A covert job. An unwelcome hunky partner. Infiltrating a reality TV show, can this she-wolf in sheep’s clothing solve a deadly case?

Lacey Heart would rather kick ass than file reports. Focused on her work at the Preternatural Bureau of Investigations, the dedicated agent fumes when she’s sidelined to a desk job after disobeying a direct order. But she can barely contain her disgust when offered redemption… by taking a skimpy undercover role in the bikini-clad cast of a dating show.

Latching onto an uninteresting male to maintain the ruse, the blonde wolf-retriever shifter hunts for clues only to discover a missing contestant stone-cold dead. But she’s left breathless when a rugged tiger shifter joins the show and reveals he’s the slain woman’s brother—while threatening to blow her cover unless he’s allowed to help.

With her pulse racing and a slayer on the loose, can Lacey catch a killer?

Shifter Hearts is a page-turning standalone paranormal suspense novel with a swoon-worthy romance and HEA. If you like tough but vulnerable heroines, mysteries mixed with clean romance, and plenty of humor, then you’ll love E. G. Sparks’ glamor-filled fun-in-the-sun.

This book was okay it was fun but.
As someone who watched the movie Miss Congeniality like a 1000 times, this was just almost an exact copy. Yes it did have some changes here and there but maybe that was the love island part. In the end it doesn't really change the fact that it wasn't really original.

If you haven't watched Miss Congeniality (movie) Then yes I can imagine you would enjoy this book a lot.

The writing style is amazing no question about that.
But yea the story itself is just not original and a copy of a movie.

I would probably only recommend this book if you haven't watched the movie.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. None of my thoughts are influenced by the author, the publisher or Book Sirens.

This one is a hard one. I loved all the nods to the movie 'Miss Congeniality'. It made me smile so hard when they popped up, but unfortunately, I had quite a few issues with other parts of this story. I'll try to explain and to give this author fair due, I really found it a quick and good-enough read until I came to the end. Then, all of the things that I realised that I didn't like over-ruled all the things I did like.

I want to start that the book was a good homage to the movie. I know less about 'The Island' tv series (I know it exists but I have never watched it), and it didn't detract from my enjoyment of it. It was happening, but I kept going because of the 'Miss Congeniality' bits were in the forefront enough that I could focus on them. It may have followed most of the movie's points, but it didn't detract at all from the story.

I also liked how there were particular care made towards the relationships between the women in the competition. It felt that even though the girls were clearly 'fighting' for the men they were interested in, there were enough of them who were helping each other out. Just little scenes where the girls were desperately trying to find the right clothes for the next challenge and one or more of them would help them with the right make-up, or, gave them advice, or, even gave them one of their own outfits to help out. I really liked those touches.

Now, this leads to the characters. Unfortunately, since the guys featured less in the circle of the main character, as she clearly was focusing on two of them, they were less fleshed out. I didn't care much about them, and didn't really find any reason to. Other than one of the guys in relation to the girls, they didn't really seem to need any screen time. There wasn't any point in paying attention to them.

But the main character, and the girls around them. I liked them. I loved the Main Character (Lacey). Loved. Loved. Loved. She was everything I wanted in a FBI agent who didn't give a crap about anything 'beauty'. Her transformation, especially regarding her relationship with Corinne (beauty stylist), in her beliefs with 'beauty' was great to read. I could absolutely believe how it changed, and then became part of her personality but at the same time she kept her bad-ass side.

The girls around here were also the perfect blend of prickly, 'I'm not here to be friends' and the Labrador puppy girls who deserve to have a good man with them (if that's what they want). I enjoyed the interactions between Lacey and them, and between the girls themselves. It was one of my favourite parts.

Now, this is where it gets to be a bit tricky: the relationship between Lacey and the two men she has a will they/won't they. For one thing, I liked how this is where it differed slightly. While it hurt Lacey a lot, when she realised that this would never become nothing more than a tease, it was very real. The author had very carefully led breadcrumbs that kept the man true to who he really was. When it didn't work out, it made sense that it didn't.

On the other hand, I wasn't so sure about the other potential relationship. I felt that while it thankfully wasn't an immediate 'I love you' between them, at the same time I felt as though it need more time. It made think more of a Happy For Now, but not a Happy For Ever. And that would be fine, but I felt as though the author was trying to portray the two of them as an Happy For Ever couple. And I couldn't see that.

This one knocked a Star from the total, and why it's not a perfectly respectable 3 Star. It's alright, but I just couldn't get over the final stage romance (this is one of the most problematic points of the book), and 'The Island' parts because I really don't care about that. So, read if you want a quick read that blends a movie and a TV show, and has an ok relationship.

If you love miss congeniality, a sprinkle of spice and shifters then this book is for you! I was in from the tropes but after reading this book I can say it is top five of my favorite books from this year!! I was on the edge of my seat through most of the book trying to piece together what was going on to see if I could solve things before the MC but I couldn’t not. The twist was definitely not what I was expecting… The ending was good though not exactly what I was expecting but it fits the book so well!!

First off, let me say, I normally read dark paranormal romance,. This book was a enjoyable change for me. EG Sparks gave the readers lots of emotions in this book. I found myself tearing up in one instance and laughing. The next .The banter between characters was delightful funny and quirky at times, but I loved it. I mean come on we got romance mystery shifters of all sorts. What more could you ask for?

Lacey is an investigator who goes undercover on a reality dating show. The author describes this book as “Miss Congeniality meets Love Island” and I can’t think of any better explanation. It’s a fun shifter romance. It was such an enjoyable and funny read. This isn’t my normal kind of book so I was worried I wouldn’t like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I recommend if you’re looking for a lighthearted mystery romance.

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Book Summary:

Lacey Heart is a kick-ass agent for the Preternatural Bureau of Investigations. She's also a shifter, which makes her the perfect candidate for an undercover job. The job is…not exactly what Lacey's looking for.

There's something sketchy happening at a local dating show, so Lacey must now go undercover…as one of the contestants. She'll bat her eyes and play along, but only because she wants to get this case wrapped up.

My Review:

I picked up Shifter Hearts because I love the idea of a comedy shifter romance. I'll confess that shifter romances are a weakness of mine, so promising an even lighter take on them was just too tempting to pass up.

Shifter Hearts has two very familiar elements to discuss. The first is a clear foundation on Miss Congeniality. The book follows most of the high notes of this movie, which is pretty cute. Fans will appreciate all the hat tips.

I know the other foundational element of Shifter Hearts is The Island, but I know little about it. So, I'm sorry to report that any references made there went straight over my head. Thus, I can't comment on these references.

This book is full of romance tropes, from forced proximity to fake dating and everything in between. Some of my favorites include enemies-to-lovers, workplace crushes, and so on. It's worth the read for these tropes alone.

That said, I am team Lacey. This is one of those romances where I walked away wanting Lacey to stay single or take it slow, mostly because I wasn't enchanted with her options. I did love her character, though, so this is not because of a lack of character development.

Shifter Hearts is a fun shifter romance with lots of little additives that make for a decent read. It's not the most substantial romance I've read, but it's still a blast worth diving into.

Highlights:
Comedy Romance
Shifters Searching for Mates
Lots of Romantic Tropes
Miss Congeniality Vibes

E. G. Sparks has done it again, I am left with yet another major book hangover.

Shifter Hearts is a reality TV show brimming with flirtatious romance and breathtaking shifters.
Lacey Heart, PBI agent has to go on her hardest under cover mission yet.
When the waters of Shifter Island have been disturbed and events on this once peaceful island have taken a sinister turn, can Lacey solve the case and keep her composure as the show's latest bombshell?

This book had me laughing, kicking my legs, slapping my forehead and even getting a little teary eyed. I loved it so much.

Shifter hearts is a show similar to Love Island, or Singles inferno but with Shifters.
I found the concept thrilling, and the way E. G. Sparks has written the story makes it work really well.

I love the layers of Lacey's character and how as a reader we see her open up and flourish as a person. Her hate for reality TV and the idea of being pampered, really made me giggle. Throughout the book, we see her soften up to the glamour of TV whilst still keeping her cover, and her strong willed personality.

I always know when I'm reading an E. G. Sparks book when it comes to the eyes of the characters. Through all of her books, these persistent descriptions have made some of these characters visually memorable. Specifically in this book, Shifter Hearts, I thought this characteristic worked particularly well with the characters being shifters, each of their eyes matched their aura and the animal they shift into, bringing them to life on a different scale.

The ending of this book is brilliant. I did think that there was a lot going on towards the end, but as your adrenaline is still pumping, Sparks, brings the story to a close with such a heartwarming ending that all the characters deserved.

I'd say on a spice scale this book is one chilly (Extra mild).

I found Shifter Hearts; funny, heart warming, layered, flirtatious and overflowing with adrenalin.

4⭐️ | A Fun and Furry Romp Through Reality TV Drama

Shifter Hearts by E.G. Sparks is the perfect read if you’re looking for something light, fun, and full of shifter drama. It’s Miss Congeniality meets Love Island, with a dash of mystery and plenty of moments that had me laughing out loud.

Lacey Heart is such a great FMC—badass, snarky, and just awkward enough to be relatable. Thrown undercover on a reality dating show to solve a missing person case, she’s way out of her depth when it comes to bikinis, beauty routines, and fake flirting. Enter the hunky, brooding tiger shifter who’s equal parts infuriating and irresistible. The enemies-to-lovers vibe between them was chef’s kiss, with all the banter, tension, and “touch her and die” moments you could want.

The tropes in this book are everything—forced proximity, one bed, fake dating, and even a makeover sequence that gave me all the Miss Congeniality feels. The humor was spot on (Lacey’s commentary is gold), and there were plenty of moments that kept me hooked, especially as the mystery unfolded. I didn’t see the twist coming, and the ending, while a little different from what I expected, fit the book perfectly.

That said, the book does follow Miss Congeniality a bit too closely in places, which sometimes made it feel a little predictable. And while I enjoyed the romance, it felt a bit rushed given the short timeline—though that’s pretty standard in shifter romances, so I can’t complain too much. I also would’ve loved to see more of the shifters’ abilities in action, but Lacey’s “fluffbutt” wolf moments made up for it.

Overall, this is such a fun read. If you’re in the mood for a laugh-out-loud shifter romance with a sprinkle of mystery and a healthy dose of reality show chaos, this one’s for you.

Read this if you love: 🐺 Enemies-to-lovers
🦩 Forced proximity
🐺 One bed
🦩 Fake dating
🐺 Kickass women who take no crap
🦩 Snarky banter and shifter vibes

Definitely worth picking up when you’re in the mood for something silly, swoony, and just plain fun!

📺🐺✨ Shifter Hearts by E.G. Sparks ✨🐾🌴

Take one badass she-wolf 🐕‍🦺, toss her into a bikini-fied reality TV show 👙, add a tiger shifter who’s all growl and swoon 🐅🔥, and you've got a recipe for danger, laughs, and a side of romance that’ll make your heart skip a beat! 💓🕵️‍♀️

Lacey Heart is not here to mingle, okay? 😏 She’s here to crack the case of a missing contestant… except said contestant turns up dead 💀, and her undercover operation turns into a cover blown situation faster than you can say, "Here for the right reasons." 😳 Oh, and did I mention the hunky tiger shifter who barges in claiming to be the dead woman’s brother? Yeah, he’s got secrets of his own—plus muscles for days. 😍💪

This book is like The Bachelor 🌹 meets CSI 🕵️ with a paranormal twist that had me hooked from the first page! Lacey’s tough-yet-vulnerable vibes made her the perfect heroine, and the banter between her and Mr. Tall, Tiger, and Handsome was chef’s kiss 🤌. The mystery kept me guessing, the romance was clean but swoon-worthy 💞, and the humor had me legit cackling. 😂🐾

If you love shifters, suspense, and some glamor-filled fun under the sun ☀️🌊, this one’s calling your name! 🐺💕✨

A fun, light change of pace for me!!
If you loved Miss Congeniality, you'll love this. With a Shifter twist and reality show drama thrown in, it's sure to keep you guessing till the very end. It has a hint of romance and spice, but it's definitely more mystery drama based as you dive into the Love Island aspect, the Shifter Hearts TV show. A contestant has gone missing, and who better to go undercover than Lacey Heart, an agent who is a Tom boy and is all about the job. With a friend or dare, I say crush heading up the operation. As she's literally made over from top to bottom and thrown in the lions den, literally 😉, she gets to know the contestants and her pairing, Marco. As she uncovers clues, twists are thrown in the mix with temptation island, a new pairing, and a tiger who might just have his own agenda. They work together to solve the mystery and find the missing contestant, with betrayal on the rise, an unexpected connection, death, and an attention hungry agent, this wraps up to have a good ending! And yes, Ms. Freebush is even in there, but not how you'd think lol! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

... What to Expect ...
Paranormal romance, shifters, undercover agent, reality show, mystery, suspense, humor, secret identity, enemies to lovers, strong fmc, one bed, forced proximity, blackmail, betrayal, found family, touch her and die, drama, fake dating, and revenge!

Read this if you love:
🐺 Snarky, badass heroines
🐅 Enemies-to-lovers vibes
🕵️‍♀️ A mystery with a twist
🤣 Laugh-out-loud moments
💞 Romance with just enough spice

Shifter Hearts by E.G. Sparks is an absolute blast—think Miss Congeniality with claws, fangs, and a sprinkle of shifter chaos! Lacey Heart is the snarky, no-nonsense investigator I didn’t know I needed. Thrown into the absurd world of a reality dating show to solve a missing persons case, Lacey’s complete lack of patience for bikinis, beauty queens, and fake romance had me grinning from start to finish.

The story balances humor, mystery, and romance perfectly. Lacey’s banter with the brooding tiger shifter (cue the enemies-to-lovers sparks!) gave me all the feels. Their chemistry was equal parts hilarious and heart-fluttering, and I adored every moment of tension—especially when the claws came out. Oh, and let’s not forget the mystery! It kept me guessing all the way through, with just the right mix of twists and surprises.

I loved how the book didn’t take itself too seriously but still delivered those swoony, suspenseful, and emotional moments. If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted paranormal read with sharp wit, steamy tension, and a reality show gone wild, this one’s a must-pick!

Shifter Hearts by EG Sparks, Lacey is independent, rebellious, and an FBI agent who goes undercover very reluctantly when a contestant on a dating show goes missing. Lacey had no intention of playing the game, but when the missing girls brother joins the show, he black mails her into allowing him into the investigation, but unfortunately, he also is wiggling his way into Lacey‘s heart. The investigation nor the game is going the way Lacey thought it would but she is relentless and will not give up until the job is done, but will she also end up with Callum the tiger shifter? I really enjoyed this book as I loved Miss congeniality but I don’t like this new train where they have shape shifters that don’t shift. I mean, if they don’t shift into their animal form, isn’t this just a formula romance novel? Either way, I still enjoyed it and definitely recommend it and as I said if shifter books aren’t your type of hype no worries they don’t shift. just an FYI, there’s also a link so you can take the test to see what type of shifter you would attract. #BookSirens,#EGSparks, #ShifterHearts,

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of ‘Shifter Hearts’.
I loved this book!! It was my first finished book of 2025.

The female main character (Lacey) really had a whirlwind of a time throughout this book, and she dealt with it so well. From going to her every day job to being thrown into a completely different situation and she just goes about it like it’s nothing new!

We meet a variety of characters along the way, all with different personalities. I loved the Love Island inspired approach that the author used when writing this book, mix that with fantasy and shifters and it makes a cracking read!

Another thing that I loved about this book is the fantasy element to it as well as being about romance, it really added a nice touch which excited me a bit and not a lot of books can do that, truthfully. However, for being a fantasy romance there were still some very shocking moments where my jaw dropped and I LOVE when that happens despite the book being a fantasy romance. It just keeps me entertained and wanting to read on to find out what’s going to happen next.

100% recommend🩷🩷

"A Stunningly humorous ,and Exciting Shifter Romance"

This story has lots of mysteries, and spice. The characters are awesome, and the main heroin is hilarious.
Lacey is an agent for a special Shifter organization. Called the Preternatural Bureau of Investigation aka P.B.I. They investigate mysteries involving the paranormals. Every member of the organization are shifters. Lacey herself is a golden retriever wolf shifter. For a long time she had a huge crush on Keegan. A fellow agent who is also a playboy. Only no.matter what she did she cannot attract Keegan's romantic attention.
Then they received an assignment to go undercover on a Shifter dating reality show. It seems one of the contestants have gone missing! Lacey is picked to replace the missing contestant. The show turns her into a bombshell secret agent. Which Lacey hates as she has never been a girly girl. She does get Keegan's attention, but then she meets Callum the missing contestant brother! Did fate lead Callum there to meet Lacey? Will Lacey have to choose between the men? This is a five star story.

This was marketed as a Miss Congeniality meets Love Island but with shifters and it is definitely that!

I enjoyed Lacey's character and seeing her in the group settings with the other people on the Island as she tries to solve who could be behind a kidnapping. I really wish we could have seen more of the actual shifter activity instead of just being told what their shifter animals were, but I understood that Lacey was undercover and too noticeable with her "Fluffbutt".

There were quite a few moments that had me cracking up and some that I didn't expect. A certain someone shifting at the end into something that truly took me by surprise.

But as much as I enjoyed the Miss Congeniality references, I found it followed the movies a little too closely to be unique. Lacey vs Gracie. The entire intro scene of her as a kid punching a boy because he got mad that she stopped the bullies from picking on him. So many interactions and other characters names in the books.

I've never scene Love Island so I can't compare any of those scenes, but I'm sure they had some similar and unique.

I never really got too ensnared in the romance, but since the whole span of the book was maybe a week, it didn't really leave much time for a huge connection to be drawn, which I get.

Still, I was intrigued and read it all and I'm glad I did. Definitely read if you're in the mood for something light and fun with a little mystery and romance!

Read if you love:
-Take no sh*t women
-Shifters
-Humorous group settings
-One bed
-Reality show competitions
-Undercover agent

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book! My thoughts are entirely my own.

Shifter hearts is a funny, easy-read fantasy romance that combines elements of 'Miss Congeniality' with 'Love Island'
We follow the undercover mission of detective Lacey Heart, who works for the PBI (Preternatural Bureau of Investigations), a wolf-retriever shifter, who has been tasked with the job of exposing the killer of one of the dating shows contestants. A strong, slightly 'masculine' female assigned the role of a bikini-wearing bombshell...there were always going to be complications! As you'd expect with any investigation, there are twists and turns and some nail-biting moments, but the book is also filled with a wonderful blend of humour, laugh out loud snipets and heart-warming moments. The story is written extremely well and E.G.Sparks has a completely amazing way with words. In fact, the book was so good I couldn't put it down. It was the perfect distraction to immerse myself in.
Thank you so much for such a delightful read. I would fully recommend.

I absolutely loved reading Shifter Hearts because I love Miss Congeniality 1 and 2. What an amazing idea to base a shifter story on the idea of a reality tv show with Miss Congeniality ideals. I enjoyed the ride of getting to know these characters. Loved the witty humorous aspect of this story and the different shifters involved. We even get to meet shifters that are rare and exotic. So, Lacey is trying to find the missing contestant and clues. Discovering the location of said contestant is one mystery solved, but delightfully there’s other mysteries that get answered and some karma is excellently delivered. Oh, and just so you know there’s some huge surprises that I totally didn’t see coming that had me squeeing and just loving how this sweet humorous story ended. Well done E. G. Sparks! Loved it!

Just finished Shifter Hearts by E.G. Sparks, and it’s an absolute thrill! Lacey Heart, a dedicated agent at the Preternatural Bureau of Investigations, is forced into a desk job after disobeying orders. Her shot at redemption? Going undercover on a bikini-clad dating show. 🕵️‍♀️💃

Maintaining her cover, Lacey uncovers a dead contestant and meets the rugged tiger shifter, the victim's brother, who insists on helping her. With her pulse racing and a killer on the loose, Lacey faces the ultimate challenge.

This standalone paranormal suspense novel blends a swoon-worthy romance, humor, and a gripping mystery. Imagine Miss Congeniality meets Love Island with shifters—so cute and fun! I’m obsessed and can't wait for more! 🐺🐯❤️

Shifter Hearts by E.G. Sparks is paranormal crime drama packed with humor, action, and good storytelling. Lacey finds herself in the most unfitting undercover role as it clashes with her fierce, no-nonsense attitude as a detective. I found myself enthralled and entertained by the dating TV show itself, even though it served as a backdrop for Lacey’s secret role as she dove into the persona of a contestant. The writing is humorous, the dialogue solid, and the narrative well done. The explosive tension between alphas is palpable, and the array of shifters had unique personalities that balanced the scenes and characters. The crime mystery remains a good one throughout the story as its anyone’s guess who the culprit may be. Overall, an enjoyable read with multidimensional elements for a good read. This was a very fun read. Lately I have been enjoying E.G Sparks books so I was so excited to be asked to review her latest, Shifter Hearts. This did not disappointment. It has been dubbed Miss Congeniality meets Love Island and it certainly fits that profile but with a twist. Not gonna lie, at first I thought is was just that, with nothing extra however this book delivered and more. It was fast and funny and I loved the different relationships in the book. One of the things I love about EG Sparks' writing is it is simple and easy, perfect for a good time. However, this one I wanted more about the characters. I would love to see more in this series, maybe more about the different contestants, I kinda feel in love with all of them. I give this one 4 stars.

This was a cute story that's about Agent Lacey Heart a tough as nails tomboy wolf shifter investigator for the Preternatural Bureau of Investigations who got desked for disobeying an order and then assigned a job to be a contestant on a bikini-clad dating show the Shifter Hearts. What happens when Lacey arrives looking for a contestant who disappeared and then is found murdered is an engaging who done it story. This was an entertaining story with likable characters. Loved, Lacey and the agents she's friends with that bet on her. The action and twists and turns were engaging in this copy I'd received a copy via Hidden Gems and volunteer to read and review.

When i first started reading it definitely gave me Ms Congeniality vibes with the same humor and jokes. Made me up my eyebrow a sec, how similar some scenes were, but decided to continue reading.

The storyline was nice, not too deep, airy at times. Didn't delve much in the back history of Lacey, which I would have liked to see more.

Were a few surprising twists and turns which made me go ahhhh told u so!

All in all a nice easy book, with some funny moments.

If ur looking for smut, it has has no smut, just some enuendos and thrill moments.

Nice job 😄😄

I enjoyed thus story and it had me laughing and trying to guess who the real bad guy could be. While it definitely took inspiration from the Miss Congeniality movie, it ran with that films fun parts and mixed in great characters and a side helping of shifter trouble to give a fun story. I read it in one sitting and had to stop at times to finish laughing before continuing the story. I enjoyed the characters and thought Lacey was a riot. Loved the mix of shifter, murder mystery, undercover agent and reality TV.

Shifter Hearts was fast read with lots of chuckles, a few twists, and some spice thrown in. The MFC Lacey is a little broken with a bad attitude and even worse people skills. Anything but a girly girl. All get in get it done and get out no holds barred when it comes to her job as and investigator. Throw in a variety of hot shifters and shake it up with an abduction add in an investigator who would rather be anywhere but in a bikini and you haves this fast funny and sometimes touching read. I received an ARC of this and I'm giving my honest review voluntarily.

She has been put on a desk job when she disobeys a direct order and she is not happy when given a chance to redeem herself. She is not happy with what she is expected to do and so she goes undercover in a dating show. Even worse she finds a dead body and their brother wants to help. Life is going to become increasingly complicated so see how they will get on
I received an advance copy from hidden gems and I was quickly caught up in this great tale

It wasn’t bad, but I felt like there was too much going on. The investigation was all over the place, the love interest wasn’t introduced until 60% through, and neither the reality show nor the stepfamily subplot felt fully fleshed out. I did really like Lacey, though, and the tongue-in-cheek handling of shifter lore and reality tv tropes was entertaining. The author’s style was breezy and accessible.
