A nice ending for a overall good series. The final book in the series has a lot of the flaws that, to me, are spread through the whole thing. The most damning, for me, is the way that sometimes the author let the characters speak as if they are preaching to a crowd. I understand that the author wants to make it clear that the prejudice that the society makes people who are different is something awful and we should all condemn. However, sometimes it sounded like the characters were making a speech. Its something that made me get kind of annoyed sometimes, but I'm very glad that most of the times it was not Ushio who was talking like that, it was other characters. To make the trans character constantly have to defend itself against society in the text would be very tiresome and I'm glad that didn't happen. However, because of these long, sometimes preachy, speechs, it was very funny the way that some characters, especially considering how many of them are 16-19, sounded like try hard teenagers lmao. This is a thing that bothered me through the whole series tbh, but I don't think that this per se makes it awful. Or else I wouldn't have read until the end. Okay, regarding the last book per se. I was very afraid when Sakuma and Ushio got into a relationship because of a lot of things that, through the last 4 books, made me go "Wait, are they ready to get into a romantic relationship?" And god, I'm so glad that the author dealt with these issues. Not only Ushio is a girl who recently came out as a girl and has to deal with this newfound life of hers (as the last volume has shown to us), but Sakuma is a teenager with some hardships himself. When we got to the scene of them trying to kiss and Sakuma kind of rejects her, I saw the problems coming out [lol] and I was like "oh boy oh boy". And then, there's the whole scene with Sera in Hokkaido. To me thats like. One of the best scenes in the whole series. We are confronted with the way that Sakuma himself is afraid and has a kind of skewed view regarding relationships and how he is afraid of changing their relationship. When he admitted that he couldn't feel attraction to her because of issues my heart sank and I swear, I almost wanted to get together with Sera to punch Sakuma too lol. But damn, I gotta say, when Sera took Sakuma to that place in the car and the way that the talk went I got "oh god, does he have a crush on Sakuma?" AND WHEN THAT WAS CONFIRMED I GIGGLED SO MUCH, HOLY SHIT HAHAHAHA. Tbh, one thing I felt that was missing from this series was other people from the LGBT+ acronym. Being a part of this group myself, I know that we tend to band together lol so I was like "the author is going to ignore the LGB?" and then we got a good discussion regarding polyamorous relationships and the confirmation that two of Sera's girlfriends are dating and that Sera is bi??pan?? idk?? God, I wasn't expecting that, but I'm not complaining. I think some people can get defensive since Sera is shown to be kind of a little shit, but the author has shown to us that is something of his character, not like. Because he's poly bi pan whatever lol since his girlfriends sounds like normal people. But then we got Sakuma, and I swear I was really expecting the author to confirm him as aroace or something. I'm not too keen on having things said like "yes it is like this it's canon" but the way that he talked I swear it was going to be like that. I personally dont think that he has to be. The way that he talked he could be ace/demi or he could be someone that has some complicated feelings regarding sex (as he made explicit in the way that he saw Sera and his relationships) and that has to have a good romantic relationship to have sex or something. That's something that I felt like it could have been more....told more directly? Idk. Regarding his and Ushio's relationship. I swear to god I thought they wouldn't end up together, like. I was really glad when Sakuma asked her out, but as I dug through v.5 I was so afraid that they would get separated or something. I'm a big fan of messy conversations in relationships in which the people involved like each other but there's some issues. This volume is full of that. Not only the issue of Ushio being trans, but their old relationship as friends when Ushio still hadn't come out as a child, Sakuma's own self esteem issues. This all bundled together and exploded in this volume. I loved their trip together all the way to the northmost of Japan since their insecurities were so exposed and they bare themselves and decided to be together. I really loved this volume since, even before the Hokkaido's trip started, we could see Ushio acting like a "normal" girl together with Sakuma. It makes clear that it's where she feel the safest to act like herself and that she wouldn't feel less like a girl or less loved. I really enjoyed this volume. Like I said, it's not a perfect series, it has flaws, but I felt a lot of sincerity from the author to make these characters try their best to become better people for themselves and to be happier.
