Wilderness Lost by Jane Catherine Rozek is the final instalment in the Spirit Quest trilogy. I relished the first two books. Now that I have read the final one, I have no hesitation in pronouncing three wins in a row for Rozek. The trilogy is not an autobiography as such but is based on her life. The protagonist gives up the trappings of her city life to live in the Canadian wilderness with the love of her life. He is away for long periods, and she faces many dangers head-on.
The book is beautifully written, and the depth of the author's emotional attachment shines through. The standout feature is the way the author, through descriptive prose and vivid imagery, gives life to the Canadian wilderness.
I am glad I read this trilogy, and I recommend that you do too.

Wilderness Courage by Jane Catherine Rozek is an awe inspiring autobiography about the author's adventures in Canadian wilderness. It speaks about the challenges one faces whilst living in the badlands but at the same time beautifies the landscapes that one inherits. What stands out most is the writing which is a perfect blend of prose and imagery. It seems that one is reading a dream layered with the good and the bad. Recommended read.

Wilderness Courage is a deeply moving and inspiring continuation of The Spirit Quest Series. What stood out to me most was how authentically the author portrays fear, resilience, and inner strength. The wilderness setting is not just a backdrop but a powerful element that mirrors the emotional and spiritual journey of the characters.

Jane Rozek’s writing is thoughtful and immersive, with vivid descriptions that make the reader feel present in each moment of uncertainty and growth. The story unfolds at a steady pace, allowing the emotional depth of the experiences to resonate rather than rushing through key moments. I especially appreciated how the book emphasizes courage not as the absence of fear, but as the willingness to move forward despite it.

Because the story is based on true events, it carries an added layer of sincerity and impact. The lessons about perseverance, trust, and self-discovery feel genuine and earned, not forced. This book is well-suited for readers who enjoy meaningful, reflective stories that combine adventure with personal transformation.

I would highly recommend Wilderness Courage to anyone looking for an inspiring read that stays with you long after the final page.

Away from the speed and pressure of modern living and into the windblown landscapes, peering canopies, and the untamed beauty of the Canadian wilderness, leaps a heartfelt autobiography from award-winning novelist Jane Catherine Rozek, “Wilderness Courage.” Written in the third-person narrative, this chronicle of survival, perseverance, family dynamics, and courage captures the fears, struggles, and simple relishes of a young woman who, fueled by her love for her husband, forges ahead against all odds to help him achieve an ambitious dream.

Kate had lived a carefree life and one without responsibilities before immigrating to Canada; before marrying Dave, a mountain man who worked as a logger to earn a living. With a stepson to take care of and a baby on the way, her life in the woods was hard enough, and her husband’s job, grueling and demanding, kept him away from home for long periods. Kate faced another challenge. Her spiritual truths often clashed with her husband’s old traditional Christianity making it hard for them to find common ground. Dave’s life ambition was to build a ranch for his family in the Canadian wilderness, a dream that seemed bigger than his abilities at the time.

The trials and hardships that engulf them in fulfilling Dave’s insatiable quest threaten to tear the family apart with Kate often holding on to her faith and her favorite verse in the Bible, Philippians 4:19, often repeating the words like a mantra. Would she eventually adapt to the off-the-grid lifestyle and live a life of unlimited potential? Would she learn how to activate her faith in the face of adversity? How much is she willing to do for the love of a man?

“Wilderness Courage” by Jane Catherine Rozek is an engrossing true story that brings the Canadian awe-inspiring landscapes to life in all its idealism and wonder through Rozek’s imaginative writing. I am a huge fan of hiking and this novel presented me with the armchair outdoor experience. The author pays close attention to detail, hampering extra caution to her emotions and those around her in various situations, their words, actions, and surroundings.

I developed a high level of respect for Kate and her survivability in the wilderness amid the hardships she faced being the heart of her young family and her husband constantly away. The unfiltered experiences that nature presented to them add to the book’s luminosity and power. From the howling of the wolves and the growling of the grizzlies under the full moon to the blistery afternoons and mid-summer sky mornings, journey with this family on an unforgettable adventure and real account. The book’s lessons on contentment, loyalty, and laughing at small pleasures will be an added bonus for the reader.

“Wilderness Courage” is a well written memoir that takes place deep in the Chilcotin Wilderness in British Columbia. Having lived in Prince George and travelled the highway numerous times from the lower mainland (Vancouver) to Prince George, I’m familiar with the area, but not the deep wilderness that Ms. Rozek shares within her memoir.

For those who love adventure or dream adventure, this book is for you. Ms. Rozek takes you by the hand and fills you with her day to day occurrences, and the strife and difficulties of life ‘off the grid’. The conflicts with the environment, between characters, and most importantly, within one’s heart, clear the path, as they did within the story through the forest, to finally achieve their joint adventure. Thanks Ms. Rozek for sharing your adventure with us.

From the very beginning, Wilderness Courage draws you into the rugged beauty and harsh reality of life in the Canadian wilderness. The author’s descriptions of the landscape make the setting feel almost alive. I found myself picturing the wild meadows, the forest edges, and every challenge that homesteading must bring.

The protagonist, Kate, is compelling. Her inner journey; balancing love, faith, hope and the sheer will to survive, is portrayed with heart and authenticity. Her struggles, both external (harsh climate, isolation, poverty) and internal (faith, belonging, longing for love and purpose) resonate deeply. That tension between longing for “tender romance” and the brutal reality of survival gives the story a strong emotional weight.

One of the strongest aspects of the novel is how it blends survival, love, and spiritual exploration. The wilderness becomes more than a backdrop, it almost becomes a character itself, challenging Kate, shaping her faith and beliefs, testing what she values most. The author succeeds in showing that sometimes simpleness and nature can lead to deep transformations.

That said, the pace can feel slow at times. Because much of the novel centers on daily life, survival and internal emotional / spiritual growth, there are fewer “fast-action” moments or traditional “thrills” that some readers expect from adventure novels. If you look for constant suspense or high drama, the slow burn of inner growth and gradual building may feel a bit mellow.

Overall, Wilderness Courage is a humble, heartfelt, and reflective story, one that asks the reader to consider what we value: comfort, love, faith, simplicity, and resilience. It’s a book that stays with you long after you’ve read it. I look forward to reading more from the author.

Wilderness Courage: Based on a True Story by Jane Catherine Rozek is an inspiring and deeply moving account that captures the raw beauty and unforgiving power of the natural world. From the very first page, Rozek draws readers into a gripping true story of resilience, determination, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.

What makes this book especially powerful is its authenticity. Knowing that the events are rooted in real life adds emotional weight to every challenge and triumph. Rozek’s writing is vivid and heartfelt, allowing readers to feel the isolation of the wilderness, the intensity of fear, and the quiet moments of reflection that shape true courage. The descriptions of the landscape are rich and immersive, making it easy to picture the setting and feel fully transported into the experience.

Beyond the adventure itself, Wilderness Courage is ultimately a story about inner strength. It explores themes of perseverance, hope, and the remarkable ability to endure even when circumstances seem impossible. Rozek does an excellent job of portraying not only the physical trials but also the emotional journey, which makes the story relatable and deeply human.

This book is both thrilling and uplifting. It reminds readers that courage is not the absence of fear, but the determination to move forward despite it. A truly inspiring read that will stay with you long after the final page.

Review of Jane Rozek’s Third Book in The Spirit Quest Series
An inspiring story of love, survival, hard work, and determination, set against the rugged and remote Chilcotin wilderness of British Columbia. Dave emerges as a tough, hardworking mountain man who confronts countless challenges and setbacks. With his expertise, he faces frustrations and sheer dangers head‑on, yet always manages to get the job done.
Kate, meanwhile, does not always have her needs met. She is left alone for long stretches with a stepson she adores, a toddler, and a pregnancy to manage. Despite these hardships, the couple perseveres. After enduring many trials, they begin to see financial windfalls and lucky breaks, with new opportunities in livestock, employment, and the promise of a proper house yet to be built.
I especially appreciated the map on the inside cover, which allowed me to trace the roadways and gain deeper insight into their remote location. It left me wondering whether their original “camp cabin” and outbuildings might still be standing today.

I kept reading this book because of Kate's character. She faced so many hardships in this story but i clearly felt her strength and her growth as she continued to look to god for answers. She faced numerious trials trying to make a life with her husband out in the wilderness, she has to dig deep and find her strength. And out there, it can get lonely, especially with a husband who is stubborn and may not understand certain things but her trust in god and her love for her family gave her the strength she neeeded. That part really stood out to me with the dynamic with her husband. Despite their fights, she acknowledges all of her husbands faults especially in a couple instances where i know most women would begin to have doubts and feel unsafe, but despite it all she sticks it out with him. That's what's important in a partnership and a marriage. But you see her turn to God more and more, and try her best. I really admired her strength and character, and reading her story was certainly inspiring.
