I’d rather punch myself in the face than work with that thunderous oaf.
When the messengers of the resistance vanish and ritualistic killings appear on their doorstep, all eyes turn to the unknown presence lurking in the woods. Convinced it’s the remnants of a murderous cult—one that exists because she failed to stamp it out—Penny vows to end them. But as much as she wishes she could be a one-woman army, she needs backup.
Voted “most likely to stab someone in the face,” making friends was never her strong suit, and in the midst of a war, her options for allies are limited. So to get the manpower for a search party, she agrees to a partnership with the giant, hulking, infuriating Mal—the general of the resistance. Her general and “commanding officer” (barf).
But she doesn’t intend to play nice.
With each step into the deep, dark woods, a tangled mystery unfolds, launching Penny and her team into a cat-and-mouse chase to uncover the truth about the insidious company, Pharmatrox. But as the threats ramp up, so does the tension between Penny and Mal, putting them on a collision course where they’ll either crash and burn or discover they’ve met their match.
To end the war and stop Pharmatrox before it regains power, the nation's future hinges on Penny’s choice—will she remain loyal to the resistance and to Mal? Or will she give up everything in her ruthless quest to take down the company that destroyed her life?
The Lies That Hide Within is perfect for fans who wonder what it would be like if Black Widow and Captain America ended up together…Book 2 of The Darkness Duology blends Resident Evil with the humor & found family of Zombieland, action/adventure like The Golden Circle, unlikely allies & heists like Baby Driver, and mind-bending twists like Shutter Island.
This is not a closed-door romance (there are steamy scenes and romantic tension throughout), but it is not a spicy / smut book. This is steamier than The Darkness All Around Us (Book 1) with more of a focus on the romance, but shares the plot 50/50. For mature readers ages 18+. TWs include addiction, violence, blood and gore, death, and adult language.
✨ Fast Paced Post Apocalyptic Thriller ✨ Found Family ✨ GrumpyxGrumpy Romantic Subplot
This duology has my whole heart. The Lies That Hide Within is the perfect companion to The Darkness All Around Us. Both books are a solid five stars for me.
This book follows Penny primarily as she comes to terms with what she’s done in the past and how the consequences of her actions affect her and those around her directly. The growth seen in Penny is phenomenal as she begins to accept that people care about her and she is still deserving of love.
I absolutely love how everything builds off the first book as more of the intricacies of Pharmatrox and their plans are revealed. Everything has a connection that eventually gets unveiled and it’s all so well thought out and clever!
You don’t want to miss this stunning conclusion to this duology. If you like post-apocalytic thrillers with a “Big Brother” vibe, give these a read.
Strap in once again, survivor. Megan Boley is back with the blistering conclusion to The Darkness Duology, and The Lies That Hide Within is a deliciously dark cocktail of post-apocalyptic mayhem, shadowy conspiracies, steamy tension, and knife-edged banter.
It's fair to say things aren't going will at the end of the world - resistance’s messengers have gone missing. Ritualistic killings are creeping closer. And somewhere in the woods, something is watching. Penny’s got a theory though and it’s not a good one. She's convinced the murderous cult she failed to erase is still out there, licking its wounds and ready to burn the world (again).
Naturally, she’s hell-bent on finishing what she started. But one woman versus an insidious death cult with biotech backing? Even Penny... voted "most likely to stab someone in the face"... knows she can’t do it alone.
Dang, I thought the first one was amazing, but this managed to blow it out of the water!
This is a book for everyone who loves zombies and the post-apocalyptic genre. I’m beyond impressed with this duology.
This sequel takes everything that made the first book compelling and elevates it. With high-stakes action, richly developed characters, and a dark, immersive world, it’s a must-read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction.
Seriously. A. Must. Read.
One of the greatest strengths is its character work, particularly Penny’s deeply nuanced arc. She’s a protagonist defined by her flaws (always something I love)—haunted by past mistakes, burdened by self-doubt, and yet relentless in her fight for what she believes is right for her people. Her journey is filled with emotional complexity, making her growth all the more satisfying. Mal serves as the perfect counterbalance, offering steadiness without diminishing her strength, and their dynamic is brimming with tension and depth. The yearning, the denial, the constant interruptions as they almost take it to the next step. Penny and Mal are such a compelling pair, both stubborn and damaged in their own ways, yet they complement each other so well. The romance is just SO well-executed, balancing yearning and conflict in a way that makes every interaction between them incredible.
This also continues to expand on its worldbuilding, further developing the corporate, pharmaceutical-driven antagonist. The action is intense and well-paced, keeping the stakes high while allowing for moments of emotional weight. Agnes and Derek’s development as a couple also adds so much to the story, reinforcing the found-family theme that remains a core strength of the series.
This duology is an impressive feat, delivering a gripping blend of action, adventure, and character-driven storytelling. With its expertly crafted tension, complex relationships, and a vividly realized world, it’s a standout in the genre. I freaking loved it.
Thanks so much to the author and R&R Book Tours for the complimentary copy and the opportunity to read and and review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this book. It drags you in with suspense and intrigue. I had to know what happened. Definitely one of my top favorite dystopia series.
I did not want to put this down after I started. It took all the actions and characters I loved and went crazy. I absolutely loved how it ended and how we got there.
Full disclosure, I haven't quite finished this book due to the amount of pain I have been in lately. But I think another part of me is trying to sabotage because when I get to the end...it will be the end and I AM NOT READY FOR IT!! I WANT MORE!
This series has been a part of my life for well over a month, I am living and breathing Penny and Agnes, they are on my mind all the time! I can't not mention Quentin!! I mean that loveable rogue definitely brightens up the world they live in. I seriously want more, can we have more?! I can't let these characters go. They are strong characters, male and female. Stella and Penny are two kick ass characters, but you see their vulnerable side and that's saying a lot after how we saw Penny behave in Book 1!!!!!!! Her character growth alone can carry this book. She is fascinating to read about. And dare I even mention this character, but finally FINALLY we meet Kev!!
Again another tome, but seriously DO NOT let that put you off. This book deserves to be read, it deserves to be on the big screen, a weekly episode that never ends.
The fight is intense in this book, especially when someone from Mal's past turns up. We have a brand new group of people, and the turned, sheesh, the blinking turned are more advanced...a bit like the Walking Dead and how that ended with the zombies being more...human *gulp*
There is not a bad thing I can say about this book, well apart from I want more!! But that's a me problem. It slots so well into a genre I don't read much of, but I just couldn't say no, especially after I saw the cover and thought female Negan! LOL. I love how we have explored the world of a future that could happen, never taking vitamins again, and how this band of people just want normalcy again and will go to every possible means necessary to protect their loved ones.
I will update my review once I have finished the book, but I know I love this!! Give me hard copies!
I'm back with the second book in The Darkness duology - and you'll hopefully remember my review of book one a couple of weeks ago - The Darkness All Around Us.
I absolutely loved the first book (despite my initial fear of it's size!) and couldn't wait to continue the story here - again, another chunky read at almost 500 pages!
Well, I can confirm that this one had me hooked right from the start.
I found it much easier to become immersed in this one, possibly because I went straight into this from the first - or possibly because the world building had all been done for us and so here, we dive straight into an action packed finale.
There's a whole lot of tension in this book and along with the fight that the resistance is gearing up for, we also see the build up to some spicy entanglements between Penny and The General.
These were brilliantly woven into the exciting storyline so as to add another layer, rather than detracting from the main.
I was honestly on the edge of my seat throughout and found that I raced through chunks of this in each sitting - I surprised myself with how quickly I got through this.
The writing was so good and I loved (or hated) just how realistic and believable this unique storyline felt. This really does get you thinking about how this relates to the real life stories we see about the big pharma companies and their methods.
Although that's definitely not a debate for here.
I loved this duology so much - having been a little apprehensive at first, I love that this managed to totally change my mind.
I can't wait to read more from this author in the near future!!
Megan does it again after The Darkness All Around Us I didn't think I could love it as good as the first one. The first one is still amazing but it only gets better now that we are thrown into the world of zombie apocalypse and with some steamy romance. Characters Penny, Mal, Quentin, Tara, Silas, Lawrence, Derek, Agnes(If you read it you know who she is), perfect little crew of characters that I have liked through the story. The violence and blood gore is not too much at least for me because I can handle that kind of storyline. I still like the fact that the romance is not the main support in this but still part of the story. I loved the first one but this one continues the story world that Megan has created to something more. Penny is the main character mentioned and seeing her growth and story evolve was amazing. I literally can not pick one part in the story that is my favorite because the whole story is just well written and I enjoyed this. (More then I should have.. when the action was happening I was like I wish I could turn this book into a movie and just sit there and root for these characters even more. I could picture throughout the book on what was happening as if it was happening in front of me. If I could jump into one world it would be this world. The way Penny and her team uncover the truth about the insidious company, Pharmatrox it feels so much like Resident Evil (Umbrella Corporation) I for one love that world and this story that Megan has made in book form is what I can say is as good as Resident Evil. I cant wait to see more from Megan if there is more like this world or anything else she may go into. I can recommend this book and The Darkness All Around Us so much. "I can't take any more of this fan club shit." Derek flapped a hand at himself. "I made it back in one piece too, in case you were worried. Where's my bone-crushing embrace." "You may have killed the network and the life force of Pharmatrox's internal functions, but they found a way to continue broadcasting their bullshit to the rest of the world- one of their outside allies, I imagine, aided them in getting this doctored footage out."

In this second and final book, we see the fight continue both literally and metaphorically with Penny as the main POV and Agnes popping up now and then.
I really, really liked the change of main POV, especially given the events of Book 1 and the finale.
I don't think there's a more perfect character to be the main focal point than Penny!
Penny is everything you would expect from a dystopian rebellion leader - determined, stubborn, and loyal to the cause - but having gained new friends of sorts and reconnected with family, she's also loyal to them.
This book did make me smile at times with the will 'they/won't they' between Penny and Mal as the sexual tension was just oozing from the pages at times!
Although it is 499 pages, there is plenty going on in this book, and you can feel the steady pace of the characters slowly but surely fighting their way to freedom from the highly addictive 'dust'.
Megan had a way with her writing that almost consumed you. You can start reading and then look at the % read and be at 60% without even realising it.
Her writing is entertaining but utterly, perfectly effortless in its approach to telling the story. It flows beautifully, woth strong female leads but you can tell that the story had also consumed the writer at one point because all the scenes and characters blend together seamlessly - there's nothing forced as what can happen with some science fiction books.
Megan, this Duology has been absolutely fantastic, and you have gained another fan!
I can't wait to see where your writing takes up next!
I want to start by saying that I need more! This duology was everything I love and more I didn’t know I needed. Another tome but believe me when I say you will likely speed through this because you become so immersed you cannot put it down if you wanted to. I did love Penny in book one but didn’t think anyone could take Stella’s place, well I was wrong.
Now I love a good dystopian and growing up a little obsessed with Resident Evil I knew I’d love this duology just not how much I would. One of the main reasons I love dystopian and post-apocalyptic media is because it allows for great character work and exploration and let me say that Boley excels at this. But what really keeps you hooked is not only the excellent characters but the plot, action and world. There’s so much this book gives and it does it just right. I love a bit of romance subplot and Boley, once again, knows how to balance this. I also found a new trope of grumpy x grumpy (I thought I only liked grumpy x sunshine).
This series has it all, found family, a little humour (needed in my opinion in a heavy post apocalyptic world), brilliant characters including two kickass women and a lot of action. You are sure to get engaged in this duology and I most certainly will be getting hard copies asap.
As always thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.
*I received an e-ARC versions of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
The Lies That Hide Within in the conclusion to The Darkness Duology. It picks up a few months after the ending of book 1, The Darkness All Around Us, and focuses on Penny and her journey of self healing, along with rebuilding the world after all of the chaos.
This story has the syfy element link book one, political machinations, and revolutionary ideas, but it also focuses more on the romance between Penny and Mal, the general who gets under Penny’s skin. What I loved is that even though Penny has to go through her own self-understanding/forgiving journey, Mal is there the whole time. Challenging her when she needs it but also just being a comfort as well. I really loved the dynamic and tension that was built between them, as it feels like these two characters actually understand each other. I also felt that the overall plot and romance were well integrated and kept me interested the whole time.
The whole rag tag team is present still and the character relationships between all of them are well balanced. We get some of Agnes’ POV which is fun to revisit, and of course Quentin is a huge part of the story. Penny and Mal gave me all the delicious tension, but Penny and Quentin’s slow steps towards re-bonding as brother and sister made my heart swell. As much as Mal was a part of Penny’s development, I would argue Quentin was the most influential.
Overall a great conclusion to this duology. If you like syfy elements, delicious tension between the two love interests (no spice but implied), and the found family trope, this book is definitely one to check out.
Penny + Mal = insane tension. This grumpy, stubborn pair are hilarious with their scathing banter and sweet when they finally admit their feelings for each other. I'm officially over the grumpy x sunshine trope, give me all the grumpy x grumpy couples!
While flirting around their feelings, these two are responsible for a large community of people trying to survive and fight back against enemies on several fronts. There are hidden enemies and unexpected allies as the Outpost gang (Agnes, Derek, Tara, Lawrence, and Quentin) try to save a monster-filled world.
This is book 2 of the Darkness biology and I recommend reading book one, The Darkness All Around Us, before reading this one. It follows Penny on her journey on coming to terms with her past mistakes and her fight for what is right for her people.
I really enjoyed this one. Penny and Mal are good for each other and their chemistry is off the charts. The world building is excellent. I also loved Agnes and Derek. This read is filled with adventure, tension, and some romance. If you like dystopian reads, you will want to check this duology out. Highly recommend.
This book was so much better than the first! If you love action-packed stories with explosions, intense battles, and a fight against a corrupt group to restore some normalcy to the world, you’ll love this series. The story is filled with thrilling action and just a sprinkle of romance, keeping you on the edge of your seat as the tension builds. One thing I really love about this book is that it delivers suspense without relying on excessive gore.
This series was honestly one of the best series I’ve ever read! Book 2 picks up with the antagonist from book 1 and man does it start with a bang! It’s filled with so much action and tension, and just like book 1, the twists and turns never stop. We are introduced to more interesting characters and some seriously creepy villains. I highly recommend this to everyone. Even If dystopian isn’t your usual go-to…get over it and read this Immediately.
The Lies That Hide Within by Megan Boley. The Darkness duology Book 2. This book follows the darkness all around us. I really enjoyed this book. I did like Penny. I absolutely love zombie post apocalypse books. This one blew me away. I couldn't put it down. This is a new author for me. I will definitely be watching her. I definitely recommend both books.
Penny is not a social person, she’s more of a kill the turned and be left alone kind. But then she’s pushed into a leadership role with Mal, a man who’s super infuriating and definitely does not have any emotional or sexual tension with. But mal has experience she can’t deny and they must work together to run the faction and win the fight against the turned and those who create the drug that leads to the turned. Ex leader Rodney is dead but his close circle is now a dangerous cult in the woods. Mals past before the fall gets dragged to the surface and once again meets his match. A new group found in the woods may be allies, but could easily be a new enemy, the turned are becoming harder to kill and the plans against them are becoming more complex and straining their defences. With a new found bond to her previously lost younger brother and enemy turned ally Agnes, Penny is pushed to her limits, emotionally and physically. The fight is hard but holding on to those you love is even harder, and Penny never backs down from a fight.
Just, wow! I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC copy, but all opinions are my own :) **potential spoilers ahead?**
The second instalment in this series is phenomenal! Penny’s redemption arc was a standout—her growth felt raw, real, and deeply satisfying. Her dynamic with Mal was a joy to explore, full of banter and chemistry, while her evolving relationship with Quentin and the others added heartwarming depth.
I also loved how we still got glimpses of Agnes’ perspective and her relationship with Derek. This sequel not only met but exceeded expectations, balancing pacing, character development, and emotional beats perfectly.
If you loved the first book, this one will blow you away. If you’re new to the series, dive in now!
Thank you Megan! It was a joy to read this novel!

𝚁𝚎𝚟𝚒𝚎𝚠: Boley is a master at exposition! I so easily became immersed into this post-apocalyptic world once more- just a skeleton of what life once was. This second book focuses on Penny. Her back story and hero’s journey is filled with tragedy, struggle and incredible strength. The character connections were so deep and raw - and the banter between them all, honestly it was the connections between this unlikely family that made the whole story so good! It was the romantic tension that kept me turning page after page. This book has everything you’d want, post-apocalyptic life, zombies, oppression, military tyrants, cult killings, motorcycle badasses, science and so, so much hope…hopefulness in saving humanity, friendship and love. I was honored to be a beta reader for Boley and was super excited to be an ARC reader for the final book! Happy Publication Day!! Another wonderful journey and fight for humanity!
The Lies That Hide Within is the explosive conclusion to Megan Boley’s Darkness Duology—and she absolutely nailed it. If you’re a fan of female villain redemption arcs, Black Widow + Captain America vibes, high-stakes heists, cult takedowns, steamy forced proximity, relentless action, and a tight-knit found family, then you will love this book!!
Megan is now 2 for 2 and I devoured this book. She masterfully crafted a fast-paced, suspenseful plot filled with heart-pounding battles, deep corruption, romance, and the ultimate showdown with Pharmatrox. The stakes are high, and the payoff is so worth it.
We’re reunited with Penny, Agnes, Mal, Silas, Quentin, Tara, Lawrence, and Derek—and their complex, evolving relationships are at the core of this character-driven story. Every dynamic felt real, raw, and powerful. This was a true page-turner and an unforgettable ending to a gripping duology. I’m honestly devastated that it’s over—I need more from this world!
