[Please begin by imagining any one of my many rails against pseudo-incest tropes, then take a shot for the Shojo Manga Reviewer Drinking Game]

Sometimes common sense takes a back seat to the allure of a shiny, brand new, manga, its ‘Volume 1’ just chock full of infinite promise and possibility.

Then you open the cover.

To be fair, ‘have your incest and eat it too’ storylines are rampant in shojo manga, but typically reserved for hopeless rivals. So it’s not quite the same here, but it might be worse.

Sakura gets completely rejected by her crush and it turns out that her utter embarrassment was seen by a guy she doesn’t recognize. She resolves to put it all behind her.

Oh, is she off to meet her new “little brother” she’s never met or seen because in this dimension cameras were apparently only invented last week and also the courtship period between remarrying adults rivals that of the mayfly?

I bet those two preceding paragraphs have no connection to one another.

This is like the warmed up leftovers of better series’ work. Sakura and Kaede get to know one another and bicker then help one another then end up seeing and touching what they shouldn’t. It’s a mess of story tropes wrapped in an unappealing package.

They appear to be setting up the guy who turned Sakura down as the rival and if that happens it will drag this down even further - he is unaccountably mean to her later for no good reason, then waits months to apologize. He is a chump who warrants no further discussion.

Characterization is basically nothing. There’s a large cast but only Sakura’s friend has any traction. Sakura likes to cook. There you go. And Kaede likes to walk around with his shirt off because it’s that type of book and it lets Sakura lose her crap more.

If you want to read a version of this type of story I can actually tolerate, ‘Love Me, Love Me Not’ fits the bill. It also benefits from having a stronger mangaka behind it (art-wise, Kaede’s neck frequently looks like it’s plotting a takeover of his head).

So if you can cope with this particular trope, you might have some hope for this mope and her dope as they fumble and grope (will they try to elope?), but I gave them the rope and in the end I say nope.

Stereotypical “we’re step siblings, so it’s only QUASI-taboo” high school love-drama. MC H hides his feelings behind a calm facade and MC h is an over-reactive idiot. Sadly, I binge-bought the next eight volumes, so will be continuing on. At least they should be quick reads.

3, it gets an extra star in the hope the next volumes get better, stars.

But why though.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, but the way Sakura instantly accepts Kaede as her brother and then is all OMG can't fall in love with my brother is weird. They're teenagers who just met. Why would they automatically fall into sibling roles?

And this could have been fixed by going that she doesn't want to fall in love with him because they live together and it'd be weird if they broke up. That would make perfect sense. But no, she jumps to that's my little brother.

No, he really isn't.

Idiot.

2020 Read #614

This is a very near 2-star read for me, but I did really like the relationship growing between Sakura and Kaede. As a step-sibling relationship series, though, there’s not much new ground tread here.

When I started reading manga, one of the strangest recurring concepts for me was the idea that single parents would get married without introducing their kids to their partner — and their kids, if they had them.

Example: Sakura is looking forward to meeting her new stepfather and little brother. But “little” turns out to mean “a few days younger and physically bigger”. Not only that, it’s the guy who witnessed her being rejected by her crush, Hatano. The two squabble as Sakura protests this new arrangement, and it gets even worse when he accidentally sees her naked. Then her humiliation gets dialed up to another level when Hatano accuses Sakura of being a stalker. Fortunately, Kaede comes and clears the misunderstanding, and it seems like the stepsiblings are finally off on the right foot.

Getting used to having men in the household eventually turns into getting used to having your crush in the household. Not that Sakura is fully ready to admit her feelings by the end of this first volume of We Must Never Fall in Love!, as she first tries to be a good big sister. But between her own natural bad luck and Kaede’s blunt-but-kind personality, Sakura keeps freaking out even over simple gestures like passing a ketchup bottle…which usually leads to even more embarrassing incidents that start the whole loop over again.

So Sakura is often hapless here, and author Tsukishima does force Sakura to be an incredible ditz at times (forgetting she’s been in the bath for two hours and then fainting right in the middle of a conversation). Regarding Kaede, it’s at least somewhat understandable regarding her panic; she’s living with two male strangers now who have their own habits and preferences. Kaede, for instance, likes to be shirtless at home. But still, things like Sakura asking a male classmate to pose for shirtless pictures at her house because she’s too awkward to fulfill her friend’s request for a pic of Kaede? Even though Mori had no problem with this, this goes beyond innocent maiden territory into bizarre.

Kaede sees less of an issue suddenly having a sister, and he finds her reactions interesting. After seeing how, quote, “self-destructive” she is, Kaede thinks of himself as his sister’s keeper. But some of his behaviors are less like a brother or friend and more like someone romantically interested in Sakura. He steers her away from Hatano at school, and he ups the act when they both accidentally end up on the same group date. Readers can see Kaede shaken at times in his own way, and I think a lot of readers will like him. He doesn’t quite fall into the mischievous category nor the super sweet, but he’s a good mix of the two. He pairs well with Sakura, especially with their shared interest in cooking.

The manga has some of the usual exaggerated and/or coincidental situations (the whole stepsibling thing), but there’s still a down-to-earth atmosphere about it. It reminds me a little of Waiting for Spring in that way. Art-wise, though, it’s closer to something like Atsumori-kun’s Bride-to-Be. They’re all Dessert manga like many of Kodansha Comics’ other shoujo offerings, so it’s a natural fit to their lineup.

The next volume promises to include more of Hatano, who regrets rushing to judgment about Sakura. While Sakura is not moping around anymore, Kaede doesn’t want to see her hurt again. Stepsibling romances aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, so Sakura and Kaede’s story will not be of interest to all manga readers. But for those willing to give We Must Never Fall in Love! a try, this is one romance to keep an eye on.

3.5 stars. I love the art. The heroine is ridiculous, but kind. I'm all for step-sibling romances when they meet as teenagers or older. So much of this is just a cacophony of events as the story tumbles down the stairs, but I enjoy watching this mess. It could easily turn with a couple of things that happened where my warning system was alerted, but the line hasn't been tripped over, yet to hinder my enjoyment.

This was atrocious. It's because of that kind of shôjo mangas (=romantic mangas basically) that shôjo manga are so much looked down upon as shallow, cringy and stupid. All shôjo mangas are not like that (write to me in the comments or go to my "favorite mangas" shelf if you want recommendations), but this one certainly was.
The characters had NO PERSONALITY and we were so abnoxiously stupid and cliché I wanted to slap them.
There was no plot, just a series of atrociously done clichés.
The relationship of the main couple could be summarize as : for the girl "I saw him half naked and he screams at me but not all the time so I love him", for the boy "I saw her naked and she's only stupid half the time so I love her". Yes, that's romantic... (I hope you can feel the sarcasm)
And let's not even talk about how wrong and disgusting the relationship was in the first place (and the author makes it even more cringy by making her characters actually remind us readers they're brother and sister by mariage every two pages)
This was sooooo bad. Please don't read it.

Well, this is certainly interesting...

Hmm, forbidden love... such a touchy subject. Since this is fiction, there aren't the real-life ramifications that such a thing involves. This kind of reminds me of Citrus, in that they are suddenly step-siblings, only here, one is a boy. And there hasn't been any kissing. Yet. LOL. Who knows, I guess we will have to wait & see. If the mangaka does this story the right way, this could really have potential to be huge. Maybe not as huge as Citrus, but still... the creator has laid down quite a fascinating foundation to this supposed tale of love. Let's hope we aren't let down in future volumes!

It was a very nice manga, I loved the drawings. I also liked the funny situations happening throughout the whole volume ! It's pretty much cliché and classic as it is but it's still a very good high school story that reads quickly and is funny, so it's nice.

However I do really reaaaally hope the whole forbidden love with step siblings will be developed in a good way and won't go towards the taboo side, there's hope to make it a fun love story but still not go towards the wrong and forbidden thing. So I'll read next volume in hope it'll go on the way I want to :)

Note: I do not mind Step brother/sister troupe in shoujo especially if they didn't grow up together.

This is a lot romantic troupes that are slightly sexual between two new step siblings that constantly remind us they want to be good siblings to each other with a side of touching that feels crazy.

I liked it but I did like the other series better this author better for now but this was enjoyable. I will check more out from the library.

Hi! Welcome to the world of manga tropes, please shelve any expectations of reality at the door. Thanks!

I'm usually not a fan of the step-sibling romance, but I will grant Tsukishima-sensei an exemption as her line is so smart, telling, and funny, and her teens are relatable and weirdly realistic for light shojo comedy inhabitants.

The story is quite generic and predictable. I like the illustrations, but the story, not so much. I feel like it's been recycled several times before and offer nothing new so far. I won't probably continue reading the rest of the volumes.

Cute Start

Liked this right away. Interesting premise so I'll probably finish the series. No offense to the author/artist but I feel like the art on the cover is cuter than the art of the actual manga (totally a personal opinion & didn't influence my rating/enjoyment at all)

Very beautiful art style! I also really liked how the two of them started clean with the boy communicating his thoughts/feelings a lot rather than be the same melancholic guy. It was refreshing!
