'My life's changed a lot since This Country came out. Among all the amazing times there have been some stranger ones: the time a man climbed the wall into my garden and curled one out on the lawn while staring me dead in the eyes. Or that time I was visited by a pair of legs running around my bedroom as I watched Paw Patrol with my son. And I will never ever forget joining a coven, regressing to a past life, and attempting to have sex with a ghost.
I know that talking about this stuff still feels very taboo. If you say you are a believer in certain circles it's like announcing to a meeting of the Women's Institute that you masturbate. Or dropping the C-bomb in front of a parish priest. But for as long as I can remember I've been fascinated by the unexplained.
I've explored haunted houses, interrogated experts who claim they can communicate with the other side, and investigated paganism, which turned out to be a front for swinging.
Daisy May Cooper, BAFTA-winning actress, has always been intrigued by the paranormal and unexplained. Convinced many of us share this fascination, she went to social media and asked others to reveal their stories.
I answered.
During childhood, I often heard touch-typing coming from the computer downstairs – when nobody was there – always during the early hours of the morning. The rest of the family soon admitted hearing it too. Things escalated. We never solved the mystery. Only years later did I feel comfortable sharing the story – a tale which fascinated Daisy.
“Children are highly receptive to spirits. They see and feel them at times when no one else can.”
My signed hardcover sat on the shelf for six months before I decided to read it. What if I didn’t like it? After all – I was in it. Awkward. But I took the plunge and started reading on a dark, stormy autumn night. I was laughing by page two.
“The witch on the broomstick looked constipated, but we didn’t care. We placed her in the front window.”
Daisy’s passion for the subject comes through in her writing. It’s impossible not to hear this in her voice. The book has a campfire feel, with Daisy as host and others sharing their own experiences. It’s fast-paced and reads like a comedic version of Fortean Times gone rogue.
I enjoyed learning about Daisy’s haunted house and investigations to discover the truth behind it – from Roman soldiers to disembodied legs, she had a bit of everything!
“To be honest, I had felt a bit short-changed that I hadn’t been presented with a full ghost, like I hadn’t got my money’s worth.”
Daisy was both touching and funny when talking about the loss of friend and This Country co-star, Michael Sleggs. Occasionally, chapters didn’t always land – ghosts of Christmas past and what gives her ‘the ick’ – but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment.
Her enthusiasm sent me down rabbit holes, delving into subjects like time slips, pet psychics, near death experiences and past lives. It will be hard to forget Daisy's attempts at seducing a ghost, or Spooky Juice, Sandown Clown and Isle of Wight dinosaur.
Besides making us smile, the book is a reminder to spend less time on our phones and be more present in the world - never know what you might see.
“Getting to the bottom of my own ghostly experiences has felt like a Sherlock Holmes detective story with twists and turns, surprises and dead ends.”
Recommend to those who enjoy their paranormal with a dash of humour. A quick, hilariously creepy read.
Many thanks to Daisy May Cooper and Octopus Books for gifting me a copy.
I pre ordered this book so long ago and couldn’t wait for it to drop through my letterbox today! So much so that I was checking my Amazon delivery constantly!! I gave in in the end and found the audio on Spotify and OMG am I glad I did 😂 Daisy May reads it herself and I have laughed to the point of a stitch countless times!! The book arrived once I was half way through so I picked up reading whilst listening those who know me know I bloody love Daisy anyway so I maybe slightly biased but this book was up there as much as the first one and I finished both within one day! Get them both on your TBR pile asap and bump them!!! 🙌🏼
I absolutely love Daisy May and this book did not disappoint. I laughed out loud so many times and loved the spooky stories which at times left me slightly scared when reading the book late at night. If you love the paranormal, this is a great read.
As abit of a skeptic myself, i had no idea what i was expecting in this book. However, the audiobook by Daisy May Copper was brilliant and very funny too. It’s informal and easy to understand, which is very fitting. An anecdote about attempting to have sex with a ghost is just one of the fabulous stories she tells from her personal life and other’s stories. Be warned, Hexy Bitch is rather emotional and heartwarming in places, especially when discussing her friend Slugs. I enjoyed this and feel like it has given me more of an insight into the views of those who believe in the supernatural.
As I am a big fan of Daisy May Cooper, I first read her autobiography and then was lucky enough to receive this latest book for my recent birthday. I am also very interested in research into the paranormal and so this book ticked all the boxes. It is full of strange and spooky tales, told in a wonderfully readable and entertaining way. Daisy May Cooper's humour makes for a great read. Loved it. Hope there's another book in the pipeline.
I find listening and watching @daisymaycooper espeically easy, I find her story telling amazing, and captivating. Even though I too like the paranormal and the skeptics around it, even if that is not up your street I would still recommend Hexy B*tch. I also found it heartwarming at Daisy mentioning her friends Slugs ( for anyone who has watched this country or read Daisy’s other book this will make sense to you) Hexy B*tch had me laughing out loud at parts of it.
4⭐️ I could listen to anything by Daisy May Cooper. I am the biggest skeptic and I don’t enjoy delving into the paranormal but I could listen to any sort of story from Daisy and still love it 🤣 I love her humour and her storytelling is amazing. I’m surprised I enjoyed this tbh because I am not interested in the paranormal at all but I’ve still managed to give this book 4⭐️ purely because of Daisy and her fantastic writing and audio performance 👏🏻
This book is completely bonkers! I thought it would be a sequel to her autobiography (and admittedly didn't read the blurb beforehand) but it's actually about the afterlife, ghosts, near death experiences etc. unsurprisingly, it's really quite funny and definitely made me laugh out loud in parts. A personal highlight was listening to Daisy try and summon a ghost to have sex with her 😂so random, but worth a read for a laugh.
An irreverently funny journey through the paranormal interspersed with some genuinely intriguing and moving personal stories. There are some wonderful tales here and the story of Daisy being interviewed to join a coven had me laughing out loud… sorry about that to all those people on the tube with me. A very entertaining read.
Daft and fun — exactly what I hoped for. I listened to this as an audiobook and would highly recommend it. Daisy May Cooper’s delivery adds an extra layer of humour that makes the whole thing even more enjoyable.
I'm struggling to understand how someone with a reasonable level of success can be so credulous. I'm as interested in paranormal spooky stuff as the next person, but Daisy seems to believe any old shit she comes across.
I fucking love this woman - I just read the entire book in her voice and it made it so much funnier
Adored her on Danny Robbins Uncanny podcast so this did not disappoint - get Daisy May Cooper her own ghost tours I would literally give all my £££ to her to go
