Joining a cult is easy, getting out alive is another story.
Two years after the disappearance of sixteen-year-old Amanda Reid, the family’s wealthy matriarch hires Toronto PI Samantha McNamara to find her daughter. Sam hopes that the case will distract her from her sister’s recent murder, but she quickly re¬alizes that things are not as they appear in the secretive Reid family. Someone will do anything to keep her from finding Amanda and exposing the truth.
When her investigation leads to a cult that recruits adolescent girls, she must find a way to unravel the family’s sinister tapestry and outsmart a psychopath. As the storm of the century shuts down emergency services, Sam puts her life on the line to protect the only innocent player in a deadly game.
The betrayal, blame, and lies that twist through this dark thriller will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
L.E. Fraser completed her post-secondary education in Toronto and moved to London, Ontario with her husband, two sons, and three pugs. Raised on military bases, her introduction to unique people and experiences fed a lifelong desire to write. She combines her passion for psychology and criminology in her Perdition Games novels, where the monsters you can’t recognize are more frightening than the ones you can.
Each novel has a unique plotline and features returning protagonists Toronto PI Samantha McNamara and ex-OPP Inspector Reece Hash.
PERDITION GAMES: SIMON SAYS is L.E. Fraser’s debut novel, book 1 in this dark chilling thriller that scrambles the mind in a deadly game of cat and mouse. This is a great start to a new series. It is well written and is sure to please.
The series is broken down as follows: Perdition Games: Simon Says (Book #1) Skully, Perdition Games (Book #2) Red Rover, Perdition Games (Book #3)
I had a chance to read all three books in early January 2017, and this is the first review. Each novel has an exclusive plotline and features protagonists Toronto PI Samantha McNamara and ex-OPP Inspector Reece Hash.
When a rich young girl, Amanda Reid, disappears, her mother Estelle doesn’t care, and reports it long after to the police. Eventually when the case turns cold, Estelle hires private detective Sam McNamara to find her daughter. PI Samantha McNamara soon discovers that Amanda’s disappearance all revolves around a religious cult, led by an extremist, Father Mussani. But Estelle and the Reid family have many secrets and things they want to keep buried.
The POV alternates with the chapters, each allocated to a different character, from a long list. This is definitely not a book that you can skim in any way, but must be attentive to follow the story.
Perdition Games: Simon Says is an excellent debut novel by L.E. Fraser. It is a complex read, which is a compliment. I like books that make me pay attention and inspire me to think. There are lots of characters and several subplots in Simon Says, but thanks to Ms. Fraser's superb writing, I had no problems keeping on top of everyone and everything. Her chapters are divided into subchapters, each headed by a character's name. That subchapter is told from the POV of that person, allowing us into the minds of all the important players. The subchapters were short which contributed to the excellent flow of the book. My interest was maintained throughout, and I enjoyed trying to figure out how everything was going to come together.
Though it is clear the end of the novel sets us up for a second book, this actually didn't upset me. I do not like cliffhangers one bit, and when I run into one, I usually end up not reading the subsequent book. In this instance, I found the ending to be satisfactory, with most of the subplots tied up. Simon Says, therefore, could for the most part be a stand alone. To me, the next book will be more like the second of a series with, from what I understand, one or a few recurring characters, but a differently-angled story. There will, however, be an important tie-in to the first book, so I would not start with the second book before reading Simon Says. I can go with that and plan to read the next book for sure.
L.E. Fraser knows how to write an engaging, captivating novel, and I see a bright future for her. I recommend Perdition Games: Simon Says to all mystery lovers.
This was the first book in the Perdition Games series by Canadian author L.E. Fraser. It was the author's debut work, but you would never guess that. She has since published another two books in this series. I have read one after the other since the beginning of this year and have thoroughly enjoyed all three. This one is about a sixteen-year-old girl who has been missing for two years. Private Investigator, Samantha McNamara, is hired by the family to look into the girl's disappearance. Her investigation leads her to a religious cult in a remote location. There were a lot of characters and different perspectives in this one. But the author handled this with ease and I never felt confused about the who's who and how they were connected. Samantha, the protagonist, who is the recurring character in the follow-ups, isn't actually introduced until some way into the book. Although I am not particularly fond of cult-themed stories, this was a really suspenseful, engaging story. The greatest strength of this book for me were the characters, though. They all felt incredibly real. Considering the sheer amount of characters, I was really impressed by this. I also enjoyed that the Canadian setting was a bit different.
I waited to review this one until after book 2. While this is a series - each story is different (so far). The 2 detectives Samantha (Sam) and Reece are in a developing relationship and work together to solve the mysteries, crimes, etc. they are assigned and/or hired to investigate. I liked this one - but not as much as book 2. While I didn't have to read this one prior to reading book 2 (Skully)), it did help with having quite a bit of background on the characters, etc. 3 stars.
I didn't read the first two books in order, but I enjoyed reading both books very much. They were well written and kept my interest throughout both books. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
L.E. Fraser is the best! The Perdition Games series is incredible! Definitely recommend this book! Highly suspenseful and extremely well written!! Hope there will be a 4th in this series!!!!
Fascinating book, so we'll written. You would never believe that this is the authors first novel. The story is mainly about a cult, a psychopathic leader, and a dysfunctional family. The story and plot kept me interested from the beginning to the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a novel that makes you think.
This is a solid debut for Fraser. The plot, in brief: A frigid matriarch and her henpecked husband live in the Canadian countryside. The couple are well-off, with one daughter who is a successful novelist, and another daughter with a penchant for religious fundamentalism, the latter of whom disappeared a couple of years back.
Enter Detective Sam McNamara, a tough female P.I., who is freshly returned from a headline-grabbing case involving a serial killer called "Incubus." She is hired by the father of the disappeared girl (and she is likewise despised by his wife), and her investigation leads her down a dark path, to a foreboding sanctuary where bodies and secrets are buried in abundance.
This is a deftly plotted novel that kept me reading and guessing until the end. My only gripe (and it's a minor one) is that the cast is a smidgen too large, especially re: a subplot about a suicidal musician. That's an ecumenical complaint, however, and, without giving anything more away, I was excited to discover at the end of the novel that a sequel is almost certainly assured.
I received a SIGNED copy of this book in a competition here on Goodreads a while ago. I took me a while to pick it up because I'm usually not a huge fan of detective novels, but I'm glad I finally did. I was pleasantly surprised.
The book is well written, the plot is intriguing and thrilling and the characters had strong personalities, I highly recommend it. Over all, this was a great read filled with suspense, It's a really good book! :)
Thank you L.E. Fraser for sending me a signed copy!
This book was a huge surprise. I couldn't put it down. Although dark and disturbing in places, it is very thought provoking which came as a surprise since I thought it was just a mystery/thriller. It is more than that and I loved it!
The characters are very well presented. The setting made me feel like I was there. I highly recommend this. I checked out the website and can't wait for the next book that this author has coming.
This book took me by surprise. I loved it. The suspense, drama and thrills kept me glued to the pages. I could not put it down. The storyline was well written. I loved how the story kept getting better with each chapter. The characters were awesome. This book is a great read and a great add to your tbr list. Recommended read.
I gave this book five stars because it was a good read. It was interesting and descriptive giving a glimpse of the life inside a cult. Sam was intuitive and ready to compromise her reputation to try to save a child and his aunt. I loved the characters, especially Reese and Sam.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
Father Mussani ran the Bueton Sanctuary (commune, cult). Brother JB (follower) was his right hand man. Sister Sylvia Blois (28. mentor) & Sister Mandy (16) had escaped from there & were on the run. Sylvia body had been found. The investigation was now closed. Uthisca, Canada. Mrs. Estelle Reid (wife/mother) went to Toronto to visit with Detective Sam McNamara (f, LPI). Sam called Inspector Reece Hash (twin) about the closed missing person case on Amanda Mandy Reid (Estelle/Duncan’s daughter, religious zealot).
Amanda has 2 roommates: Timothy (gay, musician), & Kerry (Tim’s gay partner, artist). They take very good care of Zach Belrose (10, Amanda’s son, deaf, Mary Immaculate Private School for the Deaf). Sam went to interview them & then Mother Mary-Louise. Flashback: Harry Welsh (wealthy) regardless of what Mrs. Betty Welsh (neighbor, University of Guelph) thought; hired Hope Welsh (12, daughter, aka Hideous Hope) to help Dean Crats (38, African American, foreman, Silver Moon Ranch) to take care of the 2 horses Edward (Prince), & Elizabeth ( Abby), & also help clean up the stables. $50 a week, a lot of money for a teen, Jasmine Reid (18, Estelle/Duncan’s daughter, writer/author, aka Jazz Belrose) was also helping out around the ranch. Fast forward; the Canadian Security Intelligence Service or the Ontario Provincial P/D had found no inseminating evidence of wrong doing by the Bueton Sanctuary.
Sam went there anyway. Sister Megan (advisor) was there to greet her. Zach was now missing & an all-out search was looking for him. Constable Letty Sequin even had a search-and-rescue helicopter dispatched in the area. Would Sam get this mysterious case pieced together? Who will be brought to justice?
Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content or profanity &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written crime mystery book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a lot of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime mystery movie, or mini TV series. I enjoyed it but it was hard to follow. That said I will rate it at4/5 stars.

When a wealthy young girl, Amanda Reid, disappears, her mother Estelle seems not to care, only reporting it to the police long after the incident. When the pressure mounts, though, Estelle is forced to hire private detective Sam McNamara to look for Amanda. McNamara soon finds herself immersed, not only in a dangerous religious cult led by a zealot, Father Mussani, but also in the midst of the Reid family’s shady past – a past that Estelle wants to keep buried. Simon Says: Perdition Games by L.E. Fraser is a chilling book that takes us deep into the dark recesses of twisted and tortured minds, unravelling dirty secrets like a kitten playing with a ball of twine. With chapters alternating from the point of view of an astonishing list of characters, it’s easy to get confused, but Fraser does a good job of wrapping up loose ends, making it worth the effort. Colorful settings – although some of the colors are dismal and dreary – and compelling characterizations mark this as a must-read for the summer.
I received Perdition Games: Simon Says free as a first-read. I thought this book was enjoyable but not amazing. The story was intriguing because you could tell there was something “off” with the family from the very beginning with how they weren’t overly concerned that their daughter Amanda was missing. You are also introduced to the cult early on & assume that is where Amanda ran off to but then Amanda’s sister Jasmine is introduced along with her son & you are wondering how all of these characters are connected. It took a little while before I got really into this book. I know the author had a lot of characters to introduce in order to get the story going but I felt like it was going on for far too long before any “action” began that got you really intrigued. I felt like once the story got back to the cult it picked up quite a bit but then was cut short with the ending. I was left wanting to know more about Father Mussani, where did he go? What happened to him? Is he starting another cult? I guess this is great if there is a sequel coming out. I recommend it for a quick read.
OMG! Goodreads no! I wrote a long detailed review and now its gone with a click! -breathe, breathe- Okay, I'll rewrite it.
This was an ARC, a SIGNED ARC. Thanks, L.E. Fraser!
So when i first started this book it took me a chapter to figure out its setting. Its set in present day Canada. And the cover is a bit misleading to me because it seems a bit horror-ish to me. But no, its a detective novel. I really cant stand detective novels.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It took me only 3 sittings to finish. There are quite a few characters. However, they are all distinct so you wont get confused about whom is speaking. And to me, their different sides of the story really pulls you in. This is literally, full of page turning suspense.
The ending sets up for another book. I cant wait to read it.
Heard about this book on Twitter. Don't usually write reviews, but this book deserves one.
It leaves you with a disturbed feeling about the decay of the human condition. It has complicated plotlines but they do tie together and make sense. Yes, the POVs jump around a lot, which could be seen as a technical error, but it was clearly deliberate. If it was through a single POV, the reader couldn't connect with the characters' inner conflict as well. The juxtaposition between the two families may be a bit stereotypical - wholesome country folk versus cold rich folk - but overall the characters were well developed. Although a minor character, I loved Timothy. The subway scene was emotionally wrenching. So was little Hope's stupid decision about the horse.
Great book and I'll probably get the hardcover to add to my library. This author is going somewhere.
I love this book!!! OMG I can hardly believe that it is a debut novel!! Incredible writing and editing!!! The story line was disturbing, exciting, sad...a rollercoaster of emotion really!! I could not put it down...Bravo!!! The complexity of the characters was amazing made me feel like I knew them and although some brought some laughter, others brought tears and still others...well as I said earlier an emotional rollercoaster!! Seriously, toward the end of the book I was reading with a tissue at the ready in hand. This is definitely a must read and I can hardly wait for another novel from L.E. Fraser!! I was given this book to read for my honest review.
This is a debut novel. I am thoroughly impressed! The author introduces us to Sam, a PI who is hired by Estelle Reid to find her daughter, Amanda. Amanda has been missing for over 2 years. Sam is forced to figure out what happened while everyone is hiding information.
I loved the way the author tells us the story from everyone's POV. This style makes me feel like I am a participant not just an observer.
The twists and turns in the tale and the character's personal lives keep you at the edge of your seat.
I love her descriptions of the area involved. The Canadian landscape lends itself well to this type of story.
Hope there are more books by this talented writer!
I received this book for free for an honest review. I am also excited because it is a signed copy!! I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series. This book started out at a full run and kept on going! It is full of drama and mystery. It kept me guessing until the very end. Also, I would have to say it was very original. I read a lot and this topic in itself was different and exciting. It's nice to get out of the same routine topics, characters, and settings . Thank you L.E. Fraser !!!!
I received a free download of this book from Story Cartel, thank you! I really enjoyed this book. It was an interesting look into cult behavior and psychology. I also enjoy books that show how being wealthy doesn't necessarily mean happy. The organization of the story could get a little confusing, with all the different viewpoints, but the author does a good job at labeling each section so that the reader knows which pair of eyes they are reading through. Overall an excellent read, with plenty of mystery and suspense. I would recommend this story to others.
Excellent story and writing. This book drew me in from the beginning. Sam McNamara is a private eye hired by the Reids to find out what happened to their missing daughter. Amanda (Mandy) vanished 2 years ago when she was 16 and hasn't been heard from since. What Sam uncovers is a very disfunctional Reid family and the connection to a religious cult. Sam ends up inserting herself into the cult and what she finds out is horrifying. Well developed, interesting characters. * I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I read this one line, and did it in one day. I have read other books that fast, but not sitting at my computer. It is a thriller, a mystery, first in a series I'm told, filled with a dysfunctional family, a cult, and missing girls. While that doesn't sound all that interesting, surprisingly, it was. I had to see what happened next. It seemed like a slow motion train wreck was being presented and I had to watch where each of the cars landed.
