I wasn’t known for overthinking problems. I was an “ask for forgiveness and not permission” kind of person.
So when I got caught with a cock in my sweatshirt after a police raid on a cockfighting ring, it looked bad. Surely they’d know I was trying to rescue the half-dead rooster, right?
Unfortunately, there was only one person who could bail me out of this situation and it was my stepbrother’s best friend, Truett Heathstone. Which meant he’d tell my stepbrother–who I had a wildly inappropriate crush on– who’d then be obligated to tell my dad and then everyone would find out I was running an unregistered animal rescue out of my stepmother’s multi-million dollar mansion.
And that I’d kind of adopted a homeless man and his service dog.
But that was me. Otillie-James Baler, the town screw-up. An Unshown in a family of Alphas and Omegas. The black sheep of polite society. In love with my step-brother and his best friend, but never able to be part of their Pack. Otillie-James Baler, who was never quite good enough.
When I was nine, my grandmother and her friends used to read and swap Harlequin Mills and Boons novels. When I was busted reading one, they started sneaking me boxes full of strong heroines and rugged men. Thus started a long love affair with the romance genre. Then I discovered urban fantasy, and fell in love with broody Alphas and sexy paranormals, and combining them together was a no brainer. Then I discovered Reverse Harem.... Oh my. Why choose, am I right?
it was okay! but a few things lowered the rating for me.
1) a lot of MM. too much. but that's just my opinion. i prefer the heroine to be the main focus.
2) two of the heroes were in love with the heroine for 6 years (SIX. YEARS.) and yet they were just never gonna do anything about it. they had girlfriends throughout the years, while in love with the heroine (???), and they planned on getting an omega to round out their pack at some point. which means their plan was to never be with the heroine, and just continue to scare away any men who are interested in her 🙄
they basically wanted her to be alone forever, while they settle down with an omega and have kids and live happily ever after. they were "in love" with her, but they weren't gonna go against societal expectations and get with someone who's NOT an omega. and that tells me they simply didn't want her enough. i mean, their feelings gotta be incredibly superficial for them to be okay with never being with her.
and when they finally get together with her it's in a very spontaneous moment, not planned at all, which tells me they might have waited another two years or five years, they might've never taken the plunge...
idk, it just felt like they very easily lived their lives without her. like she wasn't good enough as an unawakened omega to eschew tradition. even one of the heroes' mom says she knew her son was in love with the heroine but the mom had concluded he wasn't pursuing her because she wasn't an omega. so yeah. it all left a bad taste in my mouth. and then i wanted the heroine to at least push them away for some time, but nope, she got with them as soon as they deigned to look her way.
i loved the beta hero, though. he was my favorite.

I understand the reasoning for packs and sharing in these stories, as omegas are meant to be very “needy”… I just wish there wasn’t so much MM in a lot of the omegaverse (aside from those written specifically for same sex preference). I just don’t get “Alpha” vibes off dudes who “do” other dudes, personally.
I typically enjoy Grace McGinty's writing, so I was pretty disappointed by this book. It tried to fit too many disparate plot elements into too few pages. I kind of wonder if the author was trying to met a deadline.
In the first half of the book, the main characters have spent years pining for each other. They've held back because they're not sure of the others' feelings, and they're worried about the social impact of a step-sibling relationship in their small town. This part of the book was great: slightly angsty, fun dialogue as we get to know characters, and that sweet anticipation feeling.
The change from not-in-a-relationship to in-a-relationship happens at about 45% and is fairly short, which I actually appreciated. However, as soon as the relationship starts, the characters' concerns about social consequences vanish. They just... cease to exist as a part of the plot, and it's weird. There's not even a, "Huh, I guess we had nothing to worry about after all."
The next thirty percent of the book is the pack coming together, and this is the part that needed the most editing. Lance and Strat's place in the pack felt awkward. Their relationships were underdeveloped, and the author's treatment of Lance's PTSD was shallow. Also, for some reason McGinty began summarizing events instead of writing out a scene, and it left me feeling detached and a little bored.
The last twenty percent was just a clumsy setup for the next book, but by that point I was already skimming.

❥ 𝑶𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆-𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝜗𝜚˚⋆ What an awful name for such a light hearted and likeable character.
❥ 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒆𝒕𝒕, 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒚, 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕 ࣪⋆✮ I liked them. We got two Alphas (Truett and Sony), one Beta (Lance) and one Omega (Strat).
✥ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 Another fun read by the author and I think she develops to be one of these „instant buy“ authors. Her books are funny, well written and have a good plot and love story. Her characters are mostly relatable and we should never forget that an omega verse romcom is supposed to be insta lovy and sometimes kinda cringe. Ottilie and her pack are a good match. Everyone get‘s what he/she needs out of it and I like the fact we got two omegas. It‘s something new and worked well in this book. I enjoyed the tension and the smut was well written. The dialogue is funny and I laughed a lot because Ottilie is such a weird but lovely character. Although it felt kind of forced that Ottilie suddenly presented as an omega. All in all this book was a short and entertaining omega verse read.
So, we're having a crazy wind event here in LA, which resulted in the power being down most of the day ... and so this work day ended up being a kindle-cation day because work was impossible. That's not a complaint. ;)
I grabbed something light and sweet, partially because I read something heavy last, and wanted a change, and partially because I expected to be interrupted with work stuff (didn't happen, no one had power). This was perfect. Pretty low drama, pretty low angst, this was a lovely story of people coming together. The FMC was a bit of a sunshine type, but not in a grating way - she was goddamn adorable, you guys, and that really isn't usually something I'm into - and one of the love interests is her step-brother - also not something I'm usually into, especially because I have step-brothers. I feel like I got body-snatched or something, because it gave me the absolute warm fuzzies and I ate it all up.
We've got some smut here, as you'd expect from a sweet omegaverse, but not as much as you might expect. Basically, this was a character-driven story, as these people all came together and we got to watch the relationships develop. I don't think we got smut until probably the halfway mark, and even then it didn't totally dominate the book. I'd say our ration here was maybe... 70% story, 30% smut. IMO it was perfect, though of course your mileage may vary. Also, for those who care about such things, there were MM relationships here. Even though the FMC was the center around which they all revolved, there was also a male omega and fulfilling relationships among the male characters too. It's probably more poly than RH.
Re-read Dec 2025 Just have to edit to add that on re-read, I think I loved it even more, so it wasn't some weird bodysnatch moment. This book is just wonderful. I've added my favorites tag.
PERSONALLY I’ve decided I don’t like the omegaverse.
Don’t get me wrong, this book was still well written, the plot was good, all the characters were good but idk I just don’t like the omegaverse when actual shifters aren’t involved??? Like why are you rubbing your head all over someone but you don’t turn into an animal??? Idk it’s just weird to me. If you’re going to do all of that then just turn into a wolf or something.
cute with a quirky fmc who didn’t make me want to gouge my eyeballs out <3 her love for animals and spontaneous (reckless) rescues was probably my favorite part of this book
I know this was fiction but Rock Hill SC is not some gentile Southern town😆. It’s actually very near to the south side of Charlotte NC, sort of has a big urban feel to it even tho it’s a small city and while it’s been a long time since I worked in that city (I was there weekly as a sales rep), it was also sort of dumpy unless you were on a golf course. Not much was around away from the highway.
Not the town I would pick to represent ABO Southern ritzy culture. There was nothing remarkable about the place. I would have picked Charleston SC. Or even the area around Lake Norman like Huntersville, north of Charlotte. Where all the wealthy folks live on the lake. Again, it’s fiction. Whatever. But there are so many more towns to choose from than RH. No one wants to be the queen of society in Rock Hill. It’s not saying much. So, right off the bat, I couldn’t fall into the story bc the Rock Hill that I have seen and know to be true just wasn’t what was being written. Fiction. I. Know. But 🤷🏻♀️
I had issues w the fmc. She came across as TSTL, extremely stubborn and not at all in touch with reality. Seeing as I have read plenty of ABO books that offer us that slice of fantasy w the omega thing but also w fmc’s that are still smart, I know it’s possible to do so. I also have several close friends that rescue animals. They are not idiots just saving animals left right center while risking their own lives and being fools. I know this was perhaps suppose to read as funny but it missed the fun for me.
I am not a super fan of heavy MM relationships centered in my RH books esp when it supersedes the fmc’s relationships. This one vaulted over to that side. Not my preferred trope. If it’s yours, then you might like this one!!
Pack Darling did this MF MM two omegas blend VERY well. This one rocked too far over into being mainly an MM romance book with a vagina on the side. There were times I wondered why the author even had an fmc🤷🏻♀️. Nothing wrong w that but it’s not what I was expecting to read.
I was also never truly convinced they really loved OJ. Or Juice.😵💫🤦🏻♀️OMG the name of our fmc just stinks. Tone deaf. Anyone nicknaming an fmc after a murdering ex football player OJ for shits and giggles is gross. I took a star off for that because it was SUPER insensitive.
Again, if you want your RH more poly w heavy MM then this book might be for you. It wasn’t a book I enjoyed reading nor want to ever read again.

Awwww. I loved this. Honestly I wasn't sure I was going to love Otillie-James from the blurb but she was so unabashed herself. No manic pixie dream girl, no I'm so special, she was just her - an Unshown (not yet designated) helplessly in love with a stepbrother and his best friend. Despite the pining, they are all just getting in with life till OJ is arrested with a c*ck stuffed under her shirt in a rescue gone wrong
In comes brothers best friend, and the ADA who is an omega , and we discover she has also been sheltering a homeless man 😂
These all come together, along with OJ's brother in a way that is seamless and so logical
The plot was fun. The characters with enough depth that I could relate (often not the case with this trope. I'd still have lived more but I get but everyone want to read something that long 🤷♀️)
Otillie-James has a penchant for acting first and thinking later. Combined with one hell of a knack for finding trouble, she is constantly getting herself into sticky situations that she needs saving from--especially when it comes to rescuing animals. I loved her instantly.
Between the bickering and bantering she had going back and forth with Truett and Sonny, the sweet friendship with Lancelot, and the crackling tension with Strat... I ate this up. I loved how messy and chaotic everything about this was, and found their Pack adorable.
What to expect: - omegaverse - stepbrother romance - brother's best friend - rivals to lovers (Truett + Strat) - mental illness rep - nesting, heats, knotting
I love this author, but I really wish that this book didn’t feel like they only wanted her halfway or partially and then she became in omega and then all of a sudden she was the end I’ll be all
Also, I didn’t really enjoy that dynamics to be honest and it definitely wasn’t funny. It was just kind of meh
I loved this one—until it all of the sudden ended and felt unfinished.
Everything was going amazing until the last 15%. Quite suddenly, everything was wrapping up. It was so rushed that there isn’t a full sex scene with one of the characters. Intimate moments, yes, but no actual penetrative sex. It’s not everything, but in a rh where every other character had it in spades—it felt really unresolved.
There was also the issue of reputations and social fallout. There was a lot of buildup of how OJ would never be accepted because she was unshown or how taboo it was because Sonny and she were step siblings, but it was never mentioned again once she designated. 🤷🏻♀️ Why make it such a big foreshadow point if there’s no follow through or real resolution for it? It was mentioned several times about how they wouldn’t be accepted because of two omegas or the step sibling aspect, but there was no real mention of it after that.
However, my criticism aside Grace comes through with character development and differing personalities. It’s hard to write RH and have so many MMCs with different personalities, but Grace does it flawlessly where we’re able to really see the different personalities and quirks shine through. Usually we just see an odd meshing of personalities with the more MMCs there are, but that’s never an issue with her books.
I also want to say that I ✨love✨ a spicy, take no nonsense Omega and Grace is perfection at delivering those. Tryst (Tryst in the Dark) will forever be one of my favorite FMC omegas because of that, and OJ was no different. An omega that punches and doesn’t bow to alpha nonsense will always be top tier for me.
I also appreciated the hysterical quirks of OJ and her animal hoarding/rescuing. It was spectacular and the dramatic comedy definitely came through. The goose that collected and mothered all the random birds was my favorite, as well as the super obese dog.
3.75 stars for me, 90% because of the rushed ending and weird foreshadowing that went unresolved.
4.3 stars. I really enjoyed this one. I had my doubts, because the first time I read a series from this author and it just wasn’t my favorite. Maybe I just don’t love mpreg.🤷🏻♀️ I will say, I feel like we could’ve gotten more development for the pack’s relationship with Strat. I feel like the author was trying to appease two separate audiences. She made the main focus of the book the FMC, but the pack was equally courting both Otillie and Strat. So it ended up feeling like a lot was left off page. I still enjoyed it. I just feel like the author should’ve chosen between the two in this situation. Either have the FMC be the only omega and the pack focused on her becoming their center, or have two omegas at the center sharing the spotlight and getting a more equal ‘air time’ ratio. This version of mixing both just didn’t cut it for me.
The first half of the book > than the last half. Once the romance picks up I kinda lost interest. It went from funny, sweet, longing, pining - to 10000%. It was a bit jarring. Otherwise, it's super cute.
Started out great. I lol’d and loved Lance. But as it went on, I didn’t really feel like any of them besides Lance actually loved Tillie. And how convenient that she became an omega when they wouldn’t be with her because because she was unshown. I feel like strat and the alphas should have been together and then Tillie and Lance by themselves. She even said “atleast I’m an omega now so you’re not settling”. They never really proved that they would have chosen her. They in fact made it clear that if an omega came in and didn’t like her, she’d be put to the side. But also, where were our moments with Lance and Tillie? It was a lot of mm and nothing for the beta that wasn’t bi. 👎

It was a nice and cute rom com. I really don't get it how some people complain about there being LOTS of MM. It's ridiculous because we didn't even get a detailed MM scene. Which pissed me off. It was unfair to Strat. Really. I felt bad for him.
I'm still trying to find a poly OV book where the male omega isn't tossed aside and forgotten. It's RARE. ugh.
Felt rushed in places. Also not sure why they scolded her for bonding Lance saying she took his choice away when he clearly asked for jt. Sometimes it felt like the alphas didn’t really like her. Luckily this was a quick read because I’d hate to waste tons of time on this.
I liked the characters. I liked how they talked to each other and supported each other. I liked how the step-sibling part was handled by all involved. There was enough OV spice to make me happy, but I always want more. I don't always love two Omega packs and this was OK for as far as that goes. There is a setup for a spinoff and I hope we get that book.
***NOTE*** This is not a rom-com. There are absolutely humorous and fun parts however a good portion of the side plot has to deal with taking down a cockfighting and animal abuse ring and needed a content warning. It wasn't so graphic that I was upset, but it was graphic enough to be a big bummer. And it does have animal euthanasia.
I was fully invested in this story! I wouldn’t say this is a romcom it wasn’t as light and airy as I was expecting. I really enjoyed this one. MMMFM 👌🏾🔥 The spice was next level. I just need more of the couple. But if you like suspenseful, people who are recovering from trauma, omegaverse, forbidden, stepbrother/ brother best friend, spicy spicy books then give this one a try!! 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ sidenote all the animals will live rent free in my head.
Honestly, I forgot I preordered this so it really was a little Christmas gift to myself. Absolutely delightful. I tore through it. Highly highly recommend. Grace McGinty has definitely become a no questions asked author for me, I will read anything she puts out. Stunning. No notes. ✌️😏
This was adorable. Wasn’t super heavy on any dramatics but had a great balance of serious topics and funny moments to keep a flow from start to finish.
The relationships between each character was fleshed out nicely. With OJ obviously being the center of the pack, I think Strat’s role & his marking moment was done perfectly.
The animals, especially Spartacus and his love for Gert and Rufio the crack den African Grey, were the stars in my eyes though 😂
We have rescue dogs, swearing parrots, kittens, stepbrother plus his best friend, veterans, animal activism, omega heats and goats that just can't get enough azaleas.
Otille-James or OJ for short was raised by her dad away from high society or much civilization at all so isn't really used to the Alpha/Omega hierarchy but when she's 16 he gets married and she's thrown into a high society with an alpha stepbrother and his best friend that she just can't keep her mind off. She is an undesignated though so resigns to knowing she will never have an alpha but she doesn't let that stop her. She's strong willed, sassy and rescues animals (what more could you want).
After getting busted by the cops with a cock in her shirt her whole life starts to take different directions, a beta who saved her days prior just keeps getting more attractive looking, her stepbrother comes home to watch her, his best friend is her lawyer and the omega DA they work with is definitely hitting on her.
This book had a great amount of story that was intriguing, wholesome, funny and sprinkled with action. Then there was the touches of romance, seduction and spice 🥵
I definitely recommend Graces books overall but this one is a beautiful lighter romance with a HEA that's gotten me excited to explore the omegaverse more.
Im super greatful to have been able to read this as an ARC and as always have reviewed it honestly.
Strong FMC, surrounded by really good-looking men, and a LOT of animal rescue…what more could you want from a book! The characters were so well built, and the way she wrote PTSD and military trauma was really well done!! There wasn't as much smut as I expected, although I really liked the caring and supportiveness and courting each other that the Pack all did. The book pulled at the heart strings. It was very funny in parts, and very sad in parts too! This was my introduction to the Omegaverse, and Oh. My. God!! I will be reading all of her books here on out!
