Another excellent collection of dark and creepy tales from the Scare Street team. You really can't go wrong with anything written by this team of talented horror scribes. My favourite short stories listed below.
Music Box by A. I. Nasser Trick or Treat by Sarah Clancy The Sins We Hide by A. I. Nasser (Best of the best)
I feel I ought to spell out, to avoid any possible misunderstanding, that the above story is an elaborate joke, an exercise in black humor. It is written in the form of an acrostic, whereby the first letter of each paragraph spells out the supposed invocation Grimwade mentions. To save the reader further trouble the result is:
VENIT SATANAS PESTIFER MUNDI
It is of course absurd to suggest that such a clichéd and somewhat silly display of diabolism could have any effect, even if it had somehow burrowed into millions of readers’ minds without their knowing on Halloween. But I must admit that it is a rather clever idea; that publishing such a story on the internet could bring about the end of the world. But please, do not judge my poor friend too harshly, you who are reading this story days, weeks, or even years after its appearance.
Your world is still perfectly intact, is it not?

A terrific anthology of scary short stories by A.I. Nasser, David Longhorn, Sara Clancy and Ron Ripley. The stories are scary, but they are not horror scary. They are a nice kind of scary. So if you like a book that’s a little scary and suspenseful, then you’ll love this book. I’m a horror fan. Not a scary fan.
The only reason I picked up this book was because of AI Nasser's story's. I know others r good but they are not much appealing for me. However AI Nasser books are always good.
Scare Street authors know how to write a short horror story. This compilation is a nice variety of the work on offer, but in a quick fix format.
The work on offer varies from author to author, but they all offer good quality stories that you will enjoy and remember, varying from haunted places and vengeful spirits to curses and supernatural creatures. There are a couple of stories that you may feel are similar to other authors works, but they are done in a new take on that theme, so as not to come across as too familiar. (One of my favourites in this whole collection had a strong element of M R James about it).
There will be the odd one or two that you will read and say 'called it', but this is still usually with an unusual ending thrown in.
A good selection of stories for fans of horror to delve into, and a great way to sample the Scare Street style.
It's a good collection of horror stories to read on a chilled out night. I gave the book a three star rating because the stories ranged from mildly scary to not scary. This is based on the opinion of someone who reads and listens to too much true crime. The stories that did peak my interest were Music box, Trick or treat and Faces. They put me back in a scene where I'd sit at night and watch Outer Limits. It was a fun read and would recommend it to first time horror reader.
This book of short stories was absolutely awesome. It was one of those books that you just can’t put down. I was drawn into each story as if I was there. Spine tingling terror that is so hard to find. Each had a slightly different twist at the end that kept you captivated until the last sentence. Give me more, give me more. A huge recommendation for the thrill seekers out there.
This horror anthology held so much potential. I started reading it last night and had to stop after three stories because they were legitimately scaring me. Then, this morning, the continued stories were all cliché. We had the typical 'Trick or Treat' and a ghost looking for revenge. There was someone coming back from the dead... all of it the things that are put in every basic horror collection. I was disappointed but I did really enjoy several of the stories.
Really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it to everyone who loves a great scare. I definitely will be checking out more from this collection and the authors who contributed to it. Well worth the money.
A good collection of short stories. My favourite was "The Sins We Hide" by A.I. Nasser. Some have a Lovecraft vibe but each has its unique interpretation.
An artfully crafted collection of short stories by a group of talented authors. A must-read for all horror enthusiasts. Be prepared to sleep with the lights on!
I am such a sucker for a horror anthology so I was so excited to start this series. Some of the stories were a bit of a let down, but overall I really enjoyed all of them. The last story, The Sins We Hide, was my favorite story.
For critiques, there were 3 stories in the middle that I didn’t even want to finish, I found them very boring and ended up just skimming them to get the picture. I was very disappointed in them. All, but maybe 2 of the stories, I could predict what was gonna happen and it just became very repetitive as if there was no originality.
The first story, Jackson Stables, even though that was predictable, it was predictable in still a good way. I was still very excited, guessing what was coming made me that much more excited to get to that part. And even though they were all very predictable, it made them not scary, but they were still very enjoyable. I appreciate that, even if I can’t be scared or thrown off guard, I still love a good story.
There were 2 stories that were extremely similar which ruined both stories for me. They were both great on their own, but because they were almost identical minus location, it hurt the story-telling of both. They had almost identical monsters and identical descriptors. Those in separate volumes would’ve made a much bigger impact in my opinion.
Well edited. I read horror shorts to get to sleep. Suffering chronic pain and insomnia for years with no end in sight, reading is a balm. Horror and scifi, paranormal, fantasy, any combination of these drizzled with some historical facts is really important to keep interest. This book overall was a weak read. I gave 4 because I didn't notice any grammatical or spelling errors, that always makes me regret putting money on. I understand it's hard to make up new stories and exceptionally hard to make a truly unique story interesting enough to remember by the end of the book so I give stars for effort. I'm not sure there was very much put into this one. Sorry, no scares here.
Not really sure what to think. Most really good books that have awesome stories will stick out in my mind for a while after reading it. To be quite honest, it took me forever to read this book, because one, I lost interest fairly quickly, and two, I lost interest fairly quickly. I am a little upset about that. From most of my previous reviews, I mention my vivid imagination. Readers like me have to be captivated. This book just didn't do it for me. Three stars is for the last story that did stick out in my mind and I will remember for a while. I will try the second book in this series but if that one is dry too, I won't be reading any more of these titles. Here we go!!
I have began rereading this series. I recently found this group on Facebook and it renewed my desire to begin reading the series again. I instantly from reading this first book I was a goner. I have a very short attention span and very little free time. These books are perfect! The stories start quickly without a lot of fluff and drag you right in. I find myself reading them on my kindle whenever I can, I've even been sneaking breaks at work to catch some reading time. I'm hooked. The stories are quick to grab you, keep your attention and have you set and ready for the next one. I am already on the next one while posting this review. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
This book has a couple more stories than the ones indicated in the blurb. I liked a lot one were the victim/"bad" guy is so arrogant as to try to fight the paranormal phenomenon with just his will. Pretty cool. The stories are long enough shorts, but I kind of fell like the ending is never enough. All the writers and narrator were very good, so I wanted them to be longer and have more juice (as in background story) in a general way. Even so, I loved when the stories ended with something like news clippings with the aftermath of the story - because no one is alive to tell the tale, right... (I'm kidding! That's not the case... all the time.)
Cursed travelers, hungry monsters, psycho killers, hands of evil intent reach out for us from the shadows. This book of horror short stories is not overly gory, but still horrible enough for us to keep reading.
None of the tales is overly long, so this book is great if you don't have a lot of time for reading. Also, for the same reason, none of the tales are boring.
This is simple horror, so don't come looking for character development, or deeply meaningful human relationships. You can certainly expect adventure.
This book was great to dip into, now and then, and I am happy to rate it as 4 stars.
I absolutely loved this book! I am a very big fan of short stories especially those that are horror related. This book does a very good job at bringing you enjoyable stories to read. I like how the author has a variety of stories by different authors so that you get a variety of different reads. If you are someone who likes reading horror stories that will give you a good fright I suggest that you get a copy of this book. After reading the first couple of stories I just couldn't put the book down. Once again if you enjoy a good thrill certainly get yourself a copy of this.
I like using horror story collections as a bit of a palate cleanser between bigger reading projects (especially in the fall); this one was a perfect blend of atmospheric tension, great imagery, and a whole lot of bleak-as-hell endings (save for one or two) that felt very well-developed.
Some of these are going to haunt me for a very long time (pun intended); standouts include the final story (an epic bordering on novella length but well worth the time investment), Music Box, and Trick or Treat.
I only pick four star because the stories weren't quite as scary as I thought they would be. Don't get me wrong some of them definitely sent chills down my spine but there weren't quite enough spine chiller story's for me to date a five star. Will I read it again? Most definitely! I feel though as if teens would find this scarier though. I'm still pretty excited to read the next book!
This was a free Book Bub book, and I figured I'd give it a chance. I am not easily scared, and this book did not change that. The stories were okay, but mostly predictable. I call them Goosebumps with a little edge. Some other reviewers said they were genuinely scared, and I can understand the faint hearted may shudder, but I have read scarier. One story did stand out for me. Initial Impression by David Longhorn was relevant because of the world's current situation.
I came across this collection of short stories on Bookbub. Reading the reviews both here and on Amazon, I thought it would be much scarier than it turned out to be. Don't get me wrong. Most of the stories were okay, but I didn't find them scary. There were some interesting concepts throughout the stories, and I enjoyed the last story in the book a lot. The team of writers were uniformly good, and if I run out of reading material, I'd consider reading the next volume.
When I first started reading the first story I thought if all the stories of this good then OMG this is going to be a good book. Then I started the second story and then the third one it is if they just keep getting better there was one story however I couldn’t finish I won’t say which one but I don’t want to influence anyone but OMG you should know it when you read it. Other than that this book was awesome!
Jackson Stables 4 Stars; Music Box 3.5 Stars; Lost Dog 3 Stars; Trick or Treat 3.5 Stars - I was bored for the first bit, but the ending had my heart pounding; The Steak House 2.5 Stars; Thunder Run 4 Stars; Faces 3.5 Stars; Initial Impression 3.5 Stars; Closer 4 Stars; The Sins We Hide 3.5 Stars Overall Book 3.5 Stars ~ good for quick, creepy reading; there are some triggers in some of the stories, so check those out if needed
It's official. Nobody does scary as good as Scare Street. This group of authors is second to none when it comes to hair-raising frights and just plain creepiness. Each of the stories in this collection could serve as the basis for a Damn good movie. I have had the pleasure of listening to many audible books from this fine publisher and can't wait for more.
There were a couple of stories that I did not care for, but as a whole I still really liked this anthology of horror stories. It was mostly well written, with characters that were fleshed out (in the longer stories). Not too long and not too shirt, none of the stories bored me. All in all would have given it a 5,if I liked all the stories, but a couple just did not do it for me.
An ok book of short stories. Like most compilations, some good, some not so good. None of them were really memorable. I do like short story compilations to see if I can find a new author to read that I was unfamiliar with. I did like the A.I. Nassar story and will probably search out more of theirs to read
