The elders tell of a forgotten age, when heroes built towers that breached the ceiling of the sea. No one suspects that their architects were an entirely different species. Not even Kurita, and she isn’t your average octopus.
While out salvaging for treasure, Kurita finds an ancient shield, heavier than stone and sturdier than shell. Kurita’s always dreamt of adventure, but this discovery will bring more than she’s ever fished for. Will this lost technology help Kurita protect her family, or doom them to repeat the mistakes of the past?
It is popular among the scientific community to speculate that a post-human Earth might be taken over by the octopus. As Professor Tim Coulson of Oxford University puts it, their “dexterity, curiosity, ability to communicate with each other, and supreme intelligence” make them good candidates to form the next civilization following our possible (probable?) demise.
S.S. Julian's Octopolis explores this hypothesis through its main character Kurita. Although the world of Octopolis already seems to exist in the cephalopod equivalent of the Bronze Age, Kurita is shown as being destined to push that even further with her inventiveness, engineering new ways to accomplish everything from completing her chores to saving the Holdfast from raiders.
I'm really enamored of the world imagined and illustrated by S.S. Julian. The mechanics and visuals of the octopus are refreshingly different from what you might have come to expect from a human or humanoid subject, as is octopus society; Kurita has one Ma, but she has three Pas!
I wrote this book, so I am biased. But I also am genuinely proud of it. And I published it myself! Please pick up a copy here and decide for yourself: www.octopoliscomic.com
This was an interesting read with a well crafted and researched world. It was fun to consider how our current octopus friends could evolve into this this future society. I couldn't help myself searching anatomy and ocean life as I went along. After my octopus education distractions, I focused on the story which is hard not to like. I'm looking forward to seeing Kurita's character growth tackling future struggles that are sure to arise!
