured in the pages, and everyone seems happy and loving. A great way to depict the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren.
And, I tell you what, my 7-month-old grandcritter was captivated by the illustrations. He didn't seem to care about the text (shockingly) or even what I sounded like—but those pictures?
HOW IS IT TO READ ALOUD? I didn't really get into a rhythm when I read it to myself or the grandcritter. But I think that maybe if I read it a few more times, I'd stumble into it—I can't imagine these writers didn't write with one in mind. I just didn't find it.
What I did find was a very pleasant read, it worked really well to read aloud.
SO, WHAT DID I THINK ABOUT MY GRANDMA AND GRANDPA ROCK!? You may not believe me, but I honestly didn't realize who wrote this when I requested the title. I liked the title and the cover. I did feel a little silly when I saw "Pat Benetar" on the title page—"hey, that's just like that...d'oh!" This isn't a case of me chasing a celebrity author.
Really, I'm just a sucker for books about Grandparents lately (for some, strange, unknown reason), so the title and cover got me.
It's cute, it's sweet, it's heartwarming, it's fun, it speaks for every Grandpappy, Grandmammy, grand-père, avó, vavnI', Kristasof, or whatever you call a Life-Giver Unit, Previous Iteration in your house.
Parents should pick this up to give to kids so they can read it and melt the heart of grandparents. Fellow grandparents should pick this up to give to their favorite people to help them learn what the most important job of a grandparent is.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Sourcebooks Jabberwocky via NetGalley—thanks to both for this. Sorry that it's up late.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy
My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo and illustrated by Tiffany Everett is a picture book focused on the diversity of grandparents. Through lyrical prose, the narrator explores how grandparents are still people and how their most important job is loving their grandchild.
I have loved Pat Benatar ever since I heard We Belong when it was first released years ago. You best believe I immediately picked this up the second I saw it was available. Whether someone is a fan of Pat or Neil Giraldo, I think this is a great gift for any child and a great way to introduce them to two living legends in the music scene.
The art style is colorful and detailed with a very diverse cast. I loved how bold some of the choices were, such as a grandma with pink hair and a grandfather who appears to be on the younger side. Years ago, I met a grandmother who dyed her hair peacock blue as a fun summer project with her grandkids and she liked it so much that she kept doing it. We still have this idea of all grandparents having gray hair and ‘aging gracefully’ and I think we can age gracefully and be grandparents and still put our own stamp on how we present ourselves to the world, so I was happy to see that here.
I cried at the very end of the picture book when it very specifically said that a grandparents most important job is loving their grandchild. I then returned to the book several times over the course of the day and cried every single time I got to the end. I’m getting choked up just thinking about it. I think there is something so powerful about telling a child that they are supposed to be loved by their grandparents no matter what. Children deserve unconditional love and we should teach them that at a young age instead of teaching them to accept something less.
I would recommend this to guardians and educators of young readers who want to discuss the diversity of the world around us in a digestible way and to grandparents looking for a book to read to their grandchildren
A colorful, beautifully illustrated, and, yes, cute book for children. I've always like Benatar's music, so this collaboration with husband and music collaborator Neil Giraldo was a big yes from the time I spied it listed. While their role as rocking grandparents might seem to get the spotlight, I liked that it also made the point that no matter what your own grandparents might do, they all rock in their own ways. The illustrations add to that, depicting items symbolic of various roles non=rock-n-rollers might take, from being a rock star cookie maker, taking you fishing, teaching or, well, simply loving their grandchildren. Benatar and Giraldo depict different cultures, too, an added plus, as grandparenting has no boundaries. Kudos to them for empathizing that grandparents come in different guises, colors, and may speak different languages .... or like different music.
Bottom line, the text flows.... I'd love to hear it set to music .... and should be a hit with both child and grandparents everywhere. Lots of fun rhymes and illustrations showing not just the Benatar/Giraldo family in action but "average" grandparents with an emphasis that they all rock, too. Seeing the various names used to indicate Grandma and Grandpa was fun and their note that there are other names used out there, too, was a subtle nod to inclusion of all. Thanks #SourcebookKids and #NetGalley for allowing me this early peek at this delightful book by Benatar and Giraldo with the help of illustrator Tiffany Everett who brings the scenes to life. I always knew they rocked as musicians so it's nice to know they are rocking their grandparent roles, too.
Rock legends Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo aren’t interested in retiring. They want to keep rocking, even though they are now grandparents. And they have written a book about grandparents who rock.
And while they rock, literally, they understand that not all grandparents rock the same way they do. Some rock by singing or dancing, some by baking or teaching or working with computers. Some grandparents are still working and some are not, but their most important job is loving their grandkids.
My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is a charming book about kids and their relationships with their grandparents. It doesn’t matter what they’re called or what they do with their time, a grandparent’s love is a special thing, and this book celebrated that. It’s all about the love they share.
With warm, colorful illustrations from Tiffany Everett, My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! proves that it’s never to late to express yourself, through music, through words, or through love.
I grew up in the ‘80s, and Pat Benatar was one of the voices of the soundtrack of my life. She has been inspiring me for decades, and I was excited to see that she had written a children’s book with her husband Neil Giraldo. This book is so sweet and fun, and while I don’t have grandchildren myself, I was still inspired by this book, and I know kids of all ages will enjoy revisiting that grandparent/grandchild relationship.
Egalleys for My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! were provided by Sourcebooks Kids through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.
Grandparents come in all shapes, sizes, and demeanors, and they do not always reflect the quiet, reserved stereotype that is often depicted in popular culture. The narrator of this particular picture book has grandparents who are rock stars, who hear music in their minds and enjoy sharing that music with others. By sharing their passions with their grandchildren, grandparents are able to inspire and support the learning and growth of future generations through the lens of their own experience. And no matter whether a grandparent is a teacher, a plumber, or does not work anymore, they always have time for a phone call with their grandchildren. This charming picture book is a love letter to grandparents of all kinds. While the primary grandparents depicted are those who have a background performing rock music, many other faces and experiences are presented alongside them. Using brief, rhyming text with a variable meter, the narrative is as lyrical as it is thoughtful, reminding readers that grandparents have unique pasts that differentiate them from others. Throughout the book, digitally rendered illustrations accompany the text, and these images are the primary feature of each page. Showcasing people with a range of skin tones, ages, and abilities, the visuals seek to be inclusive in their design. Fun to hear and a joy to read aloud, this musical picture book is a delight for grandparents to share with their grandchildren, especially readers aged five or under.
I really loved this one! The showcase about how grandparents are all different yet love their grandbabies was so endearing!
MY GRANDMA AND GRANDPA ROCK is a picture book that talks about how grandparents all have special skills, whether that's playing music, baking, or being a plumber. It was very special to see how many different hobbies and careers were represented.
The art is very special- between the diverse characters, bright colors, and happy smiles, the artwork felt like it was made to be looked at over and over. One each page, there's something to new with each reading. The details that went into drawing faces, clothes, and backgrounds feels very intentional and dedicated.
I really enjoyed the rhyming scheme- it was catchy and had a really good beat to it. My five year old caught on and was very excited to see what happened on the next page. I also enjoyed that there were questions inside of the book, which lead to a more interactive reading experience for the reader. We were able to stop and talk about what my daughter's own grandparents do that's special, including one grandpa playing rock-n-roll. We especially liked the page where there are different names for grandparents around the world. It lead to a bigger discussion about languages, different countries, and different traditions.
My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is a joyful, energetic celebration of grandparents that will have readers of all ages smiling and tapping their toes. Rock legends Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo bring their musical flair to this charming picture book, delivering a heartfelt tribute to the many ways grandparents can be cool, caring, and utterly unforgettable.
Told in lyrical, sing-along style, the story honors grandparents of all stripes—whether they’re jamming in a band, teaching yoga, fixing pipes, or just showering their grandkids with love. The vibrant illustrations perfectly match the upbeat tone, making each page a delightful visual treat for children while sparking nostalgia and pride in adult readers.
This book shines in its inclusivity and modern take on what it means to be a grandparent today. It’s not just about baking cookies or telling old stories—these grandparents live boldly, embrace who they are, and inspire the next generation to do the same.
Whether you’re reading it aloud at bedtime or gifting it to a beloved grandparent, My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! hits all the right notes. It’s an exuberant love letter to intergenerational bonds and a reminder that no matter what stage of life you’re in, you can still rock!
For the kids in this book, Grandma and Grandpa are anything but boring - they dance, sing, play, and most of all - love and cherish their grandchildren. Even if they may not look like every other grandparent, they show up where it counts and help children learn to express themselves freely. Music is such an important part of life and growth, and sharing it with your grandparents can be such a fun, rewarding experience, as the book shows. The rhyming tale is reminiscent of music itself, and has a nice rhythm as you read that feels natural.
Kids will love the pictures, which show a variety of families in different situations that will be easy to connect with. A couple pages of the book are dedicated to all the different names that grandparents might be called in different languages, which is a cool touch. In one way, it gives children who don't speak that language a chance to learn something, and children who do speak that language get a chance to connect. I loved all the illustrations, which were richly detailed and perfect for reading over and over. I think this book would make a great gift to any child to share with their grandparents! 5/5 stars.
It’s hard to think of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo as grandparents, but I guess if I am that age, so are they. And I most definitely still rock.
I loved this book because when I was a child, we didn’t really see our grandparents as cool people. They were old, they moved slowly, and they wore old people clothes. But we Boomers aged differently- we didn’t go quietly into middle age. If Mick Jagger can still perform at 81, we can do anything. Can a person be a grandmother and still compete in an international art competition? Can a grandfather hike up a mountain in Puerto Rico? You bet your sweet bippy we can.
This book describes a number of grandparents and what they are doing, but another joy of the book is learning that children around the world and in different types of households have special names for their grandparents. It’s representation in a loving, joyful way.
What a great gift to share with a grandchild! Many thanks to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for the opportunity to receive this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was just a very fun book, with a great message and colorful illustrations, that I think any child would enjoy. I know my granddaughter did when I read it to her. It's a lyrical rhyming book that explains that all grandmas and grandpas have the music in them, even if they aren't rock stars like the authors. They may wear funny clothes and have funny hair, they may sing or play music, or just tap out melodies with their hands, but anyone can rock, because it's a state of mind, like feeling happy or being kind. What a great way to get that message across! The illustrations are colorful and vibrant enough to keep a child's attention, and they match up with the words on the pages beautifully.
All in all, this is a very fun children's picture book, with a great message, that I think any child would love to have. I highly recommend it.
5/5 stars.
*** I would like to thank NetGalley, Sourcebooks Kids, and Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, for the opportunity to read and review My Grandma and Grandpa Rock!
This fun and exciting picture book celebrating grandparents comes from the wife and husband team of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is one child’s story sharing about their musical grandparents, which morphs into a book that honors all grandparents everywhere.
With colorful artwork by children’s illustrator Tiffany Everett, kids will enjoy learning all about the musical duo beloved by their grandchildren. Following along with this rhyming story, parents who grew up listening to Benatar and Giraldo will delight in seeing them not only as talented artists but also as cherished grandparents.
While I feel this story could easily have been just as lovely if it simply focused on only the storyteller’s grandparents, it’s wonderful to see the authors recognize and share that grandparents from all walks of life, no matter what they do and no matter what loving nicknames we give them, are special.
If you and your children enjoy well-told stories with vibrant artwork, My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is an excellent choice.
'A lyrical read-aloud that celebrates ALL grandparents!' 'It doesn't matter what they look like or what they do because their most important job is LOVING YOU!' Filled with illustrations by Tiffany Everett that are exciting, perfect in bright colors, and FUN! Ideal for reading WITH someone or alone any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school, waiting room, or your local public library. I know it's a celebrity book and approached with a bit of caution, but despite a couple bumps with the rhyme flow mid-read, I thought it was fun and a plus for positive older adult representation. Picture book grandparents can often be a little two-dimensional and I like that this showed all kinds of grandparents living their best lives and being their own people. Also, for a community like mine where I see all kinds of different familial configurations, I appreciated the inclusivity in the language around the various names for grandparents and in the visual representation of grandparents.
Everett's illustrations are colorful and appealing, and the librarian in me appreciates the readability and positioning of the text, including the occasional isolated word---bonuses for supporting print awareness/motivation in pre-readers. Could be a fun pairing with one of Krosoczka's Punk Farm books, which I've always had a soft spot for.
Celebrate the special love between grandparents and their grandchildren with a picture book by musicians Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo who have also entered that wonderful world called “Grandparenthood!”
Told in 1st person, a child shares the uniqueness of her own grandparents (Pat and Neil) and then moves on to ask readers about their own grandparents and exclaims over the different names, jobs and appearances of grandmothers and grandfathers. Illustrator Tiffany Everett, using digital tools resembling gouache paints and colored pencils, show a wide variety of skin tones, hair styles and colors, sizes and shapes. Names for grandparents reveal different languages and cultures.
Wonderful picture book for the very youngest of listeners thru grade 2.
Thanks, Sourcebooks Kids, for sharing a print arc with me!
This book is filled with adorable cartoonish illustrations. It’s a sweet and joyful book about grandparents… perfect for Grandparents Day in September. It talks about the different names grandparents could have (I love that it’s inclusive), the different jobs they might have, and the fact that grandparents are cool in different ways. However, the rhyming isn’t quite smooth. I always read picture books out loud to see how they will sound to my Pre-K students. I love rhyming books, but didn’t feel that this had a perfect flow to it (and some of the “rhymes” were a stretch). I think it’s fun that it’s written by 2 rock artists, which may cause more grandparents to buy the book for their grandkids, but I’m not 100% sure I would purchase it for my classroom. Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Kids for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
I love rock music, so this title grabbed my attention immediately! The fact that Pat Benatar was one of the writers sealed the deal.
I am in love with this book. It includes so much and would be a great conversation starter with children. It is multicultural with illustrations and with the names of grandparents.
The illustrations are well done and colorful, definitely eye-catching!
It isn’t solely about grandparents who rock either. It is about all grandparents.
This is one I will keep in mind for future grandchildren.
Thank you to NetGalley, the authors, and the publisher for providing me with this ebook to read and review.
My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! by Pat Benatar and Niel Geraldo, with illustrations by Tiffany Everett, is not only a lyrical read-aloud storybook celebrating various types of grandparents from all walks of life, it is full of beautiful pictures sure to catch the eye and keep even the youngest in the family spellbound. This is a must have book for music lovers and musicians alike, and for grandparents in general. Members of the family might wish we grandparents be sedate and calm, but as this book shows, we will not go peacefully into retirement and grandparenthood. This book is a delightful, fun read, and sure t become a favourite on many families' bookshelves. Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC of #MyGrandmaandGrandpaRock. I know this is one book I'll be sure to share with out granddaughter.
