Layla and Costi are finally paired as spell caster and guardian—but their discovery about the secret of Layla’s magic leaves them reeling, drawn closer even as the witches of the Mountain Circle try to keep them apart.
Now Layla is faced with a terrible truth—to fight in the ancient war against the angels means keeping Costi at her side, but never as more than a friend and comrade. And leaving the fight behind to be together… may no longer be an option.
A brewing storm.
The threat of an attack still looms over the Circle, and the witches demand an answer to the obvious question—why haven’t the angels come for them yet?
But as the fractures in the Arcaenum council deepen, pitting allies against each other, it becomes clear that the angels aren't the only enemy.
Tasked with holding the last line of defense keeping the angels from both the Circle and the outside world, Layla and Costi must prepare for battle... and somehow keep their hands off each other in the process.

Tropes: 🌙 Witches & demons vs. evil angels ✨ Paranormal romance 🌙 He fell first ✨ Friends to lovers 🌙 Keep ypur hands off her ✨ Epic conflict 🌙 OMG they were roommates
Tamsin, you’ve done it again! I was so thrilled to dive back into the magical world of Layla and Costi, but I devoured the book so quickly that I already miss them.
In the second installment of her Spell Caster’s Familiar trilogy, Layla and Costi are finally bonded as caster and guardian, but their challenges are far from over. The looming threat of the angels remains ever-present, and Layla’s magic is still untamed, adding another layer of urgency and danger to their journey.
The tension, suspense, and sizzling chemistry between Costi and Layla had me utterly captivated. More than once, I found myself trapped in the “just one more chapter” cycle, only to wake up with far too little sleep. And the angels? Let’s just say I’ve grown to *really* hate them—not just for their relentless attacks on the Circles but for the way they keep disrupting certain… moments between Layla and Costi.
From the very first chapter, Tamsin had me hooked all over again. Now, I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on the third and final book!
Quotes:
“Ah, it’s a sad day when Costi Blackthorn is advocating for diplomacy over fists.”
“I’ll be whatever they force me to be. But you gotta understand… I’m yours.”
I expelled a laugh. “You’re a demon magne*t*, temptress.”
The moment I got my Demon Familiar ARC copy, I stopped what I was doing and dove straight into reading. I was so happy and excited to be back in this world, back to Costi and Layla, and to experience all the good and bad that accompany them.
If you love stories about witches, fighting against societal hierarchy, deconstructing pre-learned myths and history, intrigue and plot twists, and beings from other worlds, you will love Tamsin Hawthorn's Inperium War series. You will devour this series if you enjoy tropes such as forbidden love, best friends to lovers, and found family.
Honestly, I loved The Spell Caster, Book 1. It has the slowest of slow-burns, but it is so worth it. The friendship and the love growing between the two main characters are so pure and beautiful to witness throughout the book. And honestly, I wasn't sure if it could be topped. Oh, how wrong I was because The Demon Familiar surpassed all my expectations and then some. The Demon Familiar rocked my world with its rollercoaster of emotions and actions. It was everything I wanted and needed and more.
Costi and Layla are a force to be reckoned with. I loved seeing Layla grow and find her inner voice and strength. She was glorious in her quest for a better and fairer society, glorious in her need to uncover secrets and hidden mysteries, and glorious in her need to protect Costi and the feelings they share. And Costi...He was just as glorious. He has cemented himself as one of my favourite MMCs. His drive and fierceness, his love and devotion, and his primal need to protect Layla are just otherworldly.
There was much going on in The Demon Familiar, and I had to force myself to stop reading and start adulting. I never wanted the story to end; I wanted to bask myself in its perfect mixture of action-packed plot and sizzling chemistry between Costi and Layla. I wanted to know all the secrets, learn everything, and uncover everything. I know Tamsin is preparing something truly magnificent in the next book, and I am here for it. The Demon Familiar will be released on February 26th, giving you plenty of time to dive into this fantasy world set in modern times filled with witches, demon familiars, angels, and an exciting and gripping plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I really loved book 1 and couldn’t wait to dive into this one—and it did not disappoint! Costi was as smug as ever, and hats off to Layla for her infinite patience with the Councillors.
I’ll admit, I forgot who was who since I didn’t get a chance to reread book 1, but that slow burn? So worth it!!! My heart physically hurt for Layla and Costi, and I was terrified to read further near the end.
Now, I need book 3 ASAP!!! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—if you love paranormal books with witches, demons, and angels, you have to check this series out!
I love that each instalment of this series is short and action packed, it’s an easy and exciting read. This one ended on a cliff hanger unfortunately but I’m keen to read the next one.
If The Spell Caster laid the foundation, The Demon Familiar built a towering structure on top of it. This sequel takes everything that worked in book one, the magic, secrets, and a compelling dynamic between Layla and Costi... and dials it up.
Layla truly comes into her own here. Now officially paired with her guardian (aka her longtime best friend), she’s forced to deal with not only the truth of his identity but also the implications of her own magic. What I loved most about her arc is that she owns her power in this book. She’s more confident, more in control, and it makes the story all the stronger.
Then there’s Costi. If book one hinted at his potential, this one throws him center stage. His journey of self-discovery and his evolving role felt so well earned. Watching him navigate his new reality along with Layla made their dynamic even more compelling. There’s tension, camaraderie, and a real sense that they’re on the edge of something bigger.
The pacing was perfect. Picking up right where the last book left off, it never lets go. There are some intense, nail-biting moments, but also quiet ones that add depth to the world and characters. There’s so much to explore here, and I wouldn’t be mad if we got spin-offs or alternate timeline stories to expand it even further.
Overall, The Demon Familiar is exactly what I wanted from this sequel and more. Stronger character arcs, a richer world, and a story that keeps you hooked. Highly recommend!
Yet again, she’s done it. Tamsin has pulled me in to this incredibly unique world and I have been left staring at the ceiling and wishing for more.
Book two picks up right where we left off, and things take an even darker turn for Layla and Costi as we start to get clued in on that cliffhanger at the end of book one.
The world and magic system are excellently done, and I’m obsessed with this unique take on angels, demons and witches. The political scheming, the myth and lore building, the character development, all are just *chefs kiss* I love seeing Layla come out of her shell and starting to put her foot down.
You know you’ve read a great book when you’re actually shouting at your kindle because CERTAIN characters get under your skin so much. When you know you’ll know, but let’s just say I am eagerly awaiting Costi cleaning the floor with those INSUFFERABLE wet wipes 😂
I read this in one sitting pretty much as soon as I received my ARC. I love how the story picks up right where book 1 left off. Pacing is a strong suit as it reads quickly.
I think the FMC has more depth which I am appreciative of but I definitely still wanted more back story and growth for the MMC and more with Laya and casting. I'm excited for book 3 to hopefully get more from these two and their relationship.
There is a a lot of action and tender down time. I would definitely recommend this story/series to anyone who enjoys stories with witches, slow burn, and friends to lovers.
When I received my ARC copy of The Demon Familiar, I immediately stopped everything I was doing and dove in. The excitement of returning to this world, of reconnecting with Costi and Layla, was overwhelming. I was so happy to be back with these characters, experiencing all the highs and lows they face together.
Costi and Layla have truly become a force to be reckoned with. Watching Layla’s growth in this book was nothing short of glorious. She’s more confident, more determined, and her quest for a fairer society is inspiring. I loved how she uncovered secrets, pursued justice, and fiercely protected Costi, all while uncovering her own strength. And Costi, he’s cemented himself as one of my all-time favorite MMCs. His intensity, devotion, and primal need to protect Layla are simply unforgettable. Their bond is magnetic, and I was so deeply invested in their journey.
The pace of The Demon Familiar was incredibly fast, but honestly, I think that’s because I was so invested in the story. There was never a dull moment—every page kept me on my toes, and I couldn’t get enough. I never wanted it to end. The perfect mix of action-packed plot and sizzling chemistry between Costi and Layla kept me hooked from start to finish. I couldn’t wait to uncover all the twists, secrets, and mysteries this world had to offer. With the next book on the horizon, I’m even more excited to see what Tamsin Hawthorn has in store. She’s truly crafting something spectacular, and I can’t wait to dive in.
As the second book in the Spell Caster’s Familiar trilogy, The Demon Familiar picks up with Layla and Costi navigating their new roles as Spell Caster and Guardian. I especially loved seeing how Layla’s magic progressed, and how she became more confident in her abilities. Watching her relationship with Costi grow was another highlight—their connection is deepening in such a beautiful, natural way, and I loved seeing them evolve together.
The action scenes were another major strength of this book. They were engaging, well-paced, and added so much intensity to the story. I found myself on the edge of my seat during every confrontation, which kept the plot moving forward in the most exciting ways.
If I had to nitpick, there were moments when the dialogue felt a bit awkward or jarring—particularly with some casual phrases like "gonna" or some cursing that didn’t quite fit certain situations. But honestly, that’s a small issue compared to the overall strength of the book, which kept me fully engaged from beginning to end.
I highly recommend The Demon Familiar to anyone who enjoys stories about witches, supernatural beings, and characters fighting against societal norms. If you love slow-burn romance, friends-to-lovers tropes, and a touch of forbidden love, you’ll devour this series. After the emotional rollercoaster that was The Demon Familiar, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
After the surprise reveal at the end of The Spell Caster, I'm so glad that I was able to start The Demon Familiar immediately!
Because of that reveal, Layla and Costi are finally paired together as Spell Caster and guardian, despite others trying to break them apart. As they learn how to actually cast the spells necessary to help in battle, they learn that they are truly much more powerful than any other pair. They also discover many more secrets that are being hidden from the rest of the circle, with the Elder Grey trying to impose something on the witches that they can categorically opposed.
This story picked up right where we left off in The Spell Caster and I loved where it went! Layla and Costi, both learning how to operate as a pair and getting pushed into leadership, both formal and informal. I loved how Costi was able to show off his skills as a guardian and potentially a future leader by training Layla's coven how to defend themselves and work more on the offensive. Unfortunately, Costi's childhood before he came to Layla remains a bit of a mystery, and he was not able to get any real answers about this. And the slow burn finally ignites!! Layla and Costi finally fully admit their feelings and get together, albeit secretly. This sadly is the impetus to so many more rules and regulations for the spell casters and witches. We also see that this time together does uncover Costi's true face, which he takes in true Costi fashion, "aggressively daring anyone to say anything about it." He is definitely my favorite, speaking his mind and taking what he wants.
While I loved that this book continued to be short and to the point, sadly I think we lost a bit of the characters being their own people along the way. The amount of characters I was keeping track of grew a LOT in this story, and I couldn't keep up.
But! I loved the continued discovery of secrets, what might be happening to the other circles that have been attacked by angels, and some of the slight political leanings this story had. "They need your obedience. It's what they crave above all else. But they can't get it unless you give it to them."
Definitely check this out if you love a paranormal romance with friends to lovers, witches and demons, epic conflict, forbidden feelings, obsessed MMC, "keep your hands off her", and "it's always been you..."
I received an advanced review copy for free. This review contains my honest opinion and is being left voluntarily.
Thank you to Torch Lit Ink, Moss & Cypress, and Tamsin Hawthorn for an Advanced Reader's Copy of this title!
Layla and Costi have achieved their childhood dream of being paired together as Spell Caster and Guardian, but at what cost? The secret of Layla's magic leaves more questions than answers, and in staying together as witches, they may be forcing themselves apart as...something more. As the Arcanum Council of Witches continues to fracture and news of attacks on sister communities continues to pour in, Costi and Layla - as well as their friends and neighbors - are forced to realize that the angels (who have mysteriously disappeared, by the way) are not the only enemy they're facing. Can Layla and Costi hold the last line of defense, learn more about Layla's magic and its shocking origins, avoid the eyes of those who would separate them permanently, and hold their friendships and their society together - all while keeping their hands off each other?
Another great installment in the Imperium War/Spell Caster's Familiar series that somehow managed to expand on the first novel while also leaving more questions and an even bigger cliffhanger than the last book! The witch commune vibes that I loved in the first book are still here, but the story definitely starts to take a darker turn as our favorite Spell Caster/Guardian pair are faced with even more realities of war; continued pushback from the adults in charge; the slow horror of realizing your communal society is quietly tuning into a dictatorship run by a deranged, mad fool and his yes-men (anyone living in 2025 America can probably relate); the frustration of a man who can't take "no" for an answer; the importance of friendships and the idea that 'what is right' and 'what is easy' are not necessarily the same thing; and the juicy, juicy, delight of forbidden romance (grab life by the horns, kids!). I hope we continue to delve deeper into the witch/demon/angel lore and I have a feeling based on where we ended (completely criminal to leave readers perched on the edge of their seats, by the way) that we'll learn much more about the angel 'monsters' and the demon world in the next book, which I am really excited about!
The Demon Familiar picks up a couple of weeks following The Spell Caster, with Lyla (the strongest Spell Caster of her generation) and Costi finding out there is more to their lifelong friendship than meets the eye; that he is her demon familiar. The first half of this book primarily deals with them figuring out this new development in their relationship while also - finally - dealing with the tension between them. The second half of the book picks up with the main plot from the first book - the Angels attacking the Witch Circles and the power struggle Between Calamus Grey/his father and Lyla. With so much division in the Circle, it's unclear how or if they will be able to work together to defeat their enemy or if they will self-destruct from within.
The Demon Familiar is a strong second book, and I enjoyed it a little more than the first book. The characters feel more well-rounded, which is largely because the first half of the book focuses on Lyla, and Costi, and their relationship. It was fun seeing them interact with very little interference from the Council or Calamus. I especially loved that they were looking into Costi's past and I hope we get more answers and information about his family and life in the Demon World in book three. Hawthorn also did an amazing job of showing how a government takeover happens. In this world, the Witches believe that they will have failed if Inperium comes into play - a hierarchy. Throughout both books you get little snippets of Councilor Grey laying the groundwork to take more power. It is subtle at first and becomes more and more obvious as the story progresses
until you hit the climax of this book and it all becomes very apparent. I love the dialogue Hawthorn included about how this change in government happens and what it means to everyone who is under that government's purview. The dialogue between characters is a little off and is very formal. For characters who are supposed to be in their early 20s and 40s, it just doesn't seem very conversational. This wasn't very noticeable throughout the book, but there was one point where Lyla was talking to a cashier and he was speaking like he was an old English Lord. It's not a big thing but took me out of the story at that moment.
It was all I could do to not drop everything and jump into this book as soon as it arrived in my email! Layla and Costi have been a favourite since I first read The Spell Caster in August 2024. I've been eagerly anticipating this next instalment of The Spell Caster's Familiar ever since! And the dedication at the beginning told me all I needed to know - I'm in the right place.
"For you, the one who won't do what you're told."
The Demon Familiar did not disappoint. The story picks up immediately from The Spell Caster, continuing seamlessly. Layla and Costi are finally bonded as Caster and Familiar, but these things are never without challenges. As they try to figure out their dynamic and how to actually cast spells, they are also battling their growing feelings for one another (despite that the Circle rules dictate that they cannot be together).
Meanwhile, the Angels remain an imminent threat, and the dissent within the Circle is growing to epic proportions, threatening to tear the entire community apart. Calamus continues to be entirely sus and I narrowed my eyes every time he appeared on page. The Circle leadership brushing off the concerns of Laya, Costi, and their friends is really frustrating!
The slowest of slow burns that started in The Spell Caster finally had THE moment, which was beautiful... but resulted in Costi's true form being revealed. IYKYK, but it's not called The Demon Familiar for no reason! Spoiler - he grows horns!
The growth of both of these main characters was very well written. Both Layla and Costi are fiercely protective of one another, even to a detriment of themselves. They are determined to figure out how to cast their spells, as Costi is clearly different from every other demon familiar we've seen so far. I am so invested in figuring out what he truly is and what his and Layla's purpose is for saving the Circle!
I also enjoyed getting to see more of the supporting characters and their own growth. Though everyone still has a long way to go, they are growing together as a group, as well as individually. It is sometimes easy to forget how young they are, but their portrayal is realistic and endearing.
'Costi leaned in. "Fuck around and find out."'
Thank you so so much to Tamsin for the eARC. My opinions are my own.
When the childhood friends finally become lovers, when the FMC becomes a leader and stands up for those who seemingly don’t have a voice, when the MMC gets a SERIOUS upgrade… throw in a dash of long-awaited spice and out pops The Demon Familiar.
This installment picks up where the previous book left off. Layla has her familiar in all the best of ways, but rival casters and the ever-present angel threats never give her a chance to catch her breath. Costi adjusts to his new role in Layla’s life and the pair’s chemistry ignites. Costi learns of his past and what it means for his future. Training with Costi and her coven mates prove fruitful and allows them to finally take a win in a battle. But victory is short lived, another attack comes and the angel’s they thought they knew seek to obliterate their existence. When a new enemy arrives, blindsiding everyone including those thought to be behind the recent attacks, Layla and Costi are forced to make rash decisions.
A breeze to read through, Tamsin Hawthorn’s writing is beautiful, and flows off the page in a way that makes it not only hard to put the book down but to think of anything else once you do. I have never really been a fan of friends to lovers, but it is written so well in this story that you can't help but be smitten with the both of them. I love how protective Costi is of not only Layla but the demon familiars. His care for them proves he isn’t Troubled as they say but a natural leader and protector.
I really enjoyed diving into The Demon Familiar, and being able to continue Layla and Costi’s journey, especially after how book 1 ended!
The strength of their friendship, and watching it develop into something more was amazing. Layla and Costi are a force to be reckoned with, and their magical bond is formidable. Layla’s character growth throughout the book was incredible too. The way in which she handled herself, despite what was thrown at her, and how she did not back down or shy away from uncovering truths was perfect. Costi’s determination, and devotion to Layla and keeping her safe while not holding her back, has me invested in him. While we do learn a little more about his past, I’m hoping to see a little more in book 3.
The pacing in The Demon Familiar is fast, but that’s to be expected given its length. Although it is fast paced, it did not feel rushed or disjointed, and I had no issue keeping up or understanding. It was the perfect length to binge, and then keep you wanting more after finishing. The balance of action-packed scenes with character-driven scenes was written well, and I really enjoy Tamsin’s writing style.
I highly recommend this series if you find yourself loving stories involving witches, paranormal fantasies, friends to lovers, found family, and slow burns. I cannot wait to see what book 3 has in store!
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. This review is my own, honest opinion.
This book picked up right after where book one left of. The forbidden love and their fight continues.. lots of events unravel in this book but I feel there is much more to come. I was so glad I had the second book to read because after book one ended I don’t know if I would have survived waiting and not knowing what came next and let me tell you, the twists that keep coming along never stop and now after I finished book 2 I really really want book 3 😭😭😭😭 the character growth was so beautiful and the new costi makes you fall in love deeper than before. This book has some good action that leaves you breathless. And the end is just something else. I will be anticipating book 3 till it comes out and this book was as amazing as the first and I sure was not able to put this book down and finished it in less than 24 hours and had to sit for a day to be able to pick up a book after 🙈 I miss the characters I want to read more and more of this story. I don’t want to say anything about how the plot goes on in this book because I feel what ever I will say will give some spoilers to the readers and I think it is best you experience this on your own. Happy reading friends.
My favorite quotes
“For you, the one who won’t do what you are told.”
“You got me out. You brought me back.”
“I don’t want to get away from you.”
“I’m not gonna bite you.”
“Am I worth a lifetime of fighting.”
“But I just found out how much I like carrying you around.”
As the war between Witches and Angels rages on, Layla and Costi must navigate their new situation as Spell Caster and Guardian. The Demon familiar is the second book in the Spell Caster’s Familair trilogy.
First and for most, thank you to Tamsin Hawthron and Torchlit Ink for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Rating: 3.75-4 stars ⭐️
After reading the first book, I was so excited to get into the second. I especially was excited for Layla’s progression with her magic.
I really liked Layla and the growth she had in this book. She’s much more confident. I also of course enjoyed her relationship with Costi and how it also grew in this book.
The action scenes were interesting and I enjoyed them a lot. They really kept the plot interesting!
Now this is a bit nitpicky, but the dialogue was why I didn’t rate this book higher. Some times it felt a bit awkward and jarring, especially with the use of cursing or the use of words like “gonna” in some of the situations where it didn’t seem appropriate. Not a big deal though! I still thought the writing was great! I recommend checking this book out if you like supernatural beings, slow burn romance, and slight friends to lovers. ♥️
'This Circle was falling so easily into the exact thing we were sworn to fight, and now we were trapped here. Why should I continue to defend them?'
The Demon Familiar picks up right away from where we left off in The Spell Caster, and I loved that. It felt like I'd never left this world!
I was hoping to reread the Spell Caster before starting this next book, but life got in the way and I didn't get a chance to. Turns out, I didn't need to worry. As soon as I started reading I got into the pace of the book very quickly, and managed to remember most of the story that came before.
I liked Costi and Layla's dynamic shifting in this book, and how their covenmates played a larger part in the story. I did think that some elements of this book were more rushed than in the first book - any battles seemed to be over quite quickly, and I did find that I was struggling to remember who the antagonists were, and why they were so menacing. I would have also liked to have seen a little more tension between Layla and Costi, as this was done so well in the first book.
The Demon Familiar is fast paced, fun and a great paranormal fantasy read. I really recommend if you enjoy books about badass witches and love a good cliffhanger 😉
✨The Demon Familiar ✨ is the second installment in a spellbinding paranormal witchy romantasy series set in a hidden society in the modern world. (You gotta read book 1 before starting this one )
🪄TROPES🪄 🌀 Friends -to-lovers 💫 Slow Burn and Angst 🌀 Forbidden romance 💫 Dual POV 🌀 Touch her and ☠️ 💫 Witches / Demon Familiars/ Angels (not the good ones🙂↔️) 🌀 Found Family
✨I was spell-bound from the very beginning! Loved everything about the book🫶🏻
The main characters are wonderful! I Love the FMC (Layla) who's loving, kind hearted, witty, lill self conscious witch , who is learning to love herself undergo a BEAUTIFUL character development!
Costi ( the MMC ) continues to be my top book BF with his tattoos and his "touch her and ☠️" vibes and all the Cinnamon roll marshmallow cuteness 💕🥹 ( There's so much I wanna tell you about him, but it's super spoilery , so I will just say , YOU NEED TO MEET HIM !!)
Tamsin continues to amaze me with the perfectly paced story, the incredible plot and ❤️🔥The SLOW BURNNN❤️🔥 .. Its pure and unrelenting t0rtureee of the best kind !!! 🤌🏻🤌🏻
Thank you soo much for including us in your ARC team, this book is a masterpiece and I am honoured!! 💜💜
The Demon Familiar picks up right where The Spell Caster left off. The story of Layla, the caster, and Costi, her demon, continues at a relentless pace. Each and every page is filled with action, drama, friendship or love. Sometimes all at once! Absolutely could not put it down. In fact, I put down (*whispers*Onyx Storm) to check out this one and… well, I finished The Demon Familiar! I adore this series in a way that I simply cannot put into words.
Layla and Costi are working through the mystery of their newly “activated” magic. The first book was about Layla finding her familiar (& thereby her magic). Now that Layla and Costi are paired, this book is all about shared connections (magical and otherwise) and honing their skills together. All while navigating political drama and angel attacks.
I adore this authors writing style. It pleases my ADHD brain to have the story move along so quickly. When I’m having a more unfocused day, it can be hard to read. Not the case here! I’m also just as emotionally invested in the MCs and the story as I am with 200+ more pages: what a writing talent!
Thank you, Tamsin for the opportunity to ARC read again! It’s such a pleasure!
3.5 ⭐️ After really enjoying the first book in this series and eagerly awaiting the release of The Demon Familiar, I have to admit, I was left feeling flat.
We return right where the first book ended, with Costi and Luna navigating their new bond as spell caster and demon familiar. However, the first 100 pages felt like a slog—nothing much happened, and the anticipation I once had for their dynamic started to dwindle. The storytelling felt anticlimactic, and I struggled to connect with the characters. Their relationship, which should have been the heart of the story, felt disappointingly surface-level.
We don’t get a deeper dive into their emotional development or the intricacies of the magical bond between them. Additionally, the magic system of the coven and angels, which I was hoping to explore further, felt underdeveloped and lacked the depth I was craving. It just didn’t land for me, and it took me out of the story entirely. While the premise is solid and I still think there’s potential, this sequel didn’t quite live up to the promise of the first book. It left me more frustrated than intrigued, and I found myself struggling to pick it back up.
The Demon Familiar takes everything that made The Spell Caster so compelling—its intricate world, rich magic system, and the slow-burn tension between Layla and Costi—and dials it up. This sequel is an emotional whirlwind, packed with high-stakes battles, forbidden longing, and secrets that could change everything.
Layla truly steps into her power here. She’s stronger, more determined, and finally starting to question the systems that have dictated her life. Costi, on the other hand, is a force of nature—fierce, loyal, and completely devoted to Layla, even when the rules force them apart. Their bond is undeniable, and the will-they-won’t-they tension had me gripping the pages.
Beyond their dynamic, the overarching conflict intensifies, with the looming threat of the angels and the fractures within the Arcaenum council growing deeper. The pacing is relentless, the twists unpredictable, and the stakes higher than ever.
Tamsin Hawthorn has delivered a sequel that doesn’t just match its predecessor—it surpasses it. Now, all I need is book three, because that ending?? I’m not okay.
Another amazing book from this author. I love the fact that this book carries on straight after the last book ends so you don't have to catch up with a time lapse. The characters you loved to hate in the first book make you hate them even more in this one. But then the author has also allowed you to fall in love with the other characters even more. I absolutely love that other characters you wanted to see a bit more have their moments too in this book. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book for varying reasons. I love the way the author creates suspense and and underlying mystery throughout that leaves you needing to know more. Some questions are answered, other questions are still waiting but I love that it isn't all handed to us on a plate in one go. It ends on a jaw dropping cliffhanger and so many new questions that I cannot wait until the next book comes out. I also love how the relationships progress in this story and how much adversity the characters have to face. Highly recommend this book. If you loved the first book, then hold onto your hats because this book will take you on a wild ride but you will love this one too
This series is 100% one of my faves and so special to me! 💕✨️
I'm absolutely feral for costi being feral for layla!!! He 100% gives off "touch her and die" vibes, and that's always a top-tier trope imo!!
Something that I feel isn't talking a ton about in books with a romance plot is the friendships! The friends that our mc's make are absolutely essential to this story. They're loyal, caring, and wholeheartedly would do anything for each other. ❤️🔥
And I'll say this about the war with the angels....THE ANGELS CAN SUCK THE BIGGEST OF D*CKS. like, wtf is your problem, my guy?! Same with a certain MAN CHILD who shall not be named and his lameo father. They're definitely on my list of my favorite characters to HATE ON. 🫠😡
If you're into paranormal romances with broody men who would do anything for the woman they love, friends that stick by your side no matter what, and a thousands of years long war that's bound to blow everything up before it gets better, this series series definitely for you!
Binge worthy action and romance! It can't get better than that!
Angels and demons and magic, oh my! After reading The Spell Caster, book 1 in this paranormal romance series, I couldn't wait to dive straight into The Demon Familiar to continue Costi and Layla's story. So much is at stake and they are struggling to keep their feelings at bay. With the threat of Angels attacking the Circle and the Arcaenum council cracking like thin ice, Layla and Costi along with the other witches, guardians and spell casters must face new and unexpected betrayals, secrets, revelations while trying desperately to survive and win the war with vulnerable alliances. The vibe of this story is dark, gritty and tense. There are a multitude of characters that you will love, hate and have mixed feelings for. Packed full of magic, suspense, demons, angels and witches, you will love this second book in The Inperium War series if you enjoy these tropes and a wicked paranormal fantasy!
So many answers but at the same time sooo many questions! This is the second book in the Spell Casters Familiar series by the lovely @authortamsinhawthorn.
I’m really getting curious about the Angels. I wish there was some more focus on them, but for now I will live with the mysterious creatures that cause so much issue. Something tells me that the demons and angels are working together but that’s my thoughts.
Costi and Layla has easily become my new favourite duo. Layla is slowly working on building her confidence and you got Costi rooting for her. It’s adorable. He is very much the scary dog that ensures no one messes with his caster.
The ending. That really threw me for a loop. My whole theory of what was coming was literally thrown out the window. I’m now wondering who really are the bed guys in this story.
Overall, Tamsin has continued to create a unique take on Demons, Angels and witches. They live in complete secret from mortals, always ensuring there is balance in the world. I can’t wait to read more and see where Costi and Laylas adventure goes!
Very suspenseful, twists that left me speechless and guessing what's going to happen (then being wrong), and I suspect there will be even more twists in the next book. This one also ends on a steep cliff hanger. Throughout the entire book the plot somehow thickened AND cleared up. I love it.
The first book had Layla more expressive, but it seems the author took her trauma and stress into account with that. Still slow burn/forbidden romance but it's sparking a bit more than the first book. 😉
It's also relatable with how things are between Layla and Holly, and I'm glad that wasn't just brushed over.
This would be an excellent read for people who were a fan of other dystopian/fantasy vibed books, Harry Potter, subtle game of thrones, or any series like that without being just another cookie cut story.
**Disclaimer, I did receive this book for a review, however that does not affect my review of the book and this review reflects my genuine thoughts**
The Demon Familiar picks right up after our little cliffhanger from book 1 with Layla and Costi finally being paired and spellcaster and guardian.
Whilst navigating their new "normal," Layla and Costi start to uncover not everything is as it seems in the Mountain Circle. The angels are escalating. They have not enough casters and guardians to fight off large attacks without taking large casualties, and something is very wrong in the Arcaenum. Whispers of Inperium and familiars unable to be invoked. Betrayal and secrets unveiled. Will Layla and Costi come through this? Or will the Mountain Circle fall?
Loved the pace of this book. Layla and Costi the chemistry between them and how kickass they have become. Layla really came into her own in this book and took no prisoners. And Costi "nice horns"
My predictions: Laylas mum is knee-deep in the conspiracies here, and I can't wait for the revelations of book 3.
This is the 2nd book I have read by Tamsin, and I love it just as much as the first!
After beta reading the first book in this series, I was so excited for the second one! unfortunately, due to personal circumstances and hospital visits around the time of release, I was unable to beta read the second one, but I still read it the second it released and wow. I loved it just as much as the first one! Again, due to life being so chaotic then, I completely forgot to leave a review until I did a recent reread!
I loved this series so much! if you haven't already, i highly recommend you pick it up! It's unputdownable and just overall such a well-written and amazing book!
I'm a sucker for a slow burn, and wow, does this series deliver! Mix that with the forbidden romance aspect, and it's perfect!
Layla is such an amazing fmc! I loved watching her grow as a character throughout this series, and seeing her also start to stick up for herself and her beliefs more!
And Costi! Wow!
I really love this series, and the plot twists were amazing! I genuinely never saw them coming, yet afterwards, they made perfect sense!
I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a paranormal, friends to lovers romance with forbidden aspects and a slow burning relationship!
This book is the second in a trilogy that I can not wait to read the rest of!
This book.......this book is just something else. The absolute chemistry between Layla and Costi. I just couldn't get enough. I was legit sad when I realized I was at the last chapter. I was like you said you were still writing it, why can't you and more chapters. I need more, don't take them away from met yet 😭😭😭
But seriously, the story line just gets better from book one to book two. The characters you loved, you love even more. The characters you hated you wanna shove into a void and watch them scream and fall for 30 minutes.
The loving looks between Layla and Costi, the special moments they finally get to share. So heartwarming.
The banter between friends, the bonds being built through hardship and shared trials and tribulations. And when we finally get that scene we've been begging for....it did not disappoint.
* Slow burn * Epic conflict * Forbidden friends to lovers * He falls first * Witches & demons vs. evil angels * Found family
🌟 4/5 🌟
No thoughts, only vibes 🙊 Just kidding, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the second installment of The Inperium Wars series. I loved seeing Layla step into herself more during this book. I also loved Costi and his expected snap backs and his... evolution, shall we say? Literally can't wait for more of that. The plot thickened sooo much in this installment and I cannot wait to see where this all leads to! I loved seeing the magic system in this world as well and look forward to watching that develop both with our witches and in a general sense.
Tamsin has info on her page on how to get your hands on copies of this series if y'all wanna pop on over! ✨ Already have mine pre-ordered hehe.
