Really enjoyed this collection, will be getting the other years too. I like the variety one story per writer, and would try some of their other work / novels in development.
Interesting to get a flavour of what’s the current ‘fashion’ of short story published by the east London shop. Across the 12 stories are:
- 3 lesbian couples - 3 allusions to people turning into birds - At least 2 sexual encounters with non human entities - At least 4 oxbridge grads - At least 2 East Asian social inheritance stories - At least 3 stories highly centred on food - Only one story with real technical weakness - 2 rundown seaside towns
If you like surreal fiction, if you like Sayaka Murata, you will like the stories that come from the community of the Brick Lane Bookshop. I'm amazed that each story was written by a stranger, yet the book all together carries one voice. I would love to return to the store one day to get another collection in person.
Got these because I wanted a way to explore the contemporary short story form, finished it with my mind entirely blown and my heart sold on short stories. Conway's and Devan's stories particularly stood out
