Another well written story about women, America's dark history and how they survived. Working to build up what is now known as New Orleans, France decided to send the women they deemed unworthy to the new world. Shackled they were all put into the dark depths of La Mutine with hardly any provisions to survive the twelve week journey. This novel follows four women, the hard journey they had aboard and the unfathomable years they would then endure in this new land. They were met with resistance and yet were told they needed to marry quickly and put any skills to use. Most did find marriage but they also lived hard lives with new diseases, hunger and losing everything once again when a hurricane hit. The land was not well suited for growing many things, and often the men were indecisive in trying to build this city. I especially enjoyed Josianne's story, and she really built herself up from what she had come from. All the women had hardships to overcome and it was interesting how they endured all they did, considering how they were treated and what they were all put through. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about these women and New Orlean's history and am really looking forward to the second book! Interesting history on what we now know as Louisiana, beginning in 1719. The story of determined and very hard-working men and women who settled the territory while under French control. An enjoyable read.

This is a well researched, character driven novel. The author pulls you in to the hearts of these courageous women. A must read!
