Emily’s story is about experiencing the worst of all tragedies, the death of a child, and yet coming through that deep loss with a sweet story to tell. And what a story it is. This little book provides a first hand look into the gut-wrenching angst of dealing with a rebellious teen. If you’ve been there yourself, you know how difficult it is to even put those thoughts into words. You do what you can do. You pray, accept counsel, correct course, and pray some more. So many times, the child comes to his or her senses and the cloud of despair is lifted. For others, it’s a longer journey, one step forward, then two steps back. Just when Emily and her husband thought they had made it through the worst, their son made a decision to be at a party where the group’s reckless behavior led to his sudden death.

Emily does an incredible job of sharing the ensuing dark night of her soul, while weaving bright threads of hope into the fabric of a beautiful message for you and me. There’s always hope, she reminds us. We can learn to heal in a healthy way, she encourages. God’s plans for us are still coming to pass, and all things continue to work out for the good of those who trust Him.

Whether you’re on the front end of a major struggle, have just come through a difficult season, or feel as though you’re stuck in that dark space between the two, I highly recommend reading this book. Having walked a lonely road with a teenager myself, I found myself thanking God again for the healing that has come and praising Him for the joy I found in Emily’s story.
