If you make something, and then that something accidentally comes alive and destroys your entire town…would it be fair to say that you destroyed the town, or can we just blame it on the thing?

Lillian Booker is dying to experiment on the strange glowing rocks hidden inside her adoptive father’s workshop—but the professor forbid it before he left on his journey. As Lillian learns all she can about the stones without breaking the professor’s rule, she finds herself stuck between two worlds.

Will she live the life of a brilliant inventor or give up on her dreams and become a respectable lady instead? What will make her happy? Most importantly, which will prove to the professor that he didn’t make a mistake when he chose her?

When Lillian secretly builds a mechanical dragon, one mistake leads to another—the strange glowing stones collide with her creation and the dragon roars to life. Lillian must make a choice…lie and keep her dragon a secret or finally face the truth?

Will any of it matter anyway if the town’s already been destroyed?

It's a fun short story and I liked the way the theme developed. I would have done four stars but I'm trying to be more strict with my ratings. The main character felt almost too extreme, but it was to make a point that unrestrained self-criticism can lead to extreme and irrational thoughts and behaviour. The lesson hits closer to home than I would like to admit. I also liked that a character who might have the stereotypical snobby rich girl actually turned out to be a sympathetic character who drops a couple truth bombs on the main character.

5 stars. A lovely little story with immense emotional depth and a bit of religious trauma thrown in for spice. The characters feel real and dynamic. Lillian is a brilliant and funny protagonist whose struggles are scarily relatable, and James is honestly such a sweetheart. I couldn’t help grinning every time he appeared in a scene. The references to real-life religion felt a little odd for a steampunk story, but they weren’t intrusive enough to impact my rating. In fact, they went nicely with the little hint of anti-misogyny I caught in the narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you’re looking for a quick read on a winter day, curl up by the fire with Copper Lies.

Okay… Copper Lies was one wild, glowing-rock, mechanical-dragon kind of ride.

The concept? So cool. I was immediately hooked by the idea of a chaotic inventor girl accidentally bringing a dragon to life and potentially leveling a town in the process. It had that whimsical, steampunk-fantasy energy I love in theory—plus the moral gray area of “did I destroy the town, or did the dragon?”

Lillian Booker is a unique main character—smart, bold, a little too curious for her own good. I really liked the ambition and the “I just want to prove I’m worth something” vibe she carried. That felt real and relatable. I liked her character 😆

But… while I loved the idea of the story, the pacing didn’t always hit for me. Some parts felt a little too fast, but it was a lovely short story, I found myself wishing for more depth in the worldbuilding and a bit more emotional payoff in certain scenes.

That being said—the vibes were there. The mechanical dragon moments were awesome, the glowing stone mystery kept me curious, and the themes of belonging, identity, and self-worth were meaningful.

So overall:
3 stars from me. Not a favorite, but a fun, imaginative ride with a unique premise.

I just finished this novel by Alli Prince and it was really good.
This book is a stunning blend of (science) fiction, a touch of magic and a protagonist who has to fight her way through societal expectations and self doubt.

Lillian is such a relatable main character – bold but uncertain, brilliant but underestimated. Her journey as a young inventor and women navigating through a world filled with beasts, magic and high-society drama let me really enjoy this story.

I liked the world building and her growing self confidence.
This book is perfect for everyone who likes fantasy, self-discovery and YA stories.

Super great book! I would have loved it even more as a young teen than I do now.
Can tell it's a good book when you're "awww"ing at the sidekick for being a sidekick and slapping your forhead because the main character is doing very dumb main character things.
Great character arc, sweet romance (by that I mean the FMC has a crush 😉), and hateable villain.
Oh, and did I mention it has a dragon?

The characters are memorable, the descriptions are vivid, and the themes are deep and meaningful.

Copper Lies does a really great job showcasing what happens when we give into our insecurities and rely on them to help protect us from our fears of rejection.

This is a great story that will encourage teen girls who are struggling with anxiety, fear of rejection, and other insecurities.

This is a really cool book. I’ve never gotten into steampunk before, but this got me hooked from the start. I absolutely love the characters (the Professor is my favorite) and Lillian is a strong main character that kept me reading. It honestly reminded me a little of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, but it has a flair entirely it’s own. One thing that stuck out to me was how the sermon from the very beginning of the book tied into the final reveal, and how the dragon was stopped (I won’t spoil it, I promise!). This is a great pick for girls who like fantasy YA. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I postponed reading this story for way too long, but I'm so glad I read it! It's not often that I come across stories which I know will stay in my heart and mind for a very long time, and I think this story might be able to accomplish that! This is not a story just based on some tropes mixed together, or something that you can fit into one single category. It's science fiction, but also fantasy. It's a story that feels like one, something from the creative mind of a writer who has a lovely imagination, in my opinion!

Now that I've expressed how much I loved the story, I'm gonna list some things that might entice you to give it a try and love it too!
🔭Sci-fi, but can also be considered fantasy
🔭Dragon.
🔭Clean, does have romance, but nothing more than handholding and brushing hair away from face *swoons*
🔭Romance is a sub-plot. The main character and her journey are the main focus in the book
🔭Emotional turmoil. In the words of AO3 tags: 'Angst with a happy ending'
🔭Feel-good vibes. Can't explain it in words, but it'll make your heart a bit happier, I promise!

I really hope everyone gives this book a try, it's really not even 150 pages long, and it's really one of my favourites this year!

Thanks a lot to the author, Allison Prince for sending me the ARC of this book!

P.S.: I later learned that the fantasy/sci-fi genre is apparently called steampunk? So ig that's what this one is?

"Copper Lies" by Alli Prince is a amazing fantasy novel with a captivating story that have a dragon and inventions.

The book follows Lillian Booker's journey, as a young inventor that is grappling with issues of intrusive thoughts, weight of societal expectations and self-doubt while facing off against a mechanical dragon that she accidentally brings to life.

This book had impactful and strong themes explored throughout like: self-discovery and the importance of overcoming self-limiting beliefs.

It explores the lies we tell ourselves and how they can shape our reality in sometimes destructive ways. It also delves into the impact of unrestrained self-criticism showing how it can spiral into cycle of irrational thoughts/behaviour, impacting every aspect of our lives.

The novel starts slow but then the plot accelerates and i was wondering what would happen next. I enjoyed how the central theme was developed throughout the story.

The main character struggles with insecurities that I believe many readers will find relatable and the clean romance is a lovely touch, so sweet.
Anyone who knows me knows that I love dragons, so I want to emphasise that there is one!

I recommend it to anyone who loves an easy YA fantasy read.

𝑪𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒊𝒆𝒔 is a must-read for anyone who loves:

✨Coming of age

I’m sad this was a shorter story. I want more of the characters and world. I finished this book in a night. It was a fun escape into a steampunk-esque world.
Lillian is a chaotic inventor who accidentally brings an invention to life in her desperation to prove that she is worth something. She was curious, bold, and interesting. Her internal struggles were relatable. The author did a good job of showing depth to the characters in a short amount of time.
Lillian wrestles with the lies she believes about herself throughout the story and we see how those lies can fuel our decisions. We also see what happens when we use our insecurities as “protection” from fears.
Copper Lies has an immersive setting. Interesting characters. A fun sidekick. Themes about the choices we make have consequences and about the importance of telling the truth.
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and want to read more by her.
I would recommend this book for early teens.

Great Teen Steampunk Novella!

I was fortunate to be selected as an ARC reader for Copper Lies, and after diving into this adventurous tale of invention and consequence, I’m excited to share my thoughts. This debut novella from Alli Prince plunges readers into the heart of the steampunk genre, blending retro-futuristic technology with a 19th-century industrial aesthetic. Prince offers all the hallmark elements of steampunk—steam-powered machines and inventive designs—but also infuses the story with unique character-driven dilemmas and moral questions that elevate it beyond the genre’s typical bounds.

The story’s pace starts off a bit slower than I expected, but as Lillian’s journey unfolds, the tension builds and the stakes grow. The slow start serves as a necessary buildup, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the world Prince has crafted. By the time the plot accelerates, it’s hard to put the novella down, as Lillian’s challenges become increasingly dire and thrilling.

Copper Lies is a solid debut novella from Alli Prince. It may start a little slow, but once it hits its stride, the engaging characters, thrilling plot, and rich steampunk setting carry the story to an exciting conclusion. A full review is posted on my blog under book reviews!

5 stars!! This is a steampunk fantasy with a main character who struggles with insecurities that I believe every single person of any age could relate to. I would recommend for any age, however, the parents of young adults can be rest assured that their teen or tween is reading a wonderful clean story that even has some romance! It also speaks to the hidden thoughts all of us can have on a day to day basis about how we feel about ourselves. -PLUS there is a dragon! The worldbuilding and fantasy is well written along with the deep struggles of life. This would have been hard to do in a novella, yet Alli was able to do this well! This is a strong debut book for this author and I cannot wait to read what she releases next!

Copper lies is the debut novel of Alli Prince.

I was told this was a steampunk fantasy story other than that I went into this book knowing nothing about the story or the author.

That being said, I found very early in the book that this story was not for me. I struggled getting into this story, found it was very slow and often the sentences made very little sense to me. I had to really force myself to read this to the end and normally I would DNF a book at this point but I received this as an ARC and wanted to at least show gratitude to the author for gifting me her book. I'm also not a fan of adding religion into fantasy books which was the case with this book.

I personally read fantasy to escape the world not to read about God, but that is my personal preference as an atheist. I have no interest in learning anything about Christianity, again that is my preference nothing against the people who do have an interest in this of course so don't come at me with pitchforks.

It takes a lot of strength and courage to write a book, this book has so much potential but in my personal opinion I feel the chapters need to be divided better, more editing on the sentences and typo's is needed and maybe make the main character more likeable.

All in all this was an interesting read.

Thank you to Alli Prince for providing this ARC to me in return for an honest review. All opinions here are my own.

📖 Book Review! 📖

🍂🐉 Copper Lies by @alliprinceauthor 🐉🍂

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This book was a fantastically fun read with an amazing concept and an intriguing story! I loved the world, the characters, and the dragon! 🐉

The story follows Lillian as she works in the shop while her Uncle is out of town and in an attempt to surprise him, she accidentally brings the metal dragon to life!

If you are a fan of steampunk, dragons, and a story with a good morally correct takeaway, read this book!

⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD! ⚠️

Pros:
- The story was very unique, and had me intrigued from the start.
- The banter between Lillian and James was witty and fun.
- The relationships between certain characters were fleshed out really well, leading for deep development between them.
- The world was big enough to explore, yet not too big to get lost in.
- The message of the book is the best part, and that was the cherry on top.

Cons:
- I wish more of the world was explored, especially with the mines and the monsters.
- I think Lillian’s backstory could have came earlier and would’ve made me feel more connected to her by the end.
- A wider range of banter between Lillian and James could’ve made their relationship more dynamic.
- More of Professor Booker! He seems so interesting but we got so little of him by the end.
- I think the internal thoughts were occasionally a bit repetitive.

Thank you for reading this review, if this book sounds interesting to you, please go and check it out for yourself!

Alli Prince's COPPER LIES was a fast but cozy read!

It features a wholesome adventure centered on a spunky heroine who learns the value of telling the truth--and embracing the truth about herself through the lens of grace. There's cute romance, a scary metal dragon, and found family. My favorite thing about this book is the touching ending. I have a soft spot for broken characters who find a semblance of wholeness and hope in the end. If you love steampunk and stories about family and healing, then this book might be perfect for you.

If you’re looking for a teen steampunk novel under 150 pages this is definitely the book for you!! The main character, Lillian, is someone who I believe a lot of teenagers can relate to. She struggles with insecurities and accepting herself, but as the readers we fall in love with her. Her ambition for her craft and creating things is truly inspiring, she doesn’t let others tell her she can’t do what she loves. Overall I think this is a brilliant story and I love the characters, steampunk aspect, and the dragon, and would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages!

A riveting steampunk fantasy short story with light faith themes. Excellent world building and character development. On the surface the story seems to be like any other fantasy, but as the story progresses deep themes emerge such as acceptance, family, isolation, and the power of love and forgiveness.

This was such a good read. I really hope that Alli Prince will write more in this world!

This story kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next and what had happened before to get Lillian in the pickle she found herself in. The story will draw you in and keep you reading but don't miss out on the bigger questions to ponder. Our choices lead to consequences, do they not? But what about our interpretation of what happens to us? How does that impact the choices WE make? What happens when we believe lies instead of truth?

This was a great read! I really liked the concept of a mechanical dragon. The professor is only on the page in a couple chapters and yet I found myself fond of him. I won’t give away the plot twist but I really enjoyed and didn’t see that exact twist coming. The way they defeated the dragon was pretty fantastic. I loved the steampunk vibes and all of the crazy inventions involved in this book.

A easy, short read with steampunk, fantasy, and allegorical elements. It’s a deput novel and needs some writing tightening and polishing, but the premise drew me in and the characters engaged my interest. Chaotic? Maybe—but there’s an energy here I enjoyed. I hope the author keeps writing!

Content consideration: I think this would land especially well for young teens; however, some families may appreciate a heads-up that the topic of prostitution is a key part to the backstory.

It’s all in the title

A steampunk world, a copper dragon, little voices in the head with their insidious lies, lies and rumour and truth - and four magical stones that bring it all to life.

A solid story with some underlying morals about truth and lies, hypocrisy and self-righteousness, love and acceptance.

Energy

The story kept my interest and so I wanted to keep reading it but had some other things to do. There was a lot of energy in the characters that reminded me of how we sometimes direct that in the wrong way. Was also encouraging to know that we are loved.
