The Great British Baking Show meets a cozy mystery with a contemporary romance and a Regency-era twist.
"Connolly, known for romances, ably opens this new ro-mystery series, crafting a slow, charming, sweet fall and filling the case with details of baking, estate living, and reality TV filming." --Library Journal
When Claire Walker is selected to be a contestant on the immensely popular cooking show, Britian’s Battle of the Bakers, she is thrilled. She can’t wait to spend eight enchanting weeks baking at the picturesque estate of Blackfirth Park. She can almost smell the fresh pastries wafting through the air as she and her fellow contestants use historical equipment to bring pre-1900s recipes to life. If she can win the fifty thousand pounds, she’ll be able to ditch her teaching job and launch her baking career.
The Viscount of Colburn, Jonathan Ainsley, is the custodian of Blackfirth Park and an eligible bachelor. With his family’s income dwindling, he reluctantly agrees to host the entire production team, but he refuses to participate since he’s had enough of single women who see him as nothing more than a potential conquest. But when a contestant is found dead soon after filming begins, Jonathan is forced to get involved. To make matters worse, the baker’s death is eerily similar to the legendary death of the tenth Viscountess of Colburn two hundred and fifty years earlier, which sends rumors racing through the estate.
Even as suspicion falls on some of the bakers, a decidedly different kind of heat begins to simmer between Claire and Jonathan. If they are to have any hope of a future romance, they must first solve the mystery before the show gets canceled or someone else falls prey to the Blackfirth Park ghost.
I was born once upon a time, and I started making up stories right away. Eventually, I started writing them down, and never stopped! I have a day job, which gets in the way of my writing, but it pays the bills so I CAN write, so I guess that's okay! I am a bookworm, which I think is key to being a writer, and I am always looking for inspiration! I live in Indiana, am obsessed with hot chocolate, and I am on track to be the best aunt in the world.
If a baking competition was being filmed on a potentially haunted estate, I'd definitely be signing up! I wanna meet all the ghosts!
I wasn't completely sure about this book at first, but then the banter between Claire and Jonathan started, and I was sold. They really carried this, even though the mystery and baking parts were interesting as well, but I 100% stayed for the two of them.
As a fan of sweet treats, I lovedddd the descriptions we got of the different desserts the contestants were making, and often wished I was there so I could taste them myself.
I haven't seen the exact show this was inspired by, but I have seen similar ones, and now I want to watch all of them again. Connolly captured the energy of these types of shows perfectly.
The mystery was a cozy one, and fit very well with the rest of the book. You'll probably figure out the culprit before the characters do, but that won't hinder your enjoyment.
I loved the little historical tidbits as well, you can tell the author normally writes in that genre. It actually felt a lot like a regency romance, only with cameras involved.
I'm glad it's going to be a series, I can't wait for the next one.
This is the first book in the Claire Walker Mystery series, and while the premise initially intrigued me, the execution ultimately fell flat.
The story introduces Claire Walker, a Year 7 teacher who dreams of becoming a baker. That dream leads her to enter Britain’s Battle of the Bakers, a television competition currently suffering from mediocre ratings. In an effort to boost interest, the show is filmed at a Viscount’s estate, with the Viscount himself still in residence.
What is meant to add intrigue for the baking show, instead becomes the backdrop for a suspicious death that local authorities are quick to dismiss as accidental.
Claire, unconvinced, steps into the role of amateur sleuth. As she presses the police to reconsider their conclusions, she draws the attention of the real culprit—whose motivation feels underdeveloped and is never meaningfully scrutinized by investigators. This lack of depth in both the mystery and the investigation weakens the overall tension, making it difficult to stay invested as a reader.
There is also a romantic subplot between Claire and the Viscount that, while likely intended to add charm, feels rushed and lacks the chemistry needed to be truly engaging or convincing.
Overall, the story felt shallow and predictable, with a mystery that never quite comes together in a compelling way. I found myself skimming pages, hoping for a stronger sense of momentum or originality.
The best part of the book is the inclusion of recipes at the end for any aspiring bakers—among them crème brûlée, Chelsea buns, steamed treacle pudding, and Victoria sponge cake. 😋
While this book didn’t quite work for me, readers who enjoy baking-themed cozy mysteries may have a very different experience. I recommend reading other reviews to get a broader range of perspectives, as I may be an outlier.
Goodness! That was a fun read! I liked the English manor setting with all the delicious sounding food references! I’ve always been a sucker for baking shows so I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
I will say, this is a hard one when you’re on a diet and really craving pretty much anything loaded with sugar, butter, and carbs. :) If you have enough self-control to abstain from grabbing a treat while reading this, you’re better than me. I caved and had pie with ice cream. 😅
Jonny was adorable with this reclusive personality and how he cared about Claire’s passions. :) I feel like if I say anything else, it would spoil the story. So instead of saying something I shouldn’t, know that it was a fun read and I 10/10 recommend.
I was originally going to give this a 2.5 rounded up to a 3, but I could not do it. There was one stupid little thing that made it impossible for me to give this anything higher than that rounded-to 2 stars. That one stupid thing was the cursing with baked goods. That felt so immature, childish and ridiculous. I am NEVER going to be able to take someone saying "oh, baguette!" seriously.
I wanted to read this because I thought that the premise sounded really unique: a murder mystery centered around a baking school/competition. I've never read anything even remotely similar to that.
But this was written in a very immature and choppy manner. And I just couldn't get into it. Especially with how annoying and flat I found all the characters to be. I really am such a character-based reader. You need to give me someone to want to root for!
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
'Death, ghosts, cheating. This was not the experience she thought she would be having on this show.'
This book is such a fun combination of so many of my favorite things:
-Hilarious banter and dialogue that I have come to love from this author. -A great setting and intriguing plot. -A dash of mystery -Swoony romance woven throughout with the grumpiest grump... oh yeah, he's also a Viscount living on an estate that just might be haunted.
Claire is such a fun character. She speaks her mind in baking expletives, knows her way around all types of recipes/ingredients/bakes, and gets herself into some interesting situations.
'Of all the stupid things I have ever done in my life, this takes the actual cake.'
Jonny is your favorite type of grump. Grumpy on the outside, but has the best kind of heart. Jonny has a great character arc that you're waiting and hoping Claire can chip away at it.
I have not watched any baking shows or competitions but after reading this book I feel like I desperately need to start. If you're already watching those, and love them, you absolutely need to read this one.
I am thrilled to know this is going to be a series and cannot wait to see what comes next.
Baking, murder, ghosts, romance...what more can a reader ask for?
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Trigger: murder (FMC finds victim on page), suspicion, mentions of ghost, cozy mystery, romance-kisses only.
A fun clean cozy mystery with romance amid a British baking competition. I loved the characters, the setting, and the delicious descriptions of food. Looking forward to the next in the series!
There were several things I enjoyed about this book, though ultimately it didn't quite work for me. I thought the tribute to the Great British Baking Show was so fun, and if you've ever seen any seasons of that you'll be able to picture the setting, the cast, and the hosts so easily! I also really liked the two leads: Claire, the competent and outwardly calm baker, and Jonny, the slightly grumbly viscount on whose property the show is being filmed. They were great together. That said, the mystery in this book was (pardon the pun) a bit under-baked. There were really no surprises in the outworking of the plot. Also, the habit Claire and Jonny had of replacing potential expletives with baking terms was a bit jarring and overly cutesy, especially at serious or somber moments. This wasn't quite right for me, but I could see myself enjoying a non-mystery contemporary romance by Rebecca Connolly (as I've already enjoyed many of her Regency ones).
Thanks to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for this ARC!
Mystery and spice and everything nice! I picked up "The Crime Brulee Bake Off" by Rebecca Connolly mostly because The Great British Bake Off is one of my favourite TV shows, and overall I had a great time reading it.
Throughout the book, we follow Claire Walker as she takes a leave of absence from her teaching job to take part in Britain's most famous baking competition. Her season takes place at an estate with a history of an unresolved murder. A person being found dead at the scen early on turns Claire's time at Blackfirth into something bigger than baking.
It was thouroughly an enjoyable read. Being my first cozy mystery, I did find some of the various people's reactions to events that transpired a bit subdued to how one might think you'd usually behave, but I assume it's a part of the subgenre. Although it was more cozy mystery than a crime with a romance subplot, I found the blossoming romance between Claire and John quite charming. The mystery aspect of it had me suspecting few different people, and at the end I started doubting myself even though the outcome seemed clear, so that was definitely a plus for me. And as a fan of the show parts of the story was based on, I had a fun time trying to match which characters in the book were based on actual people.
I'll be looking forward to reading more books from the series. This one does get a Hollywood handshake from me!
Thank you to NetGalley, Shadow Mountain Publishing and Rebecca Connolly for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a review.
I haven't watched the Great British Bake Off but I love baked goods and cozy mysteries. I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames (she was a nurse) mysteries so my love of mysteries goes WAY back. When I learned one of my favorite writers had a new culinary cozy mystery series coming out I knew I had to read it and "Crepes alive" what a fun read this was!
Claire Walker is a teacher with dreams of baking glory who wins a spot as a contestant on "Britain's Battle of the Bakers," set against the stunning backdrop of Blackfirth Park. Claire is there to win the prize money to open a bakery. She didn't count on helping to solve a murder or catching the eye of a somewhat grumpy Viscount Jonathan Ainsley, owner of the estate. Jonathan isn't too happy about the show being filmed there, but the show needs better ratings and he needs the money to run Blackfirth Park, so here we are.
I loved the interactions between Claire and Jonathan from start to finish. Her sunny disposition helped him not be so dour about the show filming on his property and we got to see his real personality emerge. The forced proximity created by the murder mystery fueled the chemistry that was already sparking between Claire and Jonathan. Their interactions are witty and filled with a slow-burn tension that keeps you rooting for them. I loved watching them follow the clues and solve the mystery.
In addition to the yummy romance blossoming between the main characters, the descriptions of the pastries are enough to make your mouth water! The inclusion of recipes at the end of the story was a delightful bonus! Be prepared to be whisked away by this cozy and captivating read. Fans of baking shows, historical estates, and lighthearted mysteries with a dash of romance will find this book a scrumptious treat.
I received a paperback copy from the publisher and a digital arc from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
This book is brings two of my absolute favorite things in a book, cozy mysteries and baking shows. GBBS is a staple at my house and I don’t even bake!
I loved every page of the book. Not only did it have an intriguing mystery but a blooming romance and competition baking. Jonny and Claire were lovely together. Jonny and his grumpy, Viscountness. Claire with her kindness, and baking knowledge, I was hooked from the start.
Jonny and Claire were delightful, as was the entire cast of characters. All were so well done. I loved their involvement in the murder mystery sleuthing. The history that occurs at Blackfirth ties the story to the present in an enjoyable way. There is humor, mystery, romance, and food! I can’t wait for another Claire Walker Mystery!
I received a paperback ARC from the author and a NetGalley link. All views are my own.
3.5 stars. I stuck this out because I liked the characters. The selling point is really the baking competition setting and the banter/chemistry between the leads, much more than the mystery. I enjoyed it enough that I’d continue the series and just hope for a stronger plot.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT Amateur baker Claire Walker is thrilled to be a contestant on Britain’s Battle of the Bakers. She can almost smell the fresh pastries wafting through the air. If she can win the grand prize, she can ditch her teaching job and launch her baking career.
The Viscount of Colburn, Jonathan Ainsley, is the custodian of Blackfirth Park and an eligible bachelor. He reluctantly agrees to allow the cooking competition show to film on his estate, but when a contestant is found dead soon after filming begins, Jonathan is forced to get involved. To make matters worse, the baker’s death stirs up rumors of the legendary death of the tenth Viscountess of Colburn two hundred and fifty years earlier.
Even as suspicion falls on some of the bakers, a decidedly different kind of heat begins to simmer between Claire and Jonathan. If they are to have any hope of a future romance, they must first solve the mystery before the show gets canceled or someone else falls prey to what some believe is the Blackfirth Park ghost.
MY TAKE A fun romance with culinary mystery to solve. I enjoyed both Claire and Johnny and the way they connected. I especially loved her culinary swear words and how he picked up on it.
The situation with the mystery added an interesting twist, though it came in second to the romance for me. 4.5 stars. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a good job.
Sometimes us thriller lovers just need a good cozy mystery and what better storyline to combine with than a baking show, the countryside and a classic historical English Estate as the location ?!
I loved “The Golden Spoon” by Jessa Maxwell so when I read the book description and it was giving similar vibes I knew I should give this one a try.
If you enjoy the wholesome feel and drama of baking shows then you’ll enjoy this genre! Just be pre-warned the food sounds delicious so if you’re on your January new years goals of no sugar make sure to not read when hungry 😂
Expect a murder mystery but don’t expect thriller vibes, this is very much a cosy read and easily digestible.
Thank you to the author, and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the EARC!
This story was a mix of a baking competition show and an Agatha Christie novel. I really enjoyed the characters. I liked that there was a murder mystery with romance happening as well. Claire and Jonathan work together to solve the crime and fall in love along the way and they make a cute couple. I did figure out whodunnit because it was very similar to an Agatha Christie novel but I didn’t mind figuring it out. One minor thing I didn’t prefer was Claire using baking words/ foods in place of swear words. Just got too repetitive but it was kinda cute. Overall, I really enjoyed the story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Content: murder
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I’m going to be honest, I have never seen the Great British Bake Off, so some of this may have been lost on me. I have however, read many, many cozy mysteries. Culinary cozies (those involving some type of food, dessert shop or restaurant) are some of my favorites. And I love reading about amateur sleuths solving crimes with or without the help of the authorities.
I have never read a cozy mystery with such a reluctant pair of would be sleuths. Claire (a teacher turned baking show contestant) and Jonathan (Viscount Colburn, lending his estate for the filming) are likable characters in nearly every way. Except that they drag their feet and do little to no actual investigating. They do agree to help the local detective, and Claire is very useful in the end.
Along the way there is much to enjoy: baking, a historical English country house with a mystery of its own, interesting contestants (who could have caused even more reality show drama), and a budding romance for our main characters.
I would read future books of this series because I enjoyed the writing. But I hope that there will be tougher mysteries. Maybe Claire has a taste for solving crime now or will she continue to be a reluctant sleuth? I look forward to finding out.
3.5 stars rounded up. My thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing for the advanced copy to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Connolly married two of my favourite things in this delicious book—baking shows and murder mysteries!
For all my fellow Great British Menu & Great British Bake Off lovers, this is the book for you.
What happens when the lead baker on a bake-off competition ends up dead one night after filming? And there’s a local murder legend too close for comfort and no one seems to be taking the case seriously? Claire Walker & Viscount Jonathan Ainsley are on the case!
For the seasoned, veteran mystery consumer, the identity of the murderer probably won’t be a surprise. But the motive? Yeah, that’s the part I couldn’t figure out, and it was a SURPRISE.
I loved Claire and Jonny. They have the cutest slow burn romance that’s really just delightful! And the whole baker “family” was such a fun cast dynamic. (Though I do have unanswered questions about a few of them). Be prepared for this book to make you hungry because the array of desserts sounded HEAVENLY.
And that TITLE! I didn’t even need to read the blurb to know I needed this book. A clever play on words will always be a way to my heart.
I can’t wait to see if we get another Claire Walker mystery and get more Claire & Jonny cuteness—because I definitely need more!
*Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
This book was an absolute delight to read. I enjoyed every single moment from the first to the last page, and dearly hope that Connolly will continue with more mysteries in the future. While I wouldn’t say I am a connoisseur of the British Bake Off television show, I do really enjoy it. As soon as I learned of this book and its FMC’s participation in the fictional world’s Bake Off television program, I knew I had to read it. And I’m so glad I did! I could honestly go for another read, because it was just so refreshing and delightful. I really loved Claire. Her personality was so open and endearing, and I felt like all of her reactions to what was going around her were perfectly written. I loved her curiosity and humility, and how she decided to go for this dream of baking for this television program. She’s just adorable. I loved her. Oh! And I absolutely loved her food-related “swear words.” My sister actually does something similar and it cracked me up hearing the ones that Claire tried. Where Claire is sunshine, Jonathan is grumpy—except for where Claire is concerned. I’m always a sucker for a “he falls first” trope, and the way Jonathan fell for Claire was so cute. I loved that she brought out his protective, loyal nature, and how much he craved being around her. It was a perfectly written romance, where the two MC’s completed one another in essential ways. The murder mystery kept me on my toes for much of the time. I may have guessed at the perpetrator a few chapters before our sleuths did, but the motive kept me guessing for a good long while. There were others with a motive that I knew of and guessed them first. Add in a couple of red herrings, and it kept me wondering for quite awhile. I loved how the tension of the mystery bled over into the show and thought Connolly did a fantastic job showing the strain on the relationships between the characters. It’s really just a very delightful book and would encourage anyone who loves romance, baking, and murder mysteries to give it a try.
TW/CW: murder and attempted murder; mention of blood and murder weapons; death previous to book
**many thanks to the publisher for the book. This review was not required and is my express opinion.
This was definitely a cozy read and would suit someone who just wishes to relax and/or is new to murder mysteries.
The premise is a fun blend of cozy mystery and romance, but unfortunately I feel like it didn't deliver on either of those genres. The romance is very bland and barely there, and the murder mystery investigations are non-existent. Our main characters just walk around the estate talking about how they have no experience and no clue how to solve a murder, then things just conveniently happen, and then they carry on same as before. While this seems quite realistic, it doesn't make for an entertaining read. The "reveal" in the end felt completely unsatisfying to me, it was not expanded on or set up in any way, and the murderer's motivation was extremely shaky.
From the cover and marketing of the book, it seems like it's a crime novel first, and romance second, so it's disappointing that the novel doesn't deliver on either. If you read a lot of mystery, this story will not satisfy that particular itch.
The only positive and definitely strong part of this book was the descriptions of baking. In my case, however, it wasn't enough to redeem the story.
I have received a proof copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
my GOODNESS did this make me want a pastry. 😂 I love a cozy mystery, so even though I've [embarrassingly] never watched "The Great British Bake-Off", I understand the concept enough to be into the idea of mashing up the two. The setting, the cast, it was all so cozy and lovely and fun! I enjoy Connolly's writing style, and I like Claire a lot as a lead. (I'll absolutely read any and all sequels we may get, please and thank you)
I usually enjoy a romantic subplot to a mystery, but for some reason it felt... out of place here, almost? Like, don't get me wrong, I like Claire and Jonny enough separately to like them together, but idk something about it felt off and I can't put my finger on why. That said, though, I'd happily read more books featuring the two of them. So. There's that.
Overall this was fun! I had a good time, and that's all I ask for when it comes to a cozy, lol! 4 stars from me!
**I received a copy of this book from the publisher. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**
Loved the baking references and inside info to baking shows. Long romance burn and left me with the desire to make macaroons! Fun listen with excellent audio voice !!
Mystery combined with romance is one of my favorite combinations. I was so excited to receive an ARC copy of this book!
The setting is a historic manner in England. The main female character, Claire, is a contestant on a baking show. The main male character, Jonny, is an English Viscount, who is letting his property for the baking show. I loved these two together. Grumpy/sunshine vibes that made such a great detective team.
I loved the hilarious banter, the witty way the main characters converse using baking words, a historic mystery, family history, and characters so unique they stay with me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for sending me this ARC! This was such a cozy story, despite it being a murder mystery. It felt warm and comforting in a way I wasn't expecting.
I was afraid that the plot would focus too much on the actual baking competition, but was pleasantly surprised that the actual baking scenes meshed really with with the mystery and romance plots of the story. I was really rooting for the romance and it had a nice slow-burn, but I did find myself way more invested in that than the investigation.
The story did become quite repetitive, and nothing really happened for a large chunk of the story other than our main characters talking about how out of their depths they were (duh!). There were enough red herrings tossed to lead the characters and readers around in circles, and kept me guessing every step of the way.
I am very curious to see how this series can continue in the small town of Blackfirth, as I am not really sure how much further you can expand the characters and crimes.
I loved the addition of the recipes at the end of the book as well! What a lovely touch!
Rebecca Connolly has ventured into a beloved genre with impeccable accuracy, delivering the ultimate balance between all the ingredients for a fulfilling story. The combination of a whodunit cozy murder mystery and a competition baking show, with a sprinkle of romance, set in England gave the perfect vibes for satiating read.
Claire is a likable amateur baker and is sequestered on an estate for this contest. Viscount Jonathan Ainsley wants nothing to do with the show and is very stand-offish, but an unlikely bond begins to form between these two and when one contestant ends up dead, they join forces (with others) to solve the mystery. I enjoyed the natural progression of their relationship, as well as the way an age-old mystery involving the estate along with the current mystery, are revealed.
There are a slew of twists and turns that keep this story interesting and the narrator is phenomenal. It was exciting to see what dishes these chefs came up with and the way the friendships and rivalries developed. I’m anticipating what will come next with this series.
Content: death/peril (not graphic); mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were voluntarily given*
I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley.
The Great British Bake Off is my very favorite show. I’ve watched every available season in the US. I also love cozy mysteries. The very premise of this book made it a must-read.
Claire is a teacher who loves baking. When she makes the cut to be on Britain’s Battle of the Bakers, she sees the opportunity to fund her own bakery at long last. She settles into the filming schedule on historic Blackfirth Park, a place notorious for a murder centuries ago. She soon meets the grumpy viscount, Jonny, and sparks begin to fly… and then another contestant is found dead. The local inspector agrees with them that the situation looks suspicious, but his superiors want everything quiet. It’s up to Claire and Jonny to find the murderer.
This book hit the cozy vibe I needed at a stressful time. The Bake Off elements were right, the historical bakes fun (and there are several recipes at the end), and I adored the sweet romance. My only complaint is the suspect is clear early on and the mystery stays pretty linear. That didn’t dim my enjoyment, though. This read is a lot of fun!
One day, I went to my mailbox and imagine my surprise as I had received an ARC of those lovely book! I was so excited and immediately got down to business reading the book! I have always been a huge fan of Rebecca Connolly and I loved this cozy murder mystery/romance. It is my favorite genre and I am absolutely looking forward to the next book!
* thank you to shadow Mountain publishing for taking a chance on an unknown kid!
When Claire Walker signs up for Britain’s Battle of the Bakers, she gets more than she bargained for. One of her fellow bakers is dead, it mirrors an unsolved mystery on the estate, and the inspector has been told to stay out of it. He tasks Claire Walker and the estate owner, Jonathan Ainsley with the task of investigating what he cannot.
The setting made me feel like I was going back in time, when it was really just a jaunt across the pond. I loved the mystery and the romance. Since the cover has “A Claire Walker Mystery” on it, I hope that means we’ll be seeing more of this dynamic duo. Well done!
What an exciting story! I loved the mix of murder mystery and cozy contemporary romance. It’s such a fun combination and makes murder mysteries a bit more accessible for a scardy-cat like me! I felt for Claire! She was a super relatable character, just a normal woman who loved to bake! I admired her courage and clear head. Even in the midst of the mystery, she tried to help those around her. I loved her interactions with bakers and the people of the estate. She felt very real and I was rooting for her! Johnny was so sweet. He definitely was more reserved and was not nearly as excited about the show. He quickly got pulled into all the excitement and chaos though! I admired his care of his responsibilities and his family. He wanted to do right by them all. I loved Johnny and Claire together! They really supported one another and worked well together. The mystery forced them together and showcased their character. The murder was really exciting! I feel like it helped move the story along. I also really liked some of the side characters, who just added to the story! This is a cozy murder mystery with a romantic subplot. It has a non-graphic murder and only kissing. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
