The Obsidian Sisterhood #2

A Tangle of Obsidian

Rate this book
Chasing shadows and saving the world at the age of sixty-nine? Not on her bingo card. Former nun Sister Monica Barrett is the reluctant keeper of a stone that holds immense dark magick. She’d abandon it if she could, but it’s become attached to her—literally—and there are five more like it in the hands of powerful, corrupt Mages determined to control the very fabric of the world. Even if they destroy that world in the process.

Fortunately, Monica’s foes haven’t been able to find the one thing they need to help them tap into the stones’ powers—a mysterious being named Methuselah, who brought the fragments to Earth millennia before.
Unfortunately, neither has Monica.

On her a fractured secret sisterhood, an off-the-clock cop, and a tech-less tech whiz. On the enemy’s? Unlimited financial resources, their own dark magick, and a host of terrifying monsters.

The race to find Methuselah is on—and the entire planet hangs in the balance.

Pen name for author: Linda Poitevin

Lydia M. Hawke is a writer possessed of both a light side and a dark one. On the dark side, she’s the author of the Grigori Legacy, an apocalyptic urban fantasy series featuring a hard-as-nails cop caught up in the war between Heaven and Hell. In her lighter moments, she writes romances (contemporary and suspense) as Linda Poitevin. And when she’s not plotting the world’s downfall or next great love story, she’s a wife, mom, friend, coffee snob, gardener, walker of a Giant Dog, keeper of many pets, and an avid food preserver (you know, just in case that whole Zombie Apocalypse thing really happens)

Well, what can I say? Another great look into the world of Sorcerers, Nuns, and Methuselah. Yep you heard right, kick ass Nuns! And the main character is a 69-year-old Sister Monica, an ex-nun, and some of her sidekicks are Nuns in their 80s. Thank goodness there is hope for us olde phartes!

Her other sidekicks are a police officer and a transsexual named Phoenix.

This book kicked butt. It had it all: fights, misunderstandings, Evil Mages, an alien, and even treachery.

It's too difficult for me to explain what's going on, and if you're interested in this book, I suggest you get the first one so you can follow this one without getting annoyed by not knowing what's happening and why.

This is the second book in this trilogy, and the last book (which I have already pre-ordered) is called "A Confluence of Obsidian (The Obsidian Sisterhood Book 3)" and will be published November 18, 2025.

This was a fast read, and most likely you can be done in a day or a day and a half, depending on how much other stuff you've got going on!

Former nun, Sister Monica, her 3 friends and the the stone that has bonded to her, go on a quest to find Methuselah, a mysterious being. They were told he had been in the custody of the Ursuline nuns in Quebec. They had been resting up from their injuries in a secluded cabin, but when a group of mages show up and then the Goliath, they have to run. They decide to take the train, but they are mysteriously upgraded to business class. Sister Monica is suspicious, but her friends convince her it's fine and so they enjoy the train ride in luxury . . until they don't. There is a mage on board and Sister Monica takes drastic measures to see the train car, the last train car on the train, is evacuated and detached leaving the mage and her behind. This is just the beginning of the heart pounding action she has to face as she makes her way to her goal.
Lots of twists and turns as Monica meets new friends, faces betrayals and learn how to manage the stone so it doesn't destroy her. Another great book in the series. Can't wait to see what happens next. I'd give it ten stars if it let me!

And now we wait patiently for book 3 and to see what happens next. And I always thought nuns were sweet old ladies not monster fighters.

69-year-old Sister Monica, a former nun and former director of a women’s shelter, continues her quest from the first book in this series, A Web of Obsidian. All she needs to do is travel to Quebec City and find a 10,000-year-old entity (deity??) who may (or may not??) be the savior (or destroyer??) of the world who also happens to have Sundowning Syndrome. Her allies consist of her protégé from the shelter, the few remaining (and octogenarian) members of the Obsidian Sisterhood, a Police Officer on leave, and a handful of other well-intentioned souls.

Along the way, they must evade an army of magical beings determined to control the mysterious black stones. And differentiate friends from foes.

If you are looking for a cozy story about lovely old grandmothers sitting around babysitting the grandkids, baking pies, or knitting, look elsewhere. These Crones (reluctantly) have adventures, are totally bad-a$$, and plan to save the world.

I had the opportunity to read an ARC copy; A Tangle of Obsidian will be available for all to read on June 3, 2025.

I am grateful to have received this book for free from the author and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
This is the second book of the series The Obsidian Sisterhood and it is just as fast-paced with adventure and intrigue as Lydia M. Hawke’s first book, A Web of Obsidian. Sister Monica is at it again with her kick a$$ moves with her sidekicks, a young tech savvy whiz from the shelter, members of the Obsidian Sisterhood, and a police officer on leave. They run from and then toward danger, fighting mages and other beings along the way. Their quest--to find the eons-old entity that brought the mysterious black stones to Earth and how to control and survive the obsidian stone that has bonded to the feisty 69 year old, Sister Monica.
I highly recommend this fantasy book, A Tangle of Obsidian and am excitedly waiting for the next book, A Confluence of Obsidian to be released later this year, to see if Sister Monica and her entourage are successful in their quest to save the world from monsters and solve the mystery of the obsidian stones.

If you thought that the Golden Girls should be an action flick and that world-saving is wasted on the very young. If the idea of Nuns kicking a$$ and dropping f-bombs (as well as some literal ones) fills your cold, dead heart with joy... have I got the book for you!

In this sizzling sequel, Sister Monica continues her journey, both inwards and outwards.
Tasked with a piece of obsidian that both heals and destroys, Sister Monica must come to terms with what that means, to her life, her "family," and her outlook.

However, Sister Monica, can't just rest on her 69-year-old laurels, she is also tasked with finding Methuselah, a being of unknown power, who has been missing for almost a year. So Sister Monica and her family travel to visit the Ursilene Nuns who have been tasked with keeping him safe.

This was a jam-packed sequel filled with tough truths and tougher nuns. I enjoyed every minute and can't wait to see where the author takes us next.

I received and Advanced Reader Copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.

A Tangle of Obsidian-by Lydia M. Hawke
Book 2 of The Obsidian Sisterhood series
Another thrill ride with Sister Monica and her companions.
In their search for a centuries old being who may have the answers they seek, they find themselves traveling around France. Sister Monica tries to figure out how the stone works and if she can control it. Just when they are starting to feel somewhat safe, that safety is destroyed. Who is after them? Why does it appear that a creature that they thought was trying to kill them, may be their savior? Why can’t a train ride, just be a nice trip through the countryside, getting them to their destination on a hunt for a fabled sisterhood? Then, when they are finally reunited, all hell breaks loose! Who can they trust?
This masterfully written story, weaves together ancient beliefs with a modern flair. Continue the ride, and see where it goes!
Absolutely love this storyline, characters and the writer.

This is one of those authors I’ve been reading for literal decades, so I am joyous when a new book appears. This is the second book in the series, and it’s also related to another series, and we get to see Monica’s journal to that series. This book mostly picks up where we left off in the previous book with our protagonists hiding from the Mages and the Goliath. This book is a wild ride with Monica questioning her life choices, and boy, some of them are a doozy as she’s come to find out in this one. I can’t say much, but this is a book full of secrets unveiled, unexpected help, and wonderful writing. I just loved this and can’t wait for more to come! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Loved this. I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book. Monica is a 69 year old ex nun who doesn't let her age get in the way. Monica, Talia, Phoenix and Margaret are hiding from mages and a monster, looking for the last few Ursuline Sisters and answers about the stone Monica became connected to in the first book.

Like the previous volume, the action sequences are fast and frenetic, while the thoughtful section are calm, giving the story time to breathe. The characters are beautifully realised, and we meet some new ones along the way that are astonishing; Sister Colette was a particular favourite.

These are definitely not your traditional little old ladies; they are the true aged protectors of us all. I can't wait to see where the tale goes next.

Sister Monica is back and the search for Methuselah is on.
It’s another fantastic, action-packed ride with my favourite ass-kicking nun, Sister Monica. Lydia M. Hawke does not disappoint with book two of the Obsidian Sisterhood. Monica’s search for answers about the stone takes her to new places – Old Quebec City – and introduces her to some new companions. I loved it all. Along with those new companions come some new challenges and unexpected twists for Sister Monica. Will she rise to the occasion, or succumb to the pressure? It’s a wild and harrowing journey, and I loved it all. I’m so excited to see where Sister Monica’s story takes us next.

A Tangle of Obsidian is the second book in the trilogy and it starts off just where the first book ended. Sister Monica is the main character. She along with Talia, Phoenix and Sister Margaret are still on the quest to find Methuselah whom they believe can figure out the Obsidian Stone. The book is well written with well developed characters. Lots of action with a great battle between good and evil. I found it very hard to put down and am looking forward to the third book - there is a great lead in to it at the end of this book.

Taking time to heal and regroup in a hidden cabin in the woods, all seems calm. Quiet until it wasn't when they saw signs of Golliath being in the area and an attack from men they assumed were mages, but something was off. No magic, the men were normal men? Did Goliath actually help them get away? Monica has injuries that are healing almost instantly. Could it be the stone's magic has become a part of her? In an action packed page turner, will they find what they are seeking in Canada and will they be able to avoid the mages and Golliath?

So happy to have received an ARC copy of 0this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading more of this series. Everyone was healing in a quiet cabin when the action starts up again. Follow along as the action takes place and sister Monica finds out more about the stone and about her self in the process. Such great descriptions of the places the action takes place you feel like you are there with her. You really need to read this book and I am so looking forward to the net adventure. Way to go Lydia M. Hawke!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC, and I am happy to write this voluntary review.
This book takes up where the previous one left off. After a brief respite to heal and recoup Sister Monica and her unlikely cohort once again find themselves on the run and battling for their lives. They have to make their way to Quebec and find the remaining members of the Ursuline order. There is much profanity and violence, murder and mayhem, non-stop action and thrills, all in all an entertaining and exciting read. I'm really looking forward to the final book in the trilogy.

She’s back, and Sister Monica doesn’t disappoint in this new story! There are plenty of f@cks as she starts to understand the web’s power, wants, and needs, while trying to protect those she loves (and the plucky sisterhood.) The story moves at lightening speed, and you won’t want to miss a minute of this chapter of the Obsidian Sisterhood! I can’t wait for the next one!

Sister Monica and her ragtag crew are in the thick of it again. She is in a battle with the darkness that is chasing her and a darkness that is coming from within.
She has a foul mouth and a bad attitude, but that's what it takes to keep the innocents she is tasked to protect alive.
You really gotta love a book whose first word is fawk!!
