A cold-hearted act. A vexed sleuth. When local champion of industry and cricket fan Sir Gerald Langton is found dead in the cellar at the Jolly Cricketer after a charity cricket match, the idyllic pub is thrown into turmoil. Was it an accident, or did someone commit a terrible deed?
Veronica Vale, our spirited amateur sleuth, can't ignore the signs foul play is most clearly afoot. The Jolly Cricketer becomes the centre of the investigation as Veronica uncovers secrets hidden beneath the polite, upper-class facade.
From gossip shared over a gin fizz to rivalries on the cricket pitch, Veronica sorts friend from foe in a community where nearly everyone has a motive and almost everyone has something to hide.
As she follows a trail that leads from dusty records to scandalous affairs, Veronica finds herself drawn into a mystery with more twists than a perfectly bowled over. And when an old friend and fellow journalist is accused of the murder, the pressure mounts to find the killer.

Death at the Jolly Cricketer is book 7 in the Veronica Vale Investigates series, a delightfully gripping 1920s historical cozy mystery that invites readers into a world where secrets simmer and traditions hold sway until a deadly scandal threatens to unravel it all.
as time goes by I find this series less compelling - this one was a quick read like all the rest but the significant lack of Ruby adds an interesting twist and a cliffhanger for the end which... nice except I hate cliffhangers XD.
anywhooo this one didn't hold my attention that much, and there were so many twists and turns it was starting to make me a little dizzy - it's not a bad book but the series has lost its shine for me and I now just want to read the 8th book for the sake of completion and less to do with anything else.
also the cliffhanger in question - I have a few theories but I can't lie, Ruby choosing to *disappear* into thin air rather than anything else, for whatever reason though I have my own thoughts on it - makes a hell of a lot of sense. veronica becomes increasingly insufferable as the books go by, she's judgemental and frequently uses her status as a middle class white woman with a 'saintly' [he's not] father as her get out of jail free card for everything she does.
the cast are comedic but having accidentally skipped one and read all the rest, the charm is becoming lost on me honestly and I'm really sad to say that because I was addicted to these books at the start. it's a shame really.
I very much enjoyed this story. Clever characters and a quick-paced plot made it an enjoyable read. The ending is a surprise, leaving you to look forward to the next book.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this entertaining cozy mystery and can recommend it to lovers of the genre.
