In this world of ever-changing algorithms, does this book hold any relevance?

In this world of constantly changing algorithms and content trends, I picked up this book wondering if it still holds any relevance. As someone who has been creating content for over ten years, five years growing a fashion page to 20k followers, and another five running a Bookstagram account (side note: my bookstaversary is just around the corner!)—I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t in the online world.

At first glance, I questioned what more this book could teach me. But because it was published by Penguin, I gave it a shot, hoping to learn something new from the author’s experience. And to my surprise, I did.

The first half of the book is very beginner-friendly. It covers the basics of content creation—things like equipment, lighting, and audio—and explains it in a way that anyone new to the space can easily understand. While this section didn’t offer anything new to me personally, it would be incredibly helpful for someone just starting out.

The second half of the book, however, dives deeper into more advanced concepts like understanding algorithms, CPR (click-through, playback, retention), the importance of thumbnails, and why you should spend a good amount of time crafting the perfect introduction. The author uses well-known examples like MrBeast to explain these ideas, which makes the book engaging and informative.

What I liked most was the simple language. It’s easy to follow, fun to read, and feels genuine. For anyone who is even slightly interested in content creation, especially on YouTube, this book offers solid advice.

But there were a few things I didn’t like. For example, when the book tried to explain visual concepts like color grading, the images used were all black and white, which made the examples pretty ineffective. If the book had included colored visuals, it would have been much more helpful and interactive.

Another issue was the platform focus. Although the book is titled Content Creator’s Handbook, it’s mostly about YouTube. There’s hardly any mention of other platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Pinterest, or Threads. Considering how many creators build their careers on these platforms, this felt like a huge gap.

There are also a few topics I wish had been included. For instance, how to approach brands and convert barter deals into paid collaborations—something many creators struggle with. A section on how to set commercial rates, especially since there’s a big pay gap in the industry, would have been useful too. Many creators with 2k followers are getting the same rate as those with 50k, and a guide to setting fair prices would really help.

Lastly, I wish the book talked more about editing and how to make your content stand out in a crowded space. With everyone trying to be seen, tips on creativity and storytelling would’ve added a lot of value.

Overall, this was a fun and informative read, especially if your main focus is YouTube. While it doesn't cover everything a modern content creator needs to know, it’s a helpful starting point for beginners and has a few useful reminders for seasoned creators, too.

Make content that you truly care about. You can't say i want to pursue Youtube, but i really dislike the process of creating videos. Then Dont Do It!.

Book: The Content Creator Handbook

When i picked up this book, i thought it would be about overall content creation. But then as i read, i realised it was more about Youtube and creating video content. Because no doubt Video is the future. If you will notice, Reels are doing better than Static posts on instagram.

In the starting the authors talk about the creative mindset you need to get into content creation. They share some Do's and Don't's from their own experience of content creating. The intial chapters give a good understanding of the platform dynamics. It then focuses on technical information like video editing, camera, audio & lightning, video production. It also focuses on strategic information like Quality vs Quantity, Consistency, Increasing the surface area of luck and acces etc. Besides this, it also addresses topics like Dealing with haters and influencers, Dopamine Trap, Living the content creator life.

Keeping up with the current trends, another good point to be noted in the book is the topic of 'Content in the world of AI' where the author talks about how future of video editing will look like using a tool based approach.

The book is lengthy so reading in parts will do good. Taking one chapter at a time. Language is easy to understand. It was good learning about the strategies for making video content. But since i am not into Youtube or video content creation i found only parts of the book helpful. The title is misleading, because i picked it up because of the word 'Handbook' which i thought might be about overall content creation including other social media platforms.

But nonetheless the book is good for those who wanting to get into Video creation on Youtube.

This book talks a lot about the challenges and opportunities faced by creators. The writing is engaging and direct, with a “no-BS” tone that emphasizes practicality over fluff. Thinking of starting a Youtube channel in 2025? Read this book.

Impressive breakdown of how to approach content creation, written by folks doing it.

The book is broken into sections on how to approach content creation, discovering your audience, basics of editing, packaging a video and production infra. All sections hit home, especially the one about how creators need to be aware of their shelf lives and need to build something out of the momentary fame and/or virality.

Note: while some revenue estimates can be a bit off, they are generally in the right range.
