The Player and the Pop Star

Rate this book
Pop sensation Lena Lux knows any publicity is good publicity, until one disastrous night leaves her with a charred reputation and a shattered heart. The fix? A fake relationship with Decker Trace, the arrogant tight end of the Vista City Kings.  It’s a long shot, but her publicist swears it’ll work—and if there’s one thing Lena’s good at, it’s putting on a show.

Decker Trace was ready to retire from football, until his plans literally went up in flames. Which is why he agrees to a PR stunt with everyone’s current musical obsession, Lena Lux. Sure, she can come across as bratty and overdramatic at times, but every guy she’s dated has become insta-famous after their breakup, and that’s exactly what Decker is counting on.

After all, it’s not like they would actually fall for each other while pretending to be in love, right?

The Player and the Pop Star is a dual POV no spice romance and the first book in a planned interconnected series.

"Through the dark nights, I still search for the sun. In my deepest dreams, I still hope you're the one."

My first ever ARC review wow! I'd like to take this chance to thank the wonderful Cait Elise for authoring this wonderfully written and swoon-worthy romance and for allowing me to be part of her ARC team.

Wow, I have no words to describe just how swoony and incredibly healthy the relationship between Lena and Decker came to be, but before all that, I'd like to talk about the things I've come to love about this story.

1) Fake-dating trope with a set time limit. ✅️
2) Green flag ML. ✅️
3) Loveable best friends on both sides. ✅️
4) A light read with no overdramatic scenarios to keep you hanging or overly frustrated. ✅️

In all honesty, this book isn't the type of story that grips you right from the very start, and we do struggle with the frustration of seeing Lena's family dynamic (which honestly had me grinding my teeth more than half of the time). BUT, it is a story that you slowly fall in love with as you read on, in a parallel similar to how our leads fall in love with each other.

I'm absolutely in love with the way the leads' dynamic worked with each other, they had some very real chemistry albeit having doubts of each other's feelings.

I could definitely see the cliche type of romance being loosely inspired by some of the celebrities we see in the wild, which gives the story an air of comfortable familiarity.

The only thing I'd wish for is to see more of Lena and Decker's real relationship. I think I'll actually miss them quite a bit. 🥺

Overall, I would say that it was a solid read and tackles some of the struggles I could see a real-life celebrity having, especially when it comes to how their public persona is addressed.

📆 Anyway, to wrap this ARC Review up, The Player and The Pop Star is now officially available in paperback on Amazon, if this review piqued your interest, be sure to grab a copy! 🥳🎉

Is it just me or I kept picturing Taylor Swift as Lena and Travis Kelce as Decker, in which as a Swiftie, I approve!

It was refreshing to have read a book that doesn't have any cursing nor spice, just pure banter, and tension between the characters. The main characters, as well as the side characters, were so easy to love. And I can't wait for the next books in this series!

If you want to read a clean, lighthearted, and somewhat Taylor Swift coded book, I'd recommend you this one.

Thank you Author Cait Elise for granting me this ARC opportunity.

Thank you to the author for this arc in exchange for an honest review 🙂

I liked this a lot!  The plot may be too cliche, and it definitely sounds like it was based loosely on, ahem, Taylor Swift's own love life, but I felt the love connection 🥰  The leads have great chemistry, and are likable enough that I was rooting for them.  It also gave me a glimpse of how fake everything is in show business, and how managers and publicists play huge roles in shaping a celebrity's persona.  I breezed through this book and I recommend it to those looking for a light romance 🥰

✨ARC Review: The Player and the Pop Star by Cait Elise✨

Fake dating? I’m in.
A pop princess with powerhouse vocals and an NFL heartthrob with a soft spot for rescue animals…Let me just melt right into the pages. 🐾🎤🏈

This book gave me major Tay Tay & Big Scott vibes — glitz, fame, a complicated incident, and a pop star determined to take back her narrative. But it was Decker — the animal-loving, soft-on-the-inside, touchdown-throwing, golden retriever of a man — who scored my heart. Lena - Thick thighs, big dreams, even bigger heart. Our girl is the moment. Thick thighs do save lives — and she absolutely wanted this ARC to last longer.

This was my first dive into the fake dating trope, and honestly, I didn’t just dip a toe in — I cannonballed into this story. It’s sweet, flirty, funny, a little over-the-top in the best possible way (hello, backstage kisses and media drama!), and I was here for every cliché moment. Give me the angst. Give me the slow burn. Give me the forehead touches. I’ll eat it up every time.

You will 1000% root for Lena and Decker. From their staged appearances to the very real feelings simmering underneath — it’s touchdown after touchdown for these two. And don’t even get me started on Lena’s bestie, Joss, and the broody Cole… I know book two is coming and I am already manifesting that ARC into my life.

📚If you’re after a light, feel-good, starry-eyed romance with sparkle, sass, and an NFL player who dreams of creating an animal shelter. This one’s for you.

🎤💖🏈

Huge thank you to Cait for the ARC — I absolutely loved this story and I’m so ready for more

I want to preface this review by putting it out there that I don't usually read romance novels, as I am more of a Psych-Thriller kind of girl.

But OH MY GOD, I am just so glad I got accepted to be one of the ARC Readers because this novel has made me giggle like a school girl in love and cry with how Decker and Lena has navigated this whole fake relationship that they have.

Here's what I liked about the book:

1. The pacing is just right to make you feel invested with Lena and Decker's "relationship".

2. The characters aren't one dimensional!!! I just love how Lena isn't just a Pop Star who wants the fame, and Decker isn't just a playboy jock. They're fully fleshed out characters. I also like that they make wrong decisions and the author gave them the time and space to sit with it and think through it, ultimately bringing them back to each other's arms.

3. THANK GOD FOR THE HAPPY ENDING I WOULD'VE BEEN BAWLING MY EYES OUT IF THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

4. I love how beneath all the romance and giddiness the book gives you, it's also a call out to how artists, big celebrities, and other public personalities are really just regular people with jobs (maybe they earn a whole lot more than us regular regular people) and they should be given the privacy and the autonomy to decide for themselves.

I would've wanted Lena's parents to have more exposition but it was fine, the story doesn't revolve around them anyway.

Overall, I loved the book. I literally finished reading it within a day, such a page turner.

Lena is a successful international pop star who is down on her luck with relationships. When she makes a bad decision after the latest break up, she's in need of some good press.
Decker is a Vista City Kings football player who also doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to women. So when their collective management teams come together to make a plan for Decker and Lena to fake date, what could go wrong?

I enjoyed reading this book. Decker is such a sweet family man who loves his friends and his dog, Princess. You can see he wants to have someone special in his life but hasn't met that person yet. He makes time for the things and people who are important to him. Lena annoyed me a bit towards the end there. Without giving too much away, she came across as a bit heartless and cold, which I know she's had to put walls up to protect herself. Both characters are very different, and they both bring out strong feelings but in slightly different ways. I'm curious to see if there will be a book about Joss and Cole in the future. Thank you Cait Elise for the opportunity to read this ARC!

Fake dating trope? Ohhh yesss, I was definitely SAT for this book. This lighthearted sports romance book had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. This book has it all from the infamous house party to the occasional longing between Lena and Decker. My favorite part of the book was the duality of growth between the two characters. We start off in enemy territory when Lena and Decker are introduced but as we progress in the story, we find that the two share a lot of similarities. I really loved and valued how we got to see the POV from both sides. It allowed me to step into either persons shoes to see what they were thinking and what they thought of what happened. The pacing of this book was perfect ( it literally got me out of my reading slump so thanksssss). If you are looking for a good book to laugh and gasp throughout the entire book, let it be this one.

I’m so honored that I was able to be apart of Cait’s ARC! It was my first time doing this and I’m so glad that I was able to read this amazing book!!

[arc review]

Imagine Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce but in an old Disney teen movie 🩷 As a slow-burn girly, this book is a bit too fast-paced for me, but I enjoyed reading this nonetheless.

Lena (the pop star) and Decker (the player) have become entangled in a fake dating kinda relationship to save both of their careers (one is to save from bad publicity, and one is to gain more opportunity) — but their fake romance started to get unpretentious when Decker fell in love for real and was ready to go all out, but Lena’s still chasing her dream and was unsure about everything yet (yup, it’s so Midnight Rain coded and I love it 🥹).

I love their cute little banters and how they protect each other, I just wished the build-up was in a slower pace so the characters would have time to really get to know each other well, and the chasing to be a bit longer. I was also expecting a conflict between Decker and Callum to see who will Lena choose just to make it more intense hehe. But I like the ending. And how Lena stood up for herself and choosing to decide for her.

I loved this book and I always will love this author! Such a cute, contemporary (and clean!) love story with an ending that melted my heart! This book uses some of the best tropes with stellar characters and scenes I still think about even though I read it early!

If you’re craving something sweet with fantastic snarky banter, sports/pop star celebrity vibes, animal lover cinnamon roll MMC and can’t-admit-she’s-in-love FMC, you HAVE to read this book. The romance is clean but still has some juicy physical moments, which I personally LOVED. I was easily immersed in Lena and Decker’s world and invested in their (sometimes questionable) choices. Not hard to love this debut novel, especially if you enjoy other novels like this one!

It’s especially good if you follow a certain *ahem* pop star/football player pairing in real life ;)

This is a 3.5 ⭐️ for me! Not sure if Goodreads actually lets you do a half a star lol.

This was a really cute easy read! Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes so this definitely was a fun time. It was well written for a debut novel. I didn’t really connect with the main character that well for some reason I did find Lena to not be my cup of tea. Though I did feel for her for parts of the book I could only imagine what it’s like to feel so powerless over your own life, constantly having decisions made for you.

This is a really good closed door romance for anyone who isn’t comfortable with the spice that typical romances have. It was really cute to see Decker and Lena’s relationship evolve and Lena for once to be treated the way she deserved.

Grateful for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book ❤️

Pop star meets pro athlete in a fake dating setup that had me grinning the whole time. This one hit every beat I wanted.

Lena is confident, funny, and refuses to be anyone’s puppet. Decker is the golden boy with a soft heart and just enough edge to make you fall fast. Their chemistry was instant but the connection built slowly, and that tension carried the whole story.

I loved getting both of their perspectives. It made the emotional moments land harder and gave so much depth to the little things. The pacing never dragged and it kept me locked in from the first chapter.

No spice here, but it still brought all the emotion. The slow burn worked, and the payoff felt real. If you’re into clean romance that still gives you all the feelings, this one’s it.

Lena and Decker's story is a fun adventure of fake-dating, a young pop star and a pro-football heartthrob. These enemies turned star-crossed lovers have a rocky start, but then begin to lean on each other for comfort...until he starts falling FIRST! (Which, we love, right?!) Lena's career is at stake and her "momager" can't help but spin a web to try and fix it, and in comes Decker. I loved the banter, the sincerity of feelings and as a Swiftie, the hints to our beloved Taylor & Travis outings! Also, can we see a sequel with Cole and Joss?! Thank you to Cait Elise for releasing this to ARCs, I'm eager to read more!

There is so much depth to this story it's hard to decide which to touch on first.
First, I loved the characters (likable and unlikable). They all had wonderful banter and was very easy to recreate the moment.
Second, I love how much depth into difficult topics this had. From popstar life, to football career, to paparazzi, to inner demons...so much emotional tugging.
Third and my favorite, I love how this is a closed door romance. This definitely would have been ruined if there had been some inserted anywhere. It was cute, emotional and definitely a slow burn.
There is nothing negative or even any negative criticism I can say about this....I simply just love it.

I read this at work. You can say my colleagues were wondering why I was giggling and all because of Lena and Decker. They’re lovable and cute. This is really a fresh read!

Thank you so much, too for giving me this ARC. Though it took me a long time to review due to tight schedule at work, I hope this helps the author. Planning to spread this through my social media accounts to make up for it.

As much as I love having to read about Lena and Decker, I am enthusiastic and looking forward as well to read more of her published works! 💜

(no spoilers review) I absolutely loved this book. I ate it up. The fun banter between the main characters was delicious. this book was such an easy, light-hearted read, which I truly appreciate. I devoured every chapter with a smile on my face and at one point was screaming at Lena to get it together because I was invested in the outcome of their relationship! I can't wait to read more of Cait's books in the future.

This book was just perfect! Their relationship started as a contract.. ended as.. 😍
I enjoyed their differences merging into something deeper. They focused on each other's faults only to realize that it was what they needed at the time. This book made me teary eyed and laugh all at the same time. They needed to work through their hesitations and it made their relationship a lot more real.

Clean romance

It was an easy and cute read. It picked up for me from about 40% into the book. I enjoyed Decker and Lena and their very sassy/sunshine chemistry. I was definitely rooting for Lena to take control of her life and I’m glad she got there in the end. Overall, an enjoyable read.
