Jace Holloway is the newest detective at Stonewall Investigations-NYC, and his first case has already consumed him. A serial killer dubbed "Nevermore" is terrorizing the city, leaving victims with black feathers embedded in their shoulders. But as Jace digs deeper, he uncovers a sinister blackmail ring targeting the rich and powerful—a trail that seems to intertwine with Nevermore’s deadly spree.
The investigation isn’t Jace's only obsession. Enter Theo Glass—tall, tattooed, and magnetic. Theo saves Jace’s life one moment and steals his breath the next during a chance encounter at a bathhouse. Their chemistry is raw, electric, and undeniable. But Theo is playing a dangerous game.
Because Theo is the very killer Jace is hunting. At first, Theo revels in the thrill of staying one step ahead, but as their connection deepens, the lines between hunter and hunted blur, pulling them both into a dark spiral of passion and obsession.
As Jace closes in on the truth, the final pieces of the puzzle force an impossible Will Jace’s pursuit of justice and Theo’s desperate search for redemption destroy them—or bind them together forever?
3.5 stars…. The storyline was really entertaining. Theo was insane but cute & Jace had no way of getting away from his stalking ass. But there was a ton of holes in the plot & the fact that some 20 something guys could take down a trained military man was just super unrealistic to me….yes I know it’s fiction but that was just hilariously stupid. But overall the book was entertaining.
This is a different sort of mystery. It is unique in that the reader knows the identity of the killer from the beginning. This is an interesting and intriguing concept that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. The relationship between the two main characters is twisted and toxic yet it works for them. There is much underlying the plot of the story and both characters are deep and complex. There are many layers to peel back in this book. It will keep you entertained the entire time. Do heed the trigger warnings listed at the beginning of the book. This is dark and while a good read it won’t be for everyone.
Jace was a new employee of Stonewall investigations with Zane Holden as the owner. As an excop Jace gets his first case of a murder to solve. I loved and hated the prologue as we get a setup for a hint to want is to come for Theo but without the major plot. Chapter One, we’re dropped into a gruesome scene of a murder which becomes two, yuccky descriptions I which skimmed past as I am easily triggered. Jace meets a hunky stranger who saves him from getting too close to a car. Theo was his white knight….but later its skeptical of what's said and done. Re-meeting a second time things get h🔥t. Theo was playing a game in which Jace the P.I. gets drawn into Theo’s world after their hook up. Scenes progress as both characters chase the dangerous game as it were although not a game at all. Both Jace and Theo have a horrible past growing up as baggage. Both characters draw close and slowly fall in love, hot sexy scenes included which I loved their chemistry.
This is a book for the reader to test their assumptions for the character plays. A dark drama which the boundary gets stretched for Jace and his job. I have read a few Stonewall book series. Plot twists and dramas fill the ending of the book. Both povs included a good ending. *I received an advance reader copy and this is my honest review.
5/5⭐️ My first read my Max Walker and definitely will not be my last. This book combined so many of my favorite things. As a Law and Order and true crime junkie, I was into the plot right away. Theo and Jace were fantastic main characters and I can relate to both of them. I went slow because I didn’t want it to end but honestly could have flew through it faster.
Theo’s sister “committed suicide” while investigating someone. He decided to continue her investigation and kill all those involved. He has been dubbed Nevermore. Jace is the investigator assigned the case.
Sidenote….why is an outside investigator working on a serial killer case? Is this normal? Like do the police and FBI get help from these independent groups often or is this part of the story far fetched? Genuinely curious.
Anyway, Theo knows Jace is the one looking into the case, so he stalks him. And becomes obsessed. Bumping into him randomly. They meet at a bathhouse on several occasions, hooking up. (Also, these are real? That’s crazy!) They eventually go on some actual dates. Go to each other’s apartments. Talk about their mental health issues. Become close.
Then during one kill, Theo learns it is his father that is behind the blackmail ring. He can finally stop killing the underlings and go straight to the head, the person who abused him his whole childhood.
I didn’t even read the last couple of chapters. Just skimmed to see if anything else happened. Seems like they confessed their undying love after Jace was kidnapped by Theo’s father and then Theo rescued him and killed his father. But the dad kept saying he wasn’t the top of the chain, so? HEA.
IDK it’s was an OK story. The spice was spicy. 🤷🏼♀️
Three to four deaths within the first few chapters was a little too much methinks. And there will be some who'd appreciate the special kind of dynamic between the MCs ... not me alas. Neither appealed to me particularly and the traumatized background of one - resulting in some psychopathic tendencies, left me feeling a bad aftertaste. I'd almost DNF this but ended up FFing toward the ending - 1.5 stars rounded up to 2.
This was super fun. For Max’s first Dark Romance I really enjoyed it. I just wish there was a bit more to the case side of things instead of just the romance side of things. Personally. I did love Theo and Jace together. I also loved seeing the other Detectives as well!
I really struggled to finish this book. It was definitely steaming but I couldn’t get into it for some reason. I think Max Walker is a great author and I underestimated how dark this book would get. If you like dark romance, you would like this. Unfortunately, it was too dark for me.
This is my first time reading Max Walker, and I’m happy to say I’ve found a new favorite gay author! Edge of Control is a dynamic, well-written thriller that doesn’t shy away from explicit, steamy sex scenes—each one as intense as the conflict at its core.
The story follows Jace Holloway, a detective at Stonewall Investigations-NYC, on the hunt for a serial killer known as Nevermore, whose signature is leaving black feathers embedded in his victims. Surprisingly, we learn from the start that Nevermore is a man by the name of Theo Glass, who has been secretly punishing a sinister blackmail ring in revenge for driving his dear little sister to suicide—pulling him deeper into a deadly game. The two men become entangled in a dark relationship with raw and electric chemistry, and as obsession and desire intertwine, the line between justice and passion blurs.
As is the case in many romance novels, this narrative shifts chapter to chapter between Jace’s and Theo’s perspectives. This clichéd alternating POV structure reduces some of the suspense since it reveals the whole time what’s in both characters' heads. The novel would have been much stronger told only from Jace’s perspective, leaving Theo’s motives and troubled mindset a gradually-exposed mystery until a big reveal (since he's the character's LI, we would reasonably suspect he's got a valid motive for his crimes, we would just need to keep reading to find out what is it, and-more importantly-if Jace would be okay with it). Therefore, I would categorize this novel as a dark romance with elements of thriller and suspense rather than the opposite.
The plot is engaging and easy to follow, though a bit thin. It slows down considerably toward the middle, but Walker manages to drag it out of the mud before the end. And though there are no big surprises, that has the advantage of ensuring nothing feels “pulled out of thin air” at the last minute either. In the end, Edge of Control isn’t literary fiction, and it doesn’t pretend to be—it’s just an entertaining read for a gay audience that enjoys a dark romance with a heavy dose of crime and heat. So, if you love obsessive, morally gray men and high-stakes tension, this book delivers.
I’ll definitely be diving into Max Walker’s fantasy novels next—he seems to be a reliable writer with a distinct voice. For now, I highly recommend this book!
“This was twisted. This was toxic. This was what I wanted.”
I love a dark romance with obsessed men, and Max Walker delivers in Edge of Control with a story that is as emotionally charged as it is spine-tingling.
Edge Of Control centers on Jace, a determined detective investigating a serial killer, Theo. At first glance, Theo is a cold and ruthless killer bent on avenging the death of his sister. But as the story unfolds, we discover that Theo’s obsession with Jace isn’t just about the case—it’s deeply personal. Their twisted connection evolves from stalking to a volatile attraction, where both characters find themselves unexpectedly vulnerable in ways they never anticipated. The interplay between Jace’s role as the investigator and Theo’s pursuit of revenge is complicated by their shared struggles with mental health and trauma, making their relationship both toxic and intoxicating.
While Theo is initially presented as a villain, Walker masterfully humanizes him, revealing a man driven by love, loss, and crippling anxiety from a traumatic childhood with an abusive father. This emotional depth flips the typical serial killer narrative, showing that Theo is far more complex than a heartless monster. The twists and turns in the plot kept me on the edge of my seat, constantly rethinking who the real villain is in this high-stakes game. The chemistry between Jace and Theo is explosive, filled with moments of high heat and charged tension, making them feel inevitable.
Edge Of Control is a dark, raw, and captivating ride for fans of romantic suspense and psychological depth. Max Walker has created a story that’s as much about the fragility of the human heart as it is about obsession, revenge, and the dangerous pull of fate. If you’re looking for a dark romance that is layered, intense, and impossible to put down, this one’s for you.
Jace Holloway is a new detective at Stonewall Investigations and is determined to crack his first murder case on his own. Little does he realise that he is being being quickly dragged into the dark world of enigmatic Theo Glass. The two meet by chance when Jace is saved by Theo, from being knocked down and the pair immediately feel drawn to each other.
Was it really by chance though, or is Theo stalking Jace and for what reason? The two meet again for a very steamy encounter in a bath house and Jace is smitten, but was it really by chance or has Theo got stalking as one of his very dark secrets? Jace doesn't immediately suspect Theo as his mind is totally focused on finding the killer known as Nevermore and the link between his victims. One by one things start to fall into place, but by this time Jace is too deeply involved with Theo and vise versa and the pair have some very difficult decisions to make, especially Jace. Even though the reader knows the identity of the killer from the start, there are many plot twists along the way and especially at the end.
I really enjoyed this dark, twisted version of a Stonewall Investigations and would really love to see an epilogue of some kind where we see how Jace is managing to carry on as a detective, having Theo in his life permanently and living with their secret. Hopefully they may be mentioned in some future book. Readers with triggers, definitely need to read the warnings before purchasing, as some very dark themes are covered. Well done to Max Walker for bringing us a very different murder mystery, Stonewall Investigations book! I'm looking forward to the next one.
This was my first read by M(ax) Walker and I can’t wait to deepdive into his backlist. When I read the description for Edge of Control, I was immediately intrigued by the premise. An investigator who falls for the very serial killer he’s hunting. But the story is far from simple and each chapter revealed new thrills. As with real life, Theo is a complicated character who is neither wholly good nor bad. As we peel back the onions each of these characters were, I not only fell more in love with them and this story, I was also pulled deeper into my need for them to somehow get their HEA. At times it seems impossible that things will work out, but I kept faith and Max did not disappoint. I am now fully invested in this series and will be waiting on the edge of my seat for the next release.
This story was steamy, and the chemistry between the characters is hot enough to melt the pages. But it is also a complex and dark thriller with secrets, intrigue, dark pasts, and characters who are good but flawed individuals. I loved how this story kept me on the edge of my seat not for the first kiss, but for that moment when Jace figures out who Theo is. Theo was fascinating. He’s a killer with a strict code and at times, deeply in control of himself and the situation and other times he falls apart. Jace is an investigator with his own darkness. I appreciated Max’s careful representation of both character’s mental health and the attention to detail given to represent their experiences. Despite the darkness of the story, I found both characters very relatable. Ultimately, I could not put this story down and was thrilled by the unexpected story I found between the pages.
"Edge of Control" by M. Walker is a taut, fast-paced read that pulled me in from the very first page. With its razor-sharp tension, complex characters, and emotional stakes, it’s a gripping blend of action and vulnerability that refuses to let go.
What I appreciated most was how Walker balances the adrenaline with intimacy. The protagonist isn't just caught in high-stakes danger—they're also wrestling with control, trust, and the raw ache of past wounds. That inner conflict added depth that elevated the story beyond a standard romantic suspense.
The chemistry? Electric. The tension? Palpable. I found myself rooting for the characters not just to survive, but to heal. There are a few predictable beats, and I wished for a bit more exploration of certain backstory threads, but overall, it delivered what I came for and more.
This book sits right on the line between danger and desire, and if you enjoy romantic suspense with grit, depth, and a strong emotional arc, Edge of Control will satisfy.
Looking forward to diving into the next one in the series!
This was giving The Mindf*ck Series but make it gay. I was actually more interested in the plot of this story than I was the romance. The romance was a little lackluster for me. And some of the bedroom lingo was not my taste.
“I poured buckets of come down his throat.” -that was Theo in reference to some other dude he hooked up with in the past. I really didn’t need to know that.
“Pumping and dumping” was mentioned several times as well as a “painting my guts.”
None of these things are really a problem, they just gave me a little ick.
The only other issue I had was that these men were not believable serial killers. Not Theo or Leo. Maybe Gio was though. And yes, there are three of them with nearly the same name so make sure you remember who is who.
Anyway, the bathhouse scenes were fun. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in one of those establishments, sounds like a wild time.
This is a suspense romance, featuring Theo Glass and Jace Holloway, and is a book one in the Stonewall Investigations: Midnight series.
This one is the first murder mysteries where you know who the serial killer is. This is about revenge for the death of Theo’s sister but there is a great twist in it.
I kind of loved Theo’s stalking of Jace, he was so nonchalant about it and how their relationship develops.
I won’t say anything else about it as I don’t want to ruin the story. It was a great read, I love Max Walker’s suspense books, can’t wait for book two.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 1 in series MM romance Investigator x serial killer Hurt / Comfort Stalking Bath house encounter Obsessed Mental health themes Revenge plan Falling for the enemy Secrets come out Mystery Redemption HEA
Wow!!! I loved this story so much and I found myself compulsively reading it late into the night be-cause I needed to find out if Theo would be caught and would Jace turn him in he realized that he was the Nevermore murderer. I have read other books with serial killers as one of the main characters but I really grew to like Theo once I realized that he was avenging his sister's death and I loved Jace and really identified with his fears about not being good enough for his job. They were explosive together and the sex was so involving and arousing and I loved both of them and wanted Theo to succeed once you realized that his monster father was involved. The climatic scene where Jace had been kidnapped by Theo's dad as the final sadistic way to hurt Theo was frightening and I loved how it was resolved and Theo was freed from his past and they could be together.
I had a hard time getting into this book. During the first half, I almost DNF'd several times.
There was something that just didn't work for me. I couldn't see the chemistry between the main character at first. It got better when they connected emotionally, but I had no idea why they were so into each other.
I feel that Jace's feelings for Theo weren't properly showed either. We mostly see Theo obsessing over Jace, so it gave the impression that one MC loved the other more, and I didn't like that. The ending was rushed too, which didn't help.
This story isn't bad at all. I liked Theo and his conversations with Jace about their pasts. But it could have been much better.

The story follows Theo (Rodriguez) Glass, who lost his sister because of her research into a blackmail ring called Pressure Point. From that day forth, Theo vows to have vengeance for his sister. His plan, to climb the ranks and destroy Pressure Point from the inside out by any means necessary. The cop on the case is newly hired, Jace Halloway. He's been given two murders who have 2 things in common: the black raven feathers, and the cryptic Edgar Allen Poe notes left behind. He is soon on the hunt for a serial killer the public has named "Nevermore". While Jace works on the case, he has no idea that the hot guy he hooked up with actually knows exactly who he is and has been stalking him and keeping an eye on him the whole time. The 2 gravitate toward one another until they are both in too deep.
This book needs more hype! I was definitely not expecting this one to be a 5* read going in. I was a big fan of Take Me Apart from the Vitale Brothers series and when I saw Cop/Serial Killer, I was super excited to give it a try. This book gets you into it RIGHT from the beginning. Definitely check your trigger warnings before going in, there are some dark and heavy themes throughout. Theo has clinical anxiety, panic attacks, and self-harm that Jace eventually helps him through. I love that the characters in this book had so much depth and development. They were complex and flawed. The conflict felt real the suspense over when Jace was going to find out plus the mystery of what was going on with Pressure Point was really compelling. This one is SO worth the read!! Definitely want to read more by this author!
So spicy so yum!!! Lol But yeah of course I love how freaking spicy this is. But then, when it comes to the character's morals especially Theo I mean im not really shocked he's killing. It just makes me kinda sad w Jace's reaction to everything. Because as I always remember on one book I have read, theres this line that states , "There's a difference between justice and law. And sometimes, justice had to step outside the law." So, the thing is, as long as Theo is killing bad people im so okay w it. I wouldnt even blink an eye or have doubts , but the thing is, the readers have Theo's POV meanwhile Jace doesnt so kinda understandable too why hes reacted like that... oh well, im actually hoping for a verse moment of theirs but ok. Anything is good coz its still hot. Mwehehehe
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is a quick and engaging read, with a fluid writing style and endearing characters. The tension between moral duty and emotional connection is introduced well, but I felt it was resolved too quickly, leaving the emotional impact somewhat underdeveloped.
I would have liked to see a deeper exploration of the characters’ inner conflicts, especially when faced with serious decisions. Additionally, the fact that one of the protagonists isn’t truly held accountable for their actions — even if those actions seem justified — was a bit disappointing. It took away from the story’s realism and moral weight, in my opinion.
That said, it’s still an enjoyable read with good potential, especially if the sequel dives deeper into these themes.
im giving it 3 stars because at the end of it all i certainly didn't not enjoy the experience
the thing about the plot is that our serial killer experiences ~insta love~ in a very in-your-face way. he fucks the guy once and it's like their souls had been sewn together. like, dude, calm down, you just had good sex
so you gotta get over that as you read
the smut was hot, i have to admit
and it is kinda interesting, thinking when (or whether) Jace will realize Theo is the killed he'd been searching for, which is why it's kinda sad that it is not Jace's detective work that pushes him towards that conclusion, but rather an unfortunate series of events (no spoilers)
Jace is a private detective and working on a case that involves the Nevermore serial killer.
Theo is said serial killer but he’s very morally grey. After stalking Jace and having a “meet cute” they get to know each other and neither of them can deny the intensity of their connection!
I enjoyed this book. It wasn’t too dark and the premise was so interesting! I loved Theo and all his crazy! And poor Jace who, had to question his morality😂
This was my first book by the author and now I’ll be on the lookout for Benji’s story!
When I read a book I never think a book as soft or weak. Hard or Strong! But this time when I decided what to put for my Headline on this review, Strong was the first word that popped into it. The characters, Theo and Jace are strong, the plot is strong, the story is strong. Was it great, yes. Was it full of excitement, yes. Was there smut, lol, yes. There was also sadness, happiness, regret, resentment, and so much more. M. Walker did an excellent job. This is a 5 star ⭐️ book. *Always be mindful of the Trigger Warnings. 💜
This was a highly entertaining read. A detective and the very person he is pursuing should not work, but Theo and Jace somehow do. Their magnetism is electric, their relationship is all kinds of twisted and toxic, and yet, they’re completely adorable together. Theo is insanely cute and is masterfully developed into a character with emotional depth and complexity. His story is dark and raw, and like Jace, I was utterly captivated. This is an excellent read for fans of psychological suspense and dark MM romance!
Jace a Stonewall Investigator and Theo a marketing director meet after Theo saves Jaces life followed by a hot n steamy encounter at a bathhouse Neither men can get the other off their minds but one is hiding a massive secret.
The book has great twist and turns and it’s also dark so I’d advise you to read the trigger warnings at the beginning.
Great writing again Max, look forward to Benji’s story next.
I'm a little confused. I seem to remember a story very similar that I read some time ago, where the PI/cop falls in love with the suspect / murderer. Also confusing was why Jace was investigating the murders and not the NYPD. He was a PI i believe not a policeman. I enjoyed the story and could tell it would end as it did but I am wondering why when it was said that there was another level about Theo's dad, everybody seemed to say and believe it all ended with Theo's dad's death.
Oh, I love this new darker side of M. Walker. This was a great book filled with stalking, killing and revenge for a good reason( come on it's fiction romance) and so much hurt/comfort. I love this version of Stonewall Investigations, loved these two men, broken because of what family does to its children consciously or unconsciously. And the sex scenes were just that and very very 🔥🔥🔥. Next is Benji's story and I am there.
