A simple drive becomes an adventure full of misfortunes, breathtaking scenery, and undeniable attraction in Kat Paige's debut romcom, Bumps in the Road.
Piper Greenway’s best friend Rachel is moving to Edinburgh, Scotland and Piper is going with her…for the week. Piper has mapped out every detail for the two of them, including lodging, meals, touristy escapades, and apartment shopping. But then Rachel’s brother surprises them on the plane and ruins everything. Piper has known both the Moreau siblings since they were children. They were all friends until high school, when Piper overheard Nick say something truly unforgivable about her. She’s hated him ever since.
Nick Moreau almost doesn’t go to Scotland on account of Piper being there. However, he is determined to be a good brother and help Rachel with her move. What he hasn’t told anyone, though, is that he too is looking to move to the U.K. and has a plan to make this dream a reality. His plan is postponed when Rachel gets called away to a last-minute mandatory school orientation, so he and Piper are now stuck alone in a car, driving through the Scottish Highlands.
A day of bad luck forces Nick and Piper to get to know each other again through deep conversations, a clearing up of the past, and an intense connection that they need to work through before the week is up.
Kat Paige is a writer of romance books with humor, heart, and a touch of spice. Originally a native of St. Louis, MO, she now lives in New York with one roommate who is more like family and an abundance of personified succulents. When not writing, she’s probably reading, baking, going to Broadway musicals, or watching TV shows she will inevitably get too emotionally invested in.

I read this book in a single day and I could not put it down! I love a good enemies to romance, and I’m usually not fond of the misunderstanding trope but this was very well done! These characters are so relatable I felt like on of my friends could’ve been telling me this story.
I definitely would recommend this to anyone who loves romance and likes to laugh. It was a very quick read, and I enjoyed every bit of it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tropes: “Enemies” to lovers Misunderstanding Best friends brother Road trip Forced proximity
Favorite quote out of context (because I love reading these in other reviews😁):
“My heart has been broken a thousand times by her, what’s a thousand more. Hell, what’s a million more? I’m happy to have my heart broken every day if it means I get to keep her in my life.”
I MEAN. 😢
This story of a roadtrip in Scotland that takes a major detour for our main characters Pippa and Nick was so good! I read it in a single day — couldn’t put it down.
This book offers all the heart-squeezing things I love — cinnamon roll MMC, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, best friend’s brother (who calls her sweetheart in the most endearing way).
The storyline was funny, heartfelt and totally realistic — and the way Kat describes Scotland is SPOT ON. I’ve been to many of the locations in the book and her writing took me right back! Excellent work in this regard.
As for the love story - well, it’s swoony and adorable and heartbreaking at times. You will root for these two with all your heart. Nick is the sweetest teddy bear of a guy and Pippa is feisty yet sensitive - together they’re a little bit of literary magic.
Thanks to the author for an ARC of this title so I could experience this story early — I def recommend checking it out when it releases May 7 (paperback and Kindle Unlimited)!
Please don’t take 3 stars to mean this book is bad, I’d consider it average.
Bumps in the Road is a cute romcom that takes place over the course of 5 days when Piper goes to Scotland to help her best friend, Rachel, move. The trip goes awry when Rachel’s brother and Pipers long time nemesis Nick crashes their trip.
The writing of this one is a bit simplistic and reads a bit more like YA but with adult content. Both Piper and Nick come across as “adult” YA characters in the way that they describe their feelings for each other, it reminded me a bit of high school crushes. Despite the simple prose and slight immaturity, I was engaged throughout the entire book. There were times when I forgot I was reading because I was engrossed in the story, and I even found myself giggling at a few scenes.
The story follows Piper and Nick who fall in love over the course of a week, however the first 70% of the book is just one day. The pacing is a bit weird and things just kept happening to them to create conflict to a point where it was almost unbelievable. That being said, the continual joke about the electric car was funny, as was a lot of the conflict in this book. Additionally, the internal conflicts of both Nick and Piper are a bit inconsistent, especially towards the end. Piper is a serial monogamist, but then she’s afraid of commitment, but she’s also afraid of losing her best friend by dating her brother even though she’s fine with the commitment. It’s a bit all over the place in parts.
Overall Bumps in the Road is a cute, easy read that would be perfect as a lighthearted palette cleanser. Spice rating: 🌶️.5-🌶️🌶️/5
“But our stories are not separate. We’re in the same book—just in different chapters and in different locations.” When Piper decided to accompany her best friend Rachel to Scotland to help her move in and get settled the last person she’s expecting to see on this trip is Rachel’s brother Nick. Piper used to fantasize about being with Nick until everything changed. Piper has spent the last 12 years hating Nick with a deadly passion for all the cruel things he has said about her but was in all just one big misunderstanding. When Piper and Nick spend 24 hours stuck together driving through Scotland she dreads spending so much time alone with the one person she can’t stand. But will 24 hours time be enough to mend their shattered relationship or just make things worse. I absolutely loved this novel. Throughout this novel there are several connections to other novels, tv shows and movies which I absolutely loved. I have never been to Scotland but learning more about the life style, tourist attractions, and scenery of Scotland was amazing! The interactions and relationships between characters all seemed so real and truly felt like I was reading a story based on real life events. This novel had me laughing and smiling throughout the entirety of the story. There is not a single thing I would change about this novel. It was a super easy read and packed full with lots of information and details making the story truly unbelievable. I would recommend this book to anyone 18+ who loves romance books and the tropes enemies to lovers, best friends brother, or miscommunication.
What a feel good frenemies to lovers story!! I loved the absolute road trip from hell in one of the worlds most beautiful locations. Nothing like time stuck in a car to force our protagonists to face the long standing (almost entirely one sided) rift between them. This gave me all the giddy feels!!!
Piper is a spitfire who knows who she is (an unapologetic phone addict) and what she likes and doesn't like...well maybe. She thinks she has her mind made up about Nick after an incident from their past but her heart and body very much beg to differ the longer they are stuck with that damned electric car.
Nick is the brother of Piper's best friend and once upon a time, he used to be Piper's friend too. Somewhere along the line he fell hard and he just keeps tumbling the more time they spend together in Scotland. He is charming and thoughtful despite Piper's misconception, he only ever wants what's best for everyone. His kindness and caring melted me right along with Piper.
I highly recommend this book if you like: *Forced Proximity *Frenemies to Lovers *LGBTQ Representation *Best Friend's Brother *No Third Act Breakup!!
Thanks so much Kat Paige for allowing me to be on your ARC team and be one of the first to take this trip. I can't wait for more of your work in the future, it was a thoroughly enjoyable ride!
This was such a cute and fun romcom! It was so easy to get immersed in the story and get attached to the characters. It definitely was a wild ride for Piper and Nick - adventure-wise and emotionally!
I will say this book has made me very cautious about getting an electric car in Scotland lmao. But I absolutely love how their mishaps and frustrations with the electric car really provided the story with a unique take to the whole Stuck on a Roadtrip with Your Enemy trope!
I really enjoyed the dual povs of Piper and Nick and seeing their emotional growth throughout the story. I really felt for Piper and all her bad luck and I really loved how caring Nick was throughout the whole roadtrip experience. They were both easy to love characters (and of course so was Rachel! I do wonder if we'll get another book with Rachel and see her love story get a happy ending.)
Piper and Nick's love story was so fun to read about and I loved reading the bits of flashback (especially with the changing the tire scene) because then you could see everything click into place but could also understand where the characters misread everything.
Overall this book was so fun and a cute romcom! I'm glad I now know about Piper and Nick's love story!
🧡 Dual POVs 💚 Sister's Best Friend 🧡 Demisexual Rep 💚 Forced Promixty 🧡 Best Friend's Older Brother 💚 Misunderstanding 🧡 Childhood Crushes 💚 Road Trip Vibes 🧡 Supportive Sister/ Best Friend 💚 Mention of Grief
Piper helped her best friend move to a different country. Her best friend's older brother, Nick, surprised her on joining their trip. Piper was not thrilled about it at all. Circumstances changed, and somehow Nick and Piper stuck with each other. This is the opportunity for them to finally talk about why Piper is angry towards Nick for so many years. They could move past it and finally become friends again. It seems like their feelings rise to the surface, and they have to figure out what that means. Even though they haven't defined their relationship, they make such an adorable couple! I love how Nick's sister was a supportive character when they were figuring out what they were to each other. She didn't act like a terrible friend or sister when she saw them together like you see in movies or TV shows. She knew something had happened after the long road trip and encouraged them to talk to each other. I really enjoyed reading this story. I really liked reading the epilogue, and they were so cute together!
Piper and Nicks story is one that can easily be seen in real life. It is for sure a best friends brother trope, a bit enemies to lovers, childhood friends and type A, meets type B love interests. I gave this 4 stars because I really liked how well written the story was, especially for a multiple POV story. Typically those are not my favorite since they can be difficult to follow, but this was written beautifully. I also personally really liked how regardless of feelings at the time, they knew each others ins and outs to handle the difficult moments with each other and for each other.
This was a very easy read for me, finished it in just over a day ( I took time to sleep this time otherwise it could easily have been a one day read for me!). Personally I think its even a great spring is here read since it is lighthearted, with its thunderstorm moments that gives it a very spring essence (if you wanted to compare it to a season, or find a good season to read it in!). I would for sure recommend this book, always check content warnings however to make sure its the right fit for you.
I devoured this one in ONE sitting. I literally could not stop reading after I had started. First of all, a road trip romance is one of my faves, and I've read maybe three good ones in my life. This one makes four and it's definitely at the top of the list!
I love the demi rep, and I love that Nick wanted to learn more about it and what it meant for her specifically. I also appreciate the way Kat wrote the panic attack scenes, because it was incredibly relatable and not over the top!
Nick and Piper are everything to me, from the semi-mutual pining to the miscommunication, to the realizations and them basically just saying "screw it". They're so well written and I adore them.
Rachel is the best bestie & sister, ever. She truly loves them both so much and wants the best for them. And I'm so proud of her for taking such a big leap with Scotland!!!
I received this book as an ARC. Thank you to Kat and her team.
I LOVED this book.
Brief synopsis (no intended spoilers)
Piper hasn’t had an easy life. She has no living blood family. Thankfully, she’s had Rachel and Nick and their parents as her chosen family since a young age. Rachel is moving to Scotland for school. Nick and Piper go along to help her get settled.
The main problem? Piper. Hates. Nick. No info on why here. You must read the book to find out. It’s worth it. Trust me.
Through a series of unexpected events, Piper and Nick have a terrible, awful, no good, very bad day together. But…
They talk, they laugh, they… 😊
This books has drama, humor, and a satisfying happily ever after. Piper is a fantastic work in progress and Nick is sweet. Completely “book husband” material.
I was so excited for this ARC due to the setting being in Scotland! I traveled there years ago and fell in love with the highlands and wanted to be transported back there via this book. The book did deliver on helping me revisit places I enjoyed in the Highlands and in Edinburgh. There are lovable MCs and the spice was good.
It did seem like the books focus was just slamming electric cars the entire time. Basically, electric cars were the villain of the book. I also felt that the MMCs like “ah ha” moment about what makes him happy (making jam) was not really believable or at least wasn’t written in a way that had me invested or rooting for the character in that endeavor. I’m not the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope either.
Overall, I would say this book was okay/average. The dynamic between the MCs and the setting of Scotland were the best parts of the book.
Besties...when we tell you to run to the bookstore or #kindleunlimited on May 7, we mean RUNNNNN to grab your copy of this adorable, funny, sexy, joy of a book!!! We fell in love, and we fell hard! (Just like Nick...)
What we LOVED that you will too: ❤️Enemies to Lovers ❤️Snarky, saucy FMC, Piper ❤️Gooey cinnamon roll MMC, Nick (swoon) ❤️Just One Car ❤️Road trip vibes through gorgeous Scotland ❤️He falls first, and HARD ❤️Nicknames! Pip, Sweetheart, & Nicodemus ❤️Guaranteed HEA will all the happy feelings ❤️Best friend's brother
Quite simply, we ADORED this novel from new-to-us author @katpaigeauthor and cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next! (Rachel's story????) Out May 7 in paperback and Kindle Unlimited!
If this is Kat Paige's debut, I'm excited for what's to come. I don't know what I loved more Piper and Nick's connection, or the way I was immersed into the breathtaking setting. Trust me you won't regret tagging along on this comical and heartfelt adventure.
Piper is a planner and when she accompanies her best friend Rachel on her move to Scotland, nowhere in her plans is for Rachel's brother Nick, who she dislikes, to tag along. Nick is there to be supportive brother and to chase a chance of moving to the U.K. in hopes of putting distance between him and the unrequited love he feels for Piper. When Piper and Nick spend an unplanned day together getting to know each other once again, an intense connection will be revealed that will leave them wondering how they will make it back home without falling for each other.
This is a cute enemies to lovers type of book but really the MMC has never considered the FMC. Piper had a huge crush on Nick during their childhood but has hated him for years after overhearing something super negative about her. She goes on a trip to Scotland to get her best friend settled and then Nick (her best friends brother) showed up to surprise his sister. The two end up on a road trip together and things just go crazy. The story was crazy and it just kept building on the bad day. It definitely made me question the use of all electric cars in Europe. It gave them a chance to talk through their history together and it was really sweet how they shared openly and were able to come together. It took Piper longer than I expected to accept and believe in her true feelings. The story talked about her sexuality and its all about connection so that part made me think it would be easier for her to accept the connection that was already established with Nick. But once she did allow her feelings to blossom their HEA was precious!
“A few arguments, a lot of vehicular trauma, a few deep talks”
I definitely had a stupid grin on my face the entire time. Kat’s descriptions of the tourist attractions, scenery and overall energy of Scotland were SPOT ON – it made me feel like I was back home again.
Piper is a feisty, yet realistic FMC. Nick is an absolute golden retriever, cinnamon roll MMC. Usually, I’m not a huge fan of the miscommunication trope, but this was dealt with in such a respectful way, which felt true to the character’s personalities.
10/10 would read again, and I can’t wait to get started on book 2!!!
Tropes: Best friend’s brother ‘Enemies’ to lovers (I’m using that term loosely here) Childhood crush Road trip Forced proximity Miscommunication LGBTQ representation HEA (because who doesn’t love a happy ending)
This was an interesting read. The first 60% went really fast, and then it kind of dragged a little for me until maybe 80%, and finished strong again. Nothing bad in that 20% - I would just read a little then put it down without thinking about it to look at something else because it wasn’t holding my attention, before reminding myself I wanted to finish it tonight. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and honestly I don’t know how many books she’s written or where this falls in order. I’ve borrowed the next so I know there’s at least one more. I started this kind of on a fluke from a Threads post and got hooked. If you enjoy a sibling’s best friend romance with low spice and a Scottish setting, check this book out!
Piper’s helping her best friend, Rachel, with her move to Scotland. Rachel’s brother and Piper’s childhood nemesis, Nick, tags along. Piper and Nick end up on an unexpected road trip in a small car and oh my goodness…they seriously have the worst luck ever. Forced proximity/confined spaces, dual point-of-view, some spice, sort of second chance romance, cinnamon roll main male character and a whole lot of laughs made this a super cute, totally lovable, feel-good debut rom-com. There were some amazing quotes in this book, like when Nick says “Forget Nessie, I could spend all day gazing at Piper”…sigh. Or when Piper says “She loves her chosen people with her whole heart”.
Many thanks to the author for trusting me with an advanced reader copy and honest review.
I was lucky enough to read this early, and I absolutely LOVED every second of it. I’ve been super busy at work, so I didn’t expect to finish this quickly, but I read it in 2 days. It’s such a fun, cute story that makes you kick your feet and giggle. There’s a little spice, but it’s not overwhelming, and it perfectly matches the MCs personalities. I was a little sad that we didn’t get much insight into their “real life” beyond their trip, but I totally get that’s not the focus of the story, just me being selfish and wanting even more of the characters! Definitely recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from this author in the future. ❤️❤️
Let me start off this review by saying Nick never hated Piper. Nick is a perfect golden revtrieve, that showed time and time again that he respected Piper and welcomed him into his family. We love Nick!
Piper… babe… I get it! Having a crush on someone in highschool while going through puberty is hard! Piper automatically assumed the absolute worst from Nick. Phew was I glad that mess was all cleaned up and Nick wasn’t a complete ass.
Bumps In The Road was a 5 star read, it had an amazing story line, good amount of open door spice, it was comical and the characters were so easy to fall in love with!
Ugh! I really felt for Nick and Piper. What a shit day they had! Although, it felt more like an enemies to friends to lovers than a true enemies to lovers I still completely loved the journey. There was one aspect I could have done without and that was the miscommunication trope. I personally find this trope extremely frustrating and wish the book had been advertised as having a miscommunication trope because it felt like a large part of Nick and Piper journey. The ending was absolutely adorable though! • • •
The romance between Nick and Piper builds slowly and once ignited burns hot. Nick and Piper are traveling with Rachel (Nick's sister/Piper's BFF) to move her to Scotland for college. While the Nick and Piper haven't seen eye to eye in years they agree to get along for the length of the trip for Rachel's sake. Only mishap after mishap keeps happening forcing Nick and Piper to spend more and more time together. The mutual pining, the yearning, the care taking, the forced proximity, mental health rep, and the Scotland setting everything about this book is PERFECTION.
Dual POV, Spicy, Mental Health Rep, Best Friends Brother, Care Taking, Mutual Pining, Childhood Crush, It Was Always You
A cute little forced proximity romance. Rachel is moving to Scotland so of course her best friend, Piper, is helping her move and get settled, she has the whole thing planned, a full itinerary on her phone and everything- until Rachels brother Nick joins them at the last minute and throws all her plans awry. Rachel and Nick get stuck alone on the very worst day, car accident, broken phone, missed train, etc. and all the tension from growing up together and pent up anger result in a hookup and then of course they both admit that they've had feelings for each other forever. It has a very cute HAE and an easy read.
So cute !! The characters are great I loved getting to know them . This book makes most bad days look like a walk in the park. I love how caring Nick is even when piper still “hates him” . I found myself wishing to know the backstory of the hate early on and felt that once it was revealed it didn’t seem like something piper would have let last as long without some sort of explanation earlier when they where teenagers. Over all I enjoyed the story the few spicy scenes were great . Also I will now probably never drive an electric car lol
My first Kat Paige book! This book had everything I’ve ever wanted in a romcom: miscommunication, best friend’s brother, AND it took place in just a short week. Even though it all happened in such a short time, I feel like I got to know these characters well through the flashbacks, their eventual communication, and just how they are as people through how they love and want to be loved.
A short and sweet introduction to a series, and I cannot wait to read the next two.
Also laughed through the whole thing because no matter how bad a day I could have, Piper had a worse one.
This was such a fun read, I absolutely could not put it down! The title is very fitting as the main characters, Piper and Nick, definitely hit some bumps in the road as they go from childhood friends to enemies to lovers. Also love that Nick is the best friends brother, it covers a lot of tropes. Highly recommend if you're looking for a funny romance. Thank you to the author for sending me this e-ARC
ARC review: I really enjoyed reading this book😊 It was such a cute story and made me all giddy while reading it 🙈 It’s funny and sweet and I could not put it down.
10/10 recommend if you like books with enemies to lovers, force proximity, and misunderstandings(which is not usually my favorite, but was really good in this book)
Favorite quote: “She’s going to yell at me. And I’m going to like it.” 🫶🏽
How can you resist a best friend's brother, hates each other because they love each other rom-com? Simple answer- you cant.
Nick and Piper's witty banter makes this book fly by, you feel as though you are in the car watching your two best friends realize they love one another. The small anxiety rep moments are perfectly placed without hitting you in te face with them and the spice not only is toe-curling, but is placed so tactfully that it makes so much sense in the storyline. This book could truly do no wrongs, my main complaint being that a year is 365 days not 360 (read the story to understand the reference!!!). I will now be sure to request a gasoline (petrol) car in the UK to avoid all of Piper and Nick's electric car issues :)
***Thank you to Kat Paige for the ARC in exchange for my honest review***
“Bumps in the road” is a cute Romcom that takes place in Scotland! Love books set in Scotland so this is what really drew me to this book! Love the brothers best friend trope but I really dislike the miscommunication trope lol 😂 ( the author even mentions this in the storyline) And the characters in this book seemed very juvenile (which was kind of awkward)and I’m pretty sure they were adults. The constant bickering was a meh 🫤 the banter wasn’t bad and I felt like this story revolved around a “ Electric Car 🚙 lol 😂 and that’s all I can focus on. Overall it was a cute and entertaining romcom but it fell a little flat for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️
This one is really closer to a 3.5 ⭐️. It really is a feel good/giddy book. It is one where it is all out there, you don’t have to guess anything. The couple is super sweet, and there are plenty of tropes. Misunderstanding Forced Proximity Best Friend’s Brother Frenemies to Lovers He falls first If you want a quick read that is simple and sweet this would be a good one!
