Rate this book
Ding dong! It’s the 15th of November 2017. The Earth is now online.

Without warning, black pyramid-like structures appear in the sky across the globe—silent, looming, and utterly inexplicable. For six months, humanity watches and waits. Then, a childlike voice announces a new reality: Earth has become a game board. From now on, survival depends on playing by the Dark Spires’ rules.

1st: The Dark Spire is the final authority.

2nd: Game time is between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

3rd: All players must strive to conquer the Spire.

Each game is a test of wits, nerve, and sanity. Defy the rules, and the punishment is death.

Tang Mo, a quick-thinking realist, relies on strategy and reason to navigate this terrifying new world. Along the way, he meets Fu Wenduo, a calm and deadly ally whose secrets run deep. As the two face increasingly complex and psychological challenges, a tentative bond begins to form—one built on trust, instinct, and the unspoken understanding between survivors.

But the Spires are watching. And it has only just begun…

The apocalyptic, dystopian, unlimited flow, survival game genre is definitely growing on me. If you liked Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, Solo Leveling and/or Dungeon Crawler Carl you will love this. It’s fast paced and had me captivated and completely invested from the first chapter.

November 15th, 2017 The Earth is online! Everyone is now in the game system of the Dark Spires which mysteriously appeared six months ago. This is vol. 1 of 8 published by Rosmei. I started and stopped the FT/MTL of this novel several times before Rosmei published this because it just wasn’t my favorite genre. Now I might have to finish the FT while I wait for the remaining books 😬.

MC Tang Mo: librarian, calm, smart, calculating
ML Fu Wendao: really don’t know much about him yet but he’s smart and I think part of some special forces unit

🥚Infinite flow, survival, apocalyptic, dystopian- all of it
🥚Intriguing games (I am usually not a big fan of games)- clearing floors and dungeons by completing games and gaining abilities and prize items
🥚 Monsters but from fairy tales and popular video games
🥚 Slow burn. No romance yet but setting the stage and the story itself is so good you won’t even miss it
🥚 Instant action and doesn’t stop so you feel invested immediately, fast paced and fairly easy to understand
🥚 Love the world building and intro to the Dark Spires and learning the rules

*I didn’t try and solve the games - I let the author explain it to me but I’m sure some people enjoy that aspect of these types of novels.

This carrd art has some amazing art including the Thai versions which are gorgeous

"Luck is one form of strength. No matter who's got the luckier hand, strength determined the winner.”

description

This book absolutely pulled me in from start to finish. I’ve read plenty of sci-fi and survival horror over the years, but this Unlimited Flow Danmei format hits a completely different nerve. It’s strategic, unpredictable, and just the right amount of bleak. Even without a romantic subplot, the character work is sharp. Tang Mo is one of those leads who holds your attention without needing flash—he's cautious, adaptable, and quietly compelling. Watching him navigate a collapsing world where logic barely holds is a ride all its own.

The challenges feel like twisted parodies of childhood games, but they’re designed with the kind of precision that makes every round feel like a mental puzzle crossed with a moral dilemma. The tension doesn’t spike once and fizzle—it simmers through each chapter. You never really feel safe. Even when the rules are clear, the game still plays dirty. The tone walks a tightrope between horror and humor, which somehow makes everything hit harder. It’s clever in the way it slowly peels back the worldbuilding, giving you just enough context while still keeping things weird and dangerous.

What sets this apart is how consistent the chaos is. The world reacts like ours might, and that realism makes the surreal elements land even better. From desperate governments to crumbling public trust, it all spirals in a way that makes sense. The game systems are wild but logical, even when they seem absurd on the surface. The writing is tight and atmospheric, only occasionally bogged down when it starts spelling out dungeon mechanics a little too much. Still, if you're into dark games, psychological survival, and calculated worldbuilding, this one is easy to recommend.

This first volume certainly sets the stage for a really entertaining world. It does get darker than I had anticipated at times but there's a good mix in between with lighthearted moments. I must say I enjoyed the Mario & giant worm game a lot more than the angel and devil one. Tang Mo is a charismatic MC and being in his head is fun. I had been craving a dungeon/videogame style novel and while this one wasn't exactly what I was expecting, it really gripped me after a somewhat slow start. The book that gives TM descriptions of the items and skills he collects roasting him was hilarious as well.

I'm so glad I have the 2nd vol. at the ready because I'm dying to see how he does in the first floor with all the abilities he's collected and what Fu Wenduo shared with him.

Did I read a different book than everyone else??? So many people call this "a masterpiece" and praise this to heavens and back... what... so far for me this story is a 5/10 at MOST (although this is only book 1, maybe my mind will change later on).

What I liked:
⇾ the premise of the story; the Earth going "online" and everyone having to play games that are inspired by well-known irl ones.
⇾ players having unique abilities.
⇾ the dynamic between Tang Mo and Fu Wendou, dunno, I found their conversations really entertaining haha, even though there weren't many of them.

What I disliked:
⇾ Tang Mo having the personality of a rock - the only parts where he seemed like a human being were during his interactions with his ability book. Thing is, I like calm and collected main characters, especially in survival stories like this, but there is a line between composed and bland.
⇾ the logic behind the game solutions??? What??? Tang Mo would solve the game in the most backwards way possible, ok, then he would over explain how he figured it out and... WHAT??? The book tried so hard to come off as smart with all the numbers and "oh this character used this one word when they told the story, that means they are lying" and in the end, it just came off even dumber. If you have to jump through so many hoops just to explain how the game works and what the solution is, maybe it isn't that well-thought-out? The fact that the MC has to explain through MULTIPLE paragraphs how he solved the puzzle might be a sign that something doesn't work here.
⇾ the uh... weird nationalistic comments? I do see them from time to time in Chinese web novels, but uhh... this book didn't even try to be subtle about it.

Since I loved KoD and really enjoyed Global Examination, I expected to like this book too. That's a pity though. Will read the second one eventually, because they were sold as a pack haha, so I really hope the next one will make me eat my words.
-------------------------------------------------------
I ended up reading the entire novel haha, the mtl was atrocious though!
Anyway, my opinion on the book didn't change much, the games were a mixed bag - some were kinda fun to read (like the murder-mansion with the top players), unfortunately, most of the games were nonsensical and convoluted, the mtl didn't help, but the author's explanations also were really dumb.
I still stand with my unpopular opinion, why is this book always praised so much???

This was recommended by a friend. I also heard others say its amazing and like... for me not really. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but the games are either stupid or just like fight, not many are that interesting for me, which for a unlimited flow type novel sucks, because the plot is related to games. I also don't like the mc so much, like can't properly care about him tbh... I can see it's charm, since I feel it from time to time, but sadly not much of my style

Well, that was shit :D.
No idea, what the people were reading, if there was a wonderful and good translation, because the currently still online fantranslation is a bad MTL one, and the official translation is the typical stiff chinese translation, where you just know that some words are just NOT what that means.
So yeah, the translation was the first problem with this one.
Like they talk about children who met Tang mo. I thought that are like children, smoll ones, around 10 or younger. No ... they meant Youth around 15-16 ... and there are more translation irks like that.
Then the games - they were all boring and all the puzzles had solution that just didn't made ANY sense. Tang Mo just knew the answer and thats it? Bullshit. Also the author can't write fighting scenes.

I have no problem with Tang Mo himself, even tho hes pretty cold and emotionless. But also the whole world building is just a mess.
There are three forms of players: official, reserve and irregulars. Irregulars are people who killed someone in the first 3 days of the game start. And the Dark Spire monsters hate irregulars (which is fine). BUt all the offical and reserve players are starting to kill people left and right too, but thats ok??? riiiiight....
Also after 4 days of the earth is online EVERY human society rule is gone, and everyone is killing everyone and its just so stupid. Sure, some ppl would, but literally EVERYONE is out for blood.
Also there is well... yes there IS a goal, to conquer the Spire, but somehow its all soo.. messy. Tang Mo doesnt really has a goal there, hes running from there to this and back, its just not ... there is just no common thread.

The whole plot is a great idea, really, but how its written and shit, its just not good *shrug*. Sadly I still have Vol 2 at home, and i probably gonna read it, because it was expensive :/ maybe Global Examination or Kaleidoscope of Death are better.

Interesting premise, I am always a sucker for a good distopian.
Were the games sometimes a little bit cringy? Yes.
Am I also glued to every word? Yes.

I also cannot wait for Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo's relationship to develop, they are both very interesting, kind of stoic characters which are my favorites.

23-year-old librarian Tang Mo is living a quiet life when black pyramid-like shapes appear around the world. At first, they cause concern, but as time passes and nothing happens, people fall into a false sense of security and go on with their lives...until suddenly, a voice announces that the Earth is "online" and gives people three days to "eliminate" someone else. From there, Tang Mo and other "players" around the world are pulled into the world of the Dark Spire, which consists of sadistic games with great rewards and fatal penalties for losses. Some games are team based, others are single player, and still others pit people against each other for survival. The ultimate goal is to "challenge the Spire" by leveling up and progressing each "floor" of the Spire. As he adjusts to his new reality, Tang Mo meets allies and enemies alike, one of whom is an intriguing mystery who, while not an outright threat, might not necessarily be friendly. Tang Mo's goal is to survive, and he'll use his newfound ability and his smarts to do so, but will it be enough?

This was a very strong start to what will end up being an eight-part series. The first 20-30 pages consisted of world-building and so were a little slow for me, but thankfully the author managed to lay the groundwork without dragging things on. Then, once the Earth went online, the story set a fast pace that hardly ever let up. Tang Mo is portrayed as a smart, though somewhat aloof protagonist who is nevertheless likable. More than once, he has to make some difficult choices that made me cringe in sympathy, and his periodic displays of kindness help maintain his humanity. The first introduction with the second male lead was great as well, giving just enough of a taste to leave me wanting more; these two guys are both intelligent and have interesting personalities, and I can tell they're going to provide a lot of entertainment as a result. Even the side characters are pretty memorable thanks to the unique interactions they have with Tang Mo. I was impressed at the impression they all left on me.

The games themselves were brilliant and engrossing, and I loved reading about Tang Mo strategizing to survive both the intellectual and physical challenges. They were difficult enough that I could see how they'd be extremely difficult to overcome, but then once the solution was explained, I had that "a-ha" moment that filled me with the satisfaction of a smart resolution. The author has already impressed me with book one, so I can't wait to see what comes next!

Summarizing half of the book into vol1 cause I was literally just reading cause my version is joined, have read half the whole book already ^~^
Dystopian, Unlimited flow, everything have ever wanted to enjoy in one setting, the first volume set expectations for upcoming volumes, and I love myself some idgaf main characters, who's not interested in saving everyone>.<

Practically, the game setting is easy to follow if you pay alot of attention and some people left reviews on NU about the game setting and explanation not being great, homie you just didn't pay attention, I live for the games mate.
Am gonna burn in hell for the slow burn, but yeah am here for it>>.<< their non-trusting dynamic is so fun, I mean two smart people hiding something from each other, hah, what a fun read!

Is this the part where I tell my mom I learned a lot from reading??? Like the part where he was talking about how to recognize flowers or some shit, I realized wait, that's a good knowledge, my notepad was working full-time while I was reading this::::“You know a lot about flowers. Did you use to work at a florist?” “I like reading books.” he proud of it^^

ALSO the Queen of heart's theory from Alice in Wonderland, like bro, I don't know jackshit, and before this I literally don't even know what the Möbius ring is or was, I had to go search it up after lmao!!
but yeah teio is so good, and the fandom is so little HELP-

Not a bad read but the MC seemed a bit of a flat character and I'm not a huge fan of the writing style . Maybe it's lost in translation but it seems very explanatory in a stilted way , the challenges/dungeons also seem kinda boring and simple.
The mario level was interesting but let down in the execution that the tension left every time it talked about mario itself. idk maybe I went into this expecting more than I should.
Still I have heard people love this book so I'm persevering!

So far... this is very average. It's not something I hated, but... I could rate this lower. I want to give this series a chance, though, and I know I can't judge the entire series by book 1. The author has time to grow and develop things more. However, so far the characters don't feel like much of anything... even our main character, Tang Mo, feels pretty flat and is largely emotionless when facing this changed world and deaths left and right. The action scenes also lack tension, in my opinion. But here is my major crit: the challenges.

The challenges in particular I can't help but pick on a bit because, well, they are literally the huge overarching plot point for this unlimited flow series. For one, the challenges are certainly hurt by the author's current inability to write tight/tense action or instill fear at the consequences of losing. Also, the author has a terrible habit of info dumping about everything, especially the solutions, in order to jusify themselves. Some explanation, of course, is to be expected for the games, but sometimes it's like... way too long for a solution that is honestly not that hard to wrap one's head around. On that point, I need to complain a bit about the solutions:

The author really set themselves up here, because they actually have to think of clever solutions or put other factors in the way after boasting that the main character not only was really smart and talented at games prior to the Earth going online, but has since gained even more heightened intellect due to becoming an official player (and gaining a certain IQ ability). It's not that I want Tang Mo to be perfect, I would rather he show more emotion and struggle through games, but if you say he is supposed to be super smart and calculating, you have to give him suitable challenges. Even in Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, where Kim Dokja knows the content of the scenarios before they even happen, singNsong was capable of still creating ways to challenge him without undermining that plot point.

(all volumes finished)
4.2/5
it took me 8 days to finish this novel despite reading it day and night. the information contained within was immense, and i can say it was a little overwhelming at times. there were many games during the book that i could not understand at all and completely skimmed through just to see the ending, or i had to enable the use of ai to help me understand. while that is a lack of knowledge and smartness on my part as well as the translation difficulties that come with, it made the novel a little bit less enjoyable. because how am i supposed to enjoy it if i dont understand whats going on at all? i understand a lot of danmei are like that, where the explanations are confusing and i hate for it to affect the reviews, but either way it did affect my reading.
noah’s game was the best game out of all the others so far. not only was i able to actually understand the rules of the game, but i also understood what was going on!! that just made the game even more exciting. the plot twists were freaking crazy and it was one of the first times my heart was beating so fast because i was so scared tangmo was gonna die. literally it was action packed as well as wisely written. even i am at a bittersweet loss of words for bai ruoyou’s death. his death definitely made an impact. very well written and thought out game. loved it. not only that but the part during the game where it was wenduo’s turn to go out and tangmo immediately realized that it wasnt him he was talking to 😭😭😭 is that true love or what and wenduo gave him A SECRET KISSS PLZZZZ THATS SO CUTE they’re literally soulmates asf
- “Tang Mo’s biggest secret is that Tang Mo always thought it was fortunate that everyone’s physical fitness has improved. Otherwise, they would only do it once in this life. Fu Wenduo’s physical strength is really good.” i’m feeling a lot of emotions rn like i wanna laugh my ass off but i’m also so embarrassed omg 😭😭😭😭
^ one of the funniest and my favorite quotes

anyway back to the review, i thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of the book. i feel like it was very well done. we are introduced to a lot (A LOT) of characters, but once you familiarize yourself with the book, its kinda heartwarming to recognize the characters and put a face, personality, and age to them. i loved when nearing the last half of the novel, the players actually cooperated; it was fulfilling to see the different strategies that took place with different characters.
another thing was, i loved was how everything fit together. i must say the author is a genius. they used props and abilities in the last games that were introduced in the beginning of the book. whenever it happened, my mind was blown because i never thought that you could use it like that. everything just fit together which made it see like there were no plot holes.
although the slowburn between fen wenduo and tang mo was exceptionally written, i feel like the relationship itself was a bit lackluster. there were moments that i loved which were the subtle innuendos that made me deadass giggle in the dark at 3am and the very different personalities between the two, but when it came to the actual romance scenes, i was a bit disappointed.
i loved the dynamic between wenduo, shanshan, wensheng, and tangmo. it felt like they were really their little kids omgg it was so heartwarming to see them take care of each other and worry for each other.

i only started reading bc i needed something to fill the hole orv and guee left behind and fu wenduo highkey looked like yjh soooo. got tricked by a fire premise and people hyping the hell out of it. however, it in fact was not up to the task, towards the last 150ish chapters i was just skimming cuz the games were hella ridiculous and convoluted. i didn’t even care to understand the solutions anymore. i thought the real interesting part was the underground world and monster kingdom, as well as the idea of this great filter type thing but. ofc almost nothing was done with that. call me a returnee cuz i swear they be playing games EVERY 10 minutes.
i was also excited for a plot focused bl but there was just. too much plot. there was more romance in the author’s notes than in the novel itself.
also the chars had literally the personality of a paper bag. MAYBE i could excuse fu wenduo for being battle hardened and apathetic to all the death literally all the time, but tang mo?? he is literally a regular guy working a cushy job and he’s just 100% chill with everything happening. like even fu wenduo had to take a smoke when the earth went online. tang mo genuinely felt more emotions when his ability book called him gay or made a dirty joke than when he literally murdered someone with his own hands. i can’t even say the couple has chemistry atp bc i literally cannot characterize them. boring!
but yeah i rlly had to power thru this book but fu wenduo being a CCP member killed me even more it just killed me. buddy they don’t even want u to have rights. the obvious nationalism ruined the immersion so badddd. imagine literally watching the entire world die and being like yeah im MAGA make america great again!!! GIRL ur country doesn’t even exist anymore. they are fr dead.
tldr gave me brain damage tbh

Whoop whoop. Another Danmei book where we have basically "death games" which It's so fun to read about.

We get introduced to Tang Mo, our MC and how he gets pulled into these different games and exploring his new abilities, as well as others.

We also meet his love interest, Fu Wenduo. However, as of the moment, they haven't actually met eachother, I mean, at least in person. Their sudden introduction to one another was quite interesting .

Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo are two types of different "players" and I'm curious whats the backstory of Fu Wenduo regarding the fact he

The games themselves were ok, not super complicated in my opinion. My favourite is for sure the Super Mario one.

Since volume two is already released, I'm planning to read that one straight away.

I'm writing the review for the whole series under the first book because I read it translated in one chunk.
First off, the characterization, the world building, the descriptions are so thoroughly thought-out that you get sucked into this world faster than any other. The line blurring from reality to fantasy is tread so well that when you reach the impossible and absolutely fantastical, it doesn't seem silly or foolish, but rather natural. The employment of fairy tales and children's games is genius. The relationship itself doesn't overpower the story, and the plot is very well-paced. There's a particularly beautiful arc paying homage to Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Characters are unique and there's no one there for "no reason" -- everyone has a role to play. You root for minor characters and gasp when they fail and cheer when they succeed. There's just enough hints that you yourself can figure out certain puzzles, and each arc is different enough that you don't get bored.

Just finished vol 1 and gonna get right into vol 2. I like the mc ^^ I felt like the story started kinda slow, but once things start going with the spires, I liked the pacing and the challenges are interesting. No romance so far, but I am expecting .. Def an apocalyptic read!

Going to include a spoilery summary below to look back at later because this is an 8 vol series and by the time vol 3 releases, I expect to have forgotten everything :’)

I really enjoyed this first entry into the series. The story is quick paced and interesting, even if a little on the simple side. A very binge-able read but I did notice a few translation mishaps towards the latter half that can take you out of the story a little bit.

I picked up The earth is Online set primarily because of how much I loved Global Examination. I was a little worried at first they would be too similar given the genre, but I liked that this series in particular leans a little more into the comedy edge rather than being too dark. I also personally found the characters to be quite charming and the ability book was hilarious.

Finally, even though the interactions between the two leads were few and far between in this volume, there is a teasing build up there that makes me excited to see them meet. Definitely glad I picked this one up.

I’m a sucker for death games so I don’t mind the slower romance more plot centric

Very good first arcs the difficulty increases each time and I’m so attached to the kids as side characters already hope they all meet again soon.

I love how clever and observant the MC Tang Mo is he can be scary and kill without moral issues it’s survival after all but he’s not cruel where he will do it for no reason very much an eye for an eye vibes which is the determination you need for this type of story.

Very well written I can picture everything in my mind through the detailed description.

I've read the fantranslation a while ago which was atrocious, so this was really good. However Tang Mo and the rest of the characters are still very shallow and bland. I do like the games, they're a little cringe but fun to read. Tang Mo does have a severe case of plot armor, so the tension isn't really there. But I do like the chemistry between Tang Mo and Fu Wendou, even with the smallest bit of interaction they had in this book.
